Chapter 9

I was a mess.

Hiding shit from Leah was the absolute last thing I wanted to do at this point. But, I had to hold on to blissful ignorance until her brother left. There was just too much going on.

Jacob letting me in on the whole fiasco about Sam fuckface Uley is killing me. And, I have no clue how Leah should or would react.

Her ex of four years, has been sleeping with her cousin. For lord knows how long.

I can't even fathom.

The prospect of picking up Seth on Saturday morning brought a welcome change, a brief respite from the strange occurrences that disrupts my routine. We embarked on the journey, leaving town for a while. The drive was a momentary escape, reminiscent of the recent trip to the city when I escorted Emmett for his flight.

Leah, dressed in black sweats paired with a lavender-colored sweatshirt, exuded an adorable charm. As I drove, she succumbed to the comfort of the ride, peacefully dozing off. The quiet hum of the car and the rhythmic road beneath us seemed to provide a brief reprieve from the events that had occurred since Sue's stroke.

We arrived at the airport, anticipation building as we awaited Leah's brother, Seth. The atmosphere was charged with emotion, and as Seth emerged from the arrival gate, there was an instantaneous connection. Leah's eyes welled up with tears as she rushed towards her brother, her arms outstretched. Seth, mirroring her sentiment, quickened his pace, and the siblings embraced in a heartfelt reunion.

Tears streamed down Leah's face as she held onto Seth, and he reciprocated the emotion. I stood by, observing the poignant moment between the siblings. It was a tearful yet wonderous reunion. I began grabbing his two gym bags, probably stuffed haphazardly with the things he'd think he needed. Placing them safely in the bed of my truck.

"Are we gonna go straight to Ma's?" Seth asked, curiosity flickering in his deep brown eyes.

Leah looked as if she considered the suggestion, her brown curls framing her face as she thought. "I was thinking maybe you'd wanna eat, get back to my place and unpack, unwind?" She went on to share that Paul, Rachel, and Embry had all visited their mother's place. The men were busy outside, tending to the flower beds, covering them with mulch, and raking. Meanwhile, Rachel had taken the initiative to cook breakfast for Sue and ensure she took her medication.

The idea of heading back to Leah's place to regroup seemed agreeable to all of us. It offered a semblance of normalcy and a chance to unwind before delving into any further plans or discussions.

"So," Seth started as we settled into the backseat leather interior of my truck.

"So?" Leah pressed, a hint of curiosity in her voice.

"I'm only gonna stay till Wednesday."

"Seth," she sighed, disappointment evident in her tone. "I was hoping you'd stay a bit longer."

"I'm sorry, I know, I know," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "There's a lot going on back home with the girls."

I began to pull away from the arrival zone of the airport. Making our way back to the highway.

Leah's expression softened, understanding dawning in her eyes. "How are they doing?"

Seth's face lit up at the mention of his daughter. "Miranda, ehh..." his voice trailed off, "but, good. Growing up too fast, though. Elena going on a drawing spree lately. The walls of the house are her new canvas."

Leah chuckled, the tension in the room easing. "Sounds like you're having your hands full."

"Always," Seth laughed. "But I wouldn't trade it for anything."

I watched them interact, feeling a warmth spread through me. Despite the challenges, moments like these reminded me of the importance of family and the strength we drew from each other.

Leah sighed again, but this time there was a small smile on her lips. "I just wish we had more time together."

"We'll make the most of the days we have," Seth promised, reaching out to squeeze her hand. "And I'll make sure to visit more often. Besides, it's not like I'm on another planet."

Leah laughed, a genuine sound that filled the room. "Fair enough. Just don't be a stranger, okay?"

"Never," Seth assured her. "Now, what's for dinner? I'm starving."

Leah rolled her eyes playfully. "Always thinking about food, aren't you?"

"Hey, a guy's gotta eat," Seth defended himself, grinning.

Seth arrived in town with the bright enthusiasm that always seemed to follow him wherever he went. As Leah's younger brother, his presence was a welcome distraction from the chaos that had enveloped our lives recently. His visit was a much-needed breath of fresh air.

From the moment Seth stepped into Leah's place, it was as if the heavy cloud that had hung over us lifted, if only temporarily. He gave his sister a bear hug, lifting her off the ground slightly and making her laugh—a sound that was always gratifying to hear.

I watched from the doorway, a smile creeping onto my face. Seth had always had that effect on people, his infectious energy spreading like wildfire. It was good to see Leah smile like that.

We had ordered pizza, and after wolfing down the slices, Leah figured it'd be a good idea to pass by Sue's.

..

.

Seth jumped out of my truck and bounded up the cement steps to Sue's front door. I stood by the truck while Leah followed behind him, pausing several feet back to observe the impending reunion. My hands crossed over my shoulders as I watched, anticipating Sue's silhouette to appear in the doorway.

"Hello?" Sue's voice called from the other side of the door.

"Yeah, ma, it's me!" Leah replied, stifling a giggle. I stared at her, appreciating her beauty. Her curvy figure hugged the fabric of her jeans elegantly. I was glad she was excited for this visit, although I felt a bit hesitant. Sue could be unpredictable at times.

"Who?" Sue's voice sounded again, this time in an abrasive tone.

I rolled my eyes.

"Your daughter, Leah!" Leah smacked her lips, stepping closer behind Seth.

"Leah?" Sue's voice repeated behind the door.

"Yes!" Leah almost shouted, her frustration evident.

It was quiet for a moment until we finally heard the locks unlatching.

It wafted open and she stood there in her long cardigan, with her long modest dress. Her arms crossed as she squinted for a while. Suddenly recognition flashed in her eyes as she brought her son in for a long and hard hug.

"Oh my good gracious in heaven, what a surprise! You'd think this oaf couldn't recognize my son?" She asked sort of delighted. "Well did you bring my granddaughter?" She questioned once she finally released him.

Here we go.

"No, Ma, she's back at home with Miranda."

Leah whispered something into Seth's ear, couldn't quite hear but it seemed she was reminding him that her reactions or speech may be a little off due to the stroke.

Sue strained to look over at Leah angrily. "You know I don't like surprises, Leah."

"Mom," Leah warned.

"Well, the house is a mess!" She shouted.

"It's clean, Ma, Rachel was just here earlier."

"Had I been in the nude!" Sue responded.

"Mom," Leah almost laughed.

I on the other hand audibly did. Just slightly.

No one noticed thankfully.

"You know what? We can just come back?" Seth suggested meekly.

"Wait, Seth," Leah begged. "Mom, the point is he's here, you've got more than enough time to catch up?"

Her mother shut the door in both of their faces. Horrified, Leah approached the door and was just about to yank it open.

I wish Leah would listen the first time, as far as Seth's suggestion to come back later or tomorrow, but I was remaining patient for the sake of my sanity. This is what we're deduced to. This is what Sue wants, Leah groveling at her feet. Someone to fight back and forth with.

Seth, being ever so thoughtful, intervened by tugging Leah by her hoodie. Despite Leah grumbling something inaudible, the expression on Seth's face communicated a shared understanding at the challenges of Sue's stroke. I was hoping for harmony and got turmoil instead.

What else should we have expected?

I was half excited. The prospect of avoiding the physical entry into the tumultuous house was a mixed blessing, leaving me relieved.

We all hopped into the vehicle, and I took the opportunity to give Leah a playful spank on the butt. All I wanted was to see her happy.

Her mother's behavior was becoming a real thorn in the side, and I didn't even want to glance over at the house as we pulled away.

The hairs of my neck stood, but I refused the urge to look at the damned house.

Thankfully, Seth had decided that it'd be best if they didn't head back over to Sue's. Leah was trying to convince him otherwise, but, he chose against it. Stating that his presence was only going to upset her unless he had Elena with him. Which was unfortunate. I felt bad for them both.

Such an angry hornet of a woman, that mother of theirs.

I missed my mom so much. I'd been thinking of her a lot more recently. Coming up on her death anniversary. I just want to talk to her. It'd be so nice to feel her arms around me. Comforting me and my siblings.

Over the next few days, Seth's visit was a series of simple, yet significant, moments that brought some semblance of normalcy back into our lives. They spent hours catching up, reminiscing about old times, and sharing stories that made Leah's eyes sparkle with nostalgia and joy. I joined them often, enjoying the lively conversations and the warmth of family.

One afternoon, we decided to take a hike to one of Leah and Seth's favorite childhood spots—a secluded clearing by a small, serene lake. The weather was perfect, with the sun shining brightly and a gentle breeze rustling the leaves. As we walked, Seth recounted tales of their childhood misadventures, each story more outrageous than the last. Leah's laughter echoed through the trees, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace.

When we reached the clearing, Seth pulled out an old, battered football from his backpack, insisting we have a game like the old days. Watching Leah and Seth play was a sight to behold. They moved with the ease and grace of people who knew each other inside out, their sibling bond evident in every pass and catch. I joined in, and for a few hours, it was as if all our worries had vanished.

Later, we sat by the lake, skipping stones and talking about everything and nothing. Seth asked about my relationship with Leah, teasing us both in that endearing, brotherly way. Leah leaned into me, her smile soft and content, and I felt a warmth spread through me that was familiar with Leah around.

In the evenings, we gathered around the fire pit in Leah's backyard, roasting marshmallows and talking late into the night. Seth shared his plans and dreams, and Leah listened with pride and encouragement. It was clear how much they meant to each other, and I felt honored to witness their bond.

On a sunny morning during Seth's visit we had all played a game of baseball. All the guys came over, I was even able to get Jasper and Emmett to join us. Emmett had been all smitten since his weekend away with the blonde. He kept spacing out, had me worried a couple times thinking the baseball would give him a good knock on the side of the head.

One night in particular was perfect for a bonfire. The air was cool but not too cold, the sky clear with stars twinkling brightly above. Leah's backyard was filled with the warm glow of the fire, crackling and sending sparks into the air. All of Leah's cousins had joined us that night and had settled into a loose circle around the fire, laughter and conversation blending with the sounds of the night.

Seth had started the fire earlier, showing off his "skills" with a confident grin. Leah watched him with an amused smile, shaking her head at his antics. Rachel, Paul, Jr, Claire, Embry, Jade, Jacob, Rebecca, and Solomon were scattered around, drinks in hand, faces lit up by the flames.

I leaned against a tree, a beer in my hand, watching as Leah and Seth bantered playfully. It was good to see Leah so relaxed, her usual tension replaced by genuine happiness. The firelight danced across her face, making her look even more beautiful.

"So, who's ready for some ghost stories?" Jacob suggested, his voice carrying a mischievous edge.

"Ghost stories? Really, Jacob?" Claire rolled her eyes but smiled. "We're not kids anymore."

"Speak for yourself," Jr said, taking a long swig of his beer. "I'm always up for a good scare."

"Well, if we're doing ghost stories, we need more drinks," Embry announced, heading to the cooler to grab another round. Jade followed, giggling like a schoolgirl.

Leah shook her head, laughing. "You guys are ridiculous."

"Hey, you're the one who invited us all here," Seth teased, nudging her. "You knew what you were getting into."

Rachel and Paul were deep in conversation, which seemed to be usual for them. Solomon was strumming a guitar softly, adding a musical backdrop to the evening. It was my first time meeting him, seemed very nice for Rebecca. She was rambunctious. Solomon evened her out, but she gave him an edge.

The drinks flowed freely, and soon everyone was feeling the effects. The laughter grew louder, the conversations more animated. Leah had made some s'mores, and the sticky sweetness added to the warmth of the fire.

"Alright, alright," Jacob called out, raising his hand to get everyone's attention. "Ghost story time."

"Who's going first?" Rebecca asked, settling back into her seat.

"I'll go," Solomon offered, setting his guitar aside. "This is a story my grandpa used to tell me."

The group fell silent, the only sounds being the crackling fire and the occasional hoot of an owl. Solomon's voice took on a spooky tone as he began his tale, weaving a story of the whispering woods and a ghostly figure that appeared on moonlit nights. The group hung on his every word, the fire casting eerie shadows that seemed to bring the story to life.

By the time Solomon finished, even the most skeptical among us had a shiver down their spine. I blamed it on the certain events that have surrounded me lately.

"Alright, that was pretty good," Claire admitted, a hint of fear in her eyes.

"Top that, anyone?" Solomon challenged with a grin.

Embry was about to start his story when a loud crack from the fire made us all jump. We burst into laughter, the tension broken.

Leah's laughter was infectious, and I found myself grinning at the sight of her so happy. Seth caught my eye and gave me a knowing nod, as if to say, "This is what it's all about."

As the night wore on, the stories got wilder, the drinks flowed more freely, and the bonds between us all felt stronger than ever. Leah nestled closer to me, her warmth a comfort against the chill of the night.

The fire burned down to embers, but the camaraderie and joy of the evening would linger long after the last flame had died out and we gathered inside. This was what family was about, and I was grateful to be a part of it.

As I walked into Leah's house, the warmth and familiarity of the place couldn't shake off the unease gnawing at me. The living room was cozy, filled with the laughter and chatter of family and friends. Leah was in the kitchen, preparing snacks with all the ladies.

I watched her for a moment in the doorway, her movements graceful and efficient, her laughter ringing out as she joked with her cousins. She seemed so happy, so at ease. It made the burden of what I knew even heavier.

Seth was in the living room, entertaining everyone with stories from back home. His presence was a comfort to Leah, and I could see the bond they shared. It was good to have him here, even if only for a short time.

"Hey, Ed, you want a beer?" Paul called out, waving a cold bottle in my direction.

"Yeah, sure," I replied, trying to shake off the gloom that had settled over me. I needed to focus on the here and now, not the storm that was brewing just beneath the surface.

As the night wore on, we all gathered around the TV. Jade had brought "Sin City," and we settled in nicely. Leah nestled next to me, her warmth a comfort against me.

I'd been a brick since Seth had been here. Leah had been so preoccupied with Seth, and after my little three-day weekend, which was smack dab in the midst of his arrival, I had gone back to work. I had worked from 3:30 AM to 10:30 AM, took a nap, then helped Leah and Seth set up for the night of the bonfire.

We'd been so busy lately. We didn't have much time to play. And no moving objects, or strange shadows appearing as of late. It felt normal. Being so near to her in this moment felt so real to me. Her scent was intoxicating. But, I had to be good.

"Could we do one more shot?!" Embry bellowed.

The whole room erupted.

"I'm gonna end up passin' out!" Rachel shouted in protest.

"Don't be a pussy!" Rebecca howled.

There was laughter and ruckus, everyone bounding for their drinks.

Jacob was there, too, his usual carefree demeanor masking the weight of the secret we shared. He caught my eye and gave me a slight nod, as if to say, "We'll get through this."

Seth stood up, raising his beer in a toast. "To family and friends," he said, his voice strong and clear. "And to making memories that last a lifetime."

"To family and friends," we echoed, raising our drinks.

Leah leaned into me, her head resting on my shoulder. "I'm so glad you're here," she whispered, her breath warm against my neck.

"Me too," I replied, kissing the top of her head.

Despite the joy around me, I couldn't shake the feeling of dread. The secret was like a ticking time bomb, and I knew it was only a matter of time before it exploded.

But, everyone's presence had brought a new energy to the house, a sense of family and unity that had been missing for a while.

"Man, I forgot how intense this movie is," Jade commented, her eyes glued to the screen as the movie progressed. Very intense. Gore. And imaginative.

"Yeah, it's a classic," Jacob agreed, leaning back into the couch, his usual carefree demeanor on full display. But I caught his eye, and for a brief second, the mask slipped. His big mouth got me involved in this. Earlier I had heard mention of Emily not being able to make it.

It's not my business.

Leah's laughter drew my attention back to her. She was radiant, her eyes sparkling with amusement. It was moments like these that made everything worthwhile. Despite the chaos that surrounded, we were each others safe haven.

As the credits rolled, we all stretched and began to clean up. Leah and I gathered the empty bottles and snack wrappers, while Seth helped Claire and Rachel tidy up the living room.

"That was fun," Leah said, her smile lighting up the room as she handed me a stack of plates to take to the kitchen.

"Yeah, it was," I replied, returning her smile. "We should do this more often."

"We should," she agreed, leaning in to give me a lingering kiss. "Thanks for helping out tonight."

"Always," I said, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me.

Everyone began to disperse, saying their goodbyes and heading off to their cars. Seth had gone inside, Leah and I dawdled by the dying fire, the silence between us heavy but comfortable.

"I love you," she said, looking up at me with those beautiful eyes.

"I love you too," I replied, pulling her into a tight embrace.

In that moment, I wished I could freeze time. To keep Leah in this bubble of happiness and warmth, away from the pain and betrayal that was sure to come.

But I knew it was impossible. The truth would come out, and when it did, I would be there for her. No matter what.

As we made our way back into the house, I resolved to make the most of the time we had. To cherish every moment and build as many happy memories as possible before the storm hit.

For now, Leah was happy. And that was all that mattered.

As Seth's visit drew to a close, I noticed a change in Leah. The weight of recent events still lingered, but she seemed lighter, more resilient. Seth had reminded her of who she was beyond the pain and chaos—an incredible woman with a fierce spirit and a loving heart.

The day Seth left, there were hugs and promises to visit again soon. We dropped him off at the airport and that was brutal for Leah. She was really going to miss him. Leah, with a bittersweet smile on her face.

"He's a good kid," I said softly.

"He is," Leah agreed, her eyes misty but bright. "I needed this."

"We both did," I replied, kissing her hand before pulling off.

..

.

Days had passed with enough normalcy that I didn't feel compelled to call a witch doctor.

Leah was currently dealing with enough. Her mother's sanity has been fleeting ever since the minor stroke. Seth's visit did nothing to help with that. If anything she was becoming a bit more erratic. Staying up at all hours according to the 'nosy' neighbor. Doing what? God only knows. I didn't want to know.

She didn't let anybody in the house to help for a couple of days after she found out that Seth had gone back to Boston. She'd nearly had a conniption according to Jacob. He and I had been conversing more often lately. Ever since he'd filled me in on the Sam and Emily drama it's like we'd made a pact. I felt sick half the time.

We were holding onto this information for nearly a week already and now never seemed like a good enough time. I was liable at this point.

Then Leah would look at me, and those eyes melted me each and every time.

It was a warm evening, the kind where the air felt thick. I found myself in Leah's kitchen, aimlessly cleaning up the remnants of the night's activities with dinner and such. Leah was in the living room, her face etched with irritation as she talked on the phone with her mother. The strain in her voice was evident, and it pained me to see her like this.

As she hung up, Leah walked into the kitchen, her eyes meeting mine.

"You don't wanna know," she said, her voice exhausted.

I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. I wanted to comfort her, but the weight of the thing was like a boulder on my chest.

"Thank you for being here, my love," Leah cooed softly, coming over to stand beside me. She reached out and took my hand, her touch sending waves of warmth through me.

"Always," I replied, squeezing her hand gently. "You know I'm here for you."

Her eyes softened.

I should just tell her right now. Fuck, I had told Jacob to pretend as if he hadn't heard anything for now. Really it was only up until Seth left. I wasn't expecting his absence to come as early as it had.

This was creeping up on me because it was a ridiculous piece of information that I had no right to hear, and somehow I feel like I am involved. The thought of telling her about Sam and Emily made my stomach churn. How could I add to her burden when she was already carrying so much?

In reality, she shouldn't give a shit. He was a horrendous asshole.

It'd be best if every aspect of that person needs to be far away from our energy.

I pulled her into a big hug, kissing her head. "Anything you need me to clean before I head up?

She smiled brightly at me. "Trying to stay on my good side, eh?"

"I try," I purred.

"I think we should head upstairs," she reached down to squeeze my ass, I flexed.

Missed opportunities are for fools.

We hadn't been able to get a moment alone lately, and why ruin it?

I won't stop this time. I took her into my arms, letting her melt against me. I began to peck kisses down her neck and back up to her earlobe.

Eventually, we traveled up the stairs to her bedroom. Pieces of clothing falling to the floor as we made our way. There her soft moans spurred me on, gripping her thigh as her leg began to travel up against my hip. I let my pants fall, my briefs outlining my desire for her as she kissed me chest. I let out a slow growl that had been rumbling in my chest.

I can't stop drinking in her body. My eyes never grew sore of that sight.

To have her in front of me was unreal. I'd needed her for so long.

She dropped to her knees, and I didn't even have to ask. Leah began to kiss me through the soft fabric separating her tantalizing mouth from my cock.

My hands ran through her hair as she gazed up at me with that adorable mischievous grin.

Her fingertips playing with the elastic of my briefs, and I began to feel lightheaded. She began to pull them down and I hear her soft satisfied moan. I know how teasing only gets us so far. It was almost painful for me to be without her touching me the way she knows how to.

It was nice having her brother here, but, it left little time for play.

And I have been dying to play.

Her tongue brushed against the tip. The breath I had been holding in had released in a loud huff. My whole body shook as her lips began to trickle up my shaft, running her thumb against the slick tip. Kissing back down my shaft, to my full and aching balls.

I felt so stiff.

Leah's majestic tongue ran right on the underside of my member, and had me saying silent prayers that I wouldn't finish early. And there the tip went, slipping into her mouth. Her hair was falling through and around my fingers in one hand, the other reached down to grasp her breast. Soft and warm against my palm.

"Oh God," I groaned.

She worked her hand around my balls. I watched her other hand trail down her body to her wet heat.

In order to hold my orgasm back, I regretfully pulled my cock out of her hot mouth. She pouted at me cutely. I got down to my knees and pushed my lips into hers.

On the fuzzy carpet beside her bed we began making out. Grinding my dick against her wet lips slowly. I had to taste her first. I needed to.

Leah's legs were already spread wide for me, I laid flat on my stomach, her thighs above my biceps. My head right where it needs to be. My vice grip around her sexy waist. I felt like I was floating. I could get drunk off of her.

I began rolling her hips against me, pushing my mouth down onto her needy mound. Letting her give me all of her orgasm. Reveling in the feelings she had me in. I'd been feasting for quite some time. She came three times. Her pussy lips were slightly swollen and pink, as well as her nub. So much tension needing to be released.

My fingers moved inside of her, treating her tender spot with so much love. Needing to see her convulse under my touch. Her breath hitched, and she arched her back, pressing herself closer to my hand and face.

"You feel incredible," I murmured, but I was struggling to keep an even tone in my voice. "I want to make you feel everything."

She moaned softly, her hands gripping my hair. "You do," she whispered. "Every time."

I watched her face, the way her eyes fluttered shut and her lips parted as I moved my fingers in and out, teasing and caressing her most sensitive spot. She was so beautiful, so perfect, and the sight of her lost in pleasure was intoxicating.

Her moans grew louder, her body trembling as I quickened my pace. "Just like that," she gasped. "Don't stop."

"I won't," I promised, my thumb brushing against her clit, sending a shiver through her entire body that shook me. "I've got you, baby."

Her hips bucked against my hand, her breaths coming in short, desperate pants. "Oh God," she cried out, her nails digging into my scalp. "I'm so close."

"Let go," I urged, my own need growing with every second. "I want to see you come again."

With a final thrust, she shattered, her body convulsing around my fingers as she came. Her cries of pleasure filled the room, and I held her close, kissing her pussy lightly, savoring the feel of her climaxing.

As she came down from her high, I moved up her body, my heart swelling with love. Our faces millimeters apart. "You are incredible," I whispered against her lips.

She smiled, her eyes still hazy with pleasure. "So are you," she replied, her voice soft and breathless. "Thank you."

"For what?" I asked, genuinely curious.

"For making me feel like this," she said, her fingers tracing lazy circles on my chest. "For loving me the way you do."

I kissed her again, slow and tender. "Always," I vowed. "Always."

Her hands pulled at my hair now.

"Lay on the bed, please baby," she hummed.

I obliged. Resting against the fuzzy comforter. Letting my body completely relax into the mattress as she climbed up on top of me. I began to shudder slightly.

The weight she laid on top of me was glorious. She felt so warm and cozy.

She rubbed against me a few times and I had the fleeting thought of the night I stopped by her house, and she had asked me to stay the night.

"Remember when you first got on top of me?" I asked suddenly.

Her slick movements stopped slightly. She tilted her head to the side and gave me a confused smirk. "The very first time?" She was probably wondering what the fuck I was on about. Her tits are right in front of my face. In fact I was softly stroking my fingers across them.

I was distracted. The movements were especially. But, I need to comfort her.

"No, this last time when we first hooked up?" I clarified.

Her head moved slightly, but she stayed in that same pose. Her hips stopped rocking.

After a beat I sighed, grasping her alluring, plump ass in my hands. Squeezing for good measure. "You asked me, does that feel good for you?"

Recollection was apparent in her eyes, though her expression didn't change much. "And?"

I was glaring at her now. "It was just the tone, like you doubted it? You know what you do to me."

"It'd been a long time, things change...I don't know..." Her thumb began tracing circles on my chest. "Didn't feel good enough."

"You are enough," I said basically before she had finished the sentence. "You are spectacular," I added excitedly. Curls were falling front of her face as she tried to look down. Immediately I slid my hands up her magnificent flesh and slinked her loose curls away. So I could see my baby. Kissing her, trying to emote it enough through the tenderness of it. I broke away for a moment to finish a statement. "Exceeding all expectations, if I even had any."

I was beyond ready.

She smiled, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "You really mean that?"

"Of course," I replied, my voice filled with sincerity. "Every touch, every kiss... it's like I'm falling for you all over again, everyday."

Her lips parted, a soft sigh escaping as she leaned into me. The warmth of her naked body against mine was intoxicating, and I felt a surge of desire flood through me. I wanted to make her feel as cherished and desired as she made me feel.

Her hands roamed over my chest, her touch gentle but insistent. I could feel the tension melting away from her as she began to believe my words. I moved to kiss her again, deeply, pouring every ounce of my feelings into that kiss. My hands caressed her back, pulling her closer, needing to feel every inch of her against me.

"I want you to know," I whispered against her lips, "that you're the only one who makes me feel this way. You're everything to me."

She moaned softly, her breath hitching as my hands explored her body, tracing the curves and contours that drove me wild. Her fingers tangled in my hair, pulling me closer, deepening the kiss.

I needed this opportunity to let this woman know how heavily she affects me. I can also tell how badly she craves me. Her being a sopping wet mess, meanwhile I'm hard as Tungsten.

We pulled away. The corner up her full lips turned upwards. As she proceeded to bite her lip, my dick twitched against her sweet heat.

"You spoil me," she whispered. "With everything, and love is included."

My hands fell from her face to spank her ass and grabbed a sweet handful. "Damn right," I responded. Her gorgeous eyes held my gaze. "I care about how you feel."

"I can't care too?" She asked hurriedly.

"Of course you can," I said softly, my grip on her ass firm but tender. I shrugged. I love this woman deeply. I don't ever want her feeling as though she isn't good enough. "It just seemed like the question you asked at that time was coming from a heavy place is all."

"It was," she responded despondently.

After a moment I said, "I want you to care. I want you to feel everything, to know that you're cherished. Just as much as I am by you."

Her eyes softened, and she leaned in closer, our foreheads touching. "I do care, more than you know. Sometimes it's just hard to show it the way I want to."

I smiled, brushing a stray curl from her face. "You show it perfectly," I assured her. "Every kiss, every touch... it all means so much to me. You mean so much to me."

She exhaled a shaky breath, her hands sliding up my chest and around my neck. "I love you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I love you too," I replied, my voice filled with emotion. "More than anything."

We kissed again, a slow and passionate kiss that conveyed all the feelings we couldn't put into words. My hands roamed her body, exploring every inch of her soft, smooth skin. I could feel her relaxing, her tension melting away as she let herself be vulnerable with me.

"You are everything to me," I murmured against her lips. "And I'll always make sure you know it."

Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, and she nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Thank you," she whispered. "For loving me like you do."

I shifted slightly, hands now over her soft thighs. "Can I ask you then?" I was entertained with the thought of what I'd like to do next. My rough palms tracing their way under her thighs, the warmth emanating from her body was apparent.

"What's with the third degree?" She was becoming a bit snappy now, that amused me.

I decided now would be a very good time.

So, I slipped into her with ease. Pushing her up and onto me, she let out a small gasp. Her face twisting with pleasure. Every inch throbbing inside of her. That beautiful tight pussy stretching and molding around the full length on my cock as I bury it into her slick core.

"Does that feel good for you?" I groaned with a shudder.

"Yes Edward," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.

My first instinct is to just pound the absolute shit out of her. But, I had to drag myself out slowly till the tip was out, and slowly work it back in. Her face was immaculate. Every time I'd pump inside her hole, a new wave of bliss shown across her features.

She reached back, grasping my balls. My hands moved down stroking and flicking her clit.

Her impatience with my slow pace was apparent.. Her hips began to roll against my lazy strokes, pushing aggressively against the hand that was plastered against her ass cheeks.

I was about ready to bust just from how eager she was. Always.

"You gonna take it from me?" I pressed with a grin.

"Yes," she grumbled, determined as she shook her hips again.

I relented against her grinding, letting my hands rub the beautiful peaks on her chest. Giving them all the care and attention that I could.

At first as we moved together, I could feel her hesitation melting away, replaced by a growing confidence. Her touch became bolder, her kisses more demanding. I matched her intensity, my own desire spiraling higher with every second.

Then I let Leah take the wheel, she bumped herself against me, her ass shaking. The impact reverberating against my balls. The sensations I felt in the moment were ethereal. The feel of her skin against mine was electric, sending shivers down my spine with every touch. I focused on the rhythm of our breathing, syncing it with our movements, trying to lose myself in the moment.

Those beautiful dark eyes staring back into mine.

"Does that feel good?" She asked, but, the way she said it made me feel like she knew the answer.

Her soft moans were music to my ears, encouraging me, spurring me on. I wanted to make this perfect for her, to show her how much she meant to me. Every sigh, every gasp, was a reminder of the connection we shared, a bond that went beyond the physical.

"My God, you're so tight," I was about ready to cry from the strain I felt.

Feels so good.

Her wanting pussy slamming down onto my cock.

Her eye contact had always been top tier.

A part of me was hyper-aware of every detail – the warmth of her body, the way her fingers dug into my back, the soft scent of her hair. I tried to stay present, to immerse myself in the sensations, but my mind would occasionally wander.

Does she feel as good as I do? The fleeting thoughts of self-doubt would creep in, but I pushed them aside, focusing instead on the way she responded to my touch. Her pleasure was my priority, and seeing her eyes close in ecstasy was all the reassurance I needed.

"Oh, Leah, you're so good, you're so good," I managed to grumble out.

"You feel so good," she breathed out heavily.

Emotions surged within me, a mix of love, desire, and a profound sense of vulnerability. This was more than just a physical act; it was an expression of everything I felt for her. I wanted to communicate my love, my need, my respect through every kiss, every caress.

We groaned into each others mouths. Our breaths catching slightly.

My hips bucked against hers, watching her breasts bounce and her legs shaking.

I pull out feeling my cock being close. I held her close to me, against me.

Not that I felt like my love didn't deserve my seed. But, because I didn't want it to be over yet. This was the time to feel bliss. And as long as I were in her arms, I felt okay.

The room was filled with our moans. Bouncing off of every surface.

I couldn't wait to fill her up again and again.

I want her to have my kids.

She's so beautiful.

I need this woman.

Forever.

My eyes stung with tears, anguish filled my heart just thinking slightly about how this woman had ever been hurt before.

Biting my lip hard I sunk myself deep into her again.

Oh fuck she feels so good.

Her eyes rolled back. My hands pulled at her gorgeous hair, really feeling the soft curls running through my fingers. She clutched my shoulders, rubbing herself harder against me. Her moans turning into cries of passion.

My brows furrowed really trying to concentrate. My hips bucking furiously, meeting her dripping entrance each time.

Her body is so soft.

Her pussy gripped me so tightly. Milking me. The audible soaked sounds our bodies made as they met were unbelievable. I could feel her juices trailing down my balls.

I huffed, almost in tears from how good this felt. "Come all over that dick, it belongs to you, Leah."

Leah's smile shown brightly. I couldn't help but do it back. Her soft hands landed right on either side of my neck, gripping it slightly.

Her eyes half-closed, watching my face seductively as she moved against me.

"Fuck, I love you so much, Edward," she muttered, letting out a low moan.

I let out a rough groan.

I was so close.

Thank God she has came.

"Sexy." I could feel the burning in my belly. My head tilted far back. "Fuck," I groaned. Spanking her ass over and over. "I love you too," I said, breathless.

"Come inside me, please," she griped, her nails stinging me slightly as she gave a rough squeeze.

Absolutely.

Fuck.

"Take it, baby," I immediately grunted.

"Let me," her voice could carry the most beautiful tone.

Mm.

My brain is melting.

Her grip around my neck grew tighter. My fingers had no choice but to dig into her hips as I hung on for dear life.

Our eyes met again, and she was riding me so good. I was done for. Oh God, I love her so much. Stroking me so hard, chasing the burning fire she feels as well. That aches throughout her body.

She kept her hands strong around my neck and came closer to me. Moaning in my face, riding me like a horse. It was magical for me.

I strained, and was letting out all sorts of deranged guttural noises. Her tongue slid across my lips, I obliged immediately cracking them open. The feeling of her warmth against me was incredible.

Watching her take pleasure in everything we did with each other was a sight to see indeed. "I'm gonna come inside you," I groaned, absolutely willing and able to do so.

She plunged her hips against me, crying out with each other. As we reached the peak of our passion, my thoughts were a jumble of sensations – the tightening in my muscles, the quickening of my breath, the overwhelming pleasure that consumed us both. In that final moment, everything else faded away, leaving only the two of us, lost in each other, connected in the most intimate way possible.

Later that night, we lay there, hearts pounding and bodies entwined, my thoughts shifted to a sense of deep gratitude. I held her close, feeling the steady rise and fall of her chest, and knew that this was where I belonged. And after Leah had fallen asleep, I found myself staring at the ceiling, my mind racing. I needed to find the right moment, the right words. But as each day passed, the window of opportunity seemed to close a little more.

I sighed and turned over, watching Leah sleep peacefully beside me. She deserved so much better than this, so much better than me for keeping anything from her. This was breaking me.

I needed to talk to Jacob again.

In the morning I'll swing by the shop and see what's up.

The phone ringing was the next thing I remembered. I hadn't even realized that I had drifted off to sleep. The clock read 11:27PM. Mustn't be good news now. I began to wipe the sleep from my eyes.

Leah was startled awake by the shrill phone. She answered haphazardly, almost dropping the receiver a good four to five times. I began to rub her nude back soothingly as she answered with shaky breath. Sure that whatever was going on wasn't going to be good.

"WHAT?" She gasped after a brief back and forth.

Something terrible had happened to Emily. We had to get to the hospital as soon as possible.

We threw on clothes in a rush, the air thick with anxiety and unspoken fears. Leah's hands were trembling as she threw on her shirt, her eyes wide with worry. I tried to keep my own panic in check, focusing on getting us out the door and to the hospital.

The drive was a blur. Leah was gripping the armrest tightly, her knuckles white. I kept glancing at her, wishing there was something I could say to make this better, but words felt inadequate.

When we arrived at the hospital, we were met by a flurry of activity. Nurses and doctors were moving swiftly, their faces set in grim determination. We found Jacob and everyone else in the waiting room, pacing back and forth, his face pale and drawn.

"Jake, what happened?" Leah asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jacob looked up, his eyes haunted glaring at us both. "Something happened to Emily. She's in surgery now."

Leah's hand flew to her mouth, stifling a sob. I wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close as she trembled. Jacob continued, his voice shaking.

"They found her near the road right outside of town, unconscious and bleeding. They're doing everything they can, but..." He trailed off, unable to finish the thought.

We sat in silence, the weight of the situation pressing down on us.

The air in the waiting room was thick with tension, every minute passing by with agonizing slowness. The harsh fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting an unflattering glow on our weary faces. Leah's tears continued to soak into my shirt, her body trembling against mine. I held her close, trying to provide what little comfort I could.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

I shoulda just told Jacob to go to Leah's job and tell her that day.

What the fuck was I thinking?

I could feel my own eyes burning with unshed tears. This was a nightmare, and there was nothing we could do but wait. Paul returned from the restroom, his face grim. Rachel and Jacob were still trying to fill in details where they could, their voices low and serious. Jr sat beside me, his leg bouncing nervously. Claire was on the phone, her voice strained as she updated Julissa on Emily's condition. Julissa was apparently out of state and completely freaking the fuck out.

Apparently Emily had suffered from some lacerations to her face. She had to undergo surgery. She was found on the side of the road just outside of town.

The sterile smell of antiseptic and the constant beeping of medical equipment filled the air, adding to the oppressive atmosphere. I couldn't shake the feeling of helplessness that had settled over me.

I was half expecting numb nuts Sam to show up and crash the fucking party.

I hated hospitals. My stomach felt cramped. Felt like we were sitting around and waiting for hours.

Finally, a doctor emerged and said Young family. His face etched with exhaustion. We all stood up, hearts pounding. Leah held my hand with such force it did hurt. I could take it.

First words out of his wrinkled mouth were.

"The baby is okay—"

I watched Leah's head jolt up, staring daggers into the doctor before panning her view to the rest of us.

Rachel and Claire mimicked Leah's confusion. All of us men from what I could tell smushed our lips together and didn't dare look at anyone besides the doctor. The doctor cleared his throat, shifting uncomfortably under our collective gaze.

"Baby?" she asked, shocked.

Oh fuck.

The doctor continued despite the outbursts. "We're doing everything we can for her. We stopped the bleeding, she is resting and stable now. We've also got her on an IV drip; she was really dehydrated as well. So, she should get rest first, the lacerations—" blah blah blah. I couldn't even focus anymore. I glanced over at Leah, whose stare was penetrating my very being at this point.

"So, how far along is she?" Claire's question cut through my mind sharply. Forcing me to turn my attention back to the Dr.

"The attending sonographer determined she is 24 weeks," he stated. "Which checks out."

"Oh my God," Rachel gasped.

The doctor's words hung in the air, each syllable a sharp dagger slicing through the thick tension that had settled over us. Leah's grip on my hand tightened painfully, her eyes wide with a mix of shock, confusion, and anger.

"Twenty-four weeks?" Leah echoed, her voice trembling. "And none of us knew?"

"Are the cops here yet?" Paul was asking now.

My head felt like it was going to explode.

"Outside her room."

"Can we talk to them?" Jr. probed.

"Up to them," the doctor responded.

"It's Sam's," Jacob blurted.

For FUCKS sake.

Not the time.

But, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy he said it. Even if it was a bit egregious. Relief flooded my body and mind.

"What?!" The girls all turned to Jacob immediately. He shrunk at the attention being directed towards him.

From what I could tell. None of the guys seemed phased by the news. My lips pursed thinking Jacob must've already opened his mouth to everyone except the person he should've told. His cousin. Leah.

The doctor, sensing the rising tension, cleared his throat again. "She's stable for now. Rest is the best thing for her at the moment."

"Can we see her?" Claire asked.

"Family only. One at a time," the doctor replied. "But try to keep it brief. She needs to rest."

Paul, still focused on the bigger picture, asked, "Can the police give us any information about what happened?"

"I can let them know you have questions," the doctor said, nodding before leaving us in the hallway.

"Leah," Rachel said softly, nudging her cousin into a forceful and nurturing embrace. Leah groaned into her cousin's shoulder and shook. I rubbed my palm against her back softly, hoping to provide any sense of comfort for her.

The silence was deafening as we all processed the news. Leah's anger was obvious, Rachel looked like she might cry as well. Jacob, Paul, and Jr. were rounding the corner with the MD to find the cops and speak with them. Claire was the first to break the silence.

"Maybe we should just focus on supporting her," she said softly. "This is a lot for all of us, but especially for her."

I coulda sworn I'd heard Leah mutter a 'got-damn bastard,' before she nodded reluctantly, her anger slowly giving way to concern. "Fuck, you're right. We need to be there for her."

I held her next as she pulled away from Rachel. "Are you alright?" I asked quietly.

She shook her head slightly, barely being able to look at me. Her eyes stained with tears already. I kissed her, pulling her towards me.

Look at me," I begged.

She finally did. Our foreheads touching lightly.

"Are you gonna be okay?"

Leah took a deep breath. "There's a lot going on."

It worried me that she seemed a bit flustered. Not really knowing what she was feeling, but it was emanating off of her.

The ladies began taking turns visiting her.

When it was Leah's turn to visit, she walked into the room slowly, her eyes softening at the sight of her cousin lying there with bloody gauze wrapped tightly around her face. She took a seat by the bed, gently taking her hand.

I walked back down the hall to wait for her anxiously.

I spotted the guys in the waiting room and felt a little shell shocked. My hand was trying to rub the sleep off of my face.

"Nice, Jacob," I stated plainly as I approached.

He shook his head quickly. "I know, I wasn't planning on doing that, but it was killing me."

Jr and Paul looked at me, then at Jacob.

My eyes shifted back to him.

"I did tell the guys," he stated. "Once I got a call on what happened I had to."

When Leah came back out, she looked calmer, more resolved. She turned to us, her eyes fierce with determination. "We'll make sure she and the baby are okay," she said firmly. "We're family," she shrugged, her voice cracking.

I nodded, feeling a dagger through my own heart by seeing the torn expression on her face, tears settling in her eyes.

"Yeah, we'll be there for her. No matter what," Jacob said softly.

The next few hours were a blur of making plans for support, and trying to process everything that had happened. Despite the chaos and uncertainty, one thing was clear: this was a shit show.

Most everyone had left, Jr had to get Claire home, she wasn't feeling too good. And, Jacob had to go into the valley to meet Julissa at the airport. Rachel was now in the room with Emily, Paul had stated that he was going to get some food for everyone. It was just Leah and I now in the lonely waiting room, a couple concerned people peppered throughout the wide room.

I followed Leah outside in the misty night air so she could call her mother.

It wasn't a good talk. Sue was sobbing into the phone about her niece. Asking if it was life threatening, almost having a conniption when finding out she's pregnant, and then Leah put the cherry on top and told her about Sam.

She shouldn't have said anything about it. I wouldn't have. Sue has this enate vibe to her, she's evil. She will eventually find ways to torture Leah with what was just expressed to her over the phone. She will feign concern and sorrow for now. For now.

Leah was beginning to pace again once we got back into the waiting room. We had barely spoken much, but, I could only imagine how she was feeling at the moment. Natural anger flowing through those veins. Knowing her, she would need to expel that venom soon. I figured I'd prepare myself and just be here for her.

I felt immense guilt because I knew beforehand thanks to Jacob, before anyone else did.

I had to tell her eventually. But, no time seemed like the best time to say anything. Her brother was just out here for a visit. With all the other stuff going on, I just didn't want this to be a catalyst to something worse.

I noticed footsteps approaching the hall to the waiting area and nurses station. Leah's expression made me feel as though it was someone we knew.

"What are you doing here?" Leah had spoken so quickly that I'd almost missed it.

Before long, her face completely changed. I had sprinted up and over to her, now coming in contact with the one person who we could've went without seeing tonight.

Sam.

She looked repulsed at Sam's presence. He shrunk back slightly when I approached behind my love.

Leah lurched forward with intensity. I was shoved back by her in the process, almost slamming into the cool bright walls of the ICU. I clutched the sleeve of her shirt, so, I was able to stop the first ferocious slap. But, Leah is a determined woman.

Her other hand mushed him right in the face, enough effort was behind it that he stumbled back. She gained enough leverage, jimmying out of my grip to land a loud smack that echoed the hall.

"You stupid, fucking, bitch!" Her teeth gritted, muffling her painful cries.

"Leah," I warned. Trying not to shout.

We were in a hospital. Not the smartest place to start a fight.

Just before one of the attending staff were about to take notice from down the hall, I held Leah from behind with such brute strength. Her options for revenge were slim at this point.

Arms by her side, unable to free herself she was growing angrier.

"Let go of me, Edward," she hissed, struggling against my grip. Her eyes were wild with anger and pain, a storm of emotions that had been building up for far too long.

"Leah, please," I whispered urgently. "Not now."

I will admit, Leah's temper had been unpredictable lately, and I was desperate to keep this situation from escalating further. There was too much chaos already with the freaky shit, and I wanted to rip her out of here before things got worse.

She doesn't need to speak to him.

Sam stood there, a mix of shock and fear on his face. He was clearly not expecting this level of aggression from Leah. I could see the confusion in his eyes, wondering what had triggered such an intense reaction.

"Why are you here, Sam?" I asked, trying to keep my voice calm and steady.

Alas, I already knew why, thanks to my conversation with Jacob a week back. I resisted the urge to smirk as Sam touched the spots where Leah had just hit him. I was seething mad though. This was the last thing I needed to happen tonight.

"I just... I wanted to make sure they were okay," Sam said, jaw clenched as he composed himself.

Leah's eyes blazed with fury. "How sweet," she mocked.

I slightly loosened my grip. She spun, now facing him, but I still held her firmly.

"You should talk to the cops," her voice cracking. "How do we know that wasn't you that did that to her face?" Every word was callous.

I tightened my grip. "Leah," my voice cut through the air abruptly.

Sam hesitated to speak, but his brows furrowed as he grimaced, looking between Leah and me.

The tension in the air was perceptible. I could feel Leah's anger vibrating through my hands as I held her arms behind her. The attending staff had definitely noticed now, and they were making their way toward us.

"I didn't do that shit, and I am here because I love her and wanted to see her," Sam's venom seeped through that entire sentence.

Leah shifted slightly, again. Thank God I couldn't see her face. I might be the one getting arrested if that were the case. My hands would wrap so perfectly around Sam's throat.

"Leah, we need to leave," I said softly, trying to guide her away from the scene.

One of us needs to be level headed here.

I'll save it in my memory bank for another time.

"No," she snapped, yanking again. "He needs to leave. Now."

The staff finally reached us, their expressions a mix of concern and authority. "Is everything okay here?" one of them asked, looking between the three of us.

I nodded, trying to defuse the situation. "Yes, we're just leaving."

Leah glared at Sam. "Seriously?" She said it so suddenly we all slightly jumped. "My cousin?"

I dug my fingers into her biceps. "We. Are. Leaving."

I could only imagine what she was feeling in this moment. There was just a lot going on. Worst possible timing ever.

Sam's hands went onto his hips as he stared down the hall. A tired and exasperated look permeated the crinkles in his face.

It almost seemed like he thought that if he held still long enough, Leah wouldn't be able to see him.

There was another beat.

One of the exhausted RNs were shifting her blue eyes between all of us wondering if maybe she oughta call security.

Leah bent forward slightly and bumped me back a bit. Her arms wrangled free from my grip for one shy moment. Enough time for her to strike one last boisterous SLAP!

It landed directly on his cheek, leaving a stinging red imprint.

The chaos escalated, the attending nurse and her co-workers witnessing what had just taken place were getting a move on with it. There were people just off the side in the waiting room perking their ear up as well, and I was mortified.

I snatched Leah's arms back up in a vice grip as the nurses panicked and sternly repeated, "You NEED to leave, ma'am!" above the ensuing argument.

I finally managed to guide her away without any other rouge hands swinging through the air. "Woman, let this one go," I said curtly. As we walked down the hall, her shoulders began to shake, and I realized she was crying.

"Leah," I said softly, "it's going to be okay."

Her sobs grew louder as we exited the hospital, and I pulled her into a tight embrace. "I don't want you to feel like this," I whispered. My arms embraced her body. Meeting perfectly together.

"Unreal," she muttered into my sweater.

I kissed the top of her head. Hair smelling like beautiful honeysuckle.

The night air stirred around us, rusting the trees and bushes.

"I'm sorry, I...seriously couldn't help it earlier," she said in reference to the physical violence, I'm sure of it. "I was upset, but, I am okay." She now was trying to compose herself. "I'm good."

"Good," I sighed.

We kissed before releasing one another.

"Please, try not to fight out in public darlin'-"

She raised her hands in surrender. "I'm good."

I smiled thinking of how ridiculous that scene was in there. "You've gotta show me that one move you did."

Leah laughed through her tears, the sound lightening the heavy mood. "What, the slap?"

"Yeah, it was impressive," I chuckled, trying to keep the moment light.

"What a shit show," she sighed.

"Leah, just so you know, before your brother came out. Jacob saw them together, and he told me," I paused to see how this was settling. She didn't seem surprised so I continued, "he was expecting you to be home to receive the news... but, it was me instead."

She sighed again, languidly. "I figured," she stated plainly. Her hands slapping against her jeans.

"How?" I smiled for some reason this all seemed funny to me.

This is some bull shit.

Her eyes widened comically, returning the smile. "You and the rest of the guys didn't really look all that surprised by the news of her pregnancy, I figured you all left the girls out of the conversation for whatever reason," she explained.

"I didn't know all the guys knew. Darlin', I just didn't want the trip with your brother being ruined—I don't know—it was never the right time," I reasoned.

Leah looked at me, her eyes kind and unwavering. "I get it," she said quietly. "My cousin has gotten saddled with a doozy of a man."

"I know," I said, pulling her close again.

She rested her head against my shoulder. "I'm gonna try to not think about it for a little bit, but, it's processing."

"Did the physical violence help?" I asked, half-joking.

"Only slightly," she replied with a faint smile.

"Hm," I tsked, shaking my head gently. "Just don't make a habit out of it."

She chuckled, the sound bringing a small sense of relief to the tension. "I'll try," she said softly.
