Chapter 1: Humility

A ragged hooded figure walked across the countryside, "She said it would be over this way….Huh?" said the figure as he saw a small building ahead on a hill, it had a sign on it, 'The Boar's hat.' "I think this is it." as the ragged figure walked up to the door and slowly opened it.

Inside the small pub, the air was lively as several men enjoyed their ale. "Here you guys go, five cups of ale." said the Bar keep as he put down several drinks on the table.

"Alright, let's drink up boys." said One customer as they began to drink their booze.

"Oh man, the only thing that would make this better would be something good to eat." said another customer.

"Coming right up." said the young blonde bar keep as he went to the back and quickly came back with a large plate with a meat pie on it. "The Boar Hat's Meat Pie Special."

"Alright, let's dig in." said the table of men as they each took a fork of the meat pie and put it in their mouths. Soon their faces turned green before they spat the food out, "THIS IS DISGUSTING!"

The young barkeep tilted his head expecting this, "Yeah we're known for booze not our food."

"Why you little brat…" as one of the men got angry.

"Do you mind if I have the rest of it then?"

The young barkeep's eyes went wide and turned to see a tall but ragged hooded figure, his face was covered by the overly large hood and the dark cloak covered the rest of the body so many became weary of the figure when they noticed him. "When did you get in here?" asked the young barkeep.

"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause any trouble." said the figure as he pulled down his hood revealing the face of a young man with long and slightly messy orangish hair. "I was just curious about having the rest of that meat pie. I don't want to fight."

The barkeep then realized that his hand had reached up to the sword hilt on his back. 'When did I reach for my weapon, and when did that guy show up here, am I that rusty?' thought the barkeep as he let go of the handle on his back.

"Kid, you don't want that," said one of the men. "It tastes terrible, I can get you some real food."

"It's fine," said the lanky young man as he grabbed a fork and began eating the disgusting meat pie, "Garbage should eat garbage." He said as he continued to eat the food.

The room became silent as everyone just watched as the young man just ate the slope without complaining once. The young barkeep went and grabbed a cup of water and placed it on the table. "Here, this one's the house."

"Oh thank you." said the Youngman as he took the cup of water and drank it.

"What's your name?" asked the Barkeep.

The young man put the cup down and stared at the barkeep, "My name is Damian, sir."

"Whatcha doing around here, Damian?"

"I'm traveling," said Daimian simply, "I'm looking for someone."

"Wait, have you been the rumored guy that's been wandering around?" asked one man.

"No, no, what's been wandering around has been that Rusted Knight," explained another man.

"Oh yeah, the ghost of the seven deadly sins." said another man as he turned to the wall of the bar as several wanted posters were, including the seven deadly sins, "It's hard to believe that it's been ten years since they tried to take over the kingdom."

Damian then noticed the barkeep's neutral face, "Have you heard any rumors about the seven deadly sins, sir?"

The barkeep turned to Damian, "Don't call me sir, just call me Meliodas."

"Meliodas.." Repeated Damian as he stared at the barkeep.

Suddenly the door to the Boar's hat was pushed open as a large rusted knight. "It's the GHOST!" yelled several men.

But before any of them could run from the knight, it fell over. "Ow." it squeaked cutely.

"Ow?" repeated the room.

Damian walked over to the down knight and removed the helmet, revealing long white hair and the face of a cute young lady. "It's a girl," he said.

"A girl?" repeated the room once more.

"A little help please," asked the young lady. Soon the young lady was able to get out of the armor, revealing that she was wearing a dirty old traveling dress underneath. "Thanks so much for the help, sorry for scaring everyone."

"Uh, don't worry about it." said Meliodas as he stepped forward towards the girl, "No harm done."

"What were you doing in that armor?" asked Damian, asking for the bar.

"Oh is that food?" asked the girl as she walked up to the unfinished meat pie.

"Uh ma'am, you probably shouldn't eat that." said Meliodas but it fell on deaf ears as she took a big bite of the meat pie.

The girl immediately spun towards Meliodas and spat out the food right in his face. "Gross that is disgusting."

Meliodas quickly wiped his face clean, "I tried to warn you."

"Oh I'm so sorry, mister." said the girl as she quickly found a napkin and started to try and wipe Meliodas' face.

Meliodas grabbed the girl's hands and looked deep into her eyes. "Your eyes?"

"What about my eyes?" asked the girl confused, before turning back to Damian, "Is something wrong with my eyes?"

Damian looked into her blue eyes, "Nothing wrong that I can see."

Meliodas shook his head, "Sorry miss, I just thought you looked like someone I know. What did you say your name was again?"

"Oh my name is Elizabeth." she said with a smile.

"Huh?" Melidos froze in a bit of shock as he looked at the girl.

"Elizabeth?" said one of the customers, "That sounds familiar."

Another man stepped forward towards Elizabeth, "Hang on a second young lady, what were you doing inside that suit of armor you nearly scared us all half to death here." he said slightly annoyed.

Elizabeth tilted her head slightly, "I did? I'm sorry I wasn't trying to scare anybody, I was just-"

"Hey what in the world is going on out here?" Everyone turned to the source of the voice as a pig exited the back room. "What's going on and what's with this rusted armor are on the floor." asked the pig.

The room went silent as they all stared at the pig, except for Meliodas as he plugged his ears. "A TALKING PIG!" erupted the bar.

"Wow, a real talking pig!" shouted Elizabeth as she rushed over to the pig. "Can you say anything else, what's your name?"

"Huh? Of course I can say more stuff, the name's Hawk." said the talking pig.

Damian looked at the pig confused for a moment before turning to Meliodas, "The pig's name is Hawk?"

"Yep." replied Meliodas.

"Hey you got a problem with my name bub?" asked Hawk.

"Well it's just not what I expected a talking pig to be called is all." said Damian feeling slightly bad for offending the pig.

"Oh yeah and what sort of name do you think would fit a pig?" asked Hawk who soon instantly regretted it as several of the other patrons began to voice their idea of a pig name.

"Hammy."

"Porky."

"Hamton."

"Porkerson."

"Sausage."

"Sausage isn't a name."

"I know I'm just hungry now with all of the pig talk."

"Got any edible ham slices?" one of them asked Meliodas.

Meliodas turned and looked directly at Hawk, "No but I know where to get some."

"AAHHHH DON'T EAT ME!" screamed Hawk as he hid behind Elizabeth.

Elizabeth puffed out her cheeks. "No eating the cute talking piggy."

The bar erupted once more at the sight of the teenage girl trying to appear intimidating. Though the fun time was soon over as a platoon of knights gathered outside of the bar, "Attention, this is the knights brigade from the Beard of the Mountain Cats." said the head knight. "My name is Alinoi and by order of the Holy Knights I need everyone to exit the building immediately."

"The knights!" yelled one man.

"What do they want?" asked another.

"Come on, put your drinks down and let's go." said a third as they began to make their way outside.

Damian was about to move when he saw Elizabeth starting to shake, with a look of fear on her face. "Hey don't worry about going outside if you don't want to, chances are they are after me and not anyone else here."

Meliodas looked at Damian with a blank look, "Why would they be after you?" Damian didn't answer as he made his way outside. "Well in any case as the owner of this place, I need to head out myself. Just stay here with Hawk." he said to Elizabeth as he made his way outside.

Soon everyone in the bar was gathered outside, "Is this everyone?" asked Alioni, "I apologize for ruining your good time but we have a report of a suspicious individual who recently arrived here, this individual has been going from town to town asking odd questions that have alerted us knights."

Before the knight could continue, Damian stepped forward, "Yeah that would be me."

Alioni stared down the young but rather tall young man, "What's your name young man?"

"Damian."

"How old are you, Damian?"

"17 right now sir, but I will be 18 here shortly." answered Damian with no hesitation or any signs of lying.

"Have you been the one traveling from village to village, looking for the Seven Deadly Sins?"

"If they are the nearby towns, then yes, that would most likely be me." answered Damian, "May I ask what it is I did wrong?"

"There was a report that in a nearby village there were two young individuals talking to one another in a cafe and they apparently spoke about the location of one of the deadly sins." stated Alioni as he narrowed his eyes at Damian, "Is that true do you know the whereabouts of one of the sins?"

"Yes I do," said Damian, quickly shocking the crowd. "But it wasn't the one I'm looking for."

Alioni quickly regained his composure. "Tell us what you know," he ordered. "Now."

Damian thought for a moment, "I apologize but before that I must know if you know the whereabouts of any of the other Seven Deadly Sins."

"What?"

"As I said before I'm looking for one of them myself, so before I tell you anything about the one nearby, I would like to know about any other sin you might know of."

Alioni was getting frustrated but tried to keep things calm, "Are you kidding me, the Seven Deadly Sins are dangerous and wanted criminals, for the safety of every citizen you need to tell us anything you may know so we can handle them. What purpose do you need to know about the sins?"

"I need to kill one of them." said Damian in a neutral, calm tone that shook the crowd even more. Meliodas just blinked as he looked at the back of Damian's head, "I am his shame, I need to find him and deal with him personally."

Alioni stared at Damian as if he was crazy, "Kid, there's now way you can take on one of the sins, you're not even a knight, you'll die."

"Maybe, I know I'm not the strongest but I still have to do it." said Damian.

"SIR!" a knight got Alioni's attention, "Look, someone is trying to run away." They all turned to see Elizabeth running as fast as she could towards the nearby woods.

"Elizabeth?" Spoke up Damian surprised to see her running away.

"The other young individual," said Alioni as if realizing some sort of truth. "Get her! She must be the other person that knows the whereabouts of the sin." Soon all of the knights rushed after the girl, but before Alioni could move as well Damian grabbed his wrist. "What are you doing?"

"Stop, she has nothing to do with this." stated Damian.

Alioni ignored the statement. "All of you go and get that girl." He ordered his men who quickly rushed after Elizabeth. "Now unhand me." As Alioni tried to pull his arm away but couldn't, 'What the hell, I can barely move my arm at all. How is this lanky brat so strong?' He wondered before reaching for his sword.

"Please don't do that." asked Damian, not wanting to fight.

Alioni quickly drew his sword and swung it at Damian, but before his blade made contact with him, he fell backwards as Damian had let go of his wrist. "You damn brat," swore Alioni as he fell on his butt, before he could get up something landed right next to him, it was the top half of a blade from a sword. "What the…" That's when he noticed that it was part of his sword, Alioni was still holding the handle of his blade but just above the guard where the blade started was nothing more than the broken remains of his blade. "YOU BROKE MY BLADE!?" shouted Alioni in a mixture of confusion and fear before he looked up and realized Damian was no longer around. "Where'd he go?"

~o~

Elizabeth kept running as she heard the knights chasing after her.

"Hold it, miss." Yelled one of the knights, "You're just making this worse for yourself."

"We just want to talk," said another.

"You're not going to outrun all of us."

"NO!" shouted Elizabeth as she kept running. 'I gotta get out of here. How do I lose these guys?' Wondered Elizabeth before her foot got caught on a fallen tree branch, tripping her. "Wah." she squeaked before she felt something grab the back of her shirt, keeping her from hitting the ground. "Huh?"

"You alright?"

Elizabeth turned around to see the tall young man from before, "You're Damian."

"Yeah, are you okay?" he asked again as he pulled her back up right.

"I'm fine but.."

"Wow you're quick." They turned to see Meliodas walking towards them. "You caught up fast."

"Not really," said Damian, "By the time I got here, you and that pig already took down everyone else.

"What?" asked Elizabeth before she noticed that every one of the knights that were chasing her were knocked down to the ground and Hawk was currently jumping on one of them. "You guys took them all down."

"Well they weren't exactly strong." stated Meliodas before noticing something in the distance.

"Get down." said Damian as he quickly pulled Elizabeth to the ground as the top part of the woods around them were suddenly cut in half by a powerful slice. The entire woods around them suddenly became a field of stumps as the top half of all the trees fell around them. Once they stopped falling Damian pushed a long off of him and helped Elizabeth up. "You alright?"

Elizabeth nodded with a slight blush, "I'm fine."

"Good," said Damian in a neutral tone before he noticed Meliodas standing on a tree stump looking at him. "Is everything alright Meliodas?"

Meliodas thought about it for a moment, "I'm not sure."

"Well I'm not alright," spoke Hawk, "We all almost got sliced in half."

"Sir Twigo!" The four of them turned to see Alioni and a man in red armor. "Our men were in those woods."

The man known as Twigo kept walking forward and noticed that all of the regular knights were alive but some of them were pinned under the trees he cut. "Confirmed, no deaths." he said with a slight annoyance before noticing Elizabeth, "But it seems I am in luck, that ear ring you wear girl, has the symbol of the royal family. Confirmed! You're Princess Elizabeth!"

"Princess Elizabeth?!" said Damian, Meliodas and Hawk in surprise.

"How lucky am I." said Twigo as he kept walking towards the group, "There is an order for your capture and return to the capital. Now come quietly and there won't be any-"

"NO!" Elizabeth quickly said.

Twigo stopped in surprise, "What?"

"I said 'NO'," repeated Elizabeth. "As your princess, I will not be going with you anywhere."

"I am a Holy Knight of the kingdom of Britannia." argued Twigo.

"I don't trust any of the Holy Knights," huffed Elizabeth.

Meliodas just looked at the girl with an odd look, "That's…an odd attitude?"

Damian raised an eyebrow, "What is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing, I guess this is just a first is all." spoke Meliodas out loud.

"Huh?"

Elizabeth then pointed a finger at Twigo, "I know what you holy knights did, I know you all betrayed my father to seize the throne, you all lied and set up a coup against him." Her words shocked those around the area. "Well I won't be standing by and doing nothing, I'll find strong warriors to beat you, I'll even find the Seven Deadly Sins if I have to."

Twigo tried his best but began to chuckle, "You are a delusional brat, even if you did find the Seven Deadly Sins, they would be no match for us holy knights. We are far more powerful than we've ever been, we no longer need the sins or anyone else. Our word is law and our actions are justice itself. You nor anyone else can oppose us."

Elizabeth wanted to argue more but instead Damian stepped forward, "Damian?"

"You're wrong," spoke up Damian, "There will always be people to stand up to tyrants, like you and the holy knights. Elizabeth is not alone, if she wishes, she will have me by her side."

Twigo looked like he wanted to laugh again, "You alone? Who do you think you are, boy?"

"I'm not alone…" said Damian but paused as he realized something and gave a dry laugh, "I wonder if she knew this would happen or if she can just see the future, either case I can't go back now." Elizabeth and Meliodas looked at him confused.

Twigo ran out of patience, "I don't know what you're babbling about but you have just confirmed your fate." Twigo grabbed his sword.

Alioni saw this and tried to warn him, "Wait, Lord Twigo-"

"DIE!" As Twigo slashed his sword causing a massive blast of wind that was cutting everything in its path. Damian reached behind him and grabbed something from behind him and swung it, creating a massive wind blast himself colliding with Twigo's attack causing it to cancel each other out in a blast of air. "What the?"

"I tried to warn you sir," Yelled Alioni as he ducked and braced himself from the blast. "That guy is strong."

Twigo then noticed what Damian was holding, "Is that a farming sickle? He canceled out my attack with a gardening tool."

"It's far more than just a simple gardening tool." said Damian as he held the small curved blade up, pointing it at Twigo.

Twigo huffed, "Well let's see if you can do that again." Twigo then swung his sword rapidly, sending several slashes at Damian. Damian simply began to match him swing for swing, slash for slash, canceling out each and every single one of Twigo's attacks. 'What the heck is going on here, how is this brat matching me, a Holy Knight, swing for swing.' Twigo then stopped his attack to catch his breath as he stared at Damian who wasn't even breaking a sweat. "Who are you, how are you doing this?"

"Moonlight," answered Damian, "Moonlight is simply the reflection of sunlight."

"What?"

Damian took his free hand and pulled a necklace from beneath his shirt, "I am one of the Seven Lively Virtues, the Dog Virtue of Humility, Damian is my name." as he held the necklace with a symbol of a dog on it.

"Seven Lively Virtues?" said Twigo in a mixture of confusion and fear.

Elizabeth thought about it for a moment, "Virtues..that's the opposite of Sins."

"Moonlight, huh?" said Meliodas as he started to realize and piece together who Damian was, "That's the opposite of Sunshine, isn't it."

Damian turned to Meliodas, "You would know wouldn't you Meliodas."

"Meliodas!" shouted Twigo as he looked at the short blonde, "What you look exactly like he did…but…but that was ten years ago, it can't be." said Twigo before noticing the symbol on Meliodas' arm, "The Dragon Symbol. The Captain of the Seven Deadly Sins Meliodas."

Meliodas then looked down at his arm and noticed his shirt was ripped, "Oh when did my shirt get ripped?"

"I think it must have happened during his first attack," said Damian, "When we all had to duck."

"Yeah maybe."

"HA!" yelled Elizabeth startling both Damian and Meliodas, she quickly took Damian's hand in one hand and Meliodas' in the other and raised them in the air, "See that I have both the Captain of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Captain of the Seven Lively Virtues helping me. Together we will win back our kingdom."

"Sure, I'm in." said Meliodas with a smile.

"I'm not a captain," stated Damian.

Twigo stood tall and dashed forward with a powerful swing, "You all must die!"

Meliodas quickly pulled out his sword, which was in fact a broken blade that was really just a hilt. Right after Twigo swung his sword, Meliodas swung his hilt, sending the slice right back at Twigo, with the aim being slightly off, only hitting the man in the shoulder.

"Oh wow, you're a real nice guy." said Damian, "You could have just redirected that attack right into that guy's face and ended it all."

"Yeah but that would have killed him."

"You damn brats," swore Twigo as he held his shoulder. "How dare you, I am a Holy Knight, you think a flesh wound like this would stop me." It was clear he was losing his grip on reality. "I will kill you all today. CONFIRMED!"

"Well, he's losing it." said Damian as Meliodas nodded in agreement. "You two step back, I'll finish this." Damian as he stepped forward, "The sun is setting and the moon will be out shortly." As he said this the small sickle in his hand began to grow until it became a full sized scythe, ordained with engravings of the moon. "And when that happens I won't be able to hold back all that well."

Twigo stared at the weapon in fear, "That tiny sickle grew."

"I told you, it was far more than a simple gardening tool." said Damian as he simply pointed his weapon at Twigo, "I'll show, but please try to use your sword to block the attack, I don't want this to accidentally kill you."

Twigo felt for the first time he could remember true fear. "Inconceivable." He raised his sword to his chest as Damian swiped his scythe in front of the man, it happened so fast, one moment Twigo was in front of them the next thing he knew he was soaring through the sky heading towards the mountains, before he collided with them one thought went through his head, 'He's a true monster, just like Escanor.'

Meliodas hopped up onto a downed tree and looked towards the horizon, "Wow, you knocked that guy clear towards the mountains."

"Thanks," said Damian as his scythe reverted back to a regular small sickle. "I really hope he was too hurt by that landing."

"Nah, he looked like he had a thick skull."

"That was incredible," said Elizabeth with stars in her eyes, "You two are so strong, you're both worth a hundred Holy Knights easily."

"Really?" asked Damian, wondering how true that was.

"The quality of knights have really gone down." said Meliodas as he jumped down from the tree. "So princess you're trying to find people to help you against the holy knights right? Well I can't speak for this guy here and his friends but the Seven Deadly Sins are here to help."

Elizabeth's smile grew, "That's wonderful."

"We just need to find them first."

"Same here," said Damian, "I have no idea where the other Virtues are at, well aside from one."

"Is it that girl you've been mentioning?"

Damian nodded, "Yeah she's the one who sent me this way, chances are she knew I would run into you." he said to Meliodas who had no real reaction, "I know where she is, she'll probably know where the other Sins and Virtues are. I can take you guys to her if you like."

"Yes please." said Elizabeth, "The sooner we find the Sins and Virtues the better."

"Yeah, I'm kind of curious about this girl you keep mentioning." commented Meliodas.

"Alright then we just need to figure out a way to get there, do you by chance have a horse and carriage?" asked Damian.

"Oh I got something way better than that." Meliodas then turned towards the hill where the pub was, suddenly several loud footsteps could be heard. Soon they could see the pub coming towards them as it was riding on the back of a giant pig.

"It's a giant pig!" shouted Elizabeth in awe.

"That's my mom." stated Hawk.

Damian then realized what the pub meant, "Oh I get it, the Boar's Hat. That's clever."

~o~

Hawk's mom stopped for the night and everyone was getting ready for bed, Meliodas went to double check on Elizabeth who was out like a candle. Meliodas looked upon the girl's sleeping form, 'Are you really my Elizabeth?' Wondered Meliodas.

Suddenly a noise downstairs got Meliodas' attention, he went downstairs to see Damian sweeping the floors in the dark, or it would be if he was slightly glowing. Damian then noticed Meliodas looking at him, "Oh I'm sorry, did I wake you?"

Meliodas shook his head, "No I wasn't even going to bed just yet, what about you, shouldn't you be going to bed in the spare room upstairs?"

"Oh I can't sleep. My powers won't let me." said Damian as he continued to sweep, "I can only sleep during the New Moon, aside from that I'm pretty much awake all of the time."

"I see that sounds pretty rough." said Meliodas as he looked at Damian, "Just out of curiosity does your personality change as well, like Escanor does?"

Damian shocked his head, "I don't believe so, but I will not lie, during the Full Moon when my power is at its peak, I think I become a little bit more confident. It's hard to say. I try to avoid people during that time, I become too strong to be around normal people." Damian then stopped sweeping. "Tell me, do you by chance know where Escanor is?"

"Nope." said Meliodas simply, "Why are you looking for him anyway?" Damian looked Meliodas in the eye contemplating whether or not to say anything. "You're related to him, aren't you."

"He's my father and I have to be the one to kill him."

The silence of the night filled the room as the two men looked at each other, "I see." said Meliodas showing no signs of emotions over the facts he had just heard. He just walked over to the bar and poured himself a drink. "So is there anything you can tell me about this person we're about to meet, what's her name?"

Damian went back to sweeping the floors, "Her name is Merry, she's a powerful mage and seemling knows everything, even about you. She's the one who told me I would find you in that village."

"Really, I didn't think I had any fans left." said Meliodas as he kept drinking.

"I don't think she's a fan, but she does need you for something. I'm not sure what but chances are the whole reason I'm here is to bring you to her."

"Really?"

"She also told me to tell you something," as Damian looked back at Meliodas. "That girl is not your Goddess."

After he spoke Damian stopped as he noticed Meliodas' eyes darkened, in the low light that Damian was casting, Meliodas looked demonic. "Now I want to meet this girl."

~o~

In the far distance in a small building sat a girl near a window, reading by candle light and enjoying a cup of tea. She had long black hair, red eyes and looked like a young teenager. She put her tea cup down and gazed out of the window. "Soon Meliodas we will finally meet. I've waited a long time for this." said Merry, "Let's save each other."
