Sweet summer night air filled the lungs of Tzekel-Kan as he watched from the temple looking down at the square where everyone was gathered. Food, drink, games, the feast would be spectacular….if you liked that sort of thing. A silence fell over the clamor as the goddess emerged from the temple towering above the city.
Dressed as a man, a wrap around her hips with a belt and a sash binding her breasts, her delicate arms adorned with bracelets as her ears beheld glorious golden earrings. One thing he did notice was that she was skinny, her ribs did not show but she was slender for a woman.
When her feet touched the bottom steps of the pyramid temple the music began, a great symphony of drums, flute and stringed instruments. He watched as she smiled broadly at them all, spreading her arms and he could see her eyes float from face to face before drifting up and landing on him. It made him shy back from the edge of the gods temple, it felt like he was intruding on something.
Meanwhile Chief Tannabok spoke to his subjects. "Big smiles, like you mean it."
He was wary of this woman who called herself Agrat, who had pale eyes and flaming hair, surely their gods looked more like the people of El Dorado? The dancing of the people was causing the very air to vibrate with rhythm. To his surprise Agrat went to the middle of the crowd, beginning to dance like how a tree shakes in a storm. Everyone stopped to watch as she spun and twirled, long hair obscuring her face but she looked very concentrated.
Moving her pelvis and stomach in an almost belly dance she jerked her hips as the men watched in admiration and the women in wonder. Eerie, strange dancing that she practiced with her eyes closed and her arms above her head. Barefoot and beautiful she declined the wine they poured for her and the fruit, her soft voice almost amused.
"That is not what I crave."
Only when dawn began to creep into the sky did she retire back to her temple as the rest of the people began to feel the fatigue of the night. But as the day broke Tzekel-Kan himself went to wake the deity and as he walked up the many steps to the temple he felt rather nervous. Preposterous.
"My lady? Are you awake?" Opening the curtains he stepped in and looked around only to find her curled up on one of the couches. Breathing barely at all her eyes snapped open as he walked closer.
"Ahh…is it morning?" She yawned and stretched sitting up and her top had fallen open during the night. He immediately averted his eyes and half turned so he could not see the perky breasts that rested beneath her hair.
"Yes it is. I invite you to oversee the ceremonial sacrifice I had orchestrated for you." His face was painted with a skull and gold bars were intertwined in his hair to resemble bones. She seemed to take interest in that as she tightened up her top once more securing her breasts.
"Your costume." She paused for a second. "I like it. Lead me to this sacrifice." Could he detect a hint of enthusiasm in her voice?
Bowing he led the way down the many stairs and to the sacred perch that overlooked whirlpool. Touching his face as they approached she stood back by the chef and Tzekel-Kan spoke to the citizens in a booming voice.
"Our goddess has awakened!" The cheering made him smile as he continued. "This city has been granted a great blessing and what have we done to show our gratitude? A meager celebration. The gods deserve a proper tribute!" A large bag tied with flowers and gold string was brought forth and just back from the edge of the perch. "The beginning of a new era, the dawning of a new age demands…sacrifice!"
As he spoke the bag writhed and split open like fruit to reveal a man, a drugged man, shaved bald and painted white like a skeleton. The man shakily stood and his bound hands were held tight to his chest as Tzekel-Kan held his mexicolore, a type of wooden bat with obsidian shards driven into its flattened sides, pressing the man to the very edge of the precipice. Raising his mexicolore above his head he was about to strike the man when a voice was heard. It was deep, like a mans, but somehow more bestial. It came from Agrat who pointed at Tzekel-Kan.
"Stop."
She lowered hand as an eerie quiet fell upon the crowd and upon the high priest and chief.
"I desire this sacrifice…" She licked her lip as if they were dry and then settled her ghostly gaze on the frozen high priest. "...to be taken to my temple."
Chief Tannabok spoke quickly. "Take the tribute to the goddesses temple."
The man was then half carried past them towards the path that led back to the city. Tzekel-Kan lowered his mexicolore and he watched in disbelief as the chief then spoke to the flame haired woman who allowed the tribute the people had gathered be placed in her temple as well.
Turning she walked towards the temple and Tzekel-Kan looked at the stone floor before at her disappearing form. What had he done wrong? Had his goddess forsaken him?
Meanwhile Agrat thanked the chief for his mountains of gold, circling around the human tribute who sat in a daze on the floor before her throne. As the humans departed she knelt behind him and smiled from ear to ear, her delicate hands tracing up his spine to his shoulders.
"Do not fear…I am here. I am all that you will know." Putting her lips by his ear he could only partially hear her words but these he heard clearly. "And you look so, so so…delicious."
