"What did you think, Max?" Roxanne asked me when I went to see her after the first act was over. She was still in her Can-Can Dancer costume.
I told her how much I enjoyed the show and more importantly seeing her. I told how great and hilarious she was, especially when she did the fish slapping dance during Fisch Schlapping Song, when she played one of the Laker Girls, when she danced during Knights of the Round Table and Find Your Grail and when she was one of the Can-Can Dancers. I told her I wished I could have acted in it, despite I never forgot that I had a great acting career while I was a high school and college student and I was pleased that Hayden still kept my recorded lines for God's scenes.
"You really were amazing, Roxanne," I told her. "So, did you have fun?"
"I sure did," she told me happily. "Another dream come true and it's thanks to you. Thanks to your encouragement and thanks to your time to help me rehearse. So, thank you, Max, for everyone."
"Well, I only just helped a bit," I said. "You're doing most of the amazing work yourself and in your own special way"
"Oh, don't be so modest, Max," she said. "You know I wouldn't have been able to do this if it weren't for you. Oh, and you surprised me when I heard you did the voiceover of God. You were very hilarious as him."
"Thanks," I said.
Then it was nearly time for Act Two to begin and Roxanne needed to get changed into her Knight Who Say Ni costume, so I told her 'Good show' again for the second act and I went to take my seat again.
I enjoyed the second act as much as the first act. Then something happened that I didn't expect to happen at all. After the part where King Arthur and his Knights threw the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch to kill the Killer Rabbit in the cave of Caerbannog, there came the part where there was a letter and three numbers. After the characters worked out that it was one of the audience seats, the actor who played Patsy approached me, made me stand up from my seat and revealed that I was the 'peasant' who had been sitting on the Holy Grail. Then I went on stage where King Arthur and his Knights awarded me an Arthur award for Best Peasant in Spoonerville. After I collected my Arthur award and received applause, from the cast and audience alike, for helping the cast find the Holy Grail, I took my seat again. While I watched the rest of the show, I wondered if the cast and crew did it on purpose as a way of thanking me for my time and effort to help with this amazing show. Even though no one said so, I viewed it that way and I still view it that way to this day.
"Congratulations, Max!" Roxanne cried, as I went to see her after the show finished. She was wearing her ordinary clothes. "Congratulations for your Arthur award."
"Thanks, Roxanne," I said. "And congratulations for your amazing performance for an amazing show."
"Thanks," she said.
"So, how does it feel now that you've acted in a full show for the first time in your life?" I asked.
"Oh, Max, it was just brilliant!" Roxanne screamed with delight. "I've always wanted to do this and now I've done it. But do you what I enjoyed about doing it the most?"
"What?" I asked.
"You being in the audience watching me," she told me. "I was focusing on my acting and my lines and my dances and my costumes and everything, but the fact that I knew you were in the audience watching me was the thing that helped me get through the show."
"Well, you were great, anyway. And I know you will still be great for the other thirteen days. Good show."
"Thanks, Max. See you later."
Then she went to her dorm room with her friends and I went home.
The show continued for another thirteen days and they were all sold out. One day, my dad, Sylvia and Hannah came to visit me and I told them about Roxanne performing in the show so they decided to go and see her. I managed to get them tickets for myself and my family for the night. They all enjoyed the show and I enjoyed seeing the show a second time and Sylvia managed to win an Arthur award for that night. And Roxanne was so happy that I saw her a second time and that my family came to see her themselves.
On the very last day of the college production show, there was Eric Idle himself! One of the actual Monty Pythons and the creator of the original Spamalot show! Not only was he in the audience, but he was the winner of the Arthur award that night.
Then when the show ended and the cast took their bows, Eric Idle joined them on stage and so did the rest of the other living Monty Python cast members – John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones – and they told us how much they enjoyed this production of Spamalot. And there were many college theatre critics and acting talent scouts that awarded this drama production many awards, including the Best College Theatre Production Award, the Best Leading Actor Award in A College Theatre Production to the actor who played King Arthur, the Best Leading Actress Award in A College Theatre Production for the actress who played the Lady of the Lake/Guinevere and the Best Director Award in A College Theatre Production for Hayden. They all deserved it.
Then Hayden thanked everyone for working very hard on this production, including me and that was why he brought me on stage along with everyone else who worked on this production as it was his way of giving everyone the praise they deserved. Then we all sang the reprise of Always Look On The Bright Side of Life, which was something I never thought I would do at all, let alone with Roxanne or the actual Monty Python troupe.
"Congratulations on fourteen successful nights," I said to Roxanne, as I walked her back to her dorm room.
"Thank you, Max," she said to me. "And thank you once again for everything – helping me fulfil my dream of acting, helping me with rehearse and coming to see me."
"You are worth it," I said. "How do you feel that you didn't get to play the Lady of the Lake?"
"Well, this is how I view it," Roxanne said. "Even though I didn't get to play her, I'm just still very grateful that Hayden cast me to be the understudy. More importantly, I'm still very grateful that I could star in this show and rehearsing with you was the best part of this amazing experience."
Those words made me feel very happy.
Then we reached her dorm room.
"Well, good night, Max," Roxanne said. "See you later."
"Good night, Roxanne," I said. "See you later."
Then she went into her dorm room while I went back to my house.
