A month passed, and the final task had arrived. Derek, and all the students, except the champions, have taken their end-of-year exams. Derek decided to prepare himself for the task. He collected his Nimbus 2001, and he was able to get a pair of goggles to fight against the wind that would likely blow while he was in the air.
Everyone was gathering at the Quidditch pitch. The champions met up with the judges and Derek arrived shortly afterwards.
'The time has come…to find out who or what is going to attack me this time.' He thought.
'At least this time you are prepared for anything.' Plutonia said.
"Sonorus!" Bagman's voice rang out. "Welcome to the Third Task. Today, Moody has placed the Triwizard Cup within the maze. The champions are to navigate the maze to find the cup, and whoever touches it will be the winner. Mr. Potter and Mr. Diggory are tied in first position, and they will enter the maze first. Followed by Mr. Krum, and Ms. Delacour." He announced.
As the spectators cheered, the champions entered the field. Derek kicked off into the sky.
"Whoa….those are huge hedges." Derek whispered.
"In the sky, Derek will be keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. He will also be the one to retrieve anyone who wishes to be withdrawn from the task by casting red sparks into the sky. Other than that, good luck Three…two…one…BEGIN!" Bagman shouted.
Derek watched as the champions began to enter the maze, Harry, and Cedric together, followed by Krum, and Fleur going in last. He began to do laps around the perimeter of the maze. He saw a lot of creatures within, but what really stood out to him was a sphinx that was near the Triwizard Cup.
'Whoa…that sphinx is beautiful.' Derek thought.
'Apparently, these creatures are known for their riddles. Best steer clear of them, unless you want your skills to be put to the dangerous test.' Plutonia said.
During his flight around, Derek saw the champions going around the maze. Harry was constantly running, Cedric was a bit cautious, Krum seemed rather calm, but Fleur seemed to be in a panic. He was about to find out more, but something seemed off.
"STUPEFY!" Krum shouted while aiming his wand at Derek.
A flash of red light shot right at him. Derek saw it almost too late, and he was able to dodge it.
"WHOA! HEY!" He shouted while readying his wand, and his eyes glowed.
'Derek, retreat! Don't get involved in that fight!' Plutonia told him.
Derek growled a bit before he flew back towards the judges.
"Krum! He fired that spell at me! That wasn't to send out red sparks!" He said to them. Just then, a loud shriek was heard back in the maze. "Oh great, now what?" He asked.
"Go check it out!" Fudge said.
He nodded and investigated. He then saw Fleur on the ground. Rushing towards her were Harry and Cedric. He swooped down and joined them.
"What the hell happened!?" Cedric asked.
"Looks like she was hexed. Either that, something or someone attacked her." Derek said while they checked on her. "I think she's not able to continue. Watch out for Krum. Something's off about him." He said while they got her onto his broomstick.
"You think he attacked her?" Harry asked.
"Dunno, but he tried to attack me." Derek said.
"Good luck." Cedric said.
"Same." He said before he kicked off and took Fleur away. He landed by the judges and Maxine rushed to them. "She's unconscious, but she seems okay." He said.
"Keep going." Dumbledore said.
He nodded and returned to his flight. He continued to spectate things from above, keeping an eye on every movement he could.
"CRUCIO!" Krum's voice shouted nearby.
"Huh? What the?" He asked while looking and he was watching Krum using a curse on Cedric, who was howling in pain and thrashing about on the ground like he was being tortured. "HEY!" He shouted angrily before removing his goggles, firing off a blast of purple light at Krum from his eyes.
Krum saw the impact nearby and faced Derek. He screamed and fired a jet of red light at Derek. Derek fired a Prismatic Pulse at the attack, and they connected.
Meanwhile, Cedric recovered and saw what was happening. An explosion blasted from the chain reaction of the two spells. This made them all shoot back. Krum was knocked out, Harry and Cedric landed side by side after colliding from a hedge, and Derek was trying to stay balanced from the sky.
Derek zoomed down and landed by them.
"No, wait! Don't! He might still be dangerous!" Cedric yelled while shaking.
"We'll deal with him. Cedric, are you okay?" Derek asked.
"I will be. The Cruciatus Curse, one of the three Unforgivable Curses." He said.
Derek looked back at Krum.
"Something isn't right here. He would never do this unless he was bewitched. I'll take him from here." He said before going to him and grabbing him.
He took off while carrying Krum. The spectators were talking all around when they saw Derek taking him to the judges.
"What happened?" Karkaroff asked in a demanding voice.
After Derek set him down, he explained to them all about what went down. He brought up the torture he did to Cedric but believed he was bewitched and wouldn't have done this otherwise.
After a while, he returned to flying once again. This time, he saw both Harry and Cedric fighting a large Acromantula near the Triwizard Cup. The giant spider was fighting back, only to be sent flying when Harry hit with the Disarming Charm. After they defeated it, he noticed that none of them were going for the cup right away due to an injury to Harry's leg and Cedric being unsure about the circumstances.
'What are they doing?' Derek thought while he continued to watch them. After a bit of debate, they decided to both take it. "IT'S A TIE!" He shouted. Just as they touched it, they both vanished. "WHAT!?" He shouted once again while he was looking around.
"DEREK!" Dumbledore shouted to him. He flew right to him. "What happened?" He asked.
"They're gone! Harry and Cedric. The moment they touched the cup, they disappeared. I can't see them anywhere around the pitch. It's like they are no longer on the Grounds." He said.
"Fly around the castle if you need to. We need to know where they went to." Fudge said.
"Got it." He said before he flew off towards the castle. While surveying the areas outside Hogwarts, he was beginning to panic. 'Why did I not see this coming?' He wondered.
'None of us did. How were we supposed to know that the cup was a Portkey?' Plutonia asked.
After a while, he returned to the judges, and the headmasters/headmistress.
"Anything?" Dumbledore asked.
"No. They are nowhere to be seen." He said when he removed his goggles.
Meanwhile, with Harry and Cedric, they were at a graveyard at an unknown location to them. Harry was on the ground holding his scar that was hurting him intensely. Cedric with his wand raised, glared at Wormtail, who was holding a robe that was wrapped around bundled around something…or someone.
"Kill the spare!" A cold, sinister voice yelled to Wormtail.
"Avada Kedavra!" Wormtail yelled while aiming his wand at Cedric.
A flash of green light blasted out of it and hit Cedric. He was sent flying, and he went limb right by Harry. Harry saw his lifeless body with his last expression of surprise etched on his face.
Back with Derek, he began to feel very strange from within. He gasped loudly as his eyes glowed brightly. He then screamed while holding his head. As he did this, his magic blasted out of his body, and amethyst-colored electricity shot out of his eyes.
"DEREK!?" Dumbledore shouted as a widespread panic began all around while Derek's magic was going out of control.
Derek felt himself slipping away and Plutonia began to take over. Plutonia's spiritual self now surrounded Derek's body as she took over completely. She looked upwards.
"What the devil is going on here!?" Fudge demanded.
"Derek? What are…?" Dumbledore asked.
"Derek isn't here right now!" Plutonia spoke. As she spoke, Derek's voice was speaking in unison. She then took the broomstick and kicked off the ground. "I must delay his return!" She yelled just as she got to the top of the stand.
She landed on top of the stand and aimed away from the castle. Their eyes began to channel more magic and she had her hands by her head.
"PRISM SHOT!" Plutonia screamed as she fired off a barrage of magic into the sky. After she fired them, she charged up a ball of magic that grew much larger than the others. "IMPACT!" She screamed again and she fired it.
After firing it, she quickly returned to Derek's subconscious, and he was back in control. His eyes were shut and were smoking a bit from the attack. He couldn't open them due to his eyes burning.
'YOU COULD'VE WARN ME WHEN YOU DID THAT!' Derek thought to her with rage.
'My most sincerest apologies. I sensed a very powerful dark wizard rising to power again. What I did was hope to delay it.' Plutonia said as if she was exhausted.
'Voldemort!?' He asked just as other professors arrived to retrieve him.
"Derek! What happened?" Flitwick asked.
"VOLDEMORT!" He shouted while opening his eyes, only to close them again as the burning worsened.
"Get some medics!" Sprout called out.
After a bit, Madam Pomfrey and a few other nurses came to his aid. Pomfrey gently put a cool cloth around his eyes. Upon contact, the cooling and the burning combination didn't do wonders for Derek as it hurt him, making him scream in the process.
Back with Harry at the graveyard, he was dueling against Voldemort himself. The human, snake abomination had his followers, the Death Eaters, behind him. Harry and Voldemort had their spells connected. By Harry were a handful of spirits, two of them were his parents James and Lily Potter. Another was Cedric and close by was an old war veteran muggle glaring at the enemies, and a woman that worked in the ministry. All around them was a dome-like cage of golden light that trapped the duelist within.
"We can linger for a moment to give you some time. You need to get to the Portkey. Do you understand?" James asked his son.
"Yes, dad!" Harry yelled.
"Harry, take my body back, will you? Take my body back to my parents." Cedric's spirit said to him.
"DO IT NOW!" James shouted.
Harry pulled his wand upwards and the connection broke, and the golden dome of light faded away. The spirits closed in on Voldemort and his Death Eaters, blinding them. As Harry stunned and fought his way around them, he heard the air above them rumble as if a massive storm was approaching.
They all looked up and saw purple lights filling the sky and they were crashing down onto the Death Eaters. Explosions impacted onto them, and they were sent flying. The massive light was hurling straight towards Voldemort. He screamed as he shot powerful dark magic onto it, stopping it and fighting it off.
Harry saw this as the ultimate distraction and grabbed Cedric's wrist.
"ACCIO!" He shouted and the Triwizard Cup shot right towards him. He caught it and they vanished.
"NO!" Voldemort screamed knowing that Harry had escaped.
Back at the stands, Derek was helped down by professors and Madam Pomfrey. Just as they reached the ground, Harry and Cedric appeared and landed by them. The stadium exploded in cheers when they returned, but those who were nearby them knew otherwise.
"Harry!" Dumbledore yelled when they went to him.
"HE'S BACK! VOLDEMORT'S BACK!" Harry screamed as tears were pouring out of his eyes and his scar was still hurting him.
'Derek! Let me take over! I might be able to save him!' Plutonia almost demanded.
'How? By the looks of it, he's dead! What can you-?' 'Trust me!' Plutonia interrupted him.
'…okay.' Derek thought before allowing her to take over.
Derek's body glowed and Plutonia's spirit surrounded him once again. Those who had him immediately released him.
"Stand aside." Plutonia said while going to Cedric's body.
It took some doing, but Dumbledore pulled Harry off of him. Plutonia knelt to him and pulled his shirt up, revealing his wounded torso. She began to speak in a chant while pulling the cloth out of Derek's eyes, which were glowing. She fired a beam of light onto the chest and created several insignias. She then placed both hands onto the center, slowly turned them counterclockwise, and spoke out loud.
'Lingering soul that still roams free
Return to the body which costs that fee
A decade long you must endure
Save this soul and you shall be cured!'
Cedric's body glowed and the echo of Cedric's last moment from the graveyard returned to the body. The insignias disappeared and Plutonia returned to Derek's subconscious, making Derek weaker and his eyes hurt all the more. Derek pulled the cloth back over his eyes.
Cedric gasped and shot himself back upwards.
"HARRY! Wait…what? What happened? We're back?" He asked, so confused.
"Cedric! You're back!" Cho's voice yelled out as she rushed to him and hugged him.
"Son!" Amos Diggory yelled happily while joining them.
As cheers began to explode around them, Derek felt himself being pulled up.
"Come on. I'll take you from here." It was Moody's voice.
Before Derek could answer, he was being dragged away from the scene. Even with his eyes still burning a bit and blindfolded, he can still see around him.
"Where are we going? Hospital wing?" Derek asked him.
"Yes." Moody said.
After a while, he felt himself stop being dragged and was standing in a room. He went towards a wall and leaned on it.
"Wait a minute…this isn't the hospital wing." He said while feeling around. Just then, he looked towards Moody, who had his wand raised at him. "What the!?" He yelled.
"Stupefy!" Moody yelled.
"Yikes!" He shrieked and dodged from the flash of red light being shot at him. He then pulled out his wand. "Immobulus!" He yelled.
A flash of blue light shot out of his wand and hit Moody, freezing him in his place.
"STUPEFY!" Another voice boomed and the door blasted open.
The spell hit Moody and he laid down on the ground. Dumbledore, wand raised, was the first to enter, followed by Flitwick, McGonagall, and Snape. McGonagall reached out to Derek, which he grabbed.
"Night, are you okay?" She asked.
"Yeah." He said.
Throughout the commotion, Snape went to fetch a Truth Potion while Flitwick went to go and open a large chest in the room. Dumbledore looked inside and saw someone that looked like the Moody on the floor, but weaker, balder, starved and sleeping.
"That isn't the real Mad-Eye Moody. The real Moody wouldn't have left the area with Derek like that. In fact…" Dumbledore said before retrieving a hip flask from the fake Moody and poured it, revealing muddy, and gooey substance. "Polyjuice Potion. Quite ingenious. Fillius, will you please go and fetch Juan Shafiq. He would need to see this." He continued more.
"At once." He said before he rushed out.
Suddenly, the fake Moody began to change in front of them all. The scars faded, a wooden leg that he was using fell off and a new one grew in its place. The magical eye he had fell out and a new one appeared in its place. He also gotten younger, and a new man appeared. The potion's effect wore off.
"So glad that I didn't see like you all do. But the sound of it…sickening." Derek said.
"You don't know the half of it." McGonagall said.
Just then, Snape arrived with Winky, and Flitwick arrived with Juan.
"Derek! Are you okay!?" Juan asked while going to him.
"I think so." He said.
"Barty Crouch Jr." Juan said while they all looked at him.
"Master Barty!" Winky yelled while going to him and hugged him.
"Winky, away from him. I'll wake him up." Dumbledore said before she got off of him, and Snape made him swallow a few drops of the Truth Potion. "Ennervate!" He yelled while aiming his wand at him.
Crouch Jr. woke up and saw several wands at him. He chuckled at them and looked right at Derek.
"That's a good look on you, boy. Never had I thought someone like you would be within us all. My master will want to meet you someday." Crouch Jr. said.
"Why target him?" Dumbledore asked.
"He was gonna ruin our master plan. Harry was supposed to win and end up in that graveyard. And as you can see…" He said while showing a tattoo on his arm that resembled a skull with a snake slithering in and out of it, called the Dark Mark. "The plan worked." He finished.
"It was you! You're the one that put Harry's name in the Goblet of Fire! You're the one that made that Swedish Short Snout try to burn me alive, make the giant squid try to eat me, and you bewitched Krum to torture Cedric, and attack me! Didn't you!?" Derek asked angrily.
"You catch on fast. You bringing Diggory back to life will not do wonders for his plan going onward. But nevertheless, I'll still be welcomed back to his ranks!" Crouch Jr. yelled with a bigger smile.
"Minerva, take him to the Hospital Wing. The rest of you with me to interrogate." Dumbledore said.
"Come along now." She said while taking Derek away.
They hurried their way throughout the corridors until they reached the wing. There, Harry and Cedric were lying in their beds with the Diggory's and Cho by Cedric, while Sirius, and a few others that reminded him of Ron sat by him. Ron and Hermione were also there right by Harry's side with Hermione holding his arm and leaning on him.
"Derek! You're alright!" Ron cried out happily.
"Is there nothing your eyes can't do?" Hermione asked him.
"Honestly, I'm just as curious as you." Derek said while he was helped onto a bed.
"Here, drink this. A little tonic for the nerves." Pomfrey said while going to him and placed a cup of Wiggenweld Potion by his side.
McGonagall gave him the cup and Derek drank it down. The effect spread fast as he felt his eyes start to burn less.
"Get some rest. We'll discuss more in the morning." McGonagall suggested.
Derek simply nodded and he just laid down on his bed. He began to rest and could breathe a sigh of relief knowing everything was going to be okay.
Or…so he thought.
About an hour later, Derek was awoken by voices all around loudly. He opened his eyes, which were still blindfolded, and he used his magic and he saw Dumbledore, Snape, Fudge, Crouch, and Juan in the hospital wing as well.
"You-Know-Who…returned!? Preposterous!" Fudge yelled angrily.
"Minister, you know that Harry and Cedric are witnesses to his return. My son confessed to his actions and was following his orders." Crouch said.
"Do not make me kick you out of the ministry, especially with sending your own son to Azkaban many years ago and breaking him out. In fact, had he stayed in there, things might've been different." Fudge retaliated.
"Paranoia." Derek said, startling everyone there when he spoke out and he slowly sat up. "I'm sensing nothing but paranoia coming from you, minster." He said while facing him.
"Mr. Night, please. Don't get too involved with this. You've been through too much." Dumbledore said.
"He's right. You've done enough." Juan said.
"I should mention that you also spread chaos here at Hogwarts recently, Derek. Care to explain that?" Fudge asked him.
"She did this. She sensed Voldemort's return and hoped to delay it. She failed, but she saved Cedric's life to add as a witness." He spoke.
"'She?' If you are referring to whatever happened with those balls of flames that were shot into the sky, and bringing back Diggory's life, that's nonsense." Fudge said.
"Maybe. Although…would you like to speak to her?" Derek offered.
The whole room fell silent from the question. Even Dumbledore was confused about what was going on.
"She can do that?" Juan asked.
"She took over a few times in my life, so why not?" He asked.
"Very well. Let us meet 'her.'" Fudge said with a mocking smile.
Derek's body exploded with a magical aura, and he fell unconscious. An amethyst ball of flames popped out of him and took on the form of a spiritual woman. Plutonia appeared while slowly standing upwards. She wore a long, sleeveless dress with a belt satchel around her torso. She was barefoot and her long flowing hair blown towards her, like a gentle breeze on a hilltop. She had her hair in a braid in the front to keep her hair off of her face. Her spirit was connected by a magical ether line that was coming out of Derek's head.
She shot her eyes open, and they were glowing brightly. Everyone was shocked to see the spirit in front of them.
"Dear lady…Derek, how are you doing this?" Dumbledore asked.
"Derek is out cold right now. My name is Plutonia Emerald, Derek's ancestor, and the one who he inherited his magical eyes from." Plutonia said.
"Are you a ghost?" Harry asked.
"In a way, yes, Harry Potter. I'm a soul that was brought back to earth as a conscious within Derek. A fallen, and a guardian angel to him. You may refer to me as a Spirit Flame." She answered.
"So, he managed to create a spirit, what's the point?" Fudge asked with a slight chuckle.
Plutonia glared at him and raised a finger at him. A loud gunshot came out of her finger and his lime green bowler hat was shot out of his arm. Fudge froze from shock while processing all of what just happened.
"That good enough for you? That was a mere fraction of my magic, magic that dated back millennia ago. Sure, some was drained, but I'm still strong enough to at least hold my own. Now how about you actually start listening to reason, Cornelius Fudge?" She asked him while he frantically picked up his hat.
"Cornelius, I beg you to see through to this. If you take the steps I recommend, history will remember you as the greatest minister of magic of all time. If you don't, you will be remembered as the man who stepped aside and let Voldemort destroy what we rebuilt thirteen years ago onward. We must remove the dementors of Azkaban and to befriend the giants." Dumbledore said.
"Befriending them? Removing the dementors? You really have gone mad, Dumbledore. I would be kicked out of office just for suggesting it. Am I to understand that all of you are starting a panic that will destabilize our world we rebuilt after thirteen years!? You only using Harry and Cedric's word, and the actions of a possessed child!? Seems to me like you're just swallowing up nonsense. Especially one that's a Parselmouth." Fudge rambled on.
"What! Did! You! Just! Say!?" Plutonia spat as aura was being channeled out of anger. "Those actions were to save the lives of witnesses. Everything Derek had achieved, learned, and discovered a cure for a dangerous magical condition, were all done by him. I cannot intervene, unless it's a life-threatening situation, him learning a new magical power for his eyes, and for situations like this." She added.
"She's right, Cornelius. You are blinded by the power you hold. You constantly rely on the so-called purity of blood. It is truly how one grows to be, and the decisions they choose to make on their own. You have left those that followed him before to take care of creatures. They will return to Voldemort's side, losing all supposed loyalty to you. You can do as you wish, but I will be doing what I see fit to counter this act. If you will not see the error of your ways, we will be having a parting of the ways." Dumbledore continued on from before.
Fudge chuckled while regaining a lot of swagger.
"I gave you free rein. If you are going against me, things are going to change. Juan, see to it that Crouch Jr. gets the dementor's kiss. Crouch, if you are going to side with Dumbledore, then you can clear out your desk. You've already had a scandal with your son going to Azkaban, and practically breaking him out not long afterwards. And you…" He said while eyeing Plutonia.
"…" She glared at him.
"The world will know of the danger you put others through tonight, especially on how you attacked me. Like the rest of your kind, you sought nothing but danger to both worlds. Oh, I know of your history." He finished.
Plutonia didn't say or do anything. Although she had some nerves touched, she kept her cool.
"You are a fool. There! Look!" Snape yelled while approaching him and showing his Dark Mark on his wrist. "It wasn't this dark earlier, and it burned the moment he summons us. Karkaroff also had one as well, and he fled the moment it burned." He pointed out to him.
Fudge looked at it with disgust. He faced Dumbledore once again.
"We have nothing more to discuss, but I'll be in touch tomorrow morning." He said before he turned to Harry. "One thousand galleons will be given to you tomorrow. There was meant to be a ceremony for such, but given the outcome…" He said before finally leaving.
"Juan, you won't do this, will you?" Dumbledore asked.
"I cannot go against his orders, but I can delay it until after he stands his trial in front of the whole Wizengamot. If found guilty, then yes, we will proceed with the dementor's kiss as sentencing him to death." Juan said.
"I'm sorry. I couldn't stop his return." Plutonia spoke up looking down in shame.
"He was gonna return either way. We'd appreciate your help when you can." McGonagall said.
"He's gonna be the big user than me. I'm just…in his mind. Speaking of…" She said before facing Cedric and walked towards him. "Listen, that enchantment I did to you has saved your soul, but it isn't permanent. It's forbidden to do normally, but tonight, I had to pull all the strings." She said.
"How can you make it permanent? Please! Tell us what you need us to do!" Amos asked.
"That's something only Cedric can do. He must perform an act that will save Derek's life and soul. It cannot be orchestrated. It has to be a real-life danger. You'll have ten years tonight to get it done, otherwise you will die in your sleep." Plutonia explained.
"We owe you a debt of gratitude. If that's all I need to do, then it seems like I got nothing to worry about." Cedric said.
Plutonia nodded then looked towards Cho, who continued to hold her boyfriend tight. She smiled at her.
"I knew you'd be a great friend to my descendant, Cho Chang. Thank you." She said.
"You…know me?" Cho asked.
"I keep an eye on things in his subconscious and look into his memories. He's lucky to have you in his circle of friends." She said. She then looked back at Derek. "I have to return. My time is almost up. Whenever we meet again, I'm sure it'll be under better circumstances. Rest well. Farewell for now." She said before she faded away into his mind.
After she vanished, Derek remained in his bed, now truly asleep.
"And to think, he's the one that is destined to bring balance to both worlds." Dumbledore said. He then turned to the others. "We must perform our acts quickly and bring in the old friends from the first wizarding war. Barty, what will you do?" He asked.
"I may host to try to persuade the ministry and the world of Fudge's corruption. If we get enough, we can throw him out of office. I do not think I should run given my history, unfortunately." He said.
"I'll go alert my father about what's going on." A man named Bill Weasley, Ron's oldest brother said.
"Be discrete, and hurry." Dumbledore said.
"Right." Bill said before he left.
"What of Derek?" Juan asked.
"I fear that he will be more involved than ever. If what Cornelius said was true and mark him as a criminal to the world, then I'm afraid that he must spend a limited time to the public. You know what to do." Dumbledore said.
"Leave it to me." He said.
With Voldemort back, the second wizarding war is now on the rise, and everyone will now have a key role during said war. What must Derek do to fight through this crisis, and win? Find out more now that they have reached a parting of the ways as the story continues.
