A/N: Hello, fellow readers. I've returned with a new chapter. I've added some parts from the old draft to make this. The reason is part of the rework, and I believe the travel part appeared to be moving too fast. In addition, it was as though Carrie wasn't the center of all this, so I hoped to fix all that. So, grab some food, relax, and happy reading! Oh, and have a great three-day weekend!
Disclaimer: Killer Instinct and Carrie belong to their respective owners.
A range of emotions swirled within Carrie as Orchid's suggestion to stay with Maya sank in her head. In her mind, Orchid had a point about staying within the Disavowed. The longer she remained with them, the more danger she was in. Also, some agents considered her a liability because of her unbridled powers.
However, she couldn't bear leaving Orchid behind. Like Jago, Carrie sensed a kindred spirit with the secret agent. With unique abilities, they survived to find their place on Earth.
While staring at the floor, tears formed in her eyes as Carrie clenched her hands, grabbing the hem of her Tibetan skirt. "Ms. Orchid, what will happen to you if I go?"
"Hey, no need to fret about me. I'm a survivor. Besides, you'll love Maya's place. It has waterfalls, open space, and llamas."
"Llamas?"
"I take you've never seen one before," Maya said.
Carrie shook her head. "Except in books and computer videos in the library."
"You never had a TV where you're from?"
"No. It's not because Mama and I were poor. She doesn't want me to fall into sin."
"Huh. Interesting. I never owned a TV, so I can't say if I agree with your mother. However, you'll have plenty of opportunities to explore the world at my place. Also, like Orchid said, you won't be alone. Jago and Pemba will be with you. Speaking of which, where is Pemba? I heard she's a shapeshifter."
"Maya, you see that young woman sleeping on a cot? She wears a chuba with yellow dharma wheel imprints," Orchid said.
The monster hunter scanned the room until she found the figure. "Well, I'll be. She looks so serene. You would never guess she was a shapeshifter."
"Have you come across anyone like her?" Carrie asked.
"Well, not me, but my comrades have. From my understanding, they're crafty devils," Maya said. "They can blend in anywhere, appearing like anyone or anything they choose, making it almost impossible to detect them. Their ability to change forms allows them to gather information and escape dangerous situations, so we must stay on our toes around them. Pemba seems different, though. It's rare to find someone with such power who uses it to help instead of deceive."
"I don't understand. What do you do?"
"I'll be honest, dear. I'm a monster hunter, meaning I track and eliminate creatures threatening humanity. In my years, I've hunted everything from rogue werewolves and elusive vampires to ancient spirits and cursed relics. But the most dangerous creatures are those hiding in plain sight, like Pemba's kind."
"Could humans be monsters too?"
Maya paused, choosing her words. "In a way, yes. Humans can harbor monstrous tendencies driven by greed, hatred, or fear, which can make them just as dangerous as any supernatural being. With your situation, I never considered you a monster. What appears monstrous is perhaps a misunderstood soul seeking a place to belong. We all have struggles, and how we face them defines us.
"So far, you're taking the first steps in learning how to control your power and understanding the risks involved. It's an arduous journey, but guidance and support are crucial. Keep an open heart and mind, and you'll find your true path."
"Sister?" a groaned voice called, drawing attention as Jago awoke.
"Jago, hey." Orchid moved to his side. "How are you feeling?"
The monk breathed. "Like falling into the darkest pit and climbing towards the light. What's going on? Who is this woman?"
"Oh, this is Maya. She's a friend of mine. We told Carrie she would be safe if you, her, and Pemba stayed with Maya."
"What do you mean? Where are we moving?"
"To the Andes Mountains in South America," Maya said. "It's remote enough to keep Carrie safe while you help her train to hone her abilities. It'll also keep everyone hidden from those seeking to harm her."
Jago fell silent while processing the information. He glanced between Orchid and Maya, assessing the situation. "If it means ensuring Carrie's safety, I won't object. When should we leave?"
Before Orchid answered, the door burst open, revealing a concerned Jordan.
"Boss, we have a problem," he said, panting.
Orchid stood up. "What is it?"
"David and his team spotted some Stalker Units 500 clicks away. They will breach the perimeter or find this location soon. ARIA might've tweaked them to detect even the faintest psychic residue."
"Ah, shit!" Orchid brushed her hair. As such, Carrie buried her face in her hands. "Jordan, send a small search party to find a well-hidden spacious location. Also, have everyone pack everything and prepare for an emergency evac. After that, inform Jean I need to see him."
"Yes, ma'am!" The agent departed.
"What's all the ruckus?" TJ awoke from his nap, rubbing his eyes. "Why is everyone in such a hurry?"
"We're facing a potential breach from Stalker Units," Orchid said. "Pack your things. We must go."
"What?! Are those dino-freaks back?! Well, I'm not one to run from a challenge, but I'm tired of facing those motherfuckers!" TJ started packing what he brought. "So, where are we going?"
"I'm having everyone move to another location once the search party returns. Jean will lead. I'll also have him hold down the fort at the mentioned location while we head to South America with Maya."
"Oh?" TJ glanced at the cloaked woman, a flirtatious smile tugging his lips. "Maya, right? What's a PYT like you here?"
The monster hunter furrowed her brows. "PYT?"
"Pretty Young Thing. Reference to Michael Jackson. RIP to the man."
Maya scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Orchid, is he like this with women?"
The secret agent sighed, giving TJ a stern look. "Yes, but he knows when to stop and act serious. Jago, I understand you're not up to strength yet, but will you be alright for the journey?"
"I'll manage. Carrie's safety is my priority. Well, our priority."
"Alright. We move when the search party returns with the coordinates."
"So, quick question: how will we get to South America?" TJ asked.
The small group glanced at Pemba, who had awoken from the commotion. The shapeshifter blinked when everyone stared at her.
"Kina sabailē malā'ī hērirahēkā chan?" she asked. Why is everyone looking at me?
"Oh, you gotta be kidding me," TJ said, exasperated.
The night had fallen over Ukraine's war-torn zone, with the stars and moon casting a dim, ethereal glow on the landscape. The tension in the air was palpable as everyone began their evacuations. While Jean handled operations with the Disavowed, Orchid's small group checked over their provisions for the journey to Maya's home.
"I can't believe we're about to ride on a shapeshifter," TJ said. "I mean, no disrespect to Pemba, but it's not every day you hitch a ride on someone who can change forms."
While gazing at the starry sky, Pemba smiled at the boxer.
TJ's apprehension, however, was still apparent as he stuffed the last gear into his bag.
"Relax, mighty one," Jago said. "Pemba's alterations are smooth. If I recall, this will be her second trip across the continent. We'll be safe. Besides, it's the fastest way to get there."
"Yeah, but how did you and Carrie handle it?"
"It takes some time to adjust, but you learn to trust her abilities. Carrie and I have seen firsthand how reliable Pemba can be. After all, she saved us from an evil cult in Tibet."
"Is that right?" TJ raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite himself. "I might hear about that one day. Just hope I don't get airsick."
"Petite Fleur." Jean approached Orchid, who checked provisions. "I received word from the search party. They found a suitable location but could not return because of Stalker Unit sightings. They've marked the coordinates on our digital map."
"Alright. Inform everyone to leave in twenty minutes while the night offers cover. I'll contact you once I reach South America."
"Understood. Be careful out there."
"Don't fret. I'll be fine."
"Hey, Orchid?" Nikita asked as Jean departed. "Do you mind if I join you? I know it's last minute, but I could help. Plus, I have some unfinished business in South America."
"I see. Apart from that, are you requesting this because you owe it to my brother for saving you from the Dreamlands?"
"I suppose part of it is, and I want to help Carrie too."
"Huh, strange. First, you want nothing to do with Carrie and wish for her death. Now you want to help her? What brought about this change?"
Nikita sighed, her eyes reflecting distant pain. "While trapped in the Dreamlands, I saw some of Carrie's memories. Words can't describe what she endured. Carrie experienced horrific things, and I learned she'd fought those battles long before we crossed paths. I owe it to her—and myself—to make amends and stand by her side now."
Orchid's expression softened, her suspicion turning to understanding. "Very well. You can join us. Oh, and whatever deadlines you have when we arrive, square that away."
"Yes, ma'am! I'll make sure everything is in order before we leave."
While everyone conducted last-minute checks, Carrie approached Pemba, still stargazing. She spoke via mind link, "Hey, Pemba, I'm sorry if we asked you about this enormous task of bringing us to South America."
"No need to apologize. I overheard the interaction between you, Maya, and Orchid while napping. Besides, I always wanted to travel to help my mother while she was still alive. What is it like when you cross the ocean to reach Tibet?"
"It's like a vast expanse of endless water, a journey where you lose track of time and space. The ocean has its rhythm, and you become part of it. It's humbling and awe-inspiring, like seeing the universe itself."
"That sounds incredible. I can't wait to experience it."
"Pemba?" Maya and the gang approached the shapeshifter. "We have everything we need, so whenever you're ready."
Once Pemba motioned everyone to stand back, she closed her eyes and brought her hands into a praying position. A surge of light enveloped her, shimmering like a thousand stars condensed into a single moment. The air crackled with energy as her form shifted. Pemba's body expanded, her skin becoming gleaming feathers as she morphed into a kaiju-sized silver-white bird. Massive wings unfurled, casting a shadow that swallowed the ground beneath her. With a mighty screech, she signaled her readiness, and the group stood in awe of the magnificent creature before them.
"Man, I'll never forget how awesome that was!" TJ said. Pemba lowered her colossal body, extending one wing to the ground as a makeshift platform. "Ladies first."
Maya chuckled while shaking her head. "I'll give you points for being a gentleman, but don't think it'll win a woman's heart yet." She climbed onto Pemba's wing, followed by the rest of the group.
"Ms. Maya, how long until we reach your home?" Carrie asked.
"On a regular plane, it's thirteen hours. With Pemba, we might cut the time in half. However, we might encounter some issues. The biggest challenge is hurricanes, as it's hurricane season. I pray we don't run into those during the journey."
The group secured their spots as they sat beside each other.
The last was TJ, who breathed and hesitated before climbing on Pemba's wing. "I've never liked heights, but I'll make an exception." He yelped when Pemba gave him a boost toward her back, securing him in place. "Alright, Jago, you and Carrie have done this, so what should we hold onto?"
The monk shrugged. "Just grip her feathers, but not too aggressive, and don't yank them out. Otherwise, you might have a bad day."
"Thanks for the encouragement." The boxer rolled his eyes. "I'll try not to ruin anyone's day, including mine."
Orchid glanced back as Jean and the Disavowed began their journey to their new base, some waving farewells. "Well, they're heading out. We should do the same."
As Pemba stood, she flapped her wings to ensure they worked well. Powerful wind gusts stirred dust and other small particles into the air, creating a swirling vortex around them. Soon, she started running before launching into the sky with a powerful thrust. The ground below became a distant memory as they soared higher, the wind rushing past them. The world below turned into a shadowy patch of a ruined town, remnants of buildings jutting like broken teeth.
Pemba's initial takeoff left everyone gripping her feathers, some with white knuckles.
"This is insane!" TJ shouted through the roaring wind. "Awesome, but insane at the same time!"
Once Pemba reached cruising height, the turbulence subsided, and the group relaxed and appreciated the breathtaking panorama below. The moon lit the landscape, highlighting the contrast between the lush forests and the desolate ruins. The silvery glow cast eerie shadows, making the town remnants look even more haunting.
"See?" Carrie said. "It's not so bad up here."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." TJ eased his grip. "It's beautiful in a spooky way."
Pemba spoke in her native tongue.
"Maya, Pemba needs help with directions," Jago said.
"Alright. Give me a minute." The monster hunter extracted a sleek, handheld device from her cloak pocket, tapping a few buttons to reveal a digital map. On the screen, a blue dot pulsed as it headed west. Maya studied the holographic map, her brow furrowed. Continuing in our current direction will lead us into hurricane-prone areas. If we head southwest, we should avoid the dangers. "Jago, tell Pemba to turn southwest."
The monk relayed the message in Tibetan, and Pemba shifted her trajectory, the group sensing the slight tilt.
Once again, Pemba leveled herself, and the ride smoothed out. The landscape below changed while veering in another direction. Although the desolate town was still present, they spotted signs of life and civilization in the distance. Small clusters of lights flickered like fireflies, showing settlements where people rebuilt from the ruins.
"Hey, Pemba? You should hide above the clouds. I'm not sure how people below would react to a giant flying bird," Carrie said through telepathy.
The shapeshifter acknowledged Carrie's suggestion with a low, resonant chirp. Her wings flapped and ascended, gliding into the clouds.
"Hey! How come we're moving higher?" TJ asked.
"We're hiding from settlements. Pemba's size might cause panic," Carrie said.
"Good call," Maya said. "We don't want unneeded attention."
As Pemba emerged above the cloud layer, a vast, ethereal sea of white greeted them, stretching in every direction. The moonlight bathed the clouds, giving them a soft, otherworldly glow that made the scene dreamlike.
"Oh, this is worth a picture." Nikita pulled out a camera from her assault pack and snapped several shots. She also kept everyone's presence to a minimum to avoid drawing attention from potential threats. "I can't wait to show these to my battle buddies."
Orchid leaned over to admire the photos. "I bet they'll be jealous. Make sure you don't post those online. We have enough problems without someone tracking us through social media."
"You got it, boss." Nikita tucked the camera back into her pack. "I'll keep these for ourselves."
"So, Maya, you mentioned you were looking for Kan-Ra. Who is he? What do you want from him?" Orchid asked.
The monster hunter fell silent and glanced around as everyone expected an answer. "It's a long story."
"Babe, we only have time," TJ said.
Maya breathed, annoyed with the boxer calling her babe. "I mentioned how the Night Guard formed in South America, right? Kan-Ra played a role in its creation. He was a sorcerer from ancient times. My father described him in his stories. He has a worn, mummified appearance, with tattered wrappings that clung to his shriveled form. His eyes glow with an eerie, hateful light, and his movements are fluid and jerky."
Carrie's face tightened as she listened, her fingers tracing the small cross pendant around her neck. Sorcery clashed with her Christian beliefs, leaving her wrestling with dark magic's realness.
"Kan-Ra came to the Andes Mountains 500 years ago," Maya said. "Around the time, Indigenous people believed their mummified ancestors could return to life because they saw them as powerful spiritual entities. Kan-Ra exploited these beliefs to gain influence and followers, reinforcing that he was an ancient, resurrected being.
"During his rule, Kan-Ra forced them to build a grand temple where he could practice his forbidden arts. He did unspeakable things to the people, from sacrificial rituals to draining their life force to sustain his twisted existence."
"Damn, he sounds like one evil dude," TJ said. "How did this Night Guard stop him?"
"Determined to liberate the people, a coalition of warriors planned to end Kan-Ra's reign," Maya continued. "They found him battling a bronze and rock golem, with vines intertwining its body. Despite not knowing the history behind the two, it was an opportunity they couldn't ignore. In one swoop, the warriors captured the creatures. Since they couldn't destroy the two beings, they devised a way to imprison them within the temple's deepest chambers.
"With Kan-Ra, they burned him and sealed his ashes in a jar. As for the golem, they found a green jewel attached to its forehead, which they believed allowed the creature to move. They shut down the golem by removing the jewel. In addition, they stored two daggers Kan-Ra wielded, which I now possess."
Maya's hands receded into the cloak, only to emerge with the daggers. The first blade shimmered with a radiant, almost ethereal glow as if forged from pure sunlight. In stark contrast, the second dagger was obsidian-black; its surface pulsed with ominous energy.
"These daggers are called Temperance and Vengeance. There's a reason I keep these two together. Vengeance, the dark dagger, provokes my ruthless side, urging me to slaughter what stands in my way. Temperance, the light dagger, prevents me from losing myself by buffering the darkness."
"Like having an angel and the devil on your shoulders," Carrie said.
Maya nodded. "The balance between them keeps me grounded. Wielding one dagger—Vengeance in particular—could damage my mental well-being."
"That's intense," TJ said. "How did you get ahold of them?"
Maya stared into space, her eyes clouded with memories. "It started when Ultratech attacked my home years ago. I suppose I was at fault because of unforeseen factors. Although the Night Guard was formidable, we were no match against Ultratech's advanced technology. During the conflict, Kan-Ra escaped from his prison. I grabbed the daggers to defend myself. When it ended, I… was the only one to escape. My friends and family…"
The group fell silent, empathizing with the warrior who endured so much.
"Damn. We're sorry for your loss," Nikita said.
Maya suppressed her tears. "It was long ago, but I appreciate the condolences. Soon after, I searched for Kan-Ra while planning to bring Ultratech to justice. I gathered information about the sorcerer from various sources, including ancient texts and rumors in the world's darkest corners. After some time, I found his lair in the Sahara Desert.
"As I snuck inside, he opened a portal. I had to stop him before he unleashed something. After defeating him, I threw Kan-Ra into the portal, where he wouldn't cause harm. I peered inside the portal while it closed, and visions flashed before me. It left a lasting impression on me, and I'd give anything to erase it from my mind."
"What visions did you receive?" Jago asked.
Maya fell silent for a while. "The world ending, with demons and monsters running amok. Cities were in ruins, and fire and darkness filled the sky. Among them was O Diablo, a monstrous entity commanding legions of infernal creatures. His eyes burned with evil, and his laugh echoed like thunder across the desolation. His sheer terror still haunts my dreams.
"Uncertain when this horrific event would occur, I returned home, where I rebuilt the Night Guard. It was no easy feat, but I recruited the greatest warriors and forged alliances with more minor factions. Even those who defected Ultratech joined my cause, as their knowledge of innovative technology helped strengthen the citadel."
"Given what you've been through, the Disavowed will help you," Orchid said.
"Same with us," Jago added, "but something bothers me. Why are you searching for this sorcerer if you sent him away?"
"A few months ago, rumors spread about Kan-Ra returning to our realm. Now, I take rumors with a grain of salt, but if they're true, I must confront him about the visions," Maya said.
"Do you think he could be the key to preventing this disaster?"
"It's difficult to say. Kan-Ra is a devious bastard, but I can't ignore the visions if he knows more about them. The world's future depends on it."
A/N: The first part of their journey has begun. Will they arrive at Maya's home safely? Also, how would they find the elusive Kan-Ra if he has returned? It's time for my brain to rest, so I'll see you later.
