CHAPTER 10

I open the door to find a middle aged man with crazy brown hair sticking out in all directions. On his nose lies a pair of colorful, bold glasses. His suit is covered in colorful bunnies. He turns to me and smiles.

"Hey there! What can I do for ya?"

"Um.." I'm about to explain my situation, when his eyes land on Keefe behind me.

"Oh Keefe! What's up!"

"Elwin, my man! Nothin much, just homework. How about you?"

"Same old same old. Although yesterday, someone came in with a pencil stuck in their ear!"

"HAHAHA wow how could that have happened!"

"No clue! Now who is this?" He asks, eyes landing on me.

I hide my face behind my hair. "Um.. I'm Sophie."

"Hey there Sophie! Are you new?"

"Yeah I just moved here."

"So mysterious," Keefe remarks.

I shoot him a look.

"What brings you to my office?" Elwin asks.

I hold up my arm and he grimaces.

"Yikes! How did that happen?"

I turn red. "I'd rather not say."

Keefe doesn't seem to have the same problem. "It was so cool! She was trying to light the bunsen burner with a lighter and accidently lit Ms. Galvin's trench coat on FIRE! Then she tried to pat it out with her BARE HANDS! It was epic!"

I roll my eyes. "Keefe, you weren't even there."
"I can envision it in my mind Foster."

My heart skips. Again with that nickname.

Elwin holds my hand up to the light. "Looks pretty brutal. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be third degree. Let's hope it's just first-degree."

He leads me over to a room, and Keefe follows. "Do you mind sitting on the cot over there?"

I sit down, and Keefe sits next to me.

"You know you don't need to be here, right? I can handle myself."

"Oh no doubt about that Foster. But see, this is my excuse not to go to class!" He replies, winking at me.

I blush.

"You know I can hear you Keefe!" Elwin says, walking into the room with an ointment.

"Oh c'mon Elwin, I thought we were tight!"

"Fine, but only if you help me out here."

Keefe jumps to his feet, saluting to Elwin. "At your service sir."

Together, they mix two creams and add the mixture into the ointment container. Elwin takes a little and rubs it onto the burn.

I wince.

"Does it sting?" Elwin asks.
"A little, but it's fine now."

He adds the rest of the ointment and tells me to rub it into the burn. Surprisingly, within five minutes, the pain is gone. I hold my hand up and admire it.

"Unfortunately, the scar will remain for a few days, but the pain should be gone."

I nod. "Wow! What did you use?"

He holds up a tube of the moisture. "It's this special ointment that I make using plants from my garden."

He hands the tube to me. "Apply this on the burn once in the morning and once at night everyday for the next five days."

"Thank you so much!"

"No problem. Now, there's only ten minutes left of the period, so you two can probably just head to study hall and work for the rest of the time."

He fishes a green slip out of his desk, signs it, and hands it to Keefe.

"Give this to your teacher on the way there, so they know where you've been."

"Gotcha! Thanks Elwin!" Keefe says, giving him a fist bump.

"Thanks!" I say.

"No problem you two."

We leave the office and head down a hallway.

"Okay, so we need to stop by the history wing so I can give this to Mrs. Belva. Hopefully she doesn't take too long admiring my hair."

I give him a look.

"No actually. I think she has a crush on me. I mean, who can blame her?" He says, gesturing to his face.

"Um ok? Well, we should probably hurry. The time on this pass says 11:29. I don't want the study hall teacher to think we're ditching!"

He looks at me. "Wow, we are so different."

We make our way over to this history wing, before stopping in front of a classroom.

Keefe walks in and heads to Mrs. Belva, handing her the green pass. I peek further into the room to see what his class is like. A familiar pair of teal eyes make contact with mine. Biana smiles at me, but then notices that I'm waiting for Keefe. Her face suddenly changes, as her eyes narrow. She looks almost annoyed?

That's weird.

"Okay thanks Mrs. Belva!"

"No problem Keefe!" The lady with chocolate brown hair in tight curls replies.

Keefe turns and walks towards me. He flashes me a quick smile and gives me a thumbs up. I turn to say bye to Biana, but she doesn't look my way.

After a few minutes of walking, we get to the room where we have study hall. The old man in the front looks up at us confused, but Keefe goes up to him and explains. The man nods and Keefe gestures to a seat in the back of the classroom. I follow him and sit down at the desk next to him. Immediately, I start to take out my math homework that I forgot to do last night.

"Um, what do you think you're doing?" Keefe asks.

"Math homework?"

"Uh no, study hall isn't for homework. It's for GamePigeon!" Keefe says, pulling out his phone.

"Keefe, you know we're not supposed to use our phones in class!"

He rolls his eyes at me. "Chill Foster. Just hide it behind your History textbook. I do this every study hall. It works like a charm."

Skeptically, I set up my textbook in the same way as his.

"So, what game should we play? Crazy 8? Basketball? Word Bites? Actually no, not Word Bites. You'd probably crush me at that one."

"I would. How about Mini Golf?"

"Sure!"

He hands his phone out to me to put in my number. I type it in and hit enter.

"Okay, perfect! Let's start!"

I'm able to get the first ball in the hole in 2 tries. He gets it in 3.

The next course is a little bit trickier, but I'm able to get it within 4 tries. He takes 3 again.

"Wow, looks like we're tied!" He whispers.

On the last course, I take 4 tries. Leaning over his shoulder, I look to see him play in action. After 3 tries, the ball is close to the hole. He positions the ball so that it goes in. But somehow, it misses and goes to the other side.

"Dang it," he says.

"Haha. It's ok, we can still tie!"

"Yeah true! At Least that way we both get bragging rights!"

He positions the ball once again, but the ball just barely misses the hole.

"NOO," Keefe exclaims.

I burst out laughing. "Take that!"

"Oh don't worry I will" a man's voice says.

"AHHH" Keefe and I both scream.

The teacher holds out his hand for our phones with a stern look on his face.

"You two can get these back afterschool at detention!"
