"Hey you." The familiar voice got her looking towards the door.
She felt fine, but the doctors insisted on her spending two nights there just to monitor her and be sure that everything was alright.
There were a bunch of things in that garage that spread through the air once the bomb went off, causing irritation in her throat and the whole respiratory route.
The explosion got her disoriented, and with the fall she hit her head, earning a cut on her forehead and some scraping on her body.
"How are you feeling?"
"They sent you out here? How bad did we mess it up?"
Kim's voice was still raspy and low.
"That's the welcome I get?" Erin walked closer to her friend's bed and grabbed her hand. "As soon as Voight told me I got myself on a plane. The doctor says everything's looking good so far."
Kim took a deep breath and looked at her friend, almost rolling her eyes. "What?"
"Adam?" Talking was a real effort for Kim at the moment and Erin picked that up immediately.
"They didn't tell you anything?" Lindsay's question was answered by Kim's shaking head. "Um, ok. We got Jones and Saldivar. Well, you guys got them." Erin's pause was making her friend nervous. "When the explosion happened, everything went crashing down, causing some metal structures to collapse blocking the exit they were going to use, some shelves fell in them too leaving them stuck there. I guess they didn't think of their plan thoroughly, and that ended up being a good thing for us."
Erin looked around the room to find a chair and sit next to Kim for the next part of what she had to say.
"The not so good part of that is that some of those things fell on Adam as well."
Kim was trying to hold it together and toughen up, but the tears were already puddling in her eyes. The sight before her was breaking Erin's heart.
"The paramedics were able to get him out quickly and bring him here right away. He came in with some fractured bones and internal bleeding that was already stopped by the doctors, but he's in an induced coma. The doctors say that it's only to allow his body to fully rest and benefit his healing process."
"Did you see him?" Although her throat was killing her, the tears rolling down her cheeks were due to the words she had just heard.
"No. Kevin is with him. Halstead, Torres, Upton and now Voight are taking care of the case."
"Can I see him?"
"Kim, the doctor specifically said that you should be in bed rest until they have all your results back."
"Please?"
The once shy tears now looked like waterfalls on Buegess' face.
"Oh honey, please don't cry." Erin sos her beast to hug her without hurting her any further. She needed to comfort her friend in any way possible."I'll see what I can do. Ok? Now I need you to calm down and rest and try to get better so I can get you out of this place and you can go see your guy."
"Ok." The brunette replied softly, trying to hold back her tears.
"I need you to promise me something, though."
"What?"
"Don't chicken out this time. When you see him, you go all the way. Alright?"
"Yeah." She said, nodding and wiping her face with her hand.
"Good. Now, I'm gonna get the nurse and ask her for whatever it is that she can give you to make your throat feel better."
"Thanks Erin."
Kim squeezed her boss' hand and Erin smiled back sweetly.
"Any time, sweetheart."
Kim was torn between her physical and emotional needs. Her body was desperate to shut down and just rest but her heart was beating faster than ever, all she wanted to do was get up from that bed and drag herself to wherever Adam was. She needed to see him, to know that he was ok indeed and that everything was going to be fine.
She finally got it. She knew it was useless to try to stay away from him because a part of him lived in her heart, the thought of him lived in her brain and her soul only felt complete when they were together.
She was done fighting against her feelings.
Sure what happened between them hurt her like nothing before. It made her question everything she knew was true, it made her doubt herself and build walls around her heart. Those walls stood tall and strong up until the moment she saw him again. It only took one look for those to fall crumbling down.
Now, something felt different. It felt like it was their time and the idea of not being with him, of not having him around crushed her soul into a million pieces.
She wasn't doing that. She wasn't ignoring her feelings anymore.
It was late at night, and even though she had managed to sleep some, now her eyes were big and open, shining like quarters in the darkness of her room.
"You can come in." Her voice wasn't one hundred percent normal, but it was slowly coming back as the pain eased a bit.
"I thought you were asleep." Kevin stepped in and started walking closer to her bed. "Feeling any better?"
"I guess." She shrugged. "Any news on Adam?"
"Not yet. But he's going to be ok." He said positively. "You two managed to get those ass holes in jail. You're a pretty sick team." Kevin was trying to be upbeat and he did manage to get a shy smile out of her. "You always were."
"Yeah. Up until we weren't."
"Something tells me you'll be able to get that going again." A deep breath from Kim and a hopeful look on her face made him stop talking briefly. "So, are you ready to break the rules?"
"What?" Kim looked at him puzzled.
"Erin is talking with your nurse, so I can get you to see Adam." Her eyes immediately started to glow, showing Kevin that he was right. It was just a matter of time until they found the way back to each other.
The brunette started to shift on her bed and awkwardly tried to get off it.
"Let me help you."
Kevin held her by her waist as her hand was looped around his neck, steadying herself to start walking.
When they finally reached her room she was tired as hell, but knowing that he was on the other side of that door was the only reward she needed.
"He's sleeping and he's a little bruised." Kim nodded. She didn't care what he looked like, she only wanted to see him. "Go ahead in. I'll be waiting out here just in case."
That was partially true, that was the role he was playing in this plan, but he also wanted to give his friends some privacy.
"Thanks Kev. I really appreciate this."
"Don't mention it, Burg. You know, I'll always have your back."
"I know." She nodded with a soft smile. "And I have yours too."
"I know too." He kissed her forehead and rubbed her back. "Go. Call me if you need anything."
He opened the door for her and waited until she was inside to close it and keep an eye out on the hallway.
Kim wasn't surprised by what she saw. She had been warned about his current state. She was just happy she got to see him.
With difficulty, she reached his bed and was quick to hold his hand with hers and drop a kiss on his forehead.
"Hi, baby." Her fingers were lightly brushing his hair and she was trying really hard for her voice to be heard. Although she had no proof of it, Kim was convinced that he was able to hear everything she was saying.
"I'm sure Kev already told you that the case is finally closed, so congrats partner." She laughed shyly. "You know just how much I wanted to bring these guys down, but now that we've done it, I have this bittersweet feeling, you know? It's amazing that we made it and I'm really happy about that, but I'm kind of bummed that I don't have an excuse to be around you all the time." She took a pause to breathe. "I know what you'd tell me, that we don't need an excuse for that and I know you're right.
I'm sorry Adam. I'm sorry I wasn't brave enough, I'm sorry it's taking all I have not to guard myself up so much, to be more vulnerable and just give in to my feelings." A deep sigh coming from her chest invaded the room. "I love you too, baby. So much. I always have and if this experience taught me anything it is that I always will. You're the love of my life.
And yeah, I'm scared and I have to go back home and I don't know how the hell this could work, but you're right we can try to figure this out, there has to be a way.
All I know is that I don't want to lose you again Adam. I really don't."
Her lips now lightly pressed his, as if like that she was sealing her promise.
Kim stayed there for as long as she could. The last thing she wanted to do was leave, but soon enough the nurses were going to check up on them and she needed to be back in her own room.
Erin opened the door politely and helped her out.
"Thank you both so much. I really needed that."
Kev and Erin were watching Kim attentively as she climbed back on her bed.
"It was fun." Atwater joked. "I'm really happy you're ok."
"Thanks. I am too and I want you two to be ok, so why don't you get some sleep. I saw your little makeshift bed next to Adam's."
"Yeah. I'm spending the night here." He answered.
"I figured. And you can go too Erin. I'm fine."
"I don't want to."
"Well, there's no use for you to be here sleeping on this very uncomfortable couch. Go."
"Yeah, Lindsay. I'm here if she needs anything and I'll let you know if there's any updates." Kevin tried to convince her and after a few more attempts Erin finally agreed.
Sleep came easy to Kim, not only because she was exhausted but also because she felt lighter after saying everything she said to Adam. Now she only needed him to open his eyes so she could say it again.
Just as it was predicted by the doctors, Kim was perfectly fine and she was discharged as soon as her test results were back and everything was cleared. Adam's situation, on the other hand, was not as fast to solve.
It had been almost a week since the explosion and he still had some internal damage and swelling that needed to heal. It wasn't anything major and every specialist who checked him out advised that they expected a full recovery, and that his current state was just part of the process.
They had tried to take him out of the coma, but apparently the levels of pain his body was experiencing triggered some nervous activity that wasn't helpful to his case, so it was decided that it was better to let him sleep for a little longer and slowly reduce his medication to help his body adapt.
Even though she felt fine, she was given medical leave for two days, which she used to practically camp in Adam's hospital room in hopes to be the first to see his eyes open when he woke up.
But sadly that didn't happen.
Instead, Kim had to slowly go back to work. There was a lot of paperwork she still had to take care of in Chicago, and once that was done, both her and Erin needed to take the files back to DC and close the case for good.
Their bosses wanted them back as soon as possible and Erin was doing her best to dilate it as much as she possibly could. Kim wasn't very vocal about it but everyone knew how much she needed to see Adam and talk to him before leaving.
"I'm gonna head out to Med, ok?" Kim told Erin just before grabbing her bag.
They were currently both staying at the place that was assigned to Kim when she got to Chicago.
"Sure. But when you come backā¦" Lindsay couldn't even finish her sentence because her friend did that for her.
"Yes. When I'm back we'll figure out what to tell the chief in regards to our return date." Burgess sighed. "I can't thank you enough for everything you're doing."
"You don't need to thank me Kim, I'm glad I can help. But I'm running out of ideas to buy us more time."
"I know, I know and I'm sorry for putting you in that position. I promise that we'll get this sorted today."
"Ok." Erin could see that despite the conversation they were having, Kim's head was somewhere else completely. "Go."
"Thank you!."
"Yeah, yeah."
The brunette almost sprinted out of her apartment leaving Erin, who was packing some of her things and trying to come up with a plan and a smart response for their boss.
Kim made it to the hospital in record time. Going to see Adam was the highlight of her days, even if for now it just meant watching him sleep and telling him she loved him as she got not reply at all.
Sometimes she felt like this was the Universe getting back at her for those times in which Adam opened up about his feelings and she said nothing back. She even tried to shut him down and prevent him from saying anything further, but he never backed up.
The regret weighing on her shoulders felt so heavy right now. She should have said something when she had the chance but she didn't, and she sure as hell wasn't going to make the same mistake twice.
Kim walked through the hallway greeting the nurses who felt like part of the team by now. Her bright smile and good mood vanished when she opened the door and froze to the sight before her.
"What are you doing here?"
