Blue was getting sick of Zubat. The first one he fought was at least novel, a new Pokémon to test his skills against, but after his 50th Zubat he started getting ticked. Shellshocker had already evolved into a Wartortle, and he was sure that Wingstorm woudn't be too far behind on the evolution train. Still, he had hoped that he could see some variety in his opponents. He groaned a bit as he wiped some dust off his shoulder. The journey through the cave took a whole day, but he was finally out. The cool night air blew against his skin as he walked the trail to Cerulean. Luckily, there wasn't that much left to go. Just a straight path to the city. As he walked he took in the sights of the path. The moonlight reflected off the waters providing a rather calming aura for the night. There weren't many people around, and as such it was peaceful and quiet.
"What do you mean 'Entry Prohibited'? I'm a gym leader." Blue turned to look at the source of the annoyed, femininine voice. The glow of the moonlight made it hard to discern any of her features, but she had long hair flowing elegantly down her back and ending just below her waist. She appeared to be talking to some sort of a security guard.
The rather nervous guard responded to her critique. "Apologies Sabrina, but the Elite Four themselves said that you would need to attain champion status in order to enter this cave at the moment. What lies inside is too dangerous even for a gym leader."
"And yet they assigned you to guard it? What happens if whatever is inside attempts to leave this cave? How will you stop it?"
"It doesn't want to leave. If it did, it wouldn't have stayed in here as long as it has. Please, don't make this any harder than it has to be."
She turned around, frustrated at the turn of events. Nevertheless she did not wish to upset the elite 4, so she walked towards the river bank. Blue was surprised to see her pink eyes piercing through the darkness. They gave off the glare of someone who did not wish to be bothered. Blue hadn't even realized that he'd instincitvely stepped back until he tripped over a rock and fell on his butt. He watched, entranced, as the woman took a step onto the river between them and began walking along the water, a slight pink glow beneath her feet as she did so. She crossed the river as if it were a simple pathway and walked past the stunned trainer. After a moment, she stopped walking and turned to face him once more.
"Are you going to get up sometime, or do you intend to sit there like an idiot with your mouth hanging open?" she asked of the trainer who quickly scrambled to his feet.
"Sorry, ummm, so you wouldn't happen to be..."
"Yes, I am 'that' Sabrina." Her tone was quick and to the point.
"Right, ummm, I'm Blue." he held out his hand.
"The professor's grandson, what are you doing so far from Pallet?" Blue could hardly make it out due to the lack of lighting, but, was that a smile on her face?
"I'm travelling the region to challenge the Elite Four," he said with a bit of pride at being recognized.
"Don't think that being the professor's grandson guarantees your success," she said simply before turning to walk away.
"Wait, where are you going?" He ran after her a bit.
"Back to Cerulean, unless you were planning to camp out on the road." She turned her head back to him.
"Oh, right, yeah, I suppose I'll head to the city too." He chuckled a bit nervously, but she didn't seem to find that amusing. "Ummmmm, what are you doing so far from Saffron?"
"Am I not allowed to visit other cities in the region?" she asked a bit sarcastically.
"Well, I meant more what are you doing here at night, at that cave?" This conversation was not going anywhere as well as he hoped.
"None of your business, if a Gym leader can't enter, someone like you can't either," she spat the words out bitterly.
"All right, I won't push it then," he said meekly.
"They won't let the psychic gym leader deal with the psychic energy coming from that cave. The champion isn't even around and yet nothing can overturn his orders." She led Blue to the Pokécenter. The lights of the city allowed Blue to get a good look at the rest of Sabrina. Her long hair was a Raven black which contrasted with her pale skin. Her body was covered by a moderate red dress which stopped just below her waist. Her legs were covered by a pair of black leggings that sunk into her red and yellow knee high boots. For a moment, Blue hadn't realized that she was also wearing gloves, as they were barely whiter than her face which was currently scowling. "You can stop staring already," she said as she opened the door to the Pokécenter. Blue jumped a bit and walked in after her. Sabrina went off towards her room while Blue went to submit his Pokémon for healing.
"Can I please get a room as well, miss?" he asked as he handed her his Pokémon.
"Of course, always nice to get new trainers." She smiled and took the Pokémon for healing. Blue paid for the room and waited for her to bring him back his Pokémon. Once he got them back, he walked off towards the room and went to bed. He'd try to talk to Sabrina again in the morning.
That following morning Blue was eating breakfast in the lobby wondering if he'd spot Sabrina before she went back to Saffron. Indeed, she walked out around the time he was wrapping up her breakfast. Her outfit was about the same as before although her dress was now more of a violet than a red.
"You are aware that the gym opened up half an hour ago right?" Blue thought she sounded a bit annoyed that he was there again.
"So? I don't have to challenge her right away do I?" He tried sounding confident, but it was kind of hard with the way her eyes were boring into him. What's wrong with wanting to see her again?
"I suppose not, but you didn't have to delay your challenge just for me. After all, we met by chance. It's not like I'm going to journey alongside you in the future." She sat down across from him and used her psychic powers to get herself a serving of food and have the food come to her.
Once the food was on the table, Nurse Joy spoke up from behind the counter. "How many times do I have to tell you to just grab food like a normal person when you stay here!"
"I was having a conversation, besides, I only made a mess once."
"Once too many!" The nurse scolded, "You can do whatever you want in your gym, but don't do it here!"
She shrugged. "As you say."
And here I was afraid of her. Blue mused mentally.
"Do you want a reason to be afraid?" She asked with a sly smirk as she stared at him once more.
"Oh no!" He said as he realized what that statement implied.
"Yes, every thought, so behave," She chuckled as Blue's face shifted to abject horror. "Don't worry, I can only read one mind at a time." She started eating as if she didn't just drop a bombshell. Blue sputtered a bit as Sabrina chuckled. "I also only read minds when I'm having a conversation, or if someone is staring at me too long."
"Why?" he asked, confused.
"Just so I make sure whoever I'm talking to is being genuine, or in the case of staring, to make sure they aren't a pervert." She finished eating and got up. "Anyway, I should head back to Saffron City. If you ever need advice, you can call me here." She handed him a business card and walked off.
Blue was standing in the lobby of the Cerulean City gym with a look of determination on his face. "Let's do this," he said to himself as he picked up a Pokéball and walked through the entrance to a large swimming pool. Standing on the other end was a girl with orange hair wearing a two piece bikini with white on the sides and red down the center of both articles.
"Welcome to Cerulean Gym, my name is Misty and I shall be your opponent. As you can see, our arena shall be this massive swimming pool. Each of us will be allowed the use of two Pokémon. Are you ready to begin?"
"Absolutely." Blue smiled as he sent out Wingstorm. The Pidgey flew through the air and over the pool. Misty began by sending out her Staryu. The orange star shaped Pokémon floated along the surface of the water and aimed its center towards the flying type.
"Now, use Water Gun," Misty commanded as Staryu shot a blast of water at the Pidgey from the star in its center.
"Wingstorm, dodge it and use Gust!" Blue said as the Pidgey flew away from the blast and flapped its wings to blow air at the starfish. The air splashed into the pool below and knocked it right out of the water. "Now! Take it down with a tackle." The bird flew down and slammed directly into the Sea Star. "All right! Great job."
"Not so fast Blue, you don't get an Exeggutor till it evolves," Misty said with a sly grin as Wingstorm's body plinked off of Staryu.
"Let me guess, you used Harden?" Blue asked with a smirk of his own.
"Yep, you got it, now finish them with another Water Gun!" Misty commanded as Pidgey was at point blank range.
"Wingstorm, use Sand Attack." Blue was starting to feel a bit thankful that he had spent so much time in the caves of Mt. Moon as it had produced a rather nice coat of sand for Wingstorm to be covered by. The flapping of his wings caused said sand to cover Staryu's gem and lowered its accuracy such that it ended up missing a shot at point blank range. The Pidgey then continued slamming into the blinded Staryu until eventually it fell defeated. Misty recalled her defeated Pokémon, rather impressed with Blue's resourcefulness.
"I see, so that's why Sabrina said I'd have an interesting opponent this time. Clever move using the sand you got from Mt. Moon to blind my Staryu, but that trick won't work as easily against my next Pokémon." Misty took out her second Pokéball and threw it into the pool to reveal a Starmie.
"Fully evolved? Time for things to get interesting," Blue said with determination in his eyes.
