Episode 6: Love, Like, Hate
The camera focuses on Chris, standing at the end of the Dock of Shame. "Last time on Total Drama Island." The scene cuts to flashbacks of the previous episode. "The contestants were tasked with hiding from Chef, who was hunting them with a spaghetti-zooka. But they couldn't always run and hide, thanks to some bracelets I gave them that electrocuted them if they moved when they shouldn't. Annie and Pony found a cave where the sasquatch of the island lives, which Eliza felt she had to save her from, only to find out it wasn't home. And because of that, Buttercup destroyed the cave. Back with the challenge though, when it came down to Elliott, Jenny, and Kim, Jenny accidentally caused Elliott to be eliminated first, giving Team Checkmate their first loss of the series. The team tried to vote out Mandy, but it turns out she actually listened to things I have to say, and had found all the Chrises of Invincibility so far. Using one up, she sent Elliott home, not that we know where that is."
The scene cuts back to Chris on the Dock. "Nice, a juicy bit of team conflict. I love when that happens. Will we get a bit more of that this time? Only one way to find out: keep watching this episode of Total. Drama. Island."
Intro song plays.
Team Checkmate walked out from the campfire ceremony, still in shock from what had just happened. Eliza jumped out from behind a bush as they were passing. "Hey guys, what happened?" asked Eliza. "I saw Mandy heading back to camp. Was it a non-elimination round? Is that why she didn't get eliminated?"
"Eliza…" sighed Steven. "You…might want to sit down for this."
"What?" asked Eliza, suddenly concerned. "What happened? And where's Elliott?"
"Eliza…" started Tulip. "Elliott…Elliott's gone."
"Gone?" asked Eliza. "But…you guys voted for Mandy, right? You all agreed that she needed to go."
"Yeah, well that doesn't matter when Mandy has four Invincibility statues," said Buttercup, clearly still annoyed.
"Actually, she's down to three now," said Dexter matter-of-factly.
"Invincibility statues?" asked Eliza, suddenly alarmed. "Wait…she found them? ALL OF THEM?!"
"That's right," said Ben. "None of our votes mattered, and they will continue to not matter for as long as she's on the team."
"Holy *beep*," said Eliza, almost looking like she was going to be sick. "Then how…"
"All we can do now is throw challenges until she runs out of statues," said Jessica. "And who knows who she'll choose to boot next."
"Or if she'll get another statue," said Tulip. "I'm sorry Eliza. There's nothing we can do."
"It's not your fault," said Eliza, wiping away a tear. "Poor Elliott. I hope he's going to be okay out there by himself."
Meanwhile…
"Hey, can you help me?" asked Elliott, now on a street in the middle of Huntsville, Muskoka, trying to get the attention of someone. "I need to get to…"
"Leave me alone kid," said the man he was talking to, shaking him off. Elliott sighed and tried to get another adult's attention.
Back at camp…
"HEY! What are you losers doing?" demanded Mandy. "If I find out you're plotting against me…"
"And what if we are?" snapped Buttercup, flying up into her face. "You're evil, and we want you gone."
"Well, in case you haven't noticed, that isn't happening any time soon," said Mandy, showing off her Invincibility Statues. "Unless some of you want to risk your chance at the $100,000." Everyone went quiet at that. "That's what I thought, peons." And with that, Mandy marched away, leaving her team in silence.
"Don't worry guys, I'm sure we can work something out," said Eliza. "I'm sure the rest of my team will want to help too, and so will Team Power Mouse."
Later…
"You want us to do WHAT?!" asked Jake.
"Help us get Mandy eliminated," said Steven. "Surely you've noticed how nasty she is."
"Well, yeah, but why do you want your own teammate eliminated so bad?" asked Luz. "That seems like a bad idea."
"Because she's evil," said Jessica. "Is that not enough?"
"Here's the thing though," said Dipper. "We're already in competition together. What else can we do besides keep beating you guys?"
"Keep an eye out for those Invincibility Statues," said Ben. "We don't care which one of you gets it, as long as Mandy doesn't."
"I guess we can consider it," said Kim. "We'll have to discuss it as a team though."
"Okay, thanks for your time," said Steven, leaving the Power Mouse cabin with the others.
"We are going to help them, right?" asked Mikey.
"Of course," said Kevin. "I mean, there's no real disadvantage to us for the competition, so why not?"
"The only question is: who gets the Invincibility Statue?" asked Jake.
"Whoever finds it, obviously," said Kevin. "Look, I know ultimately only one of us can win this thing, but I'd like to think you guys won't turn on each other for no good reason. All of you are good guys deep down, right?" The others mumbled in agreement as they started to get ready for bed.
Meanwhile…
"So where have you been?" asked Korra.
"I was finding out who Team Checkmate got eliminated," said Eliza.
"Let me guess: Mandy?" asked Danny. "That girl scares me, and I'm the ghost kid."
"They tried," said Eliza. "She's found all the Invincibility Statues though, so she's kinda sorta immune."
"Oh…oh, that's bad," said Jenny. "Didn't you say she's terrorising the animals here?"
"Yeah, she is," said Eliza. "And we need to do something about it."
"Who's this 'we' you speak of?" asked Lincoln.
"Linc, you're not actually going to ignore a teammate asking for help, are you?" asked Arnold.
"Against Mandy though?" asked Lincoln. "I mean, we're already in competition with her. All we have to do is keep trying to make her team lose, and eventually they should be able to vote her out, right?"
"Lincoln, you know all of us are going to support Eliza on this, don't you?" asked Annie.
"There's no way all of you would…" started Lincoln, only to see the rest of the team declaring their intention to help Eliza deal with Mandy. "Ugh, whatever."
The next few days were a tense time for the campers. Everyone was clearly annoyed and/or angry with Mandy, who was just revelling in the glory of being the most hated person on the island. Chris also loved the drama this was causing, and sensed he knew how to bring everyone's emotions to a boiling point.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" asked Chef.
"Listen, it's gonna make them hate each other so much," said Chris, putting the finishing touches in his challenge idea. "And the more they hate each other, the more drama that will cause. And the more drama there is, the better the ratings will be, and the better the ratings, the more money I get. And you too, I guess. To a lesser extent, of course."
"If you say so," said Chef with a shrug.
The day of the challenge, the contestants gathered around outside the Mess Hall. "Okay campers, are you ready for today's challenge?" asked Chris.
"Would you delay the challenge if we said no?" asked Annie.
"Absolutely not," said Chris. "Though more because I like to see you fail. Anyway, I've been sensing a lot of hostility on the island lately, so I've decided to make it so much worse. Could Mandy, Lincoln, and Jake please join me up here?" The three of them left their teams and stood in front of the rest of the group.
"I have a very bad feeling about this," said Kim.
"So, you may remember that I said that each challenge has a Chris of Invincibility hidden in it for you to find?" asked Chris. "Well, this one isn't so much hidden as it is just being awarded." To illustrate his point, Chris pulled an Invincibility Statue out of his pocket.
"Great, give it here," said Mandy, hand open. "I'll add it to the collection."
"Nuh uh, you need to win the challenge first," said Chris, putting it back in his pocket. "And oh boy, am I going to enjoy it."
"We get it, we're going to hate it. Let's hear it already," said Danny.
"Just let me bask in the brilliance of this a little longer," said Chris, who sighed in contentment. After a moment of silence where the contestants glared at him the whole time, Chris opened his eyes again. "Okay, explanation time."
"About fricken time," muttered Korra.
"So, as far as I can tell, these three are the most hated members of their respective teams," said Chris, getting some cries of protest.
"How am I the most hated on my team?" demanded Lincoln and Jake.
"Nah, this makes sense to me," said Mandy, shrugging with indifference.
"And you two are here because I said so," said Chris. "Now, zip it, I need to talk. Anyway, for today's task, these three need to get through unscathed. However, because I want to make you hate them more, they need to try and get scathed. Isn't that fun?"
"Why would you do that?" asked Tulip. "You know Mandy hates us, she'll go out of her way to get hurt to spite us."
"And then proceed to vote the most useless of you off," said Mandy. "You know what? Why don't I start trying to hurt myself now? I'm sure the old planks of the Mess Hall can give me a splinter or two."
Before she could do anything, a green flash appeared behind her, and Buttercup was pinning her arms. "Don't try anything," she said.
"Unhand me. Now," said Mandy, leaving little room for argument.
"I'd like to see you try and do anything to me," said Buttercup. "As scary as you are, you're still just a normal human."
"For now," said Mandy. "How did you get your powers, by the way?"
"The professor spilled Chemical X on some sugar, spice, and everything nice," said Buttercup. "Why do you…" Before Buttercup could finish, Mandy suddenly vomited violently on the ground. "EWW! Gross."
Confession Cam: Mandy
"I can't believe Buttercup would just casually use the n-word in front of me like that. Jeez, if that's how you get superpowers these days, I don't know if I want them."
"Tensions are already running high, and we haven't even started the challenge yet. I love it," said Chris, watching this in amusement. "Anyway, who wants the rest of the explanation?"
"Please, anything to distract me from what Buttercup said," said Mandy, gasping for air.
"Shut up, or I'll say it again," said Buttercup, alarming Mandy.
"Anyway, the challenge," said Chris, interrupting the girls. "There are three flags for you to collect. Grab them, and get back here. It's that simple."
"And the catch is?" asked Kim.
"Am I that predictable?" asked Chris knowingly.
"Yes," said every contestant in unison.
"Yeah, you got me," said Chris. "Your three friends here have to be the ones to grab the flags, so of course I put them in the most dangerous spots possible."
"Yep, we're screwed," said Ben.
"Now, it wouldn't be fair if the Chris of Invincibility wasn't available for everyone," said Chris. "So, here's how to win it. For you three, you need the most injuries. However, your team still has to win by getting back here first."
"BOO!" yelled Mandy.
"As for everyone else," said Chris. "You need to do something to sacrifice yourself for your injury prone teammate."
"BOO!" yelled Steven.
"I knew this would be popular," said Chris. "Anyway, your three flags are in the following locations: hanging about 500 feet up the 1,000-foot cliff, hanging above the shark infested water, and most dangerous of all, inside Chef's fridge."
"Be careful children, I still have some spaghetti left over," called Chef from inside.
"And you think any of us are going to get through this unharmed?" asked Kevin.
"I never said that," said Chris. "Anyway, your time begins…" Chris gave a blast from his airhorn. "Now."
"Let's start with the cliff," said Dipper. "For Jake, that will be the easiest to get."
"Let's go to the shark water," said Eliza. "I reckon we can get that one easily enough."
"What do you mean 'we'?" asked Lincoln, as his team set off. "I'm the only one risking his neck."
"We're starting here," said Mandy, walking towards the inside of the Mess Hall. "Any objections?"
"None at all, Mandy," said Dexter, nodding knowingly to his teammates.
Confession Cam: Dexter
"So, to stop Mandy getting another statue, all we need to do is stop her getting hurt? That can't be that hard, right?"
"Chef, move it so I can get the flag," snapped Mandy the second she walked into the kitchen, not even slowing down.
"You really think I'm going to allow that?" asked Chef, aiming his spaghetti launcher.
"Mandy, seriously, what are you doing?" asked Steven, raising his shield and blocking Chef's blast right as he fired at him.
"I'm doing my part in helping us finish the challenge," said Mandy, still walking while Chef attempted to get past Steven's shield. "I figure it's not my fault if I get hurt, it's yours. You're supposed to be protecting me."
"Still, you should at least let us plan out how to protect you," said Dexter.
"Why? How is my protection any concern of mine?" asked Mandy, opening the door to the fridge. "Would you hire a bodyguard, only to tell them how to protect you from a potential assassin?"
"…because it's your protection?" asked Ben.
"Right, which is your business, not mine," said Mandy, grabbing the flag and starting to leave, Chef still trying to get her.
"Damn it kid, pay attention to me," said Chef, firing another spaghetti blast, that Steven easily blocked.
"Why? We're done here," said Mandy, walking outside. "Come on, we're going to the shark water. Maybe there'll actually be a challenge there."
"Sorry Chef," said Jessica, as the rest of the team started following Mandy. "If it's any consolation, I still think you're intimidating."
"Aww, thanks kid," said Chef, smiling a little at Jessica's comment.
Meanwhile…
"Flag one, in the bag," said Jake, flying down in his dragon form. "Should we go for the shark one next? It'll probably be just as easy for me in this form."
"True, but we'd also be going right past Chef's to get there," said Kevin.
"Yeah, but the finish line is right in front of the Mess Hall, so it's not like it's a huge problem, right?" asked Jake.
"I supposed not," said Dipper. "Before we go though, did you injure yourself in any way up there?"
"Nah," said Jake. "The flag was just stuck in the side of the cliff. I just had to pull it out, and as a big strong dragon, that was no problem." As he said this, Jake winked suggestively at the girls on his team.
"And you wonder why you're our most hated member," said Kim. "So, we're doing the sharks next?"
"Let's go," said Mikey, leading the way across the beach.
Meanwhile…
"Lincoln, the rules didn't say anything about you needing to climb across there yourself," said Korra. "Just that you had to be the one to grab the flag."
"No, a true leader can show his team what he's capable of," said Lincoln, slowly making his way across the rope the flags were hanging on.
"Linc, buddy, I know you and Korra don't like each other much," said Jenny. "But seriously, you're on the same team, she's willing to help you."
"I am?" asked Korra, as Jenny punched her in the shoulder. "Oh, right. I am."
"I swear guys, I'm fine," said Lincoln, still inching his way to the flag. "I haven't even seen a shark yet."
"That's because they're talking to Eliza," said Danny. "Seriously, how does she do that? Has she got a power that allows her to talk to animals?"
"She hasn't said anything to me," said Annie.
"Maybe telling someone makes her lose the power?" suggested Arnold.
"Who's going to know?" asked Danny. "Like, the only people on the island are us, the other teams, Chris, and Chef."
"Yeah, but this show does air in quite a few countries," said Jenny. "That list includes Australia, Austria, the Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, France, Germany, Ireland…"
"Okay, I get the point," said Danny.
"I haven't even gotten to streaming services yet," said Jenny. "Also, there are probably people pirating the show, which means there's even more…"
"Yeah, yeah, okay, you've made your point," said Danny. "Still, I wonder what she's saying to them."
Down at the water…
"…and that's why she's still here," said Eliza. "I'm sorry, but there's not a lot we can do about her."
"You know what you promised us," said the shark. "Why should we give you more time, when your friend is in easy reach of us?"
"Like I said, the rules of the game…" started Eliza.
"GAME?!" snapped the shark. "You think this is some kind of game?!"
"Of course not," said Eliza, backing up from the shark. "I just meant…"
"Because I could really go for some human meat right about now," said the shark. "And unlike many of my kind, I don't have to wait for you in the water." As if to illustrate his point, the shark suddenly raised himself out of the water, revealing he had legs. "Come here human, Fang's hungry."
"Oh *beep*," said Eliza, backing up rapidly.
"Eliza!" called Danny, flying up and blasting Fang with his Ghost Ray. "Are you okay? What happened?"
"Apparently, the animals are getting more and more agitated about Mandy still being here," said Eliza. "We're gonna have to be more careful around them."
"And you know this because you can talk to animals?" asked Danny, causing Eliza's eyebrows to raise in alarm. "And if you can't tell us about it, don't say anything, we'll just assume without you confirming anything. That should be enough of a loophole, right?"
Eliza didn't say anything, figuring the less she confirmed the better, before realising what must happening. "Danny, look," she said, pointing back to Lincoln, who had a couple of sharks circling below him.
Danny looked up to see Lincoln had grabbed the flag, but now had a couple of hungry sharks below him. "Ah, crap," he said, running off towards Lincoln. "Linc, hang in there buddy."
"Like I have a choice right now," said Lincoln. "You know, I could just drop and win myself that Invincibility Statue…"
"Pretty sure you'll also be hospitalised," said Jenny. "We're getting you out of there, like it or not."
"…yeah, that's fair," said Lincoln, as one of the sharks leapt up to try and grab him.
"But don't hurt the sharks," said Eliza, rejoining the group.
"Um, Eliza, didn't one just try to eat you?" asked Danny.
"I'm an animal conservationist, I don't want them harmed," said Eliza. "You shouldn't have even hit the one attacking me."
Korra sighed in frustration. "Okay, I got this," she said. "One of you get ready to grab Lincoln, I'll deal with the sharks."
"I just said…" said Eliza, as Korra started raising two spheres of water up, between them containing the sharks that had just been circling Lincoln. Korra then started moving the spheres away from Lincoln, as Jenny flew in and grabbed Lincoln as quickly as she could.
"You okay there Lincoln?" asked Annie, as Lincoln was set down on the ground.
"Yeah…sure," said Lincoln. "But I think I might use some help next time."
"Wise move," said Arnold. "Come on, we've still got two flags to get."
As they were leaving, the other two teams arrived. "Oh no you don't," said Steven. "We're getting our flag first."
"Oh really?" said Jake, turning into his dragon form and flying straight out to the flags, grabbing his immediately. "Because it doesn't look like it from here."
"And why aren't you guys trying to stop him?" asked Mandy. "I have to focus on this, you should be holding up the other team."
"Mandy, we also have to keep you from getting hurt," said Steven, as Mandy made her way to the rope.
"Not my problem," said Mandy, as she started her crossing.
"At least let someone stop the sharks from…" started Tulip, as the sharks arrived to see Mandy, only to flee in terror. "…never mind."
"You really think I'm scared of some overgrown fish?" snapped Mandy, grabbing the flag. "Come on, we've got a challenge to finish." Mandy quickly climbed back to land, and began walking towards the cliff.
"Look, on the plus side, she isn't intentionally hurting herself for the Statue," said Steven, as the rest of the team followed her.
Meanwhile…
"Up there," said Lincoln, pointing to the two remaining flags. "How did they even get these up here? It's a sheer cliff face."
"Probably an intern or something," said Danny. "It really wouldn't surprise me if Chris sacrificed a few kids lives for the show."
Meanwhile…
"Hey, I resent that," said Chris. "I only sacrificed…wait, how many did we sacrifice for this challenge?"
"Three," said Chef, trying to hold back Jake with one hand. "Which, you know, kinda the definition of a few."
"Huh…maybe he has a point then," said Chris, going back to watching Team Golden Lion's progress.
Back with Team Golden Lion…
"Gotcha," said Lincoln, grabbing the flag. "Just one more, and…"
"Wait, what was that?" asked Danny, grabbing Lincoln's hand. "What's this?"
"Uh…" started Lincoln. "Look, don't be mad, but…back at the last challenge when Jenny grabbed me, she kinda grabbed me a little too hard, and now I have rope burn."
"…well, crap," said Danny, flying him back to the ground. "That could mean you're the most injured."
"Hey, as long as we finish first, who cares right?" asked Lincoln. "Besides, I'll have the Invincibility Statue, and isn't the whole point to stop Mandy getting it?"
"What's this about you getting the Statue?" demanded Korra as the two of them rejoined the team.
"It was Jenny, I swear," said Lincoln quickly, pointing at the robot.
"What do you…" started Jenny, as Danny showed the rest of the team Lincoln's hands. "Oh…oh no…"
"Look, it's no big guys, is it?" asked Lincoln. "Like, didn't we agree to help stop Mandy getting it?"
"You didn't," said Eliza. "Everyone else did."
"She scares me too, of course I agree with the principle of the thing," said Lincoln.
"Look, everyone settle down," said Arnold, getting between them. "What's done is done, and we still have a challenge to win."
"But do we really want Lincoln to be the one who gets the Chris of Invincibility?" asked Korra.
"Well, I suppose we could put make-up over it to cover it up…" started Arnold. "But that would take away…"
"Too late, already doing it," said Korra, grabbing Lincoln by the wrist.
"Hey, what the…" said Lincoln, as he was dragged away. "Let me go."
"Wait, Korra," called Arnold. "We need him for the challenge."
"Now what do we do?" asked Annie.
"I guess we figure out how to get past Chef ourselves," said Arnold, heading towards the Mess Hall.
Meanwhile…
"Hey, where are Golden Lion going?" asked Jessica. "And without Lincoln."
"Who cares?" said Mandy, already starting to climb the cliff. "I'm getting this last flag, feel free to stop me getting hurt if you can."
"You know me or Buttercup can just fly you up there, right?" asked Ben.
"Touch me and you're dead," said Mandy, still climbing.
"I'll take that to mean you want me to carry you," said Buttercup, grabbing Mandy off the rock ledge.
"It was a general threat," said Mandy, trying to reach back onto the cliff. "Let me go, or else…"
"Or else what?" demanded Buttercup. "As scary as you act, I know you can't do anything to me, so stop it."
Confession Cam: Mandy
"Buttercup's attitude is nearly as bad as mine. I like that. Maybe I can use it?"
"You're right," said Mandy. "Maybe I have been too harsh on…some of you."
"Some?" snapped Buttercup. "Look at what you did to that Elliott kid."
"Be honest, did you really expect him to win?" asked Mandy. "Half the people on this island have some kind of superpower, several have super-intelligence, or in general just good strategists. Don't you think I did him a kindness by not making him go through all this just to find out he wasn't good enough to win?"
"…I suppose that makes some sense…" said Buttercup after a moment's pause. "But still…hey, there's the flag."
"Excellent," said Mandy, grabbing it. "Give what I said some thought. Maybe I'll let you lose to me in the finale."
"Oh, you're so on," said Buttercup, as the two of them got back to the team. "Come on, we've gotta go win this challenge."
"Uh, Team Power Mouse has already finished," said Jessica.
"Oh, I guess we can come in second," said Buttercup.
"Is that Golden Lion coming out of the Mess Hall?" asked Steven.
"STEP ON IT GUYS!" yelled Buttercup, as the team took off to get to the finish as quickly as possible, but since the finish line was right outside the Mess Hall, all they could do was watch as Team Golden Lion crossed for second place.
"Hooray, not last," cheered Eliza, with the rest of her team.
"Not so fast," said Chris, marching up to them. "Where's Lincoln?"
"Hey guys, what did we miss?" asked Lincoln, as he and Korra rejoined the group. "Hey, is that the flag?"
"Indeed it is," said Chris. "Tell me: why is it in Arnold's hands instead of yours?"
"I…uh…forgot that was a rule," said Arnold apologetically.
"And the rest of your team?" asked Chris.
"We…uh…also forgot," said Jenny sheepishly.
"You're a robot, shouldn't you have like super memory processing power or something?" asked Danny.
"In any case, since Golden Lion cheated, they are now disqualified," said Chris. And what's this is Lincoln's hands?"
"Uh…" started Korra, as Chris wiped off the make-up.
"Rope burns, eh?" asked Chris. "You guys know I see all this stuff on the monitors, right? Like, I knew about this before Lincoln told the rest of you."
"We didn't think…" started Annie.
"No, you didn't," said Chris. "Well, see you at elimination Lions. Although…" Chris reached into his pocket, and grabbed out the Chris of Invincibility. "Lincoln gets this, given that he's actually got an injury."
"…well, at least Mandy doesn't have it," said Lincoln, as people started to disperse.
"You got lucky this time," said Mandy, with an air of menace around her. "But next time…watch out." Mandy left, leaving Lincoln somewhat shaken.
Later, at the elimination ceremony…
Confession Cam: Lincoln
"Well, if it wasn't for Korra dragging me away, the others wouldn't have broken the rules, so I'm voting for her. Then I can be the leader."
Confession Cam: Annie
"If Arnold hadn't grabbed the flag early, we wouldn't be in this mess."
"Campers, you know why you're here," said Chris, holding a plate of marshmallows. "You also know why I only have six marshmallows when there are seven of you. If you receive a marshmallow, you're safe. For now. If you do not, you will be taking a walk down the Dock of Shame, boarding the Boat of Losers, and you will never be coming back. Ever. The following players are safe." As each camper's name was read, Chris threw them a marshmallow. "Annie. Lincoln. Danny. Eliza. And Jenny." The camera cut to Korra and Arnold, both looking nervous. "Campers, there is only one marshmallow left. The camper who shall receive it is…" The camera cut rapidly between Korra and Arnold. "…Korra." The final marshmallow landed on her lap. "Sorry Arnold, you're out."
"Yeah, I thought this might happen," sighed Arnold. "Sorry guys for earlier. Good luck for the rest of the competition."
"See you around buddy," said Danny, as Arnold was led to the Boat of Losers.
"And another one bites the dust," said Chris. "Who will be dropping out next? Find out next time, right here, on Total. Drama. Island."
