Chapter 6: The Viridian Forest Showdown
Charles, Benny and Flo decided to stay one more day in Viridian City before heading off. This was so they can restock on supplies and to do some training with Pyro and Mystic.
Ash, Pikachu left the morning after the incident, eager to get their first gym battle in Pewter City. Misty, still angry about her bike, had followed Ash so that he can repay her. She said farewell to Charles and Flo, hoping to see them again, before running straight after Ash yelling about her bike.
Charles had a feeling that she's going to be following Ash for a long, long time.
Pyro and Mystic's training session was fruitful. Charles's had provided training weights from them to use to build their strength. Benny was teaching Pyro how to dodge and evade attacks, while Charles was helping Mystic build up her attack power in the nearby river. She hasn't made a lot of progress, but Mystic's enthusiasm made the training worthwhile.
The group took a break under a tree next to the river where Mystic can rest as well. Charles was about to take a nap when he heard a loud hissing sound. Charles looked up and saw an ekans dangling from the tree branches.
"Hello, there," Charles called up.
The ekans stared down.
"Your very pretty. I love your purple scales," he complimented.
The ekans gave a hiss-like giggle before answering.
("Hello, human. What are you doing under my tree?)" She asked snaking down to meet him.
"Sorry, we didn't know it was your tree. We just finished training and we're taking a break. We can move if we're a bother." Charles told the ekans.
If she was surprised by the fact that he can understand her she didn't show it.
("Training? What ever for?") she asked curiously.
Charles preceded to tell her all about his journey and she was interested.
"Would like to join, you'll be a great part in our team," he invited.
("Hmm, naturally you'll want a Pokemon as magnificent as I am and since you begged for my presence I'll take you on your offer,") the ekans declared snootily with a proud smirk causing Charles and the Pokemon to sweatdrop.
The ekans then turned towards them shyly.
("Do you feed us? I haven't eaten anything for a while,") she added, causing the group to look at her with deadpanned faces.
"Yes," Charles answered simply.
("Naturally you would cater to me,") the ekans declared gaining back her snobbish attitude.
The others just sighed.
Before putting her in a pokeball, he gave her the name Boa. Which she agreed to after saying it a few times to herself.
Afterwards the team headed back to the Pokemon Centre ready for tomorrow.
The group had woken up bright and early at nine o'clock. Well Flo did, Charles and Benny had to wake up at five o'clock. When she asked why they were getting up so early, Charles told her that by the time their mother had stopped saying her goodbyes it would be nine o'clock.
After saying their goodbyes, they began their trek through the Viridian Forest.
"So have you decided what Pokemon your going to use for the Pewter City Gym?" Flo asked Charles.
"Well, I don't think Mystic is ready for battles yet. Boa just joined so I need to train her. So maybe Pyro and Benny unless we meet another Pokemon on the way," Charles told his plan to Flo who nodded in agreement.
"Pardon me," a voice called making the stop, "but are you from Pallet Town?"
They looked around and spotted a figure in the shadows of the trees. It looked to be a boy about their age dressed as a Japanese samurai with a katana in his hand and net on his back.
"Err... yes," Charles replied, unsure who he was.
Shouting a loud battle cry, the samurai suddenly ran towards him with his katana raised. He was a couple of feet in front of Charles when he raised his katana above his head, poised to strike.
Charles stepped to the side, put his right foot out and tripped the samurai who fell flat on his face.
The group looked at the fallen samurai for a couple of seconds.
"Right, let's get going," Charles said and they continued their walk towards Pewter City.
"Wait a minute," the samurai cried, trying to get up with his heavy armour on.
"Can we help you?" Flo asked the strange boy.
The samurai stood to his feet and faced Charles again.
"I am Samurai! I am also shrewd, fearless and completely invincible in combat. I here to challenge any trainer from Pallet Town who think they are worthy of becoming a trainer," Samurai declared dramatically.
The others were a little stunned by this kid.
("Is everybody we going to meet on this journey going to be this weird,") Benny asked with a sigh.
"Well, that's..." Charles started to say.
"Weird," Flo suggested.
("Obnoxious,") Benny also suggested.
"...unique. I was going to say unique," Charles finished, giving the others with a slight glare.
"So, do you accept my challenge? I must warn you, novice. I am a master of bug Pokemon anything you will do would do nothing against my expertise. What do you say?" Samurai asked, not giving up the theatrics and waving his katana around.
"Ok," Charles agreed simply with a shrug, unswayed by the boy's threats.
His simple answer disappointed Samurai.
Nearby a caterpillar-like Pokemon with a green body and big eyes was munching happily on a leaf.
This caterpie was known by the other Pokemon for being very active. It was always running (crawling) around bushes, going up and down trees and using String Shot to avoid all the trainers trying to capture it. The only time it will stop for then a minute was when it was eating.
Whilst eating his fifty seventh leaf, the caterpie heard a commotion. Curiously, he looked to see three humans and a Pokemon talking to each other. The oddly dressed human was pointing his metal thing at the human in the hat, the human with pink hair and the yellow Pokemon.
The human in the hat said something and stood across to the oddly dressed human who took out a red and white ball.
The caterpie crawled closer to the scene.
"Are you ready to fight, novice?" Samurai asked taking out a pokeball.
"I am. Also the name's Charles Roberts, not novice," Charles' replied with a small frown. Charles pulled down his goggles and the battle began.
(Battle Start)
"Benny would you like to take this?" Charles asked calmly to his brother.
("My pleasure,") he said jumping down from his shoulder and got into a battle stance.
"Pinsir, assume battle mode!" Samurai said throwing his pokeball to release a brown bipedal bug Pokemon with two large pincer on its head.
"A pinsir hmm," Charles said to himself as he got his pokedex out of his pocket.
Pinsir: If it fails to crush the victim in its pincers, it will swing it around and toss it hard.
"Alright, Benny. Do routine Gamma and mind out for its pinsers," Charles ordered calmly.
("Right,") Benny confirmed.
"Pinsir use Tackle!" Samurai instructed.
The pinsir charged at Benny ready to attack the pikachu.
'Only a novice wouldn't order their Pokemon to move,' the samurai thought confidently, noticing Charles hadn't made a move yet,
As soon as the pinsir was close enough, Benny shot forwards and avoided the pinsir's attack. Benny ran around his opponent picking up more speed, more power. The pinsir tried to catch up, but Benny was going too fast for it. When the pinsir wasn't looking, Benny made his move.
("Quick!") Benny hit the pinsir, ("at-'") and again, ("tack!") and once more. The pinsir suffered significant damage from the three Quick Attacks.
'What! He didn't even give any orders,' Samurai thought in shock.
The samurai shook off his shock, "Pinsir use Vice Grip!" he ordered.
The pinsir tried to grab onto Benny, but before he could Benny dug into the ground and avoided the pincers.
("Where did he go?") the pinsir asked looking around.
Neither the pinsir nor Samurai noticed that Charles, who has been standing still this whole time, tapped his foot on the ground. After Charles tapped his foot, the ground beneath the pinsir opened up and Benny hit it with a powerful uppercut.
Benny was about to use his Iron Tail on the pinsir to finish it off, but noticed it had already been knocked out.
("Damn. Maybe I'll finish the routine in the next battle,") Benny sighed as Samurai checked on his Pokemon.
"Good work, Benny," Charles called out from his side of the pitch.
"Woohoo, well done!" Flo congratulated from the side.
The samurai, having recalled his pinsir, looked up at Charles.
"Not bad. Maybe you are not as much of a novice as you first seem," Samurai... congratulated?
"Err... thanks, I guess," Charles hesitantly said.
Meanwhile, the caterpie was jumping up and down in joy.
("Yeah! They won, they won! That was so awesome!") he cried.
He then saw that the weirdly dressed human was taking another pokeball out.
("They're going to do it again! I want a go, I want a go!") it said as he used String Shot to swing towards the pitch.
"Ready to fight me again?" Samurai asked taking out another pokeball.
He opened it up to reveal a metaod, a green cocoon Pokemon with two eyes on either side of its head.
Charles's opened his pokedex.
Metapod: This Pokemon is vulnerable to attack while its shell is soft, exposing its weak and tender body.
"Ready," Charles accepted closing his pokedex. He turned to Benny, "you can rest for now."
Charles believes that no Pokemon in his team should battle twice in a row. This is to make sure they all get a break during long battle tournaments. As well to make sure their opponent doesn't come up with counter strategies.
("Sure,") Benny agreed as he made his way towards Flo and hopped on her shoulder.
Charles reached for Boa's pokeball on his belt, 'I know you're new, but this will be a great chance to see what you can do,' Charles thought, justifying his decision.
He turned Samurai with a straight face.
"Alright, do your best B-," Charles started to say ready to open the pokeball when he was interrupted,
("I AM HERE!") the caterpie shouted as it dropped in front of Charles.
...
...
...
Everybody stared at the caterpie for a few seconds as it jumped on the spot.
("Oh no,") the metapod mumbled in a monotone voice, ("it's him,") it rolled its eyes. This caterpie is notorious in this part of the Viridian Forest.
"Excuse me one moment," Charles called out to the confused Samurai and his metapod.
He bent down to the excitable caterpie, "Um sorry...," before he could continue the caterpie jumped into his arms.
("Hi! Who are you? What are young doing? Is it game? I love games! The other caterpie don't like playing with me, because they think I ruin things, but I think their jealous, because I am so much faster than them and they are too slow. What are you wearing on your head? You look like parasect. Why is that human dressed weirdly? Can you teach me some of those moves you taught that pikachu? I never seen a human this close before. A lot of humans try and capture me, but I am also too fast for them. I have to be the fastest caterpie in history. Anyway, what game are you playing. It looks fun and I love fun. It's so much fun! Can I play your game, I promise I'll be very good. Please, please, please, please please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!") the carterpie said rapidly to the sweatdropping Charles.
"Ok, ok. Slow down. You want to battle that metapod?" Charles asked.
The caterpie nodded quickly.
("Yes, yes, yes! Wait a minute! Can you understand me!? Wow that's so amazing! And very weird! Is it a superpower? Are you lab experiment? Are you an alien? Are you actually a Pokemon disguised as a human? Are you-,") before the caterpie could continue Charles covered its mouth.
"I will answer all your questions later. If you want to battle you have to listen to everything I tell you and you can't get distracted by anything, ok," Charles told the caterpie who nodded his head rigorously.
He released the caterpie who jumped from his arms and stood in front of him ready to battle.
"Are you ready now?" Samurai asked inpatiently.
"Yes, I will be battling with this caterpie... that I just met," Charles said, uncertain what's going to happen.
"What just happened?" Flo asked from the side.
("Beats me,") Benny replied.
Charles took out his pokedex to scan caterpie.
Caterpie; Its short feet are tipped with suction pads that enable it to tirelessly climb slopes and walls.
"Metapod use harden," Samurai ordered.
The metapod's shell glinted for a moment indicating that it's protection has increased.
"How about that, novice," the samurai said with a smirk, "now all your attacks would be ineffective against my mighty metapod."
Charles started at the metapod for a couple of seconds before turning to the excitable caterpie.
"Caterpie use String Shot and wave him about," Charles instructed.
("Yippee!") the caterpie cried shooting a string from it's mouth and lifting the metapod of the ground.
("Round and round he goes!") the caterpie cheered as he swung the metapod in a loop above his head.
Samurai couldn't do anything, the metapod only knows how to harden and so the caterpie kept swinging him around. Apparently, the caterpie is immune to getting dizzy as he continued his fun for five straight minutes.
"Ok. You can let him down now," Charles eventually ordered causing the caterpie to let go of his string and throwing the metapod right into the samurai.
Both metapod and Samurai were knocked out and thus Charles won the battle.
(Battle end)
("Yay we did it, we did it!") the caterpie cried as he jumped up and down.
"Err Charles. He's completely unconscious," Flo said observing the samurai.
"We may have overdone this," Charles sighed, retrieving the first aid kit from his bag.
"I must say, you have been a worthy adversary," Samurai groaned out as he sat leaning on a nearby tree. Flo was tending to his head bandages and the metapod shaped bruise on the samurai's chest.
"Again, sorry about all of that. That caterpie was much stronger then I was expecting," he apologised, glancing at said caterpie jumping happily around an agitated Benny.
"It's fine. That caterpie is well known by the other Pokemon in the forest," Samurai explained.
"Why is he so... active?" Flo asked curiously as they all looked towards the caterpie.
"Hmm... I don't know for sure, but I think he just wants attention," Samurai said.
"Attention?" Flo questioned.
"Indeed. From what I've seen that caterpie doesn't have any friends and seem to be isolated from the other caterpie. So he tries to make up for it by trying to get as much attention as possible from the other Pokemon. Which, of course, makes the other Pokemon annoyed with him. That caterpie may seem energetic, but inside I think he just doesn't want to be alone," Samurai explained, making Charles and Flo feel bad for the caterpie.
Charles looked at the caterpie for a moment before walking towards him and Benny.
("Why are you golden? Is it because you eat golden things. What golden things do you eat? Is it yummy? Is it-,") the caterpie asked his string of questions. Benny looked like he was going to shock the bug Pokemon if he asks one more question.
Luckily, Charles interrupted in time.
"Caterpie, may I ask you a question?" Charles asked the excitable caterpie.
("Yes, yes, yes! Can I ask you questions after?") caterpie replied nodding his head rigorously.
"Of course. I just wanted to know if you had any friends," Charles asked.
The caterpie paused for a moment. For the first time the caterpie looked nervous.
("Of course I do. I've got loads and loads. There're here somewhere,") the caterpie answered sheepishly not looking into Charles' inquisitive eyes.
"I know your lonely, caterpie," Charles said making the Pokemon flinch, "is that why you are like this?" Charles asked the now depressed looking caterpie.
The caterpie nodded sadly, hoping he wouldn't be mad at him.
"Well, how about you join us," Charles said surprising the caterpie.
("Really? But I'm really irratating,") the caterpie asked in disbelief.
"Who told you that you were irritating?" Charles asked sternly. The caterpie turned his head towards Benny. When Benny saw the caterpie's sad gaze and his brother's annoyed glare; he whistled innocently to himself trying to look inconspicuous.
Charles raised his eyebrow at Benny. Benny sighed and came up towards the caterpie.
("I'm sorry, caterpie. I didn't mean to call you irritating. I was just angry at not being able to finish my routine,") Benny apologised.
("But you were so cool,") chirped the caterpie jumping up and down, ("can you teach me some of those moves.")
Benny knew that the caterpie evolutionary line can't learn some of the moves he knew, but he didn't want to disappoint him.
("Err... yeah... sure,") Benny agreed scratching the back of his head. This caused the caterpie to jump around again.
"So caterpie," Charles said causing the caterpie to temporarily stop his happy jig, "would you like to join the team?"
("Yes please. I promise I'll give it my all,") the caterpie agreed happily.
"Excellent. Now we have to give you a name," Charle pondered.
"What about Hurricane," Flo suggested coming over after treating Samurai, "you know like when a butterfree flaps its wings it causes a hurricane."
"That's perfect. Although, I feel like that caterpie doesn't have to become a butterfree to cause hurricanes," he noted dryly as said caterpie was spinning around in a circle on its tail pretending to be a hurricane.
"I guess he likes it too," Flo said amused by the caterpie's antics.
"Alright Hurricane, let's get you in your poke-," before Charles could finish his sentence he noticed that hurricane was no longer in his spot.
The group looked down the path to see Hurricane crawling quickly away.
("Whoosh! I'm Hurricane and I will blow my enemies away! Whoosh!") he cried out still pretending to be a hurricane and now making whooshing noises.
"HEY! YOU NEED TO GET IN YOUR POKEBALL FIRST!" Charles shouted as the group chased after the excited caterpie.
("Great. Now that caterpie's got a motto,") Benny sighed as he rode on his brother's shoulder.
"Err... guys. A little help," Samurai called out to the retreating group. He was still in quite a lot of pain.
They didn't hear him.
Hope you enjoyed that chapter. I just noticed the other day that I had written chapter 4 instead of chapter 5 on the last chapter. I've fixed it now, but I should pay more attention next time. Hope you enjoyed the introduction of two new member's of Charles' team: Boa the ekans and Hurricane the caterpie who will, by next chapter, become a butterfree. Thanks.
