Chapter 3

The hotel room was quiet as both brothers sat thinking about what happened last night. Most of the day they didn't talk to each other knowing each needed their space. Eventually Michael left the room to do what John could only guess. Maybe Michael was getting something from the vending machine. If that was the case then he should have said something since he was getting pretty hungry.

Michael returned a few minutes later, a newspaper in hand. He sat on his bed but only read the front page.

"What's up?" John asked his brother.

His brother turned the paper around so John could see a large picture of a middle-aged Texas Ranger that took up most of the page.

"It's him, the man from last night. He has a wife and a seven year old daughter." Michael shook his head. "Damn, hope he makes it."

"Well, we did what we could." John got up, stretched then patted his stomach. "Don't know about you, but I'm getting real hungry."

Michael put the paper down and got up. "Let's try that bar and grill the lady at the front desk suggested."

Later at the bar and grill John and Michael found a booth along a wall. As they waited for the waitress both took a look around them.

Eventually John began to look at the menu while his brother got closer to the photos on the wall. Suddenly Michael took hold of John's hand as he pointed at a photo.

"That dude is everywhere in here. Man, in some of the photos he's so young." Michael chuckled. "He almost looks like us."

The waitress approached their table with a smile. "That's Ranger Walker. He was like a son to the man who owned this restaurant." She pointed one photo in particular showing a very young Ranger Walker with a plaque in hand. "That was when he made it to the Texas Rangers."

"His photos are everywhere in here." Said John.

"He's kind of like a living legend in these parts. I heard that he's going to get a medal for saving that girl." She let out a sigh then took a pen out of her apron. "What can I get for you guys today?"

"We'll both have the daily specials with sweet tea." Michael handed the waitress the menus then turned to John. "John, what's up?"

"Why do you say that?"

"Because you got that look on your face. Is it about Ranger Walker?"

John nodded. "I really hope he makes it. Seems Ranger Walker is highly respected as an officer of the law. But with his injuries, he might not work again."

Michael let out a heavy sigh, a smile on his face. "But you gave him a chance to see his family again. Just remember that."

The door to the restaurant opened causing both twins to look that way. It was a nicely dressed black man and judging by the star on his chest he was a Texas Ranger. When the Ranger locked eyes with the brother's he made a bee line to their table.

He smiled down at the brothers, relief on his face. "My name is James Trivette and I've been looking for you two. I wanted to thank you two for saving my friend last night."

"No problem, just doing my job." John's voice faded as he took another look at the photos on the wall. "How is he?"

The older gentleman rested his hands on his hips with a sigh. "He's hanging in there but he did have a seizure last night. Doc said it could be due to brain swelling." He quickly ran a hand across his face then shook his head. "But he's alive." He once again gave the twins a smile. "Alex, his wife would love to meet you two."

"Sure. When?" Asked John.

"If you guys can do so today that would be great. Did you guys order yet?"

"Yeah, it should be coming out soon." Michael said. "Would you like something to eat?"

Ranger Trivette shook his head. "Thanks, but I'm not hungry." He turned to who appeared to be the manager of the restaurant. "Maria, the two gentleman in booth twelve, make their meals on the house. They're the ones that helped Walker last night." When the woman nodded in agreement Ranger Trivette brought his attention back to the brothers. "He's currently in the ICU at Methodist. Just swing by the waiting room. There's always someone there that can get hold of Alex."

A few hours later Alex sat by Williams' bed slowly rubbing his bruised left hand. Currently his right was in a soft cast until he gets strong enough to have surgery on it. Seeing the injuries told Alex he fought with all he had but it just wasn't enough.

Once in awhile his fingers would twitch but she knew it was just a muscle spasm. Though earlier today he had a very bad seizure that worried Doctor Abboud. Turns out blood clots were forming in Walker's brain which had to be removed with a surgical procedure. Hopefully it won't be a reoccurring thing but something inside her knew otherwise.

She gently patted her husband's hand then tried to smile. "I really wish I knew why you were there last night. What was so important?"

A light knock came at the door. "Alex, the gentleman are in the waiting room if you are ready to see them."

Alex turned to see Jimmy leaning against the door frame, his attention on Walker. That was another question that bothered her more than any other. Why wasn't Jimmy with him?

She gave Walker's hand a kiss on the forehead then stood up. "Thanks, Jimmy."

Once Alex made her way into the waiting room she abruptly stopped. There, standing in front of her were two men that could easily pass as Walker's sons. So much so she let out a quiet gasp. Who were these men?

The dark haired, more olive complexion twin went up to her with a smile that nearly made Alex cry. It was so much like Walker's that she took a small step back. Could the twins possibly be related to him?

"Hello. My name is John Norris and this here is my brother, Michael Garrison."

Alex gave John a hug then glanced at Michael. "Thank you so much for saving my husband."

"I was just doing what I was trained to do." John pulled back from the hug to look at his brother. "Heard he's going to make it."

"Again, it's all because of you two. Doctor Abboud told me he would be dead right now." Alex looked up at the two men who looked and sounded just like Walker with a smile. "Now, he has a chance to see his little girl grow up."

After a few more minutes of talking the men left so Alex returned to Walker's room. As she stepped up to Walker's bed Trivette shifted his chair to give her more space.

"They look and sound just like him. Don't they?" Trivette said while keeping his attention on Walker. "It's pretty eerie."

Alex sat down next to Jimmy then patted Walker's leg. "Yeah, but it could be anything."

Trivette nodded. "Maybe there relatives. Either way, I'm glad they were there last night." He took a deep, shaky breath as tears fell from his eyes. "Walker, why wasn't I there? Why did you keep me away?" He wiped a hand across his face as he cursed under his breath. "Alex, if I was there, this wouldn't have happened."
