Owen quietly texted his mom and Megan, "Teddy is heading down to the OR we'll be in touch soon."
Owen sat beside Teddy in pre op, "we'll see baby girl soon."
"We will," she tried to stay calm, they knew she was having a C-section that was planned, there was no surprise. She knew exactly what the surgery entailed and how routine it was, they had even watched a couple from the gallery along with residents to know what to expect and talk through it as a couple. It was her second major surgery in a few months but this was routine. They did 8-10 a week. The baby was transverse and hadn't turned there was no way for Teddy to deliver naturally.
"Don't get sick on me," Teddy tried to tease.
"How are you so calm," Owen asked.
Teddy held up her hand with the IV in it, "IV Ativan. Should we get you some?"
"No remember the last time I had an accidental stick in the OR," Owen asked.
"I do," Teddy replied, "I was pregnant with Allison."
"I'm okay," Owen said, "she's ready to meet us. "
"She is," Teddy agreed, "she's quiet today."
"Anxious," Owen said, "you haven't eaten."
"Soon," Teddy agreed, "you're ordering sushi as soon as were settled in the room."
"I will," Owen agreed.
They wheeled Teddy into the OR as Owen scrubbed. Once he was gowned and scrubbed they allowed him to hold her in position so the anesthesiologist coil put the spinal in her back. She felt the tap, tap, tap of the needles going into her back as the numb feeling floated up from her toes to her armpits. They laid her back on the OR table and moved her body into position. It was a strange feeling to know your body was moving but having no control of it. As soon as they were sure Teddy was numb Carina made her first cut with Jo ready to assist. With in minutes the baby girl was lifted out screaming and Owen stood to cut the cord.
"She's beautiful," Owen smiled as Jo dried off the baby and wrapped her in a towel before passing her to Owen.
"Mine," Teddy said seeing her baby girl.
Owen laid the baby on her chest supporting the little girl making sure she didn't fall with Teddy numbed.
"She's hungry," Teddy said.
"We'll help you feed her once your closed," Carina said.
"Just doing the tubal," Jo said, "are you sure Teddy?"
"Yes," Teddy replied, "I don't want to be pregnant again. We have three kids, two miracles. I'm not pushing my luck."
"If you're sure," Jo replied.
"Yes," Teddy replied, "it's all signed off. I'm certain of my decision. Two surprise pregnancies is enough."
"It is," Carina agreed.
Teddy turned her attention to her tiny daughter. She felt smaller than Teddy remembered Allison being. As Jo closed Carina moved to check over the baby, weighing and measuring her under Owen's protective glare.
"Hunt, stand down," Teddy directed, "she's okay."
"6 pounds 6 ounces," Carina said, "19 inches long. She's petite but healthy."
"Almost a pound and a half smaller than her sister," Teddy said, "Allison was 7 14.""
"After everything you've been through it's to be expected and she's healthy," Jo said, "perfect APGARS."
They finished up in the OR and Teddy was taken to recovery along with baby Danielle. Once they were settled in their hospital room Owen texted the family pictures of the baby.
"You okay," Owen asked Teddy watching as she fed the baby,
"I am," Teddy replied, "I'm still pretty numb."
"That will take a while," Owen replied, "and you're okay with just oral acetaminophen and ibuprofen. "
"I'll try it and if I need something more I'll ask," Teddy replied, "it's pretty standard and a high dose."
Teddy turned her focus back to the baby in her arms, bending her head to kiss and nuzzle the top of her head, inhaling her baby smell. She felt her world tunnel in like it had when Allison was born, it was just her and the baby, this little bundle of perfection in her arms. This time instead of being surprised by it she let it wash over her. Savouring her tiny newborn, noticing her perfection from her tiny fingers to her little folded ears and the soft downy fuzz on her head.
"Teddy," Owen whispered, breaking through her trance, "can I?"
Teddy nodded, "she's perfect."
"She is," Owen agreed gently lifting the baby, "Danielle I'm daddy. You're safe, pumpkin, I've got you. Mommy just needs to eat something and you're going to nap before your big brother and sister come visit."
"I might try to nap while she is," Teddy said, "I'm still not sure how it will work at home after the c-section. I can't nap when she does like I did with Allison."
"I'm home and you can take it easy," Owen assured, "my mom is coming and Megan. Caterina comes in a month."
"Six weeks," Teddy replied, "I pushed it back with her. She's got a big case and once we decided on the c-section I wanted it later. When I should be able to move around a bit more."
"Okay," Owen replied, "thats when I go back to work."
"Why she's coming for two weeks then," Teddy replied, "scheduling some help. She's been good with the older two."
"True," Owen agreed.
"She's beautiful," Teddy smiled, stroking the baby's cheek.
"She is," Owen agreed, "she looks like you."
"It's too soon to tell," Teddy shook her head, "but after everything she's been through with me she's here and she's healthy."
"She is," Owen agreed, "I'll send mom and Megan a few pictures you rest."
"Give her back first," Teddy said, "let her have some more skin to skin."
Owen laid the baby skin to skin on Teddy's chest and draped a blanket over them.
