I know, I know- there wasn't any sign of Cavendish and Dakota in that last chapter. Don't worry, because we will be getting a heaping dose of Davendish in this next part!
Chapter 3: Falling in Love for the First Time
"We're Just Getting Started!" Zack sang along with Milo, Melissa and Mort, concluding their band's title song.
Near the stage, a digital scoreboard showed that Roger Doofenshmirtz's kickball team had already made it to the next round. Meanwhile, Phineas and Ferb's team were tied against a team from Jefferson County Middle School, led by Bradley. Lydia, who was pitching for Bradley's team, flung the kickball at the opposing kicker, Ferb.
The throw went wild, spinning off-center, only for Ferb to kick the ball at just the right moment. The kickball flew through the air toward Bradley, who reached up with this vine arm…
…only to have the ball fly right over the tip of the vine, causing Phineas and Ferb to win the game and move on to the next round.
Bradley groaned, marching up to Chad, who was stationed at third base.
"I thought you said I could make this arm grow on command!" Bradley poked Chad in the chest with his vine.
"I said it should grow on command," Chad defended. "Clearly the rules of the paranormal do not apply to time travel-related mishaps."
Applause and several cheers of approval came from the audience, drowning out Bradley's response as Just Getting Started prepared to play their next song, "Just Roll With It."
"Sometimes it looks like there is no solution," Zack began singing.
…
Cavendish sat in the passenger seat of the time vehicle, the blindfold still covering his eyes, listening to the ticking sound of the various clocks floating in the timestream.
Dakota hadn't said much while driving. When asked, Dakota refused to give anything away about where- or when- they were going for their date. So Cavendish sat in silence, listening to his partner hum the Zoo Song.
Eventually, Cavendish could hear the time vehicle exiting the time stream. "I need a little time to find the right parking spot," Dakota spoke up. "Keep your blindfold on until I tell you." Dakota eased into a parking spot before saying, "Okay, blindfolds off!"
Cavendish waited until Dakota had come to a complete stop and shut off the engine, then took off his blindfold and looked around.
The time vehicle was facing a construction site that looked vaguely familiar. Confused, Cavendish glanced behind. They were parked around the corner of the entrance to a nondescript building. There was a metal fence blocking the road, separating Cavendish and Dakota from the other buildings around the corner. And the first building right around the corner was…
…a burrito stand.
Not just any burrito stand, but one with a sign that said "Best Burrito" on the top of the stand.
Turning back to the front of the car, Cavendish looked at the dashboard. Seeing the year confirmed it.
"This is where you brought me the day we first met!" Cavendish exclaimed. "Don't tell me we're having burritos for dinner."
"Huh?" Dakota was staring intensely at the construction site. "No, no. Unless you want to. But I wouldn't dress this nice just for burritos."
"Yes you would!" Cavendish snapped.
Dakota turned to face Cavendish. "Alright, yes, I would dress up for burritos. But not for a first date." Dakota turned back toward the construction site. "Besides, we're not here for dinner. We're here for the show."
"What show?" Cavendish demanded.
"Just watch the construction site," Dakota insisted. "It'll start soon."
Silently fuming, Cavendish faced forward and waited.
Just as he was about to lose his patience, something strange happened that gave Cavendish a major case of deja vu:
A school bus with a rocket on the roof moved into the construction site at an alarming speed. Water flooded a large trench in the site, creating a makeshift river filled with tropical fish and dolphins, which the bus appeared to be surfing. The back door of the school bus was missing and there was one end of a rope attached to the rear of the bus. On the other end of the rope was a grappling hook. The grappling hook was attached to the missing back door of the bus and two little kids wearing life jackets rode the door like a sled.
Suddenly, a purple, beat up car with the words "Student Driver" painted on the sides crashed through the fence that separated Cavendish and Dakota from the burrito stand. The car then drove along the dirt next to the flooded trench.
As the school bus reached a fork in the construction site river, it floated away from the student driver's car. The car then drove off a ledge, flipping around as it landed on the other side of the bus.
Just then, the rocket on the bus let out a burst of speed, causing the bus to outpace the car. The bus then reached the end of the river, lifting off into the air over the fence that marked the end of the construction site. The two kids on the back door went airborne as well, causing the grappling hook to lose its grip.
Cavendish heard a sonic boom and the water in the river exploded upward.
Then, silence.
"What was that?" Cavendish asked.
"That," Dakota said. "Was our student time vehicle's time delineation gear, which we used to save those kids the day we met." Dakota hesitated, blushing slightly. "It was also the day I started to fall in love with you."
Cavendish looked at his partner in disbelief. "Why would this be the day you fell in love? Except for one brief moment of teamwork, all we did was argue!"
Dakota looked back at Cavendish. "It was that one moment of teamwork that showed me you could be more than a straight arrow rule follower. You are a straight arrow rule follower who occasionally plays by his own rules!" Dakota nudged Cavendish in the arm. "Besides, driving on water three times faster than local time was pretty romantic."
Cavendish and Dakota locked onto each other's eyes, their faces bright red.
"So, I'm hungry," Dakota broke the silence. "How about we head to our dinner reservation?"
Cavendish smiled. "That sounds lovely," he replied.
Dakota nodded and turned on the ignition. "Alright, blindfolds back on!"
"What? Why?" Cavendish demanded.
"What part of 'I want this date to be a surprise for you' did you not get?" Dakota asked.
"Fine," Cavendish sighed, tying the blindfold back under his spectacles.
While Cavendish was putting on his blindfold, Dakota opened the time portal. As he prepared to drive into the time stream, Dakota said "Hey, was it just me, or did those two kids riding the back door of the bus look a lot like Milo and that friend-girl of his?"
