PROLOGUE

-Ronaldo-

It had dawned fresh and moist with a bleak mist that clouded the understory. A rose-pink glare painted the sky as Ron rested on a branch overlooking the open river that cut through the tribe's resting site.

Ron always enjoyed the quiet mornings. It reminded him of the times he would spend with his daughter, Silvia. Once a little fledgling who would playfully tug on his tail to a young adult who would talk to him about her aspirations of motherhood. He peeked over his wing to find… nothing. He remembered; she is not around anymore.

She had renounced the tribe in a fit of outrage and despair. She and her beloved, Ben, were dancing in the sky, blissfully unaware, when a mighty eagle dove down at the pair. Poor sweet Ben was the one who the predator had chosen as its meal for the day. His neck constricted around the eagle's large talons. At the sight of danger, the surrounding macaws scattered to the wind while Silvia, ignited with rancour, chased after the eagle until it eventually escaped her.

Distraught and enraged at the loss of her mate, Silvia ridiculed the tribe, "a flock sticks together!" She spared no room for excuses from the cowards who submitted her mate to be devoured. Even Ron's attempts to comfort her in her mourn had no such effect against her anguish. Unable to live with those too coward to protect one of their own, she took her chances out in the wilderness alone. She warned anyone who chose to follow her that they would meet the same fate as her mate.

A rustling in the leaves stole Ron from his rest. "Who?" he croaked.

A blue bird bursted down through the canopy, leaves and twigs fell from the trees. It was another blue macaw, Eduardo, who then dropped himself uncomfortably close beside Ron. Eduardo was young, robust and burley with a small patch of feathers that graced the top of his head.

Ron, however, didn't expect him to be here. "What do you want?"

Eduardo's voice was harsh and stern, "I heard where Silvia is nesting at."

"What about it?" Ron grew annoyed. This was not something he wished to talk about.

"We've left Silvia alone long enough. It's time for her to come back to the tribe."

"You think I didn't already have this talk with her? She wants to be left alone." Ron reminded the brutish bird. "You can't force her back."

"It's dangerous," Eduardo spoke harshly. "Ben wouldn't want her out there alone. If there's anyone in the tribe who can bring her back, it's you."

Perhaps he's right. If anyone could convince Silvia back to the tribe, who else better than her father? While Ron respected his daughters wishes to be left alone, trepidation haunted his mind since they last spoke. A bird all alone in the wilderness. Surely, no easier prey to be found. "Alright," he submitted. "We'll check on her."

"Of course."

"If we're going to go," Ron let out an exhaustive grunt as he stretched his wings. "We should do it while it's still early."

"After you," Eduardo gestured his wing for Ron to take the lead.

The pair took wing. A soft wind brushed past their feathers as they traversed down the winding river. The blood in Ron's chest pounded and his skin tingled. For the entire flight, anticipation had engulfed him. Did she miss him too?

It wasn't until midday when they grew closer to where she was thought to have nested. Navigating past some thick foliage, the two of them discovered a small clearing by the riverbank. "Humans," Ron stated. A camp surrounded by stumps and duff left over from their labor. Most snug inside a few makeshift tents with their screams of exuberance filtered out by the sound of buzzing metal. At the edge of the clearing, beside a few fallen trees, a human was gnashing the buzzing tool against a tree. Chewing it down to the stump. The faint sickly-sweet smell of gasoline whisked in the air.

The pair perched on a branch just outside the camp. "This is where Silvia is supposed to be," Ron spoke apprehensively. Could she have moved on somewhere else? He thought. If she was, then perhaps there would be a trace of her somewhere around the human riddled camp, but he noticed nothing more than meets the eye. "See anything Eduardo?"

Eduardo scanned the area. He noticed the scattered remains of a bird's nest laid out beside one of the collapsed trees. "There," he pointed, "a nest."

Ron jerked forward with intrigue. There was one problem: they were no match for the human who stood nearby. "I have an idea," Ron nudged Eduardo. "You lure him away from the nest, and I'll see if there's anything I can find."

"And how am I supposed to do that?" Eduardo didn't like the plan.

Ron replied, "I don't know. Start dancing." Eduardo stared at him with displeasure. His sense of humor seemed as stiff as his face. Ron slapped Eduardo on the back, "just do it. We need to know if that's her nest."

The Eduardo grumbled before he carried out the plan the best way he knew how. He didn't have the heart to deny the older bird. Eduardo plunged and ferociously attacked the man. Blood streaming down the man's head with plucks of hair dropping down to his feet. The man dropped the tool and miserably swiped at Eduardo with one arm while trying to shield his head with the other. It wasn't until the man began fleeing towards the tents, with Eduardo close behind, did Ron make his move towards the nest.

With the way clear, Ron glided down to the broken nest to see what he could discover. He noticed a blue wing sticking out from a fallen tree. His chest thumped and pounded with a deep chill radiating from beak to talon. This panic obscured his thoughts as he tumbled over to the lifeless wing. There was no mistaking it – this is what remained of Silvia. Tears flooded his eyes and fell to the earth. Only a failure of a father would allow his daughter to die alone. "I'm sorry."

He convinced himself, it's the humans fault. Those vile creatures that ripped through the earth day by day had now taken the last family he had left. He should've have stopped her from leaving the tribe, by force if necessary. At least then, she'd be alive.

It was the sorrows of another that broke him from his trance. Tucked away in a narrow hole beneath the tree stump laid a quivering little bird. Ron gently laid his daughter's wing back to the ground and sloppily wiped the tears from his face. He hunched over to get a close look of this bird. It was a fledgling blue macaw covered in filth and muck. His eyes, still wet, sparkled at the sight… a grandchild? The fledgling slinked away deeper into the bowels of the stump. Now too far for him to reach.

"Ww-hh-hhoo? The fledgling trembled. Almost sounded like an owl.

Ron spoke softly as to not frighten the little bird. "It's okay. I'm Ronaldo. Your grandfather." It twitched its head. It hadn't yet learned what those words meant. "Come here," Ron opened himself up for a hug. He hoped this would be enough. The bird crept towards him cautiously. A single twitch could force it to slink back in as far as the hole dug. When it stepped out into the light, he could see past the grime to see his daughter's face once more. A granddaughter. Once the girl was close enough, Ron closed his wings around her. She jerked when she was wrapped in his wings, but soon cuddled against his chest as his embrace matched the warmth of her mother. Ron lifted his wings over her eyes to shield her from Silvia's corpse.

"It's time to leave!" Eduardo came shouting overhead.

Ron peeked over the stump to see a crowd of humans charging towards them. He leaned over and spread his wings, "get on my back," he ordered the girl. Although a bit dubious, she seemed to understand what he had in mind. She crawled on his back, sinking her tiny talons deep to maintain her balance. Ron groaned, "AUUGHH," as the girl dug into his back. Once she laid her head down behind his neck, he took off to escape with Eduardo out of the clearing. Rocks hurled past them and bounced off the trees as they pushed through the foliage. They retraced their flight back up the river to head home back to the tribe.

"What happened?" Eduardo sounded strained. "Who do you have there?"

Ron was hesitant to say. The flurry of emotions that pervaded him had only just begun to settle. "S-silvia's gone… this is… uh, her daughter." He hadn't yet learned the girl's name.

"I'm… I'm sorry," Eduardo stared at the girl in disbelief. Perhaps this wasn't all for nothing. "What's her name?"

Ron peeked over his wing to see his granddaughter. Her eyes squinted as the wind puffed her in the face. It seemed this was her first time flying. "What's your name?"

She spoke, clearly for once, "Azzzuura."
