May I ask for 13 - familial curse with all the bros?
Characters: Jeff, Lucy, Scott, John, Virgil
Warnings: Magic gone wrong, unconsciousness
Jeff and Lucy always knew that any children they have had the potential to be…different. After all, it isn't every day such a marriage happens...
When Scott was born the proud parents were equally as scared. What would he be like? He had dark brown hair like his father, his father's eyes and his mother's nose. As he grew they began to relax.
Once Scott began to toddle they became pregnant again, much to their surprise, and their second child, John, was the complete opposite to their first. Red hair like his mom, aqua eyes like his mom and his dad's chin…still they didn't relax until he began to walk and showed no tendencies at all.
Falling pregnant again had definitely not been their intention, but the brown-eyed, black-haired boy was a delightful surprise.
Scott doted on his brothers. He would do anything for them, and it was when Scott turned eight, John was six and Virgil five, that Jeff and Lucy realised they had been mistaken.
The sounds of the boys at play floated from under the closed door of the playroom. Jeff grinned – he always loved that sound. Scott really drew John out from his shell – their second child being quiet and withdrawn by nature and hated even at his young age anyone who wasn't family being around – and both Jeff and Lucy were thankful that Scott could reach John. Virgil and John were absolutely glued to Scott, following him in everything.
Jeff reached out to open the door a crack, but the sudden realisation that the handle was ice cold to the touch had him open the door a little more forcefully than he intended. He gasped at the sight.
The playroom was one large snowscape.
There was a huge snowdrift that undulated over three sides, and lots of snowmen. Unnoticed by his boys Jeff watched as John sat huddled with…a snowman? He appeared to be reading to it. But Scott and Virgil…
Scott was standing in the centre of the room. The floor was one sheet of ice clearly spiralling from his feet. Virgil – Virgil was leaping from one peak of snow and Scott was hurriedly somehow magicking ever bigger peaks to catch his brother with.
And then Virgil leapt and Scott…Scott slipped over.
As Virgil fell Jeff gasped, trying to race to catch his son but all he could do was slip on the icy floor. But Virgil wasn't afraid, Scott would save him, Scott always did. He noticed Jeff in the room and called out to him as Scott regained his feet and flexed his hands to work his magic.
'Hey Dad! Look what Scotty can do!'
Scott spun as the magic fired from his hands, and the movement threw off the spell. Instead of creating another snow peak the magic hit Virgil on the side of the head and it was all Jeff could do to get enough momentum to catch his now unconscious son.
As the realisation of what had happened hit Scott, the light icy covering turned into a heavy frost that spread up the walls of the room. Within seconds it was like the worst winter storms Kansas sometimes had, and Jeff felt like he was breathing ice.
Bursting from the room and calling Lucy he rushed Virgil to the kitchen where the fire was just dying down. Laying his child in front of the fire he stoked it hotter and added more fuel as Lucy, heavily pregnant with their fourth child, rushed in. John had followed and immediately sat by Virgil, placing his brother's head in his lap. Of Scott there was no sign.
'Jeff – I know what to do. You need to go comfort Scott.'
'But – but what do I say? What do I do?'
'You'll know, Jeff, once you're there. You're his Dad, you'll know.'
With a last look back at the two boys and his wife Jeff headed to the playroom.
Scott was standing forlornly in the centre of the room. Tears had frozen to his face. His breath hung in the air before disintegrating into what looked like snow. He was pale.
'How long have you been doing this for your brothers?'
'I – I don't know. Forever, I think.'
'Why didn't you say something?'
'I don't know. It didn't feel right to say something.'
'Can you control it? Can you…not use it?'
'I guess I can? I've never really tried.'
'Scott, your Mom is trying hard to help Virgil, I don't want you to worry, ok? But I think it would be best if you didn't use your powers anymore. Can you do that? For your brother's safety?'
'I – I – sure. I'll do my best.'
'That's all I ask, Scott.'
Pulling Scott into a hug, Jeff ruffled his hair and walked with him into the kitchen. Lucy was making hot chocolate and John and Virgil were curled up together on the floor.
Jeff never did find out how Lucy "healed" Virgil, but from that day onwards there was a small scar on his eyebrow and the boy just couldn't cope with being cold.
Neither Virgil nor John remembered about Scott and his magic from that time onwards.
And Scott, now a little more withdrawn from his brothers than before, tried his best to not use his magic.
Until one day when the family of seven plus their grandparents went on a winter holiday.
