Note: Naruto What If Story A Heroes Journey AU with Naruto, Hinata and Sasuke on Team 7 as a twist. Sakura will be on Team 8 while Sai will be on Team 7 after Sasuke leaves the village. The New Era teammates seeing the memories will be Boruto, Sarada, Sumire and Tsubaki). Also Naruto is an anbu in this alternate universe where he never became the Hokage. Naruto is also adopted in this alternate universe as well.
This story was inspired by mugiwara-no-lucy's A Heroes Journey and another fanfic story call Scroll of Jiken.
Chapter 1
Boruto Uzumaki laid atop of his bed as he stared at the ceiling of his room. Boruto having an even greater understanding of his father due to hearing some stories of the past was happy. Through it he learned even more of his father's flaws and insecurities stemming from his craving for acknowledgement and even him dealing with the villagers' harsh treatment of him due to Naruto being the container of the Nine Tailed Fox.
Boruto then looked down at his headband, a testament of the day where his relationship with his father had changed forever. A year had passed since then and Boruto's curiosity of his father's past and how he came to become the man he is today, hadn't wavered in the slightest. In fact, it had gotten stronger.
"Even though we never had a strain relationship, why is dad so strong? I wonder…..how such a kind hearted person grew to being a well-respected Anbu leader?" Boruto questioned himself as he scanned over the pictures of Naruto in his youth and compared them to the pictures of him as an adult with Hinata, Kawaki, Boruto and his younger sister, Himawari.
Shaking his head, Boruto put on his standard black jacket with burgundy stripes before walking out of his house.
"Man I wish…there was a way I could see dad's past…." Boruto muttered as he walked through the village. While he could hear about Naruto's past he was a fan of "show don't tell" and after he lost his close match with Shikadai, by talking to his dad privately for voicing how proud he was for Boruto not going to extreme lengths to win, he was inspired to learn more about his dad.
I wonder if there is some kind scroll that I could use…" Boruto said as he sat down on a park bench. A thought finally crossed his mind. "I can find a scroll that can show me dad's past!" he said with excitement.
'I can start by going home and looking for it in the attic or in the guest room. Especially since Kawaki is out with mom and Hima right now. Also dad is on a mission right now so hopefully he will be home tonight'.
Upon returning home Boruto started looking in Naruto's study room, and couldn't find a scroll in sight. 'Man I thought there was a scroll in here. I guess I will have to check the guess room as it isn't Kawaki's new bedroom yet'. And with that Boruto cleaned up the mess and closed the study room door.
He then went into Kawaki's room and as fate would have it, he couldn't find it. Most of the scrolls were old Justus that his dad had learned in the past, not mentioned scrolls that Sasuke had gave Kawaki as well. 'And I thought Kawaki was more interested in learning Justus from Sasuke. Since both act so similar. Man where could that scroll be I am really starting to get angry', he thought in a furious way.
Boruto then cleaned up the mess and left Kawaki's bedroom. He only had one choice left to find it. Sighing to himself he said, "I guess I am going in the attic".
Boruto pumped his fist in his palm as he made his way to the attic where all the various different scrolls in his family was found. Within five hours he had searched everything that had his clan symbol on it and couldn't find anything. Therefore he decided to find it in the Hyuga section and couldn't find it.
Upon seeing something shiny he was intrigued. "What's this" as he went to grab it out of random box of stuff that belonged to his dad. "The Lost Scroll…of Regained Memories". Boruto was confused by the title of the scroll but decided to read it to see if this is what he was looking for. "Ninja Art…Mind Trick…Genjutsu Surveillance Jutsu" he said while reading the title of the Jutsu that was inside the scroll.
He then reads the description of the Jutsu by saying, "Once this Jutsu is cast, one can use this jutsu to view into any past memories of whoever the target they choose. The target has to be a living person and cannot be a dead person. Also if more people is around, they must see the same memories as the one casting the jutsu. Also this is only if a group of people desire to view the same memories". Boruto then jumped up in the air in happiest saying, "I finally found it!".
He decided to clean up the huge mess in the attic before he continued reading the scroll. After seeing that the attic is clean, Boruto leaves the attic and went to his room to continue reading the scroll.
While on his bed he sees something else on the scroll and says, "Warning: the person that is targeted will relive these memories in an actual dreamworld. The target person will not wake up until seeing all the memories from beginning to end. The target person will be unable to respond to the group of people that are seeing the memories. The target person will act like a zombie by being seen in all the stages of his life. Starting from him being shrunken into a toddler, then into a pre teen, then into a teenager and lastly a young adult. The target person will have his adult life intact but outside of the Jutsu he will be seen as a little toddler".
Boruto the dropped the scroll in horror. He is now trembling in fear. "If I use this on dad. Then he might not remember me or our family. He will relive all the bad stuff that he went through as a kid. Not to mention he will be a little kid once I cast the Jutsu".
Before he can continue he heard a knock on the door it was Hinata. "Mom what are you doing here? I thought you were out with Aunt Hanabi?", Boruto say while trying to hide the scroll he found.
Smiling Hinata said, "I came early to see if Kawaki and Hima are here. But I guess they are not here yet. By the way what are you hiding behind your back Boruto?".
Boruto then handed the scroll to his mother. As his mother reads the scroll she started to look a little worry, as she said "Your not planning to use this on Naruto are you?".
Boruto nodded his head while waiting for the scolding of a lifetime. But to his shock he didn't hear anything from his mother. "I don't think this is a good idea as I am reading the warning label. After all this is a forbidden scroll. However there is a way to stop Naruto from being turn into a kid once the Jutsu is casted".
Shocked that there is a way to save his dad Boruto asked her, "There is a way then what is it?". Hinata looks at the rest of the scroll and said to him, "The only way for the target person that is reliving the painful memories can be save from this side effect is to have two people that believe in him from the beginning to be at his side at all times. The soulmate of this person must keep his chakra flow at a normal rate without waking him up. Therefore he will remain in his current state from the beginning to the end instead of being turned into a little toddler. The second person is to see how the target's body is being effected in a good way by feeling his emotions".
Sighing in relief Boruto was happy now if only he can find someone to be at his dad's side. Hinata rolls up the scroll and sighs saying to her son, "I understand why you are doing this. But I warn you Naruto has a hard time talking about his life. He doesn't want Kawaki, you or Hima to go through what he went through. I was able to witness him go through it and even I don't like talking about it. However I will allow you to cast the Jutsu when Naruto is deep in his sleep. I will have Iruka with me as well since he is what the scroll is referring to. Therefore you can three friends to come with you. See you after dinner".
And with that Hinata gave her son the scroll back and left the room. Upon hearing that Hima and Kawaki have returned home, Boruto decided to hide the scroll. He left his bedroom by escaping through his window.
Walking into the village Boruto was so happy that he accidentally bumped into someone. "Agh Sumire why are you here in the path that I am walking". Rubbing her head, she apologized to him saying, " I'm sorry I was just taking a walk with Tsubaki and Sarada. Because I decided to talk to Tsubaki so she can get a better understanding of Wasabi and Namida, since we all failed the Chunin Exams last time".
Tsubaki on the other hand say to Sumire, "Well it isn't my fault I moved to Konoha at an early age by attending the Academy with you guys. How was I supposed to know I would be paired with Wasabi and Namida while you would be training solo by keeping Nue in check".
"Sumire you don't have to explain yourself to his idiot. He was probably thinking about the ramen contest that he trie to accomplish no thanks to Aunt Hinata holding that record", Sarada say while smirking at the blonde.
Having a tick mark on him, Boruto "Shut Up know it All. Just because we are teammates with Sumire doesn't mean you can boss me around".
"Oh yeah well last time I check I am older than you since I'm a March baby and you are a September 10 baby. Funny how you and your dad share the same birthday!", Sarada say in a sarcastic way.
Tsubaki on the other hand interrupted there argument by asking the blonde, "While I do love seeing you and Sumire get along. Why are you so happy Boruto. And what is in you backpack?".
'The scroll! I can't let them know!' Boruto mentally face-palmed as he looked to see Sarada giving him the scowl of irritancy and disdain.
"It's nothing so…" Boruto tried hiding his scroll.
"Nothing huh" said Sarada in a mocking tone.
"Yes so what" Boruto said in a fury.
"The Lost Scroll…of Regained Memories" said Tsubaki who had sneaked up on Boruto which freaked him out.
"How did you" Boruto asked her in curiosity.
Smirking Tsubaki says "I am a Samurai by heart from The Land of Iron. But I still love learning how to combine my swordsmanship skills with your village's ninja skills as an honorable member of Konohagakure".
"I guess I can't hide anything from you girls", Boruto said in defeat. Boruto leads the girls to Ramen Ichiraku, which was the usual hangout for the girls. At the back of the restaurant that was when he told the girls what he wanted to do.
Once again Boruto you're an idiot. You clearly don't know about boundaries as you're just invading your dad's personal space without his consent!" Sarada said in anger by crossing her arms.
"For once I actually agree with her. Mainly because it's wrong to get some dirt on someone we barely know about", Tsubaki said while eating her secret sash of French fries.
While being nervous Sumire said in concern, "Have you actually thought about what could go wrong if your plan actually works on your dad. This is your own father we are talking about".
While being calm Boruto said "Relax Sumire. I already red the warning labels and my mom including grandpa Iruka are going to help us out by making sure nothing doesn't happen to my dad. In fact my mom gave me permission to actually do this. She thinks it will be a good experience for me to idolize my dad even more, at least that's what I think".
"Well I still think it's risky Boruto. Even with Aunt Hinata's permission" Sarada said while not looking at the blonde.
Smirking the blonde then replied with a little blackmail saying, "Oh this great. This is actually coming from someone who idolizes my dad's career as an Anbu leader. You mean you wouldn't be a little curious about seeing what my dad's early life was like?".
Sarada had to stop herself from hitting the young blonde. To her Naruto was a man she admired and she would often wonder what the reason was that made her idolize the young man. While not acknowledging Boruto's theory Sarada said in a low voice, "I am a little curious about Uncle Naruto's story and maybe about my dad's life as well".
Making a fist in the air Boruto shouted out saying, "I knew it. Wait did you just say you are curious about your dad's life too?".
Yes Boruto you don't have to repeat what I said Sarada says with anger on her face. Hearing this made Boruto afraid, learning about his dad is fine but Sarada's dad was a whole another level. The blonde had hear stories about Sasuke being a criminal and felt that Sarada should not see it. Like Naruto, Boruto as well didn't want Sarada to become another Sasuke as that was already filled somewhat by Kawaki.
Gulping the blonde told his two female teammates and Tsubaki, "I don't think that's a good idea. Sarada no disrespect but you are your own mother's student, whereas I am my dad's student and my older brother Kawaki is your dad's student". Nodding his head he hope Sarada can fall for the buff.
"Are you kidding me why can you learn about your dad while I can't learn about mine" Sarada said in full rage while grabbing the blonde's neck collar.
Struggling for air Boruto said, "You wasn't intrigued before". "Well I am now thanks to you idiot" Sarada say while punching him to the ground.
Getting of of the ground Boruto rubs his cheek. As the uchiha girl said to him in anger, "I'm going, end of story". Therefore there was no changing her mind.
Sumire then decided to speak as she went next to Boruto, in a kind tone she said, "Actually me and Tsubaki decided to join you two as well. We both want to your father's past, no matter how bad it might be".
Agreeing after finishing her fries, Tsubaki said with confidence, "After all your mother did say learning about someone's history will help us understand them more, and will help us build character. Therefore I am in as well".
Seeing how there is no stopping them Boruto thought in annoyance, 'Good grief I am stuck watching dad's origin story with these three girls. I wouldn't mind doing this with Sumire as we both deeply love each other, and want to build our teammate skills even more. But to watch dad's life with crazy Sarada and insane Tsubaki is just playing nuts. Oh well I might as well suck it up and enjoy it'.
Huffing Boruto looks away from the girls, and says while walking "Come on let's plan out what time you girls can come to my house. Mom said I can only bring three people anyway and sadly it's you and Tsubaki miss know it all Sarada. I don't mind having Sumire though as she's more nice than you Uchiha".
Before he can say anymore he gets punched again by Sarada. "You got some nerve, be grateful it's us and not Shikadai, Denki, and Inojin!". Nodding Tsubaki also put her two cents in saying, "Or Chocho, Wasabi, and Namida". Agreeing Sumire even said to him, "Or Metal Lee, Iwabee or Mitsuki".
"Ok I get it. Just tell me what time you girls are coming over already!", Boruto shouts in annoyance.
"We can come right after you dad gets in" said Tsubaki in a matter of fact tone. "Yeah Boruto what time does your dad come home?" said Sumire who was a little confused that Tsubaki brought it up. "For once they do have a point", Sarada said while nodding her head.
"My mom said we can activate the Jutsu when dad is deep into his sleep. She wants to make sure we all eat dinner and hopefully my siblings will be asleep", Boruto said while thinking out loud.
Holding her sword tightly Tsubaki said in seriousness, "We didn't ask that. We just ask what time does he come from doing his Anbu missions?".
Getting scare for his Boruto said to them, while waving his hands around, "I don't know maybe 9:30pm or 10pm".
Satisfied the girls were happy with the response. With a little smirk Sarada said to him, "We be at your house around 10:30pm or 11pm. Just to be on the safe side. We will hide our chakra so your dad doesn't sense us too".
"See ya idiot can't wait to see you pee your pants when we watch your dad's memories. I am pretty sure that your mom is explaining all of this to Iruka privately over the phone. Soon long loser" Sarada said while waving him as she, Sumire and Tsubaki take their leave.
In an huff tone Boruto replies back while stomping his feet by saying, "We'll see who gets scare first know it all Uchiha, and it won't be me. You're going to be the one who gets scare first not me. You can count on it Believe It!".
And with that the boy walks away hoping his plan can work out perfectly. As he returns home he notices that Kawaki and Hima are setting up dinner. And much to his surprise Iruka was already at the table chatting with his mom. His dad was probably on his way back from his Anbu mission. That gave the family enough time to get ready to eat.
Boruto try to strike a conversation with Kawaki, however the older sibling wasn't in the mood to chat as he wanted to eat dinner and train with Sasuke as soon as possible. Hima was wondering when Naruto would come home so she can show him how much of the dessert she made for him to eat.
As the family ate dinner Hinata told the kids that Iruka would be staying for the night by sleeping in the study room, as he had more papers to look over from the Academy. Kawaki and Hima brought the lie but Hinata and Boruto knew the real reason Iruka was here.
After Kawaki and Hima finished their dinner, the two went upstairs to get ready for bed as Kawaki had to go train, while Hima had to get ready to go to the Academy in the morning.
Once the two were upstairs as faith would have it Naruto came in much earlier than expected at 7pm. He said to his family while being at the front door, "I'm home". Boruto got up and raced to hug his dad shouting to him, "Welcome back dad! How was your mission? Did you got to see someone you haven't seen in a while?".
Ruffing his son's hair Naruto took off his fox mask, and said to the boy in a gentle manner, "If you're referring to Inari? Then yes I just got back from helping him keep an eye on the great bridge that is in the Land of Waves. I also got to visit Tazuna and Inari's mom as well. They all told me to tell you that they said hello and hope for you to come visit them when you are in the area".
As Boruto got off of his dad, Naruto took off his shoes and walked into the dining room to see Hinata and much to his surprise his adopted father Iruka. In a complete shock Naruto said to them, "Woah what's the occasion dad? Last time you were here you wanted me to see if I can request a special holiday of foster father's spending more time with their adopted children. Which thankfully is official now thanks to Sakura's role as the Seventh Hokage".
Shaking his head Iruka said to him with genuine love, "Well I am actually here to look over some more documents for the Academy. You can help me look over which ones to give to Sakura".
Shaking his head Naruto said to him while sitting at the table, "I'll pass. Politics and documents are your passion not mine. Besides I am glad I was able to find my own passion by traveling the world while in Anbu training. Then again suppressing my dark emotions was more easy than I thought".
Upon hearing this as Hinata gives Naruto his food Boruto thought in his head, 'Dark emotions what's he talking about?'.
As Naruto was eating Iruka decided to go chill in the study room. After Naruto finished his meal at 9:30pm he thanked Hinata by giving her a kiss. He then said good night to Boruto and walked upstairs. Before taking a shower he went to check in on Kawaki, who he saw was sleeping Naruto walks in a ruffle Kawaki's head as the boy toss in his sleep.
After leaving Kawaki's room, Naruto went to check on Hima. As he would predict Hima was fast sleep while snuggling her fox plush. Naruto smiled as it was the same fox plush that he had a toddler, even though it was worn out Hima chose to treasure it just as much as he did. He walks into his daughter's room and kissed her on the forehead. He whispered to her, "Night Hima" and while walking he heard her say while dreaming "Night daddy".
Chuckling Naruto closed the door and goes to his room to get a set of pajamas. He then takes a well deserved shower. Upon entering the room he sees that it is 10pm. He decides to go to sleep as he had a feeling that he should. He then gets into the bed cuts the light off and goes to sleep.
At 11pm Naruto is deep into his sleep. As Boruto, Hinata and Iruka are in the bedroom with him.
"Geesh, where are those girls?" Boruto grumbled to himself as he crossed his arms while waiting inside. "Um Hello" Sumire whispered as she jumped into the room, making Boruto trip.
"Sumire! Don't scare me like that, Believe it" Boruto chided in whisper tone to his crush who merely apologized in response. "I'm sorry, Boruto. I should have tip toed" Sumire says while smiling as Sarada sighed.
"So is he ready?" Tsubaki asked by getting down to business.
"Yes as a matter of fact he is. Don't worry about being too noisy in the house, my son is a pretty heavy sleeper" Iruka said with pride as he closed the window that the girls came in from. Naruto continued snoring like a baby as Team Mirai and Tsubaki made their way to Naruto and Hinata's bed.
"Wow, Iruka really wasn't lying…" Sarada blinked.
"I wonder if you snore the same way Boruto. I would love to see a drawing of that!" Tsubaki said with sarcasm, not even noticing Boruto's wide eye expression on the boy's face.
"Let's do this!" Boruto smiled as he unsealed the scroll before setting it on Naruto's bedside. As Sarada, along with Sumire and Tsubaki looked over Boruto's shoulder, they all noticed the kanji tag at the end of the scroll.
"A Kanji for 'Past Memory'?" Tsubaki asked, while looking at Boruto.
"Oh so that's what that was for! Tsubaki you're more sharp than I am, thanks for noticing!" Boruto said as he looked over the contents of the scroll.
"Okay….time to apply the hand sign seal for 'Memory', onto dad's forehead" Boruto said as he gently placed the seal on Naruto's forehead.
"Ok girls let's do the accurate hand signs" he said as Boruto's eyes followed down the page to where he and his teammates and Tsubaki all saw the necessary hand signs for the jutsu.
"Alrightly then!" Boruto said as he and his team made the appropriate hand signs.
"Ninja Art…Mind Trick…Genjutsu Surveillance Jutsu!" Boruto yelled as he slammed his palm onto Naruto's forehead with the tag on top.
Before the team of Genin and young samurai knew anything, a bluish-purple fog like mist started to emit from Naruto's head as it surrounded Team Mirai and Tsubaki.
"Whoa it's working!" Boruto exclaimed as it started to slowly surround the three.
"What's happening now!?" Sarada remarked in fright, while also amazed at how thick the foggy mist was. Sumire was amazed as well but chooses not to show fear like Sarada did.
"Be on guard. I think we are going into Mr. Naruto's mindscape" Tsubaki said while holding onto Sumire's hand.
"Everyone hold on!" Boruto said, holding his hands out as his team and Tsubaki tightly grasped his palms as the mist started to slowly grab the four children completely as their bodies disappeared completely out of sight.
Nothing was there but the open scroll on the floor in Naruto and Hinata's bedroom. Along with a sleeping Naruto, and a wide awake Hinata and Iruka who place seals all over the doors and windows so no one couldn't come in the bedroom or get out of it.
Sighing Hinata said to her father in law, "Boruto be safe". Iruka reassured her by saying, "They did their part Hinata. Now it's time to do our part by making sure Naruto isn't turn into a kid or another age he was when it happened back then".
Agreeing Hinata started the necessary hand sign as Naruto was about to start deage. While Iruka made sure to check on Naruto's emotions by checking his aura. Grabbing onto her husband Hinata said to him, "Everything will be fine Naruto. I'm right here, ready to protect as I try to back then".
Without even noticing the two adults fail to realize that Naruto had a faint smile on his face. As the man's body begin to glow in the color of gold. "He looks fine for now Hinata as he seems happy. Let's hope that Naruto can join the kids on this adventure in his current form" Iruka said with a satisfied smile.
Nodding Hinata remained focused at the task at hand, as the real challenge for them has finally begun.
