Chapter 3
Lunch time soon rolled around and Sam led Robin to the commissary to meet Teal'c. Sam spied Teal'c sitting at the table with a tray full of food. She grabbed her lunch with Robin in tow and went to the Jaffa. Sam sat down as did Robin.
"Teal'c," She smiled in greeting.
The Jaffa gazed upon Sam and her friend, someone he had not seen before.
Sam cheered, "I want you to meet my good friend, Robin. We went to the Academy together. She's going to be working under me here in the S.G.C."
Robin was debriefed prior and looked forward to meeting an actual alien from another planet. She met many wizards, witches and come across all sorts of different creatures but never met a being from another planet before. She grew excited. "It's my pleasure to meet you, Teal'c." she greeted him.
"As you," he simply gave a nod and went back to eating his large lunch. He said little and kept his thoughts to himself.
The moment became rather awkward for Robin. She wanted ask Teal'c all sorts of questions but could tell he didn't wish to be bothered. She focused on her lunch. She mentioned, "I can help you with that ion shield proposal, Sam."
Sam countered, "Actually I want you to help with the astronomy report and map out gravitational lines."
Robin agreed, "I can do that."
"I know you can. You were able to predict earthquakes in the Academy. I want you to apply that technique to known star charts." Sam suggested.
Robin pondered, "The technique I used for earth quakes was to over lap astrology charts with astronomy charts and draw the gravitational lines. How do I do that for star charts?"
Sam smirked, "I'm sure you will figure something out. Daniel knows both astronomy and astrology. I'm sure you can snag him to help too."
"That's an idea." she nodded in agreement. She glanced at Teal'c who seemed to listen to their conversation but said nothing.
Teal'c then spotted something move onto the table. It looked much like a frog covered in slick mud. He quickly snatched it figuring the frog must have hopped into the facility. Upon opening his hand the frog turned out to be made of chocolate and did not move. He sat puzzled.
Robin gasped, "My chocolate frog." She grabbed the treat and tried to place it back in the box. She brought it in for a snack and didn't expect it hop out of her pocket.
Sam asked, "You still eat that weird candy?" She also knew Robin was not supposed to bring candy into the facility.
Robin stuffed the stiff frog back into the package and closed it. Teal'c sat baffled for he thought the frog was moving and hopping about like an actual live animal and yet it simply turned into chocolate in his hand.
Teal'c stated, "The frog moved."
Sam insisted, "It's just chocolate, Teal'c. I've eaten one, it's just candy." She then scolded her friend, "You are not supposed to bring candy on base."
"I forgot to leave it." she explained.
"It hopped." Teal'c insisted.
Sam assured, "It's just an illusion. She used to use the chocolate frogs in magic tricks."
"They only move a little." Robin assured.
Teal'c was certain that he saw the frog hop. It baffled him. He looked up and spied Jack and Daniel enter the commissary next. He debated if he should report what he saw. Soon his friends had taken a seat at the table upon gathering their lunches. The Jaffa sat pondering if he was simply seeing things.
Jack understood the look and asked, "Everything alright, T?" He then glanced at Robin wondering if perhaps she pulled a magic trick or if perhaps she was an actual witch.
"I am well." he declared and shook the nonsense from his mind. He continued to eat.
Jack settled down for lunch. As he started to eat he asked, "So…what was this special school you went to, Hood? Hogwarts. What did ya learn there?"
"Astronomy, astrology, herbs and minerals." she stated.
Daniel casually asked, "What was the school like? Did you have dorms and houses?" He wondered if she could confirm the information in the diary.
She nodded, "Yes! I belonged to Huffelpuff. Our colors were gold and black and our traits were: trustworthy, loyal and strong work ethic. I was the on the Quidditch team. I played all positions by the time I left."
Jack wondered, "What is quidditch?"
"Complicated." she smirked.
Daniel wondered, "How many years did you attend?"
"Six years." she informed. "Went to the Academy after graduating."
He asked, "First in your class?"
Robin laughed slightly, "Heck no! I was in the middle…maybe a little towards the end."
Daniel pressed, "What did the school look like?"
Sam found the question odd and sounded like an interrogation to her. She squinted wondering why Daniel was asking such a silly question.
"It was an old castle that converted into a school." Robin explained. "Looked like an old castle."
Sam became defensive, "What is this? Why are you asking Robin about Hogwarts?"
"Just sounds like an interesting school." he excused. Robin's description matched perfectly to the description written down in the old diary. He now wondered if it was indeed a school of magic.
Next Day
Sam was up early as usual and stopped by the infirmary to gather Janet Frasier for breakfast. She stepped in the door of the office and spied the doctor at her desk going over a report. "Morning Janet!" she called.
Janet looked up from the report for she knew it was time for breakfast. She stated as she rose to her feet, "Morning Sam! I got the test results back for Robin. She has the Ancient gene too."
Sam replied a bit stunned, "Really! She has the gene too?"
"She does," she nodded. "I guess the Colonel is not the only one on base with the gene. Robin does seem more cautious than the Colonel so that's a plus."
Sam had to agree, "I doubt Robin would be touching things she shouldn't and activating things by accident."
"I will debrief Hammond on the results. Robin can be an asset. She can help you research the technology, activate and control it better. I know having things go on unexpectedly when the Colonel enters the lab can be a hassle." Janet figured.
"You have no idea," Sam agreed wagging her head. They entered the hallway and started toward the commissary. They soon came across Teal'c standing in the hallway with his hands cupped around an object. He looked rather concerned. Sam asked, "Everything okay, Teal'c?"
He gave a curious look and held his hands before Sam. He opened his hands to find the chocolate frog sitting in the palm of his hand motionless.
Sam stated, "It's candy, Teal'c."
"It moved." he declared.
"It's just candy for a magic trick. It's just an illusion." she assured him. "I've seen the chocolate frog trick. Yes, it looks like it moves but it's just chocolate."
"It was hopping in the hall." he stated.
Sam tried to not laugh as she explained, "Robin probably put it there as a trick. It's just candy." Sam grabbed the frog and broke a piece of it off. She showed him it was simply chocolate. "See, it's candy. It's an illusion." She placed it back in his hand and assured, "Robin set up a magic trick for you. It's just a trick." Sam assumed Robin had intentionally left the frog to do a trick on Teal'c when in fact the frog has escaped the package.
Teal'c insisted, "It was moving."
"It's an illusion," she shook her head. "You can eat it if you want." She then stated, "I'll see you at breakfast, Teal'c." She then stepped by him with Janet in tow.
"Chocolate frogs that move?" Janet asked.
"Magic trick that Robin would pull off in the Academy. I remember my friend Cam finding one. I don't know how she does the trick but it looks like it's moving like a real frog until you pick it up. It's candy. You can eat it. Not the best tasting candy but it's just candy." Sam explained.
"How does she pull off that illusion?" Janet wondered.
Sam shrugged, "She's good!"
Later That Day
Robin was asked to come to the briefing room. Upon arrival she found SG-1 sitting at the table with General Hammond and Dr. Frasier. She came to a halt at the doorway and asked, "You wanted to see me, sirs?"
General Hammond stated, "Have a seat, Major."
Robin took a seat near Sam at the table. She glanced about and wondered what the meeting was about.
Janet began, "I have the test results for the DNA test that we gave you. You have what is called the 'Ancient gene'. Colonel O'Neill also has the gene. It allows you to activate the Ancient technology that we find off world."
Robin sat in thought. "I have the gene that activate Ancient technology."
"That's correct." Janet confirmed. "It's a rare gene. Only you and Colonel have it in the whole base. We are looking for other members of the military who have the gene. It's a slow process."
"I see," she slowly nodded as she understood.
Sam smiled, "This means you will not only be working directly with me in my lab but also going off world with SG-1."
"Off world?" she asked surprised. She figured it would be some time before she would be assigned to a team. "I haven't had any off world training."
Jack assured her, "Neither have I."
Daniel added, "And you would be less likely to touch things you shouldn't." He then gave Jack a displeased look.
"It was an accident." Jack rebutted.
Robin looked about the table and noticed Teal'c didn't seem to paying much attention. Before him on the table sat her broken chocolate frog. It had not moved since Sam broke it, thus breaking the enchantment. She cocked her head, "You found my candy."
"It was in the hall." Teal'c told her as he debated if the frog was moving or not earlier.
Sam explained, "Teal'c found your chocolate frog trick. I broke it to show him it was just candy and not a real frog."
General Hammond asked, "Chocolate frog trick?"
Sam explained, "Robin does magic tricks, sir. She's a magician. She has a trick where a chocolate frog moves like a real frog but it's just candy. Teal'c found it in the hallway."
Jack stated, "Let's see that!"
Hammond looked at Robin, "You are a magician?"
She nodded, "I can do tricks. I promise I will not do tricks while working, sir." She feared the tricks could get her in trouble.
Hammond gave a small smile, "I like magic tricks. Let's see one, Major."
"Um," she gulped.
Jack suggested, "Let's see the magic chocolate frog." He then grabbed the broken frog from before Teal'c and placed it before Robin.
Robin knew she could repair the frog and get hopping again. She found a paper napkin on the table and placed it over the frog. She placed both hands over the chocolate and then said the magic word. "Reparo!" With show and flare she removed the napkin and the frog was in one piece again. It then hopped before all to see across the table. It stopped before Teal'c.
The Jaffa reached for the frog and picked it up. It then turned to chocolate once more. He held it high and looked for any indication of manipulation but found none.
Janet cheered, "Cassie would love that trick. Do you do kids' birthday parties?"
"Not normally," she confessed. "Usually bars and drinking parties."
Hammond was impressed, "I don't know how you did that but I have two little granddaughters would love to see that trick."
Sam suggested, "You can do birthday parties like your dad did."
"He still does birthday parties." she informed. "He's way more entertaining than me and better at it. You want my dad to do the parties, not me. I'm not really a kid's party person."
Teal'c put the candy back down and it started to hop again. He picked it up and it stopped.
Robin informed him, "You have to break the candy to break the charm. It only pauses when you pick it up."
Daniel rubbed his chin but said nothing as he thought about the terms used and the magic cast before him. He didn't think it was a magic trick but possibly actual magic. He knew there had to be something scientific behind magic and the mythology.
Jack stated, "So if he breaks the frog it stops moving?"
She nodded, "Breaking it stops the trick."
"Neat," Jack grinned, "Don't break it, T. Let it hop around."
Janet doubted it was an illusion. She simply stated, "That's a hell of a trick you got there, Major."
"It's actually pretty basic." she replied.
Jack asked, "So! You do you got a magic wand?"
She nodded, "I do."
"Did you bring it?" he wondered.
"I left it in my car." she mentioned.
"Well…go get it." he told her.
