Authors Note: This is my first time writing anything that requires descriptiveness and creativity in like 2 years, never mind an actual story, so its gonna take a bit for me to remember how to write. This story is inspired by the concept behind the new suicide squad game, though it mostly just takes from the 'Justice league turned evil and oppressing the city' stuff, rather the rest of that game. I cannot promise that i will be very consistent in updating, both because I can be very busy with school, and because I can be really lazy, but I'll try to update at LEAST every couple months, but I hope to update more frequently. Even if I lose passion for this, or lose interest in trying to write, I refuse to let this be one of those unfinished stories. Any reviews please: IF I AM DOING A BAD JOB JUST TELL ME. I can take it.
Rated T, because Im not sure how dark this is going to be, I dont plan on making this that dark as far as superhero stories go, but i don't want to get in trouble.
Disclaimer: I don't own teen titans. I am stating this because all of the stories I've read had this and I'm not about to be the one without it.
"You got this B.." came a whisper from behind Beast Boy, quiet enough so that he could only hear it thanks to his enhanced hearing. Cyborg watched as Beast Boy nervously shuffled out of the main room, only to spot a fly re-enter immediately after.
Beast Boy had woken up far earlier than usual, so he and Cyborg had been playing gamestation for hours and the subject of their conversation had long moved beyond the contents of the game, till they had somehow found themselves arguing over the details of the gemstone in Raven's head. Questions like whether or not it could itch, or whether it held the same texture as an ordinary gem, and similar questions had become the main points of their morning discussion. The main question of dispute was on the question of whether the gem held the texture of a normal gemstone, and the potential repercussions on day to day life that such a detail could impact. They wanted to know, they needed to know. But they couldn't just ask Raven, even if she was willing to talk about it she would inevitably find their question childish and moronic and dismiss their plight, and they would never know. And before Cyborg could offer a solution Beast Boy had an idea.
Cyborg remembered how he felt while listening to Beast Boys scheme, how at first he wanted to just cut him off and remind him that he could just use his mechanical eye to analyse the gem from a distance, answering all of their questions, and then how he felt as he heard Beast Boy's plan, as he decided that he should, in fact, not tell Beast Boy of his alternate solution. Beast Boy's idea was relatively simple, wait till Raven arrives, leave the room and come back as a fly, land on her gem to know if it was an actual rock, then leave and report to Cyborg on his findings later. Beast Boy reasoned that Raven wouldn't even notice, because she'd be so caught up with her head in a book to notice a humble fly in the room.
It was dumb
It was a bad idea
It could only ever end one way.
And he couldn't wait to watch.
He had enthusiastically agreed to the green boy's plan, and when Raven had gotten up and sat down with her book as usual he had practically exploded with excitement at the inevitable outcome. Beast Boy waited to leave so it wouldn't seem suspicious. Cyborg had to restrain himself from cheering when the shapeshifter finally got up and headed towards the door to the hall, Beast Boy had stalled for so long that by now Robin had entered and was now leaning against the wall fiddling with his communicator after greeting everyone.
He couldn't risk staring at the green insect directly, or else he would risk giving it away too early. Despite what Beast Boy believed, even when reading Raven's senses were far more alert than Beast Boy seemed to give her credit for, and if she noticed Cyborg staring at a fly she would get suspicious, then she would notice it was green, then she would just yell at Beast Boy like normal. As funny as he always found it, it wasn't nearly as entertaining as what Cyborg had been hoping for. He instead opted to watch through his peripheral vision in his human eye, and the full view optics of his mechanical eye.
He observed tentatively as the little bug did a couple circuits around the room, then began its approach towards Raven. Cyborgs human parts tensed while his machine parts sparked internally, buzzing with anticipation as the insect made a beeline for the small, diamond shaped landing zone. The little fly was just a few inches away and….
THUD
Cyborg burst out laughing as Beast Boy, now human again, was suddenly launched across the room with his arms flailing just before he could land on Raven's head, and crashed into the wall.
Robin, still leaning against the wall, watched the events unfold with a small grin on his face, and chuckled to himself when Cyborgs laughter was cut off by Raven shooting him a glare.
"Whatever it is that you think you're doing, leave me out of it" the blue-cloaked empath warned.
Beastboy fell to his knees and pressed his hands together "Aw c'mon Rae… it's in the name of SCIENCE!" he pleaded.
She raised an eyebrow in response. "Any 'science' that involves you shouldn't concern me until it inevitably blows something up." She replied in her usual dry monotone. "And even then only if it blows something important up, who knows, maybe if YOU got blown up the shock might finally knock some sense into you".
Now it was Cyborg's turn to beg. "But Raven, you're the CRUX of our research!" He explained. "We NEED your cooperation!"
Raven just stared at the two, unamused, until Beast Boy once again found himself lifted into the air by Raven's powers.
"How about this Cyborg. YOU can research how fast it'll take ME to get BEAST BOY to change his mind about my involvement in your 'science'? " She offered.
Cyborg considered this proposal.
Before the half-robot could answer, the mechanical whoosh of the door could be heard.
"Glorious morning to you all , friends!" Starfire beamed as she floated in.
Everyone gave some form of reciprocative greeting to Starfire, except for Beast Boy, who was too busy being dropped on the floor. Robin was still fiddling with his communicator, though he now bore a frustrated expression on his face.
Noticing that nobody had eaten yet, Starfire flew towards the kitchen. "If it has not already been done, then I would like to make the speedy break this morning!".
The memory of Starfire's previously cooked meals caused Robin's heart, and stomach, to drop. A nervous expression became etched into Robin's features that he forced himself to hide. "Breakfast will have to wait Star, I actually had a mission for you and…..er…Raven!"
This turned everyone's heads toward Robin, it wasn't like him to only have a couple titans on a mission, or to assign a mission this early in the day without some kind of emergency situation, training sure, but never missions, and it seemed somewhat extreme of a measure to get out of eating one of Starfire's meals.
Robin's expression turned more serious. "I've been trying all morning to contact the Titans East, I was talking to Speedy about something when he suddenly stopped responding, now I can't get ahold of any of them"
"We can't leave the city unprotected when it could well be nothing, but in case there is something wrong I wanted to make it a two titan mission, just to be safe"
"So why send Starfire?" Cyborg smirked, seeing an opportunity. "The Titans East know me better, and with the T-car I could make it there and back three times as fast, and of course you don't need ME to cook for you guys when Star has so generously offered to cook for y'all…"
Robin's eyes widened at this. "Uh….YOU need to be here." Robin explained. "Because…the….security system is malfunctioning!"
Cyborg's eyebrow raised at this. "It is?"
"Um..yeah"
The largest Titan merely shrugged in response. "If you say so man, it seemed fine last night when I checked it."
"Well, you should check it again later, just to be safe" Robin retorted, shooting Cyborg a glare.
He turned to face Starfire and Raven. "Anyway, we aren't discussing the security system right now, if you two leave now, you'll be able to make it there and back by tomorrow morning."
The prospect of a "Girls Road Trip" seemed to excite Starfire to no end, she launched in the air doing loops and swooping around the room. Raven seemed less excited, her face betraying no emotion besides what could possibly be interpreted as boredom. But before she could ask why she had been selected, she had been pulled out of the room by her arm and on to their trip by an over-excited Tamaranean.
Robin started towards the door but found his path blocked by Cyborg and Beast Boy.
"I hope you didn't seriously send those two on a day long trip just to get out of Star's cooking, man." Cyborg stated with a more serious expression covering his face.
Robin returned the look. "I didn't, I really have been trying to contact them all morning, but nothing.. And to be honest I really didn't want you going, since if it turns out to be more than nothing then we'll need the T-car to get the rest of the team there as fast as possible."
This explanation seemed to satisfy Cyborg, whereas Beast Boy just looked at the boy wonder confused.
Robin sighed. "What don't you get Beast Boy?"
Beast Boy raised an eyebrow. "Dude, couldn't they all just be asleep?"
"Two things: one , for most people other than you, this would be considered way past too late to still be asleep, and two,. I lost contact with Speedy last night, I thought he might've just had a mission, so I hadn't thought anything of it, but the fact that nobody has responded since then feels like more than good enough a reason to be concerned"
Robin scowled to himself.
"It makes sense to check in, just in case"
"So that was a waste of a day" Raven groaned
It was now almost two in the morning, and the two female titans were now somberly beginning their journey home, walking from the outskirts of steel city. Raven was grumpy because the trip there had taken all day, only for them to arrive at the Titans East headquarters to discover that the protectors of steel city were all fine, and that the two kid speedsters of the team, Mas y Menos, had been trying to pull a prank on Aqualad, which, through circumstances that Raven still found confusing, had somehow triggered an EMP in the Titans East' base, hence why they had not been responding to Robin. It certainly didn't help that she had been traveling all day, and so was now even more tired than she would already usually be this late at night, and now she had to do the whole trip again. Of course, the fact that she suspected this whole 'mission' was just Robin's way to prevent the tower from Starfire's cooking was not lost on her, and while it was a noble cause, that didn't mean she wasn't going to hold him accountable for her current situation. The Titans East had been very apologetic and sympathetic for the two teenagers coming all this way for nothing, however this did little to better Raven's mood.
Since they hadn't taken flight yet and were currently walking, Starfire found it easy to glide slightly ahead of her cloaked friend.
"I must disagree, friend Raven!" she beamed. "We have had the pleasure of spending the day together, and we got to visit our friends the Titans of the East, and we learned that no harm has come to them!"
Starfire wasn't in nearly as foul of a mood as Raven, but was still somewhat unhappy, albeit for different reasons. After the Titans East had explained the situation to the pair, they had offered to let them stay at their tower for the night so that they could get some sleep and go home in the morning. Starfire was overjoyed at the prospect of having 'the sleepover with the friends from the right of the compass' but Raven had insisted on going home, and Starfire would not let her make the trip on her own.
"I must admit that I still do not understand why we cannot use the teleportation to get home"
Raven responded with a patient look. "I couldn't teleport us here this morning because teleporting this far takes a lot out of me, and I was already tired from patrol yesterday, I couldn't afford to use my strength up in case the Titans East really did need our help."
"And I can't teleport us home now because I'm too tired to even pull it off" she grumbled
She gave Starfire a sympathetic look
"We haven't gone too far from the Titans East tower yet, you don't have to come with me if you're too tired. I'd get it if you wanted to go back and sleep, the only reason why I'm choosing to go now is just because I want to go home now"
Starfire shook her head enthusiastically at this. "Unthinkable Raven, I cannot allow you to go on your own. You cannot have a the girls road trip with only one girl, you need at least two"
The half-demon gave a small smile at her friends innocent and loyal reasoning.
The two finally took flight, Starfire swooping around in different directions as she went, constantly changing speed, while Raven maintained a constant speed and a smoother, more direct flight path. They stayed close to the ground at first, but they both knew that they would go much higher once they were out of steel city. They flew in a straight line for a while, only making a few necessary turns to navigate the city outskirts, until something caught Raven's eye. If it weren't so dark she probably would have missed it. She slowed down and came to a stop, lowering herself to the ground before calling out to Starfire to get her to stop for a moment. She approached the object that had grabbed her attention to get a closer look.
It was a flatscreen TV in a window, she was mildly surprised to see one like this since she hadn't thought that was still even a thing anymore. It was on, with the lower half of the screen taken up by a rectangular banner stating 'Breaking News!', these kinds of window tv's wouldn't usually be on this late, unless it was for something truly serious, and as Raven finally got a good look at the image displayed on the screen, that serious topic became clear. Starfire gasped as she approached and saw what was on the television screen.
It was Jump City, but with smoke pouring out from every other building, a few large fires raging high enough to be seen from the aerial shot displayed on the news. Large flying objects could be seen flying over the city, but the camera quality wasn't good enough to identify what they were. Both Raven and Starfire became focused on something that could be seen in the back of the shot; Titans Tower, with smoke billowing out of a small fiery hole like blood gushing from a wound. The hole was around where they both knew the ops room to be.
Raven's now widened eyes remained glued to the screen, she felt frozen in place, felt like it was all in her imagination until she was snapped out of it by a black aura encasing the TV and shattering it. She hadn't meant to do that. Shaking off her shock, she whirled to face her alien friend, who had now turned to face Raven, eyes wide with desperation.
"Are you certain that you do not possess the capability to transport us home at this time?" Starfire pleaded, urgency biting into her words.
Raven closed her eyes, desperately searching in vain for strength she knew she would not find. Her hands closed into fists as she concentrated hard, calling on all the power she could muster. Her fists became enveloped in the glow of a black aura. But just as soon as it had appeared, her powers dissipated from her hands, she opened her eyes and shot Starfire an apologetic look. Her empathic powers meant that she could feel just how concerned and scared her teammate was, and in truth, Raven was just as worried. She noticed that her hands were lightly trembling, so she hid them within her cloak; if Starfire saw just how concerned she was, it would only serve to make the exceptionally emotional alien even more upset. The empath couldn't read minds, but she didn't need to in order to know what Starfire was thinking; Raven was thinking about the same thing, their friends. The horrifying image of the tower bleeding smoke remained burned in her minds eye, and she could tell just by looking at her that Starfire was having a similar experience.
"I'm sure, we'll just have to fly" Raven stated, failing to hide the worry in her voice.
Starfire shot into the air, with Raven following close behind, but just as soon as they had made it into the sky they were stopped dead in their tracks by the deafening, yet unmistakable sound of an explosion came from behind them. The two female teens spun to see smoke coming from the place they had just been, the Titans East tower. Raven almost fell out of the air from the sheer despair she could feel emanating from Starfire
Raven ever so slightly turned her head so she could look at Starfire.
"Go, I'll check that the Titans East are ok and then I'll catch up with you"
Starfire simply nodded in response, a grim expression on her face, before rocketing away in the direction of Jump City.
Raven watched her leave for a moment before turning and flying in the direction of the Titans East' headquarters. She needed them to be ok so she could leave and help with whatever was going on, and, more importantly to her, so she could check on her friends. She just hoped that nothing bad had happened to them.
