"Grandpa, why do we travel all the time?" I asked as I finished my daily physical training. I had already finished my chakra training, so I knew that he would tell me a story while I meditated. He laughed, "Alright, Alright. You know if you wanted to hear our history you just had to ask." I smiled and sat in the lotus position. Once I immersed myself in the flow of my chakra he started his tale.
"Our story began over a thousand years ago when our ancestor Hagoromo Ĺtsutsuki performed a ritual called The Gift of Chakra. It would mutate his magic into something new and he hoped, someday, it would allow people to connect to each other and eventually lead to a world free from violence. The art was called Ninshu and for the next 100 years he wandered, teaching all who would listen. By the end of his journey he had accepted 32 disciples including his own sons, and they all performed The Gift of Chakra."
"After Hagoromo was too old to travel, his disciples developed a village around their families. But eventually, time caught up to Hagoromo and he died after leading the village for 20 years. However before he died he had to choose a successor to lead the village, so he designed a test for his two sons. They both undertook his challenge and succeeded, each completing the test in a different manner. But he was not satisfied with their results, Asura was too trusting and was easily tricked while Indra was too controlling. On his deathbed he pleaded with his sons to put aside their differences and lead the village together."
"The brothers followed their father's last wish, but it did not work at first as they spent most of the time arguing. Asura wanted to teach everyone the way of Ninshu, however Indra argued that the chaos of the outside world proved they were not ready for such a power. A year after Hagoromo died Indra pioneered the field of ninjutsu and genjutsu. These could be taught before Ninshu and allow them to branch out in their own direction. Not wanting to fall behind his brother, Asura developed the field of taijutsu, designing a fighting style for each of the families."
"Time passed and they continued to compete, pushing each other to even greater heights. When Indra grew older he raised a disciple to take his place and Asura followed his example. Over time the village expanded bigger and the descendants of the original disciples of Hagoromo decided to take the name of their ancestors in honor of the peace they experience now. Over time it became apparent that The Gift of Chakra had an unintended side effect, each person who went through the ritual would develop different specialities. The Nara pioneered shadow manipulation, and at the clan's peak their shadows could hide entire dimensions. The Kaguya could control their very bones, shaping them to be as thin as silk or as dense as adamantium."
"200 years later a man would discover a new application of chakra that would cause the village to enter its golden age. Fuinjutsu, in which each type of elemental chakra had a different method that would be discovered over a period of ten years. Water nature was the original method of application to create ink, a seal would be drawn and used at a later time. Fire nature would be used to burn a seal, earth could be used to carve formations that could cover cities. It took five years to discover that lightning nature needed a conduit, something to control its wild nature. Wind nature was used in living formation and used to connect complex systems."
"When Uzumaki Arashi had only discovered the first method it caught the attention of one of the leaders. By the time Arashi discovered the next two methods he was accepted as one of the candidates for a future leader of the village. When he finally became one of the leaders he spread fuinjutsu throughout the village. The last two methods were discovered years after he ascended to the leader of the village. This began the golden age of our village but it would also be our downfall."
"Ninjutsu were effects that a person's chakra system could make. With an advanced artificial chakra system made with fuinjutsu anything could be possible and for the next 400 years we proved it. Our village had transformed from a small village into the most advanced city ever built. Everything from folding space to controlling the flow of time. Our fall came from our own arrogance, the Kama seal, a seal meant to conquer death. By implanting the seal on the clone body the conscience would be transferred when they died. Unfortunately when a person went through this process the mind would come out a little twisted. The man who invented the seal tested it on himself and eventually his mind broke."
"It started slow at first, a couple of people who traveled out of the city never returned. This kept happening and they could find no reason for the disappearances for 5 years. Then the first person, then the second over the next month all the missing people returned. In our arrogance we believed no one could sneak into our city, but a week after the last person returned a coordinated attack devastated the village. Each person that disappeared transformed into a living weapon with no regard for their lifespan. They had everything from giant pustules that released plague spores when they exploded to a Kaguya who had poisoned metal bones."
"After the monstrosities took down the defenses He entered the city. No one noticed at first but one by one he used his knowledge of sealing to steal the chakra of every person he touched. This not only increased his capacity but copied their unique abilities as well. By the time all of the monstrosities were either sealed or destroyed he had bought enough time to steal the abilities of every clan and had 100 times the chakra as the largest reserves in the village. Everyone fought him but he turned our strengths against us, Naras were strangled by their own shadows and the Yamanaka had their minds shattered."
"Eventually they beat him but by this point every clan was down to ten members or less. Before he died he laughed, "It doesn't matter, I still win." Then he folded into himself until he winked out of existence. Our ancestors did not take his threat as seriously as they should have, if they did perhaps we would not be the last. Over the next year they worked on rebuilding the city, but before they finished there was a string of attacks. Over the next month they were taken out one by one until each clan had no more than three members. So they gathered all knowledge and gave each group a copy and connected each copy. Then they scattered, each clan going in a different direction."
"They knew that if they couldn't learn anything about their hunter then they would all die. So they left it to luck and tried to buy as much time for the next group. And it worked, as more people sacrificed themselves they spread out further and gathered more information. After 7 groups died they discovered that the hunter couldn't be killed and could heal from any injury. By the time 100 years passed there were only 9 groups left, but we scattered across the world."
"One of the groups was descended from the Uzumaki line and they devised a seal that they believed would trap the hunter. So they lured him into a trap and it succeeded, at least for a little while. 50 years after he had been sealed the Uzumaki line was almost wiped out. However they were able to send a warning to the rest of the groups. More time passed and every group planned ambush after ambush trapping him for 50 years at a time, some managed to trap him multiple times but they were still exterminated one by one. But he was relentless so as a last ditch attempt the last three groups decided to try and destroy him once and for all."
"And they still failed." My grandfather shot up and spun around at the man that appeared behind him. I couldn't move, this was literally the man of my nightmares. He was covered in white tattoos, but what really caught my attention was his smile. I will never forget that smile, the pure malice and hunger that radiated from it. My grandfather started to walk towards the monster garbed in human skin. "Kai, as I was saying the plan was to destroy him once and for all, and now we have." With that the monster drove a hand through my grandfather's chest.
I awoke with a gasp and tried to calm my racing heart, listening to the wheels going over the track. Smelling the leather and feeling the breeze from the open window. I took a deep breath in and then exhaled, once my heartbeat was calm I took out the scroll. It is a cylinder decorated with red and green jade with symbols along its length. I pulsed my chakra into one of the symbols and the top popped open. I pulled a scroll out and stared at it for a moment. It was a practice of my people to leave a last message.
Kai, I know that you may hurt right now but the first thing you need to know is the hunt is over, we won. We knew that we couldn't beat the hunter anymore, all of us left were too injured to put up any sort of fight. We could not drag outsiders into our problems either. So we prepared a trap, a fuinjutsu formula so complex that it would use the death of every person to set up a seal to destroy him once and for all. Every time he killed a person a seal would transfer. My death was the last step, every death before mine was to control the devastation my death would cause.
With a shudder I remembered the scene, right after he thrust his hand through my grandfather's chest a formula spread out on the ground around them. The hunter jerked back trying to tear his arm out of my grandfather's stilled chest, a black spot appeared between them before growing to encompass both of them then the sphere shrank out of existence. Both my grandfather and the hunter were gone. I wiped my face and focused back on the letter.
Now that you are free to live your life, find somewhere that will accept you. But do not tell people what you are until you are strong enough to protect yourself. You have access to the library of the most advanced magical city ever, people will try and steal it if they know you have it. I recommend you use the overlay version for now. One last piece of advice from your grandfather. If you ever get the chance to go to the Fairy Tail guild, talk to Makorav and give him my name. He is a good man and will help you. Remember you may be the last of us, but we will always be with you.
By this point I couldn't stop the tears so I put the scroll back in the cylinder. I curled up on the seat and remembered all the good memories I had of my family. We may have been hunted but we still saw some amazing things, like The Frozen Falls of Tandoori, an iceberg that was rumored to be the result of a Ice Dragon King's self destruction. Or the White Sands of Arabaki, a desert made from the bones from the immortal army. I was snapped out of my memories by the intercom, "Arrival in Magnolia in five minutes." I straight and pulsed chakra in a different symbol, when I pushed the end of the scroll into my chest there was a ripple before It sunk into my chest.
A transparent blue screen appeared in front of me with 7 symbols: Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, Taijutsu, Fuinjutsu, Armory, Storehouse, Library. I opened the Storehouse and a black diamond appeared on my hand, with another pulse a sandwich appeared in my hand. When the train stopped I had eaten my lunch, so I walked to the guild. The streets along the way were packed with people, some were eating at food stands or watching the mages perform different magic shows.
I could feel my shoulders becoming lighter as I walked through the streets. I made my way to the center of town but I was distracted multiple times. There was a wizard that was using illusions to tell a story about a battle between two mages that altered the very terrain. Great blasts of magic and conjured creatures fought back and forth before I was able to draw my eyes away from the spectacle.
A couple minutes later something hooked my nose and drew me to a food stall selling warm cider. I couldn't resist buying the cider, but I made sure to not get drawn into the other stalls. I may not be broke but I definitely wasn't rich, I would need to save some of my money in case of emergencies. So while I made my way to the guild, I definitely made a wandering path. Eventually I made my way to the guild without buying anything else.
Before I even opened the door I could hear the chaos inside. While I debated whether or not to enter, a man launched out of the doors. A man twice my size with spiky white hair and a scar on his face rose to his feet and rushed back inside "Damit Natsu, a real man fights with his fists!" I looked into the building and saw Natsu laughing with his hair on fire.
As Elfman jumped back into the fight I looked for Makorav. Once I found him I walked up the side of the wall over the fight and dropped down from the ceiling, landing right next to him. He gave a whole body jerk at that "Damn it, don't scare me like that!" Makarov clutched his chest and gasped for air. He gave me a glare, "Well spit it out, what do you want?"
I rubbed the back of my head, "You Makarov?" He nodded and waited for me to explain, "My grandfather told me to find you for help." His face softened, "You must be Kai." I almost fell over in shock and he laughed at my expression. "Kento was the only mage I knew that could walk on the ceiling. So what does the old monkey want now?"
My face lowered and he paled, "I assume the hunter caught up?" I nodded and tried to stop myself from crying. "Why don't we go to my office and you can tell me your story?" He jumped off the bar and guided me back to his office. Once he sat me down I started my story. I didn't tell him about my family's history but I told him that I had magic and my grandfather died to destroy the Hunter forever. He offered to let me stay with him for as long as I needed to, "Your grandfather saved my life, it's the least I can do." I agreed and we made our way to his house. I would spend the next year living there until I made enough money to buy my own place.
I also joined the guild and made friends with the other kids there. I would read with Levy and hang out with Gray and Cana during meals. I didn't really get along with Laxus as he was already more arrogant than I could deal with on a regular basis. I helped Elfman with training his body and magic after he saw me training during the morning. I could not train him in chakra but physical exercises could be done by a person with no chakra. After a while he told me about his younger sister's death, I was able to help with that as well. During the golden age of our village people would seal artificial chakra creatures to borrow their power.
Sometimes the creatures would have instincts that would be hard to control, the methods devised to help could be used by Elfman as well. After he was able to do a Full Body Takeover without losing control he declared that I was his new brother. We went out on some jobs together after that, and continued to train together. Time continued to pass and one day after we trained together for an entire year we took the job that would change my life forever.
