AN: This is chapter 8. I know I said I would probably update yesterday, but exams are stressful. Well, not really but one exam in particular. I'm sorry for the title, I couldn't come up with anything better. Sorry again if this chapter is shorter than what you'd like. The next few chapters are gonna be like that. But, the quest is where it will start to get good, I promise. I hope you enjoy.
I don't own Percy Jackson and the Olympians. All credit goes to Rick Riordan.
Chapter 8: Reunion
After Annabeth left, the camp director, Mr. D I think, spoke up.
"Are you going to play or not?" I turned back to them and saw he stopped shuffling cards. "You do know how to play pinochle, don't you?"
I repressed a shudder, he was just so like Gabe. The drunken movements, bloodshot eyes, large circular figure, and the card games. I never payed attention to the games Gabe played with his buddies. I usually just stayed in my room so I never knew how to play.
"No sir." I responded.
"Youths today, no idea of the greatest games." he grumbled.
They explained the rules and how to play pinochle. Afterwards, Mr. D dealt each of us our cards. We started playing when a thought struck me.
"Mr D. That's your name right, sir? Is that short for something?" I asked.
"Careful girl." He sneered. "Names have power. You can't just say them willy-nilly. Get that into your head before one incinerates you. Bad enough I am confined here, but I also have to deal with disrespectful brats like you."
Mr. D waved his hand and a goblet appeared out of thin air. The light shimmered a little, then the cup suddenly filled up with red wine.
Now, I don't know if a monster can make things out of thin air,
"Mr. D, your restrictions." Chiron reminded him.
"Oh, sorry." He did not sound sorry in the slightest. "Old habits die hard. But I mean, come on father. You love to punish me. Not only do you place me here for half a century, you also inhibit me using my own creation."
I looked back at Grover to see him slightly nervous. He seemed just fine a few moments ago, but when we met Chiron & Mr. D, he went unusually quiet. I put all these together– the magic, wine, father, his own creation. Before I could stop myself, I blurted out, "You're Dionysus."
"Wow, I guess you aren't as oblivious as other campers. But who did you think I was? Aphrodite?"
I ignored him and looked at the first god I have ever met. "You're a god."
"Yes child." He sighed.
"A god." I repeated. "You."
"Why, you should learn some respect." He said, staring straight into my eyes like he could see my very being. I looked back without fear, but I saw the essence of the god of wine. Purple fires raze cities to the ground, crowds of people turning into dolphins or becoming insane– or even becoming insane dolphins, grape vines wrapping around monsters and squeezing the life out of them.
For the first time today, I realized that this little, pudgy cherub is a god and holds immense power.
"Well." Chiron interrupted before I could provoke him more. "Since you already know about the mythological world, I believe the orientation video is unnecessary."
"Wait." Mr D called out. "Let's finish this game first. Because I win" He revealed his cards. I didn't even notice the game was coming to a close.
"Not quite Mr. D." Chiron revealed his cards to show that he, in fact, won. "Let's go Percy, I will show you to your cabin."
Chiron started to stand up and walked out of the wheelchair. Instead of falling over, his lower half shimmered into one of a white stallion, just like when we ran from the Minotaur.
I followed him as he trotted throughout camp. At closer inspection, it was more dangerous in person. I mean, the climbing wall spews lava at the top, real molten lava. I listened as we went around camp. I looked back at the Big House and swear I saw something move the curtains in one of the upper floors. I pointed this out to Chiron. "Percy, there's not a single living thing up there." Though, he looked as if he had a theory that he didn't like.
We arrived at an area where 12 cabins were arranged in a sort of U configuration. They were labeled from numbers 1-12. Each of them looked very different. There was one that was entirely gold and shining brightly. There was also one that looked more like a doll house than a cabin. At the center was a hearth with a small girl, who looked about my age– like 9 years old, not 61– tending the fire.
"Percy." Chiron said. "For now, you will stay in Cabin 11 until your parent claims you."
He gestured towards a building with the number 11 plastered on top. It looked like the most cabin-like cabin in this whole camp.
We approached and at the porch of the cabin, Annabeth sat reading a book. I tried to see what she was reading, but my dyslexia didn't do me any favors. Then I realized the book wasn't even in English.
Before I could mull over my thoughts more, Annabeth stood. "Annabeth, after you show Percy's cabin, will you take the rest of the tour for me? I have a master archery class with the Apollo kids."
"Okay Chiron." She responded. With a nod, Chiron galloped away. Annabeth turned back to me and eyed me up and down, similar to what she did at the Big House.
"Come on, to your cabin." Annabeth knocked on the door and an older kid, about Annabeth's age, stuck his head out.
"Annabeth?" He asked, narrowing his eyes suspiciously, but the gleam told me he was just joking. "What is it?"
"Travis, just open the door." Travis fully opened the door and waved us inside. Inside was a bunch of kids crammed together in the tight space of the cabin.
"Everyone!" Travis yelled. "New camper, over here!"
Everyone stopped what they were doing to look at us.
"Determined or Undetermined?" someone asked. Before I could respond, Annabeth replied for me.
"Undetermined." She shouted.
A bunch of groans echoed throughout the room.
"Now, now." Said a voice. An older boy, who looked about 17, pushed his way to the front. "That's what we're here for."
He turned to me and greeted me. "I'm Luke and-" He locked eyes with me and froze.
The moment I saw him I was already frozen. A few more seconds passed of silence, then-
"Percy!""Luke!" We shouted simultaneously.
AN: There it is. Percy and Luke know each other. I already teased this in chapter 1 and also when Percy fought Mrs. Dodds. It shouldn't really be a surprise. I gotta be honest, writing this and the next dew chapters are gonna be a pain. There are basically not much that is gonna change at Percy's time at camp aside from the claiming. I am waiting till I get to write the quest because I have very special plans for that. Until then, please review.
