Petra Ral wiped the sweat from her brow as she stood atop the Wall, gazing out at the horizon beyond Paradis Island. The constant battle against the Titans had worn down her body, but her spirit remained unbroken. Next to her, Oluo Bozado leaned casually on the stone ledge, his usual smug smirk on his face as he looked out into the distance.
"You know, Petra," Oluo began, running a hand through his messy hair, "I'm probably the best soldier in all of humanity. But even the best need a break."
Petra rolled her eyes, familiar with Oluo's grand declarations. "Is that so? And where exactly would you take this break?"
"Well, maybe the world has more to offer than what we see," Oluo replied, an almost wistful tone creeping into his voice.
Suddenly, before Petra could reply, a strange light flickered in the sky. It wasn't the usual ominous glow that heralded the appearance of a Titan. No, this light was gentle, ethereal even, as it spiraled toward the ground. In a split second, the glow engulfed Petra and Oluo, pulling them off the Wall in a blinding flash.
When Petra opened her eyes, the world was… different. The heavy, oppressive air of Paradis was gone, replaced by a lush forest that felt oddly serene. The trees were tall and vibrant, their leaves shimmering in the soft sunlight that filtered through the branches.
"What… where are we?" Petra asked, scrambling to her feet and scanning the area.
Oluo was already standing, brushing dirt off his uniform, looking strangely calm. "Huh, doesn't look like home, but it sure beats fighting Titans. Maybe this is my break."
Petra shot him a look of exasperation. "This isn't the time for jokes, Oluo. We need to figure out where we are and how to get back."
Oluo, however, seemed unfazed. "Why go back? Look at this place—no Titans, no constant threat of death. Just peace. I could get used to this."
Before Petra could argue, a voice interrupted them.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?"
They turned to see a young woman standing before them, her black hair falling over her shoulders and her pale skin practically glowing in the sunlight. She was dressed in an unfamiliar style, with a blue and yellow dress, the likes of which neither Petra nor Oluo had ever seen before.
"My name is Snow White," she continued, her tone both curious and wary. "I don't think you're from around here."
Petra blinked in disbelief. Snow White? The name sounded like something out of a children's tale, but everything about this place already felt surreal.
Oluo, however, seemed to snap out of his usual bravado, glancing between Snow White and the peaceful landscape surrounding them. "No, we're definitely not from here. But, you know, I wouldn't mind staying." His voice was calm but firm, a strange sincerity in his tone.
"What?!" Petra turned to Oluo, incredulous. "You can't be serious. We have a duty back home— Captain Levi, the squad, our comrades are depending on us!"
Oluo shook his head, his expression more serious than she'd ever seen it. "Petra, look around. No Titans. No fighting. No endless walls to guard. Believe me, this seems like a much better world than what we had back there."
Snow White watched the exchange in silence, her brow furrowing in confusion, but she sensed there was something deeper going on here than she understood. "I don't know where you came from, but if you're lost, I can help you find shelter with my friends. They won't mind if you stay for a while."
Petra opened her mouth to protest, but Oluo cut her off. "I'm staying, Petra. For once, I want to live without the constant fear of dying. Maybe I'm not the best soldier like I always say, but I know what I want—and it's not going back to that nightmare."
Petra looked at him, a mixture of frustration and concern washing over her. This wasn't the Oluo she knew. He was confident, sure, but he'd never struck her as the type to give up on his responsibilities, or the people he cared about.
"You can't just abandon everything," she said, her voice soft but urgent. "We have to find a way back."
Oluo sighed and ran a hand through his hair again. "Petra, maybe this is fate. Maybe we're meant to stay here. Think about it—no more risking our lives every day. No more loss. Just... living."
Petra clenched her fists, torn between her sense of duty and the strange allure of this world. Snow White watched them both, a gentle smile forming on her lips.
"You're welcome to stay as long as you need," she said, gesturing to the path that led deeper into the forest. "My friends will be happy to meet you."
Oluo smiled, more genuinely than Petra had ever seen. "Thanks. I think I'll take you up on that offer."
As the three of them began to walk into the forest, Petra couldn't help but feel a sinking feeling in her chest. This world may have been peaceful, but it wasn't theirs. How could they just give up on everything they had fought for?
But as she glanced at Oluo, who was finally at ease, for the first time without a cocky grin plastered on his face, she realized that maybe, just maybe, this world was offering something they all desperately needed: a second chance.
