What was planned out to be a calm and relaxing day for him to slowly get acquainted with real life, ended up being a day full of thinking.
Victoria's confession had caught him totally off guard. He has a feeling there was something off about how things had ended with Kim, but then again, it was not the first time she just disappeared on him like that.
He was pissed at Tori for doing what she did, yet grateful for her coming clean and having some insight to help him understand what was going on.
Now, he was curious to know what that message said and wondered whether or not Kim had tried to reach him again.
Suddenly everything started to make more sense.
He was feeling like shit for thinking that she didn't care about them when he found out that she had gone back to DC. Although there was a chance that the content of the message only reinforced their closure, at least she had contacted him and that was enough to keep him hopeful.
The weekend was pretty quiet for both of them. Kim did nothing but stay at her apartment, she wasn't in the mood for anything.
Her emotions shifted from being sad to being angry constantly, so romcoms and wine was how she decided to spend her days until she had to head back to work.
Adam didn't know what to do, after checking his phone and unblocking her number, he tried calling her but got no answer.
She probably didn't want to know anything about him after he ignored her message, or at least that was the thought on his mind.
Monday came faster than expected, and with it was his first visit to the bullpen. He needed to drop off some medical paperwork and talk to Voight regarding his reinstatement in the unit.
The doctors had cleared him for work, but he was going to have to stick to desk duty for at least a week before his final check up.
"So, how did it go?" Kevin asked, sitting on his chair, while Adam was leaning against the edge of his desk. The team was out on the field and Kevin stayed behind to check some camera footage, so they took advantage of the emptiness of the room to talk a little.
"Fine. Desk duty. But I guess we all knew that." Ruzek shrugged.
"When do you come back?"
"Friday, but Voight said that he was gonna try to push to Monday so that I can get more time to fully recover."
"That's cool."
"Yeah, I don't know man. It sucks being stuck at home thinking all day long."
"About?"
Adam sighed. "Tori came by on Saturday."
"Are you thinking about getting back with her?"
"No. In fact things are permanently finalized with her."
"Oh. Good."
"Yes, I mean. I can't lie to myself anymore. I don't really want to be in a relationship with her." Atwater looked at his friend expectantly. "You know that I really only want to be with Kim."
"So, we can talk about her now?"
The question made Adam chuckle. "We can." His head dropped and he just looked at his shoes for a second. "Sorry for being an annoying asshole."
"It's alright dawg. I'm glad your back to your senses now, though."
"You're not gonna believe this, but Tori helped."
"Say what?" Kevin was shocked.
"Mm hmm. Turns out that she ran into Kim at the hospital and asked her to stay away, telling her that Tori and I were gonna try to get back together or something."
"Dear Lord. That chick's insane."
"Well, it doesn't end there. Apparently Kim texted me and Tori deleted the message and blocked her number."
Kevin's eyes were wide open, he wasn't sure how to react and his first instinct was to chuckle. "Damn man. So Burgess didn't just go MIA on you like you thought she had."
"I guess not."
"I told you something must have happened. She was almost living at the hospital when you were still asleep."
"Yeah, I screwed up. I know."
"You did, but it is not like this never happened before. So I could see where you were coming from." Adam listened to his friend attentively and just let out a long sight. "The thing is, what are you gonna do now that you know what happened?"
"Not sure yet, bro."
"Well, just let me know if you need any help."
"Thanks."
They bumped fists and Adam turned his head to look at the desk that used to be Kim's. It was tidy and empty, but when he paid close attention, he saw the pink pen that she eagerly protected still laying in the pencil holder.
"I'm gonna head home. I'll let you know what I come up with." With a one arm hug Adam said goodbye to his friend and started to walk to the stairs, not before taking Kim's pen with him.
The night was quiet, which was pretty much the opposite of what her day had been like. Apparently DC had missed her because she had a ton of work waiting for her. For the first time in years she was behind on paperwork and was doing her best to catch up with the cases that the rest of their team was currently working ok.
As much as she had enjoyed the hecticness of the day which allowed her to stop thinking about Adam, right now she was glad she was having a moment to herself, to cook, have a glass of wine and just chill.
The buzzing of her phone made her stop stirring the contents of the pot she had on the stove.
She took the device and saw Erin's name flashing on the screen.
"Hey, what's up?"
"Kim. I'm so sorry to bother you with this right now."
"What happened?" Erin sounded stressed which only meant that this phone was probably work related.
"I hate to do this outside working hours, but I just sent a delivery guy with some files that need to be looked over for tomorrow."
"It's ok. It's not like we even do nine to five anyway."
"Sorry."
"No worries. I didn't have anything fun planned, I guess now I do."
Erin chuckled at the irony in her friend's reply. "I guess the files will be there shortly because the guy is on his way."
"Ok. Thanks for the heads up."
"It's the least I could do considering the circumstances. See you tomorrow."
"See you."
Her dinner was almost ready. She turned on the stove and let everything simmer for a second, allowing the flavor to settle in. Kim busied herself in the kitchen, setting the table and picking a bottle of wine appropriate for her meal.
When the doorbell rang it didn't surprise her at all. She pressed the button for the intercom and heard the familiar voice instantly.
"Good evening Ms. Burgess."
"Good evening Edward."
Edward had been the doorman to her building since forever. He was the nicest old man she had ever met.
"There's a delivery for you down here, should I send it up?"
"Yes, please."
"Great. Have a good night."
"You too Edward."
It didn't take long for her to hear the soft knocking on the door. "Coming!" The shout came out as she left everything on the counter and wiped her hands on her jeans before opening.
"Sorry to keep you waiting." Kim apologized once the door was finally open and she was looking for a pen to sign the receipt.
"No worries."
She immediately looked up and gasped to the sight before her.
"What the fuck?" The soft whisper escaped her lips.
"That wasn't the reaction I was expecting." He replied nervously but doing his best to look confident.
"I… I just don't really understand what's going on right now." Her nervousness matched his.
"Well… I had to stop by the district today and I found this." He pulled out her pink pen from his pocket, making Kim absentmindedly bite her lower lip. "And considering how much you took care of it while you were working with us, I figured you were probably having a terrible time here without your marvelous pen."
Kim took the pen out of his hand and stared into his eyes for a moment. "So, you came all the way to DC to give me my pen back?"
"Yes. That and the hope of getting a chance to talk to you." Adam confessed. "It doesn't have to be right now. I mean I know it's a bit late and you're probably busy."
His words came out fast, as if that would make her potential rejection hurt a little less.
Kim stepped aside making way for him to walk right in.
"You can come."
He did exactly as she said before she closed the door behind them.
"I'm not that busy, I was just about to eat dinner. Are you hungry?"
Adam tilted his head, honestly he was a bit surprised to be welcomed with such warmth and softness.
"A little, yeah."
"Wanna join me?"
"Yes." He pulled out his phone, which utterly confused Kim. "But first, tell me where is the closest place where I can get us something to drink or something. I don't want to come here empty handed and on top of that eat your food."
Kim couldn't help but laugh at what he had just said. "You didn't come empty handed, you brought me my pen back. Besides, I have everything ready, even the wine picked out." She made a brief pause. "Dinner's on me tonight."
"Ok. I'm buying next time, then."
His comment made her smile. Was he implying that he wanted to see her again? Then why did he actively ignore her attempts at contacting him?
She guided him to the kitchen in awkward silence because she wasn't really sure what to say.
"I'm sorry I just showed up. I tried calling you but you never answered." Adam finally broke the ice, after sitting on one of the stools that surrounded the island in the middle of her kitchen.
"Oh, yeah. I kind of deleted your contact after realizing you had blocked me." She said naturally while she brought another placemat and plate and neatly arranged it in front of Adam. "I know it might have felt like I just left again, but this time it was totally different Adam, it really was; and having you ignore my message and then just block me sucked. I can understand that you were pissed at me and all, but you could have said something. If you ask me, I think it was a really immature move." She blurted everything out.
"It was without a doubt an immature way to handle things, and that's exactly why I am here."
Kim brought the glasses and wine over and took a seat. Her stomach had closed and she'd much rather have this conversation than eat dinner. They could do that later.
"Recently many things have been brought to my attention that I wasn't aware of. Things that happened while I was at the hospital."
The brunette looked down, her cheeks blushing. She wa sure Keven or Jay must have mentioned her parading around Med while he was there.
"First of all, thank you for worrying about me and just being there."
"No problem."
"Tori told me you both had a conversation." He continued and she felt like she was about to hurl at the mention of Victoria's name.
"I guess you can say that."
"I know what she said to you and I think that's what motivated you to leave." When Kim avoided his eyes he knew he had hit the nail on the head. "Kim, there was nothing going on with Tori at that moment and nothing is going on with her now. As soon as I was discharged she came by my place and I ended everything. I can't be with her."
"Why?"
"Isn't it obvious? I can't be with her or anyone because I'm in love with you."
"And why did you ignore my message and blocked me?"
"I didn't do that." He took a deep breath. "For some reason Tori had access to my phone, she saw your message, deleted it and blocked you. I had no idea you had tried to reach me until Saturday when Tori came clean about everything, and in the meantime the only thing I knew was that you were back here after having the closure you needed."
"That was bullshit. I didn't need closure, well maybe I did but it's not what I wanted."
"What do you want, Kim?"
She walked until she was standing in front of him, her hands cradled his cheeks and without any further ado she just leant forward and kissed him.
"You. I want to be with you."
