Chapter 14

Karen was already halfway down the hall. When she got to her room, she dressed Lily into her pajamas and tucked her in. She was on her way to the kitchen to make a pot of coffee when she noticed the light on in Lucas' room. She went to turn it off when she was startled by a little boy curled up on the bed. Karen and Lily had a long flight, so she figured it was the fatigue catching up to her. She rubbed her eyes and looked again and the little boy was still there.

Karen quickly walked out and went into the living room.

"Uhh Lucas-"

"I know mom. That's what I wanted to talk to you about."

"Okay, talk." Karen said as she folded her arms.

"You're going to want to sit down." Lucas said as he guided his mother over to the sofa. He sat down too and took a deep breath.

"Mom…he's my son."

Silence.

Then Karen burst into laughter. Obviously the exhaustion was getting to her.

"Good one Lucas."

"Mom, I'm serious."

The edge to his voice quickly stopped her laughter. "You'd better be kidding." Karen thought about what she just said. "No pun intended."

"He's my kid." Lucas said simply.

It only took a few seconds for Karen's shock to turn into anger. She punched his arm.

"Why am I just now finding this out?!"

"Ouch!" He rubbed his arm. For a little woman, she sure packs a powerful punch. "You're just finding out now because I'm just finding out now."

Karen quirked her eyebrows in confusion.

"Well, not right now, but I swear I have only known only a little bit longer than you've known. Well maybe a few weeks longer-"

"Lucas!" Karen interrupted. She knew her son was extremely nervous because he was rambling.

"Mom, it's complicated."

"Well, you better get to explaining." She told him seriously.

"You remember Brooke?" He was stalling.

Karen fixed him with a mean glare, telling him to get to the point.

"…Okay, sure you do. So, um, it seems that Brooke and I conceived a child during our senior year of high school."

"I don't understand." Karen said.

Lucas eyebrows went up. "Do you want me to get graphic? Because I'm sure I will die if I share details of my sex life with my mother."

"No. I don't understand how you and Brooke could be so careless again after the first pregnancy scare. Do you remember the talk we had?"

Lucas vividly remembered the talk he had with his mother. They had talked about the pros and cons of teenage pregnancy; him being one of the pros because he was a result of it.

"I know mom, but it happened. Brooke and I were in love. Surely you can understand that."

Karen could relate. She too was in love and she had a son because of it. But she didn't want history repeating itself. "I understand Lucas. I am sorry I overreacted."

Lucas continued explaining. "So, out of the blue, Brooke was really angry with me. We had a big fight at Nathan and Haley's wedding, you remember?"

Karen vividly remembered Nathan and Haley's beautiful wedding. Although a few dramatics almost ruined it. She remembered Lucas's classmate Rachel getting drunk and going after Deb's brother Cooper. She also remembered telling Lucas that he was going to be a big brother; after the whole purse fiasco. Karen never thought she would become a mother again and a grandmother at the same time.

She shook her head a little at that. She was somebody's grandmother! She tuned back in to Lucas.

"After our break up, Brooke left. She just disappeared! I never saw her again." Lucas voice cracked a bit. "It wasn't until later that I found out that she was living in New York. Anyways, she came back to Tree Hill a while ago and I happen to run into her at Haley and Nate's house. And we had another fight."

"That's not a nice way to welcome someone home." Karen told him.

"Mom, she broke my heart! And I needed her to know that."

"Did you ever consider her feelings?"

"No." Lucas hung his head in shame.

"And I am sure that your heart wasn't the only one broken."

"Anyways that's when she told me that I had a son."

Lucas fast forward through the other fights and name calling. He really didn't need another bruised arm. He told her about Brooke being attacked and why Sebastian had to stay with him.

"I really hope that Brooke gets well soon. And when she does, you two will have to make a decision regarding…Oh gosh! What's his name?"

"Sebastian."

"Sebastian." She let the name roll of her tongue. "Like Saint Sebastian?"

Lucas smiled. "Yeah, I was glad Brooke chose that for his name."

Karen walked past Lucas and quietly tip toed into his room. She studied her grandson. Sebastian lay curled up in the middle of the bed. The light from the lamp made his blonde hair glow like a halo.

"He is definitely a saint." She said as she looked him over, trying to find family resemblances. His hair was a dead giveaway but she could also see some of Lucas's nose and ears in the boy.

"I see he picked up one of your habits." Karen told Lucas.

"Which one?" Lucas asked, clearly confused.

"Thumb sucking." She grinned.

"Mom you must be really tired because I never sucked my thumb."

"Oh please! Keith and I thought about putting hot sauce on it but you grew out of it…eventually."

"Ha ha. Whatever."

They turned around to leave so they wouldn't disturb Sebastian. However, Karen moved closer to the bed and placed a kiss to Sebastian's forehead.

Lucas stood stunned by the doorway. A few hours ago, he was scared to even talk to the little boy. And here his mom was showing that she loved him before she could get a chance to meet him. A quiet calm came over Lucas and some of his fear began to melt away.

Karen sensed her son's fear and she patted him on the shoulder. "Everything will be fine." Then she ushered him out of the room.

Out in the hallway, Karen yawned. "I'm going to bed. Is there any other news that I should know about?"

Uh oh. That nervous feeling was slowly creeping its way back in.

"Uh," He gulped. "I'm engaged." Lucas said as he nervously rubbed the back of his neck.

Karen's eyes went wide. "You and Brooke are getting married?"

"No, me and Peyton."

Karen shook her head. She forgot all about Peyton.

"There's one more tiny, little thing." He added.

"And what would that be?" Karen asked, exhausted.

"Peyton doesn't know about Sebastian."
