Chapter 11
Upstairs, Wes paced the room impatiently while Sayori tried to comfort Janet.
"That small girl seriously thinks she can take on that monster?" He asked out loud. "Crazy bitch."
Sayori shot him a glare. She would've said something, but instead decided to tend to the mental state of Janet. Rubbing her back, Sayori tried to cheer Janet up. Her efforts were in vain, though. How the hell do you make a situation like this lighter?
"Freddy..." Janet said his name quietly.
Sayori's attention was torn away as she heard a loud crash from somewhere inside.
"Did you guys hear that?" Sayori asked.
Wes and Rick looked to Sayori.
"Hear what?" Rick asked.
He had been looking for things to use as barricades and defensive weapons. Inside the small room, he wasn't finding much.
"That crash." Sayori stated as she got to her feet. "Someone could be in trouble."
As she went to leave, Wes stopped her by placing his hand on her shoulder.
"Hang on." He told her. "You leave, and you'll be in danger."
Sayori grew frustrated with this guy.
"What makes you think that door will save you?" She asked, gesturing to the wooden door of the room. "Shut or open, it'll get in all the same."
Wes fell silent as he glanced at the door. Sayori was right.
"Whatever." He crossed his arms and got out of Sayori's way. "Don't lead that fucking thing back if it spots you."
Sayori rolled her eyes as she left the room. Approaching the staircase down to the main floor, Sayori descended.
Seeing the countless bodies, Sayori began to move over them in a way she wouldn't accidentally step on one.
Continuing towards the source of the sound she heard, Sayori found herself standing at the stairs to the basement.
Looking into the darkness below, she could barely make out the silhouette of someone dash by the bottom of the stairs.
"Is someone down there?" Sayori called out. She knew she saw something, and it wasn't Mark. Too slow, and too short. "I'm coming down."
Taking one step after the other, Sayori made it to the basement. Glancing around the room, she saw someone crouched in the corner of the room.
"Please, don't hurt me." A terrified voice called out.
"What?" Sayori was caught off guard by the request. "I'm not going to." She explained as she approached the person.
"It was down here." The voice said. Sayori could make out that it was a girl. "It was looking for me, then that other girl showed up. It... it spared her. I watched it dart up the stairs and attack that guy." Her voice quivered.
"What guy?"
"It came back and dragged his body off somewhere." She added. "It'll be back again. It's going to keep coming back!"
"It'll be fine." Sayori assured the girl. "What's your name?"
There were a few seconds of silence.
"Grace." She answered.
"Alright." Sayori said softly. "Why don't you-" she trailed off.
"Why don't I-"
"Shh." Sayori quietly hushed Grace.
Grace fell silent as she strained to hear whatever Sayori just heard.
"What is it?"
Sayori's face twisted to one of fear and worry.
"Hide!"
Sayori spotted a few wardrobes on the far side of the basement. Rushing to it, Sayori ripped it open. There were a few clothes inside, but more than enough space for Sayori to crawl inside.
Grace found her own hiding spot somewhere else. Where, Sayori didn't know.
Hearing thumps getting closer and closer, Sayori pressed herself as far as she could into the wardrobe. She could see outside through the crack in the doors, but she didn't dare make a sound.
The thumps got closer and closer.
"Why are we hiding?" Sayori heard Grace ask from somewhere in the dark.
"Shhh." Sayori quietly begged for her to shut up. Whatever she was hearing scared her. She'd never heard anything like this before.
It was almost as if something were-
A loud bang echoed throughout the basement, causing Sayori to jump. She hadn't made any noise, or at least she hoped she didn't.
She heard the thumps get closer until they were at the top of the stairs.
Grace could hear them now, too. She fell dead silent, could barely even hear her breathing.
To both of their dismay, the thumps began descending the stairs. Slowly.
Through the crack of the doors, Sayori saw a pure white wolf stalk into the basement. It wasn't a typical wolf. Instead, it seemed to be that of a wolf and person. It crawled in on all fours but suddenly pushed itself upright on it's hind legs.
Looking around the basement, the wolf sniffed the air before beginning it's search for a meal. It's yellow eyes glowed in the darkness of the basement.
As it grew closer to Sayori, she sucked in air and held it, fearful that it might hear her breathing.
Hearing a gasp from elsewhere in the basement drew the wolf's attention.
Upon seeing the creature, Grace let out a gasp. It might just be the last thing she did from the looks of it.
As the wolf grew closer, Grace saw one of the wardrobe doors slowly open.
Sayori wasn't sure what she was doing, but she knew she had to do something.
Slowly she stepped out of the wardrobe.
Glancing to make sure she wasn't spotted, Sayori quietly made her way to the stairs. Once there, Sayori moved up them.
Once at the top, Sayori turned around. She hadn't heard any screaming, which meant Grace was probably alright.
Taking in a breath of air, Sayori cursed herself for what she was about to do.
"Hey!"
The wolf snapped it's attention to Sayori.
Hearing it knock something over in it's rush to the stairs was all Sayori needed to hear before bolting.
Running through the livingroom and down one of the halls, Sayori pushed herself faster than she thought possible. She saved Grace, but now put herself in direct harm.
Yanking one of the doors open, Sayori ran inside and silently shut the door behind her. Placing her ear to the door, she heard the wolf rush by the room.
Waiting a few seconds to make sure it was gone, Sayori let out a sigh of relief.
However, that was quickly replaced.
"That wasn't Mark..." she said softly.
She had gotten a good look at Mark's wolf. His pitch black fur and yellow eyes dug their way into Sayori's long term memory.
Yet, this one was snow white.
"Natsuki...?"
Deciding to stay quiet, Sayori wiped the sweat from her forehead as she sat on the bed. The whole situation was getting to her.
Two of her friends were taken over by their wolves and were trying to slaughter whatever was in front of them. And she was just a human.
She felt sick. How the hell was she going to survive two starving werewolves until sunrise?
"This is so fucked..."
Heading over to the window, Sayori could see the dark silhouette of Mark's wolf. It was crouched down, unmoving. Nearly impossible to see, but Sayori could see it.
Noticing her reflection in the glass, Sayori gasped.
Her eyes. They were yellow.
"What the fuck?"
She blinked, but they didn't change back. She wasn't seeing things. Her eyes were yellow.
Sayori glanced at Mark, seeing his own yellow eyes peering at her. They looked to be the same, if not extremely similar.
"How?" She asked, her arms and hands beginning to shake. After what she'd seen, Sayori wasn't sure she'd even want this. Too late for that now.
Sayori began to hyperventilate. She didn't want to hurt anyone. She wasn't a monster.
"I wasn't bitten!" Sayori exclaimed. "How?!"
She tried to think of a single moment she may have gotten even the slightest cut but none came to mind. She was never cut or bitten.
Thinking harder and further back, she remembered how he transformed. And, right before that, how...
She kissed him.
That must've been it. In that brief, heated moment, Mark must've accidentally infected Sayori.
After all, it's through saliva getting into your system that infects you.
And a kiss seemed to be enough.
