Chapter 1
A new beginning.
Moving to Atlanta had proven to be the right thing for Michonne. the first few months were difficult for her to adjust to city life after king county. But now she's been living in the city for 10 years and is well adjusted to the city's noise and how It sings.
Michonne sat at her desk looking at a gold plaque with her name on it, A smile crept onto her face as she recalled her time in law school. Next to her plaque sat a photo with herself, her son, a then 5 year old Andre, and ex husband Mike. Michonne had no intentions of dating anyone during her time in law school, let alone having a child while she was in school. But life had different plans for her. She ended up running into a much more mature Mike while grocery shopping one day, and they began rekindling their middle school romance and 9 months later Andre was born, Michonne never thought of herself as a maternal figure, but she knew the moment she held Andre in her arms she'd do anything for him.
Michonne picked up the photo smiling at it and giving it a peck before placing it back down.
A knock on the door brought Michonne out of her nostalgia funk.
Michonne: it's open!
Monica: Ms. Hawthorn your 4 o'clock just canceled.
Michonne sighed: thank you Monica.
Monica: Ms. Hawthorn I've been thinking, you work so hard, and I want to thank you for giving me an opportunity to shadow you, how about we go out tonight?
Michonne: thanks for the offer Monica, but this business isn't gonna run itself, what about the 4th of July? we'll be closed, how about we go out then?
Monica: yeah that works for me.
Michonne got back to work shuffling through her case files, she looked up to see Monica still standing in her door way smiling and fiddling with her fingers.
Michonne: anything else?
Monica: huh..oh.. um.. no, sorry...
Monica proceeded to walk out before coming back to Michonne's office.
Monica: actually I just wanted to thank you again for the internship and opportunity, to work for someone such as yourself.
Michonne softly smiled: it's no problem Monica, women such as ourselves have to work together, we have to prove that we're just as educated and worthy as anyone else, Especially in our field of work.
Monica stared in awe and fascination listening to Michonne.
Monica: that! is so, true Ms. Hawthorn.
Michonne: Monica, I've told you a thousand times you can call me Michonne.
Monica: I know, I know, I know, but you're my boss…and I have to, no I want to! be respectful of that.
Michonne giggled at Monica's train of thought.
Michonne: its getting late you should had home.
Monica: you need a ride?
Michonne: when did you get a car?
Monica: oh…. I don't have…a car, I figured I'd ask to be polite.
Monica gave Michonne a friendly smile along with a shrug.
Michonne chuckled: no thanks, I'm good, I was gonna stay awhile and file some paperwork.
Monica: ok don't stay too late, I'll see you tomorrow.
Hours had passed as the sunlight began to dim, Michonne looked at the clock and it was already 7pm, she stood up from her desk grabbing her purse and a few files, she greeted the security guard, and began making small talk with him while waiting on the elevator. The elevator arrived and she proceeded on her way to the parking garage, walking over to a bright red 2020 Hyundai. Michonne made sure to lock her doors before settling into the quiet atmosphere of her car, taking a much needed break from her thoughts, a few minutes had passed before she started up her car and drove home.
Michonne pulled into the driveway of her home, finding the house lit up with lights. She gathered her things and made her way into the house.
Upon opening the front door Michonne was hit with loud noise from the living room TV and the burnt smell of popcorn.
Michonne: Andre Elijah Hawthorn!
Andre's eyes went wide from hearing his full name and ran to meet his mother at the door.
Andre: yes, mommy? Andre said giving Michonne a full smile showing all his teeth.
Michonne: what is going on? What is burning and why is the TV so loud? And why are all the lights turned on?
Andre put his arms behind his back fiddling with his fingers and started swaying side to side.
Andre: well… I thought we could do a movie night, so I was trying to make popcorn… but I left the bag in the microwave too long… I'm sorry, mom.
Michonne smiled at the young boy who was already half her size at just 10 years old, she couldn't believe how kind and thoughtful he could be.
Michonne pulled him into her arms and hugged him tightly kissing his head "thank you, dre c'mon let's go make some more popcorn and watch that movie".
Michonne: what movie is it, anyway?
Andre began singing the opening intro to every Avengers movie, making Michonne giggle and she joined him in finishing the song.
Andre: Avengers Infinity War!
Michonne: oh, that's a good one.
Michonne listened to Andre talk about Spiderman and all his favorite marvel characters, as she showed him how to prepare popcorn. Once the popcorn was done she poured it into a large bowl as Andre grabbed 2 sodas from the fridge and followed his mom into the living room, sitting beside her and crossed his legs sitting Indian style, excited to be watching the movie for the hundredth time, and to be spending time with his mom, an hour into the movie Michonne looked down at Andre who fell asleep in her lap. She smiled at him, and caressed his soft hair before kissing his head.
