The guys were hanging out in Central Perk one morning before going on their daily business. Chandler and Monica where sitting on the couch next to each other, Chandler's arm on the back of the couch behind Monica. Monica was talking about her work and Chandler set there with a smile on his face, looking at her and drinking her every word. He wasn't aware that Rachel was staring at him from her place near the table on the right. Rachel nudged Joey, who was sitting next to her, with her elbow.
"What?" Joey asked.
Rachel nodded with her head towards Chandler and Monica.
Joey looked at them and turned back to Rachel. "I know," he whispered.
"So I'm not imagining it?"
"No. He's been all over her lately."
"What are you two talking about?" Monica asked.
"Oh, Rachel accidently spit in my coffee," Joey said.
Chandler, Monica, Ross and Phoebe looked at Rachel disgustingly and Rachel looked at Joey angrily.
The next day Rachel was eating a sandwich at the kitchen table as Chandler walked in.
"Hey," Chandler said
"Hey."
"Did Monica go to her thing yet?"
"No, she's getting ready."
"Okay."
He walked over to the fridge and opened it, looking for a can of Coke.
Monica walked out of her room dressed in a short red dress with a deep cleavage, her hair in a bun.
"Hey, Rachel, how do I look?"
Chandler lifted his head from the fridge and starred at Monica, his eyes wide and his mouth open.
"You look great."
"Thank you," Monica smiled. Then she noticed Chandler. "Oh, hey, Chandler, I didn't see you there."
Chandler kept starring.
"Chandler!" Rachel said loudly.
"What?" Chandler turned to her.
"I called you three times. Can you bring me a Diet Coke please?"
"Oh, sure, sorry," Chandler said and took out a Diet Coke from the fridge, handing it to Rachel who looked at him oddly. "You look great, Monica."
"Thank you," she smiled.
Monica went to take her coat from the coat rack near the door. "Okay, I've got to go," she said. "I'll see you guys later. Bye."
"Bye."
"Bye."
"Oh, I forgot to ask Monica something. I'll be right back," Chandler said and went out of the door. When Monica heard the door open she turned around. He closed the door and smiled at her.
"You look gorgeous. Stunning. I'd kiss you but I don't want to mess with your lipstick."
Monica leaned close to him and whispered in his ear, "save it for later."
Chandler gulped and starred at Monica's back as she walked down the stairs.
Rachel decided she wanted to talk to Joey about Chandler and Monica. She went next door later that night. Chandler was sitting on the Barcalounger, watching TV.
"Hey, is Joey here?"
"Yeah, he's in his room."
"Thank you."
She walked to Joey's room and opened the door. Joey was sitting on the bed and reading a comic book. "Hey, can I talk to you?"
"Sure. What's up?"
Rachel sat on the bad next to him. "I think we should talk to Chandler about Monica."
"Really?"
"Yeah, he's only going to get hurt. He needs to try and get over her."
"You're right. Now?"
"Yeah, let's do it now."
They walked out of Joey's room, looking sadly at Chandler.
"Hey, Chandler, we wanted to talk to you," Joey said.
"Sure. What's up?"
"We've noticed recently that you… Well… You look like you've a crush on Monica."
"What? I don't have a crush on Monica," Chandler said quickly.
"Chandler, it's really obvious. You keep staring at her with a goofy look on your face. You're there for her every beck and call. You haven't been on a date in ages."
"You guys are imagining things."
"Look, I get it. It's hard falling for one of your friends. It sucked seeing Ross with Julie when I had feelings for him. We just think you should try and get over her. Go on a date with someone. Honey, it's not healthy pining for someone when they're never going to see you as more than a friend."
"Just stop," Chandler said. He stood up from the Barcalounger and stormed out of the door angrily.
Later that night, Chandler walked into Monica's room after Joey and Rachel went to bed.
"Hey," she smiled at him.
"Hey."
He walked over to the bed and laid next to her. "How was your work party?"
"It was nice, but I missed you."
"I missed you too."
She kissed him passionately on the lips and then she started kissing his neck, but she could feel he wasn't reacting to her as he usually did. She pulled back and looked at him, but he was looking away. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"You seem… Sad."
"No. I'm just tired."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, yes, it's been a long day. Let's just go to sleep, okay?"
"Sure." Monica said and cuddled up next to him and Chandler wrapped his arm around her.
The next few days Monica felt that Chandler was avoiding her. He didn't come over at night, giving her different reasons and he didn't spend a lot of time with her during the day as well.
Eventually she managed to be alone with him in her apartment and she approached the subject.
"You've been distant."
"No, I've just had a lot of work." Chandler tried to smile at her but failed miserably.
"Come on, Chandler, I know you. What's wrong?" Monica said and took Chandler's hands.
Chandler took a deep breath. "Am I just someone to pass the time with?"
"What?"
"I knew I was punching way above my pay grade when this started, but I was hoping this could go somewhere. I was just an idiot."
"Chandler…" Monica started but the door opened and Joey and Rachel walked in.
"Oh, did we interrupt something? We'll go," Joey said.
"No. You can stay. I'm going to take a walk."
Chandler let go of Monica's hands and walked towards the open door.
"Chandler, wait," Monica called after him.
"Did you let him down easy?" Rachel asked.
"What?"
"Oops," Rachel said, realizing that Monica didn't know what she was talking about.
"Rachel," Monica said sternly.
"Chandler has a crush on you and we tried to help him move on, but he got mad at us. We just didn't want him to get hurt."
Monica starred at her in disbelieve. "You idiots."
"What?" Joey asked.
"Chandler." Monica called as she ran outside and Joey and Rachel followed her. She caught up with Chandler on the floor beneath their floor.
"Chandler," she said and grabbed his arm, pulling him towards her. Chandler turned around and then she grabbed his face.
"Why do you let those idiots mess with your head? Of course this is more than just fooling around."
Monica turned to Joey and Rachel, "Chandler doesn't have a secret and unrequited crush on me." She turned to Chandler, "it's not a secret and it's very much requited," she smiled at him and he smiled back. Monica leaned in and kissed him.
Joey and Rachel looked at them shocked.
Monica pulled back from the kiss and played with Chandler's collar. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm okay," he smiled at her.
"We're really sorry, Chandler," Rachel said.
"Yeah, we're really sorry," Joey said.
"Yeah, yeah, apology accepted," Chandler said, not moving his eyes from Monica. He leaned down and kissed her and when Joey and Rachel saw it's been going on for a while they walked into Chandler and Joey's apartment with their tails between their legs.
Whatever the others said, the most important thing to Chandler was what Monica said and she knew how to calm him down.
