Ranma ½

A Scary Thought:

What happened last time: Things took a bad turn as Herb's unfortunate curse was revealed to the leader of the Fox Clan of the Musk, and now finds himself the target.

Author Note: I think for my sanity, I'm going to change my writing style a bit from here on to better match my other stories. In particular thoughts will be marked in single quote like 'this'. Constantly switching styles is rather annoying and I keep forgetting which style to use so this should make it easier.

Chapter 54

Kasumi awoke slowly, uncharacteristically feeling the strong desire simply to ignore the day and sulk in bed. However, hard ingrained habits refused to be silenced and forced her to finally open her eyes and get up. Sitting on the side of her bed she took notice of Shampoo still sleeping. She regarded her a moment curiously before easing herself to a standing position. She looked to the bathroom, but after a moment dismissed the consideration and grabbed up a nearby robe to clothe herself and headed out onto the deck.

It was a bright morning with clear skies, but it brought Kasumi little cheer. She sighed and sat down on a bench to look out at the sky and attempt to clear her head. She barely had one minute of peace before noticing Shampoo's mother had appeared before her.

"Um, hello," Kasumi lamely greeted, wondering if the older woman had deliberately snuck up to her, or if she had simply been that distracted to not notice her approach.

"I wish for you to show me your healing technique," Comb said plainly.

"Uh... okay, but there is nothing..." Kasumi started to say before Comb produced a knife. Before Kasumi could say anything more, the amazon sharply drew the blade of the knife over her forearm before thrusting the now wounded limb into Kasumi's face. Kasumi cringed, but unable to think of any words to say decided to simply begin the healing process.

Comb watched silently but intensely as Kasumi set about sealing the wound. It was not deep so took only a minute and once complete, the amazon examined it and nodded slightly. "I see, guided healing, almost like using a suture. Requires a fair bit greater chi control than usual, but effective at reducing scarring."

"Uh... yes. I'm still learning it myself. Master Dhalsim was considerably more advanced, even able to do limited regeneration."

Comb nodded. "I see. I will have to experiment with this myself. Side effects? Considerations?"

"Uh... none that I know of, and not really, at least not any more than simple healing," Kasumi answered.

"Hmh," Comb huffed with another nod before turning her attention behind her. Kasumi likewise followed her gaze to notice Cologne was waiting at the corner patiently. Comb walked over, mumbled something Kasumi couldn't quite catch before departing, but it was enough to put a smile on Cologne's face.

The elder walked over and hopped onto the bench next to Kasumi. "I would like to say you have gained her approval... but that would be a lie. However, she apparently will tolerate you."

"Oh," Kasumi replied, looking down.

"Do not let it trouble you. She merely opposes you on ideological grounds more than anything. With time that will pass I am sure. She can be stubborn but ultimately I believe you have little to worry about from her. Brush seems to like you well enough."

"I suppose that is something," Kasumi said with a sigh.

"Yes, well..." Cologne replied before producing a small marked stone and handing it to Kasumi. "Something for you."

Kasumi accepted the stone and examined it curiously. "What is it?"

"Call it an option, one to be used if things go... particularly wrong. Should you find yourself at odds with the village, use it."

"How?"

Cologne smiled. "A simple drop of blood will activate it, yours, Ukyo's, Shampoo's or Frost's. Frost can tell you more about the stone I'm sure, but ask her when I leave. I'd prefer other ears not potentially overhear," Cologne explained. "Just to be clear, you're not committed by using the stone, it will merely enable the option."

"I see," Kasumi said before putting the stone in her robe's pocket. "Do you think-"

"No," Cologne cut in to answer. "But, I'm always one to plan ahead, just in case." Cologne looked to the sliding door to Kasumi's room. "Shampoo still asleep?"

"Yes, it is rather unusual for her actually... at least since-"

"Since she gained her new abilities," Cologne concluded for Kasumi to which she nodded. "She is likely spiritually exhausted. Do not fear, it is normal, and she'll awaken soon. Even we unawakened occasionally become so exhausted, it just is for a shorter duration and thus is dismissed as normal sleep. For those with spiritual power though, the exhaustion is more noticeable as it lasts substantially longer. I, of course, have no firsthand knowledge of such, but So Pu can sleep for up to a week when it happens to her, but it is rare. All the recent excitement has probably just caught up to her."

"A week?"

"Yes, but don't fear, Shampoo is a long way from reaching that duration. She'll likely just need to sleep in on occasion. I'm told it is the one time that spiritually awakened individuals experience something akin to true sleep again. She can be roused out of it, but preferably let her rest as they may simply slip back into it for the full duration again if not allowed to run its course."

"I'll remember that."

Cologne nodded before once more changing topics. "There is a related matter I wish to talk to you about, something that your current situation may actually help with."

"Oh?"

"Yes, a side benefit to marrying Herb," Cologne began.

Elsewhere at the San Cheng Huang, Frost was awakened with a repeating booming. Only after several seconds to awake and collect herself did she realize two things: One, she had a monster migraine, and two, that booming was just a light tapping on the door to the room. Moaning, she sat up, and quickly realized a third thing, that she was not in her typical sleeping residence.

About that moment, Siren let herself in and smiled at the young Magus. "Headache?" Frost mutely nodded and was handed a glass of water and a pair of pills which she consumed without question. "You were never good with lots of excitement."

Frost moaned in response before putting the now empty glass aside. "Did someone slip me some alcohol?"

"Oh, probably," Siren answered before another figure entered the room, that of Jasmine. "Ah yes, I don't think you've been formally introduced. Frost, this is Jasmine, Grand Magus of the 12th circle, and your new overseer." Jasmine slightly bowed to Frost before Siren continued. "Well, I'll leave you two to discuss matters."

Siren saw herself out, closing the door behind her as Jasmine took a seat. "So then," the Grand Magus began, "what do you know of the responsibilities of an Archmage?"

"Uh... not much," Frost admitted.

Jasmine nodded before raising a finger in count. "One, teach appropriately selected mages. Two, conduct special tasks assigned to you by the mage's council. Three, aid your Grand Magus overseer as required," Jasmine finished. "Officially you are now an Archmage, but that does not mean I feel you are suitable to conduct those duties yet. As such, I give you a week to put your affairs in order here and report to me where you will have to pass a series of tests so that I am confident you won't get yourself killed in an embarrassing fashion by the first task set to you."

"A week... how long-"

"Plan for a prolonged stay," Jasmine cautioned her. "My tests are not simple. From what Siren has reported of you, you should be able to handle many of the tests easily, but others will take you far longer to complete successfully. That is typical however. I have yet to have an Archmage under me complete all the tests in short order. There are always a few areas they are deficient in."

"Uh, right," Frost replied, looking away nervously.

"Do realize I am a supervisor, not an instructor, and while I do occasionally request assistance in tasks, that is infrequent, not even once a year normally. Likewise you can expect the council to rarely call on you, but when they do it can be at terribly inconvenient times. As for students, we'll get to those when I feel you are ready."

"Of course... I'm not sure how I'd even go about teaching someone," Frost admitted.

"Oh don't worry, we'll address that," Jasmine said as she stood up. "I'll be having one of my other Archmages stay to assist you and bring you to me. I do believe Grenda is the one up for the duty... yes. DON'T make me come collect you."

"Right!" Frost quickly replied.

Jasmine nodded and turned to the door. "Till then," she said as a simple goodbye and headed out.

Closing the door behind her, the Grand Magus took notice of Siren waiting in the hall, So Pu standing with her. Jasmine walked over, unreadable. "Siren, why are you still 10th circle? You're more than capable of reaching the Grand Magus rank."

"I hate being on... councils," Siren replied.

"Fair enough," Jasmine responded. "You wanted something?"

"Siren was simply curious as to why a 12th circle was sent here," So Pu replied for her, Siren nodding in agreement.

Jasmine closed her eyes a moment before replying. "Two reasons really. One I'm sure you have already guessed, the other may be less obvious but So Pu should be aware."

"Oh?" Siren asked, looking to the elder in question, but So Pu merely shrugged.

"First," Jasmine began, "obviously you are aware that Frost is not normal. Her talent is far beyond her years. That isn't that unusual, but when it does occur we typically know why. Transplanted knowledge is the typical reason, but we don't know of any such thing when it comes to Frost. Even accounting for her twin curse she should not be as progressed as she is. However, you are well aware of this, as you have reported such to the council."

"Yes," Siren conceded. "So they sent a 12th circle to keep an extra careful eye on her?"

"Yes," Jasmine answered. "As for the second reason, I came to see my grandson."

"Your grandson?" Siren echoed, confused.

"Did not my name give it away?" Jasmine asked, and Siren's eyes grew wide in shock.

"Herb?!" Siren concluded and Jasmine nodded. "That would make you-"

"The former wife of Dragon Lord Mandrake, now widowed," Jasmine answered.

Siren turned sharply on So Pu. "You knew of this?"

"Not exactly, but I did know she was tied to the Musk," So Pu replied. "Eyebright knows it as well and is not concerned."

"He shouldn't be," Jasmine added. "Garnet may be my son, but I have no love for him. He killed my husband. Honestly I was of the mind to likewise detest Herb, but I have come to believe that was a premature assessment now. I have no loyalty, however, to the current Musk. My only tie to it even when married was my husband, and as such I care little of what comes of it now."

Siren frowned. "You'll forgive me if I'm skeptical of that claim."

So Pu smiled. "Perhaps, to alleviate any mistrust, you would consent to adding yourself to our little bargain?"

Jasmine sighed. "And agree to be marked to ensure my cooperation? Fine, uk,,although that will be the extent of my aid. While I have no love for Garnet, he is still family so I will not directly harm him."

"That's fine," So Pu conceded.

"So be it," Jasmine agreed. "Anything else?" Gaining nothing but the shaking of heads in response, Jasmine headed off.

"Even with a magic seal on her, do you truly think she can be trusted? She is one of the greatest maguses on the planet. She might know a way to circumvent it," Siren cautioned.

"She might at that," So Pu replied. "However, I also know she speaks truly. She cares nothing for Garnet's fate, and probably even wishes him dead." Siren continued to frown, but did not argue the point,

About that moment, upstairs, Shampoo at last came back to herself. Like Kasumi before her, she had little desire to actually get up though, but sensing Kasumi and Cologne out on the deck was enough to pique her curiosity. Quietly she got up and like Kasumi tossed on a robe before nearing the sliding door. Outside she could make out the conversation.

"Perhaps So Pu is right. Maybe I am influencing Shampoo negatively. It felt like it was the right thing at the time, but maybe I was too short sighted," Kasumi said, Shampoo hanging her head at the words. "OW! What was that for?!" Kasumi suddenly exclaimed to Shampoo's surprise.

"For your arrogance!" Cologne replied then laughed. "Do not get it into your head that you have control of people, Kasumi Tendo. No, if Shampoo has chosen that path, then it is only because you have shown her that it is viable. Shampoo was never some stereotypical model Amazon. I have attempted to mold her one way, and you have done much the same, but ultimately both of us were merely offering her options. If anything I had the advantage, training her since she was able to walk. What time have you had, the last few months?"

"I didn't mean it... I suppose I was kinda thinking in that direction though."

Cologne laughed once more. "Besides that, I think you are buying too much into So Pu's conclusions. It is true that sometimes in life you have to take the harsh path, the path of killing your enemy instead of negotiating with them. However, that path is often also the easy path. It is far harder to overcome an obstacle when you remove options from your arsenal. But think now, how is it we train ourselves? Do we take the easy path? No, you deliberately take the harder path. Strength can only be truly gained through adversity, and one who is truly strong need not kill their opponent."

Shampoo hung her head in thought at the words before looking up and frowning. 'She knows I'm listening,' she thought and decided to head outside. As expected, her opening the door only surprised Kasumi slightly, while her Great Grandmother merely smiled. "Morning," Shampoo said, seating herself next to Kasumi.

"Good morning," Kasumi greeted. "I hope we didn't wake you."

"No," Shampoo replied with a shake of her head.

"Good. Now that you are awake, I should mention something to you," Cologne said, gaining Shampoo's attention. "This new spiritual power you have gained is likely not the only thing. At that hotel, something happened. I have a notion of what but I have a feeling that you will soon come to find out from the source. Regardless, there is a secondary result you should be aware of." Shampoo tilted her head curiously at the statement. "Siren believes some of your dormant genetics may be reawakened. This will likely mean that you will have a number of benefits in the long term, not least of which is a prolonged lifespan like the Amazons of old."

"Is true?" Shampoo questioned. "Shampoo no feel any different."

"You wouldn't notice that, at least so easily. The full extent of this I cannot say, but do be on a lookout if anything else odd starts to happen. Also, don't get too full yourself. I doubt it will have much of an impact on your day to day life. Don't go around thinking you can start slaying divine beasts or anything now."

Shampoo quickly shook her head to this. "Of course not!"

"Good. Well... the morning is getting on. Have you both decided?"

"We decided last night," Kasumi answered, gaining a reluctant but confirming nod from Shampoo. "We will go along with it."

"Yes, I suppose that was not unexpected. I cannot disagree with your choice, given your current options. Why don't you two get properly dressed and I will meet you in the castle where they are gathered," Cologne replied, getting up.

"Alright," Kasumi responded and returned to her room with Shampoo. Within they quickly went about their morning preparation rituals before heading together to the castle as instructed.

Within they found it a fair bit less lively despite the presence of the Amazons and Kitsunes. Even these two groups had thinned considerably from the night before and none of the guests could be seen either. "Guess everyone has already headed on home," Kasumi remarked as they approached the two groups headed by So Pu and Eyebright. Jasmine was likewise present seeming bored with the whole affair.

"Slept in a bit, did you?" So Pu asked with a smile, but Shampoo only frowned in reply. "No matter... now, we only lack Herb, but he is on his way." A minute passed in silence between them before Herb did finally appear through the portal to the pocket dimension, a serious look on her face. "Good, shall we get this over with?"

"Yes. I trust you have all agreed?" Eyebright asked.

"Yes," Kasumi replied.

"No," Herb replied to everyone's surprise.

"No?" Eyebright repeated with growing tension.

"Not without some conditions," Herb amended.

"You are hardly-" Eyebright started to say but So Pu cut him off.

"Oh, let's hear him out. He is a smart boy, he knows the hand he has been given," So Pu said, eyeing the prince with interest.

Herb looked to Eyebright but the male Kitsune simply shrugged and gestured for Herb to speak. "First, I want Kasumi, Shampoo and any others involved in the marriage to have full honors restored as per Amazon law. I think this only acceptable seeing that I am male, even if I am marrying in on the basis of being female."

So Pu raised an eyebrow before looking to her fellow amazon elders. Getting no replies she shrugged and nodded. "Granted."

"Second, Kasumi will be free to marry another male so should she choose without repercussion."

So Pu smiled. "Granted."

"Third-" Eyebright groaned with impatience, but then gestured once more for Herb to continue. "This is for both of you. When Kasumi takes the throne of the Musk, you will not attempt to force her to support your actions. If she disagrees with them, you will honor such and take any blame for the fallout of them to yourself, not using her as your shield."

"But we are still free to act?" So Pu asked and Herb answered with a nod. "I see," she said in thought then looked to Eyebright. "That seems a compromise we can make. After all, knowing Kasumi's character I doubt she would truly go along with any plan she disagrees with anyway."

Eyebright nodded. "Granted," he said gruffly.

"Lastly, you will both commit to protecting Kasumi and those around her from any fall out of your little coup," Herb said. "There is going to be more than a few bitter parties that just might try to take a shot, any shot, they can in retaliation."

"Too true," Eyebright conceded. "I plan to deal with such parties anyway, so I agree. So Pu?"

"As do I. That all?"

Herb sighed but nodded. "That's all."

So Pu looked to Jasmine who stepped forward. "Herb, Kasumi, So Pu, Eyebright, give me your right hands," she instructed and each person took up position around the Grand Magus to do just that. In turn she traced out a magical pattern on each and her own hand, explaining as she did, "This is a special pack seal. It will be invisible to all but you, and only detectable via advanced magics. Those marked are bound to the deal here made. This is not a geas. You may deviate, but the others bearing the pact will be instantly made aware of your deviation from the pact. Any attempt to deliberately suppress or remove the pact will also be viewed by the pact as a deviation. Kasumi and Herb in particular, keep that in mind when dealing with Ranko."

"Of course," Kasumi replied.

"Good. I have joined myself to the pack on request simply to ensure I do not get involved," Jasmine explained before finishing. After speaking a few words in a magical tongue, she asked all. "Close your eyes and feel the agreement before you."

Kasumi did as instructed and saw a scroll before her with the agreement written out in full.

"Take a moment to fully understand it then open your eyes," Jasmine continued and waited as each did so. A minute later Kasumi was the last to open her eyes. "Good, now each of you in turn, speak your agreement to this pack and the pack will be sealed."

"I agree," So Pu started.

"I agree," Eyebright said next.

"Agreed," Herb said with mild annoyance.

"I agree," Kasumi said.

"As do I," Jasmine finished and with that the marked flared to life and disappeared to all those witnessing the event save those bearing them. "It is done. For Kasumi and Herb's sake, as means of a demonstration of a deviation," Jasmine said touched her seal. Instantly all the others' seals flared back to life with a mildly burning sensation. "It is unmistakable, yes?"

"Yes," Kasumi answered.

"Good," Jasmine replied and removed her finger causing the feeling to pass. "That was only a demo. If I truly had broken the pact the feeling would be even more intense. Also, it is based on the thoughts of the individual, not actions. So even if they do nothing to undermine your objective, you will be aware they have intent to do so, although not exactly what. Understood?"

"Yes," Kasumi said with a nod.

"Good. Now then that is over with, Herb!"

"Yes?" Herb asked.

"You have yet to use this," Jasmine said, magically causing the Kaisuifu to appear. "Or do you intend to keep that curse on permanently?"

"What about the wedding?" Herb asked.

"You're married," Eyebright said simply. "I need only recognize it without your dispute. No need for a ritual. Have one if you like, but it is not required. Go on."

Herbed frowned but took the kettle from Jasmine noticing it already full of hot water. Tensing slightly she poured the contents over herself. The effect was instant as she transformed to her male form.

"Good," Jasmine said, taking the kettle back from him. "Now, the acid test." Before Herb could question this he found himself dunked by a cold downpour of water from above.

"Hey!" Herb, once more female, complained.

"Just confirming," Jasmine assured the young prince before another downpour came, this one hot.

The now thoroughly soaked Herb was about to complain once again, but seeing that he now had a male body he thought better of it.

"Yes, stable, with no signs of change... yes, I do believe it works as intended. Siren, would you be good enough to return this to Frost," Jasmine said, handing the kettle off to the amazon magus. She turned back to Herb and gestured causing all the water soaking the prince's clothes to rise up into a floating ball, leaving her dry. "Better?"

"Yes," Herb answered. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Jasmine said, cracking just the slightest smile before casting the water over the grass. "Now if you all would excuse me, I have some other matters to attend."

The three groups began to disperse at that point, Kasumi and Shampoo joining Herb. "Thank you," Kasumi said.

Herb looked to Kasumi in some surprise before looking away. "It is nothing. Protecting me got you into this mess."

"Still... I've been looking for a means to restore Shampoo's status..."

Herb waved this off and walked off without further word, unnoticing of the slight smile he had brought to Kasumi.

Across town at the apartment Haruka and Michiru shared, all the senshi were gather together with Luna and Artemis save Usagi and Seiya. At that particular moment, Rei was pouting on the sofa, arms crossed in dissatisfaction.

"I don't like it, is all," Rei complained.

"I'm not exactly enthusiastic on this idea either," Luna added.

"I don't think we have much choice at this point," Ami replied.

"Why can't she just talk with us!" Rei blurt out but cut off Makoto before she could answer. "I know, I know... I just... dah!" A moment of silence passed before Rei asked, "Ami, you're smart, can't you figure out this magic stuff?"

"Perhaps, given a great deal of time, but to repair the magic of the armor... that would likely take me decades at minimum, and that is with an instructor. I don't have one."

"Right," Rei conceded. "I guess we really don't have any choice then. We could risk it..."

"And the next time Usagi gets those wings of hers... all our armors will probably fizzle out, and then what?" Makoto pointed out.

"And... yeah," Rei replied with a sigh. "Alright fine. I guess I'll go along with it."

"Anyone else against?" Minako asked but no one spoke.

Haruka, however, looked to Setsuna who was out on the deck, looking out over the city. "Hey, Setsuna, you have been awfully quiet."

"I have been listening and I have no objections," Setsuna replied easily.

Haruka frowned but then shrugged. "Guess that's that. So who all we going to tell?"

"Frost and Kasumi," Ami started. "It would seem Ranko would be best as well."

"Probably should do Shampoo too. With that spirit stuff she has..."

"Yes, I doubt our magical protections affect that. I would also suggest we tell Herb," Ami said.

Michiru frowned at this. "Herb? Why him?"

"I have been reading the records for the Moon Kingdom's history in the area to deal with the Amazons and the Musk. It seems Dragon Lords are able to see through the armor's effect after a time. Dragonkin do seem very resistant to mind magics, that is likely the reason," Ami replied.

"No other reason," Minako teased, gently elbowing her fellow senshi.

Ami blushed. "I... no!"

Makoto smiled but nodded. "I think she's right though. Better to let him know we know he knows... right?" Makoto said, unsure of her wording.

"Right," Michiru agreed with a smile.

"And Selene!" Artemis piped in to say.

Luna sighed, eyeing her fellow Lunar cat. "I suppose he's right. She's Frost's familiar after all, and she probably already guessed."

"Right," Makoto agreed. "Anyone else?" No one spoke up, and several shook their heads. "Okay. Then it's settled. I'll see if I can get everyone together."

"Better sooner than later," Michiru said. "We can do this here whenever you can arrange it. Not everyone needs to be present, just enough to prove the point."

"Yes," Ami agreed.

"It might be as early as tomorrow," Makoto said as she stood up, signaling the others to do likewise. "That fine?"

"It should be," Haruka replied. "Anyone need a ride?"

"Nah, we're good," Makoto answered as they started to gather their things to depart.

At that moment Setsuna stepped in and spoke. "A moment, please." This gained the others' attention. "I do wish to caution you that taking this step is likely a sign that we will have our identities become public in the not too distant future." This gave everyone pause. "I do not change my stance on this. I believe we have no choice but to take this step. I just wish you to know that and consider.

"As such I would also have you consider that you may wish to deal with your families sooner rather than later. It would likely be better for them to hear it from you than the evening news," Setsuna said.

"Oh yeah," Minako said with a cringe at the thought. "That would be bad."

"You should also decide on what you wish them to know should... the worse happen. We have managed to dodge that bullet several times already, but we can't count on that all the time," Setsuna added.

"Yes," Ami said, looking down.

"It is not something you all need to deal with now, but do start giving it some thought."

The others nodded and with a few last words they said their goodbyes and headed on their way. Setsuna remained, however, till the others had left, leaving only herself, Haruka and Michiru in the room.

"Need something?" Michiru asked.

"Transport," Setsuna said with a slight smile. "The gateway is still unresponsive. I'm going to try something more extreme that requires I be at the main gateway."

"Right," Haruka said. "That shouldn't be a problem."

"You two go ahead. I have some things I have to catch up on," Michiru said.

"You sure?" Haruka asked as Michiru headed into another room.

"Oh you can get by without me for once. Go on," she called out from the other room.

Haruka sighed before gesturing for Setsuna to lead the way.

Back at the San Cheng Huang, Kasumi joined Jasmine just inside the main hall of the castle. "Ah, Kasumi, good," the Grand Magus greeted before directing Kasumi's attention to a nearby fountain at the center of the room. The fountain looked like a simple four sided wash fountain with statues pouring water continuously into a small basin on each face. Kasumi took note that the statues on each side varied in design.

"What's this?" Kasumi asked as she looked over the fountain.

"A means of communication I was requested to give you," Jasmine explained. "Each face represents one of the factions. The fox here as you can guess is Eyebright. The young woman is the So Pu. On the back is mine. I chose a dragon to represent my side. As for yours at the front here, that one has the bird. I can change it if-"

"No, that is fine," Kasumi quickly replied.

"Good. To use it simply write a message on paper and dip it into the basin of the faction you wish to communicate with. You will likewise receive messages in your basin. Don't worry, the message will be unharmed until you come collect it, so check it regularly. If you have a more urgent message that demands immediate response, use a drop of blood in addition to the message. That will signal the other pact member via the seal, like this," Jasmine explained, dropping some blood into her side of the fountain. Immediately Kasumi felt an itching like sensation on her hand with the pact.

"I understand," Kasumi said before looking around. "Do you plan to move this to the restaurant? I'm not sure where would be a good place for it."

"I'm leaving it here," Jasmine replied. "Oh, you haven't been told, have you? I'm going to leave this place here with you as well. I'll also leave the barrier up. Consider it yours."

"Mine?!" Kasumi replied in shock. "I couldn't possibly-"

"Don't worry about it. I make these all the time. This one holds no particular value to me. And don't worry about maintenance. So long as you don't deliberately destroy it, the bound servants of this place will maintain it."

"Oh," Kasumi said, still in shock as she looked around. "Um... thank you. I'm... not sure I need this much space... The restaurant is already more than enough."

Jasmine shrugged and motioned for Kasumi to follow her. "Use it as a safe room if things go wrong. The door can be sealed making it difficult to access by all but the most advanced mages."

"Do you think I'll need it?" Kasumi asked in concern.

"Hopefully not, and honestly if you do you may find it quite ineffective as your opposition may have such a mage. Still..." Jasmine replied as they entered the yard. At that moment, they spotted Eyebright approaching. "Eyebright."

"All set up?" he asked, to which Jasmine nodded. "Then I guess we'll be off. Do try not to send a bunch of unimportant messages, Ms. Tendo."

"I will use it only when truly necessary," Kasumi replied.

Eyebright nodded and turned to leave. "Till next we meet," he said but Kasumi spoke up.

"What about Lemon?"

"What about her?" Eyebright asked, turning back.

"You're taking her with you?" Kasumi asked.

"Why would I? She is still yours to do with as you please," Eyebright replied. "Our current arrangement had no inclusion of any change to that situation. Do you mean to return her to me?"

"I..." Kasumi started but thought on that a moment. "What will happen to her if I do?"

Eyebright shrugged. "Can't be sure. Obviously the marriage to Herb is out, not that I think she'd want it anymore anyway, with that curse and all."

"I don't understand," Kasumi said, looking between the two.

Jasmine explained. "The curse on the kitsunes is pretty strict. Any hint of female on a person means they cannot fall in love with them. I'm guessing Lemon was unaware of this, or didn't know about Herb's curse."

"Yes, so she's actually incapable of loving him," Eyebright concluded. "It little matters now. As for what would be ahead for her, she'll likely have to take her chances as with all of our kin."

"To be made a man," Kasumi noted.

"Yes, although I think you focus too much on that. Male, female, it little matters. None are particularly satisfied with those arrangements. The nature of our curse, I am afraid. But, it is a necessary evil for the survival of our species," Eyebright explained.

Kasumi paused in thought over this. "I think... I'll keep her for now."

"As you wish," Eyebright said and turned away again, apparently unconcerned.

As the male Kitsune departed Jasmine turned to Kasumi. "You do realize he's playing you, right?"

Kasumi looked back at Jasmine, blinking several times before hanging her head. "I... I suppose, but still..."

"I would send her packing myself, but it is your choice. I'll just warn you she's likely to be troublesome."

Kasumi sighed and nodded. "I understand, but I just can't..."

Just as Kasumi said, the kitsune in question came running out from the castle, chasing down her father who was near the exit portal. "Father!" she cried out. Eyebright looked to the girl, his expression unreadable. "You can't just leave me with her!"

Lemon stopped just shy of her father and he shook his head, touching her on the forehead. This caused the young kitsune to simply stand in shock, nearly in tears. "You brought this on yourself, my daughter," he said after a moment. "Learn to take responsibility for your actions and atone for them."

Lemon hung her head, now fully crying, but Eyebright gave her no comfort, simply departing. After a moment, the young kitsune looked to Kasumi before running back off to the castle and out of sight.

Kasumi hung her head while Jasmine simply groaned. "You REALLY should have sent her packing," the Grand Magus commented. "Oh yes, regarding that, the barrier will prevent her from using her powers within the restaurant and here. I also added an automatic cleanse just in case she does enchant anyone. She may, however, still use her powers outside. I could seal them more thoroughly-"

"No... that's fine."

"Hmm," Jasmine responded. "Then I would suggest you collect the amulet of protection Sissithississ uses before he departs. It blocks her enchantment effects on those wearing it."

"Sissithississ is leaving too?" Kasumi asked.

"Yes, or so he tells me. There is also her cloak. It does likewise, instead blocking her power at the source. Obviously it can be removed by her quite easily though. She seems to have little control over that power and kitsunes of her age have little mana regeneration so I'd be careful letting her out. Without that cloak she could easily drain herself dry again."

"I'll try to remember that," Kasumi replied.

"Yes, well, there is also the matter of Frost. I know you've been relying on her a fair bit for magical aid. Sadly, I will have to take her from you for further training. It may be quite some time until she is able to return," Jasmine explained. "She has one week left, so if you need anything from her, now would be a good time to ask.

"Oh, okay."

"Grenda will be staying behind with her for now. She's quite able. If there is anything you need you can request it from her for now. She will, of course, be leaving with Frost though."

"Uh... thank you, but I think we'll be okay," Kasumi replied.

"Regardless, she will be available. She can stay here, I assume?" Jasmine asked, gaining a nod from Kasumi. "Good. I have a few last things to do here then I will be heading out myself. And, as Eyebright requested, please don't abuse the fountain. I have enough people demanding my attention."

"I won't. I promise," Kasumi assured her.

Jasmine nodded and headed off to the portal. Kasumi hesitated a moment, looking back at the castle before sighing and following Jasmine out.

In the San Cheng Huang proper, Kasumi headed downstairs to find Cologne in the kitchen with Siren and another woman. She was someone Kasumi had seen previously in brief, but had never actually properly met. The three were talking before taking notice of Kasumi and Cologne beckoned her over. Kasumi joined them, curious.

"Kasumi, let me introduce you to Crystal," Cologne said, gesturing to the woman.

Kasumi bowed slightly to the woman. "Nice to meet you," she said, taking note of the woman's odd dark red hair.

"Nice to meet you as well, Kasumi Tendo," Crystal returned the bow and greeting.

"Crystal here has been managing our beach location and has proven very able so she will be taking on the role of general manager here in my absence," Cologne explained. "She has a very good record, and should let you largely concentrate on other matters."

"Beach location?" Kasumi asked before she recalled. "Oh right! I totally forgot about it."

Cologne chuckled. "Well, you haven't been there in a while. I transferred ownership of such to Shampoo, by the way, it and the mountain location."

"Mountain location? I know I've never heard of that one," Kasumi said, wide eyed.

"Yes, I acquired it a while ago. That ski resort I felt was a good location for some business so I decided to pick up a free spot. A bit of forward thinking that hasn't really mattered so I guess I never brought it up. Crystal has actually been managing that one as well."

"Ah... that's good," Kasumi said with a smile. "I was a bit worried that I was taking on too much. Three locations..."

Cologne chuckled once more. "Yes, that shouldn't be a concern now," Cologne assured her. "Crystal will have it well in hand."

Kasumi turned to the woman in question. "I hope we aren't asking too much of you?"

"Nonsense," Siren interjected before Crystal could reply. "Demons are more than able to handle this sort of thing," Siren said with a devious grin causing Crystal to smile nervously while Cologne just growled.

"Uh... demon?" Kasumi said with a strained smile.

"Uh... yes," Cologne admitted, glaring at Siren. "But, it is not what you think."

"My species is a distant relative to... succubi, but don't worry. We don't feed on sexual energy. We are passive feeders on feelings of... contentment."

"Yes, so they are quite harmless, and well-motivated to run a good shop as it were," Cologne explained. "She is also quite aware of the type of situations you tend to run into."

"I see," Kasumi said, somewhat calmed.

"Yes, but do try not to get her involved," Siren added. "Demon she may be, but not exactly powerful."

"Correct. My species is basically human normal when it comes to our abilities. I have slight resistance to magic, and some modest sensitivity to it, but little else," Crystal added. "It is actually why we came to live on Earth. We don't exactly have the strength to fight other demon clans."

"I understand," Kasumi replied. "It will be a pleasure to work with you."

"The pleasure is mine," Crystal said in turn. "The rest of the staff has already been hired, and most have been getting basic training at the other locations. We will be going through onsite training here for the next while. I should have them all available for you to meet tomorrow morning. I expect we should be able to open to the public in a week or so."

"That's good to hear!" Kasumi said.

Crystal smiled and bowed once again. "Thank you. Now if you'll excuse me, there are matters I should attend to." With that, she departed, leaving Kasumi with the two Amazons.

"Speaking of partings," Siren hinted.

"Yes, yes, yes," Cologne said with a sigh. "That's my cue to head out as well."

"Oh... yes," Kasumi responded.

"Don't worry, you'll get by fine without me," Cologne said as she lead Kasumi to the main room of the Karaoke bar where numerous other amazons were gathered waiting. "I'll try to keep in touch," Cologne said before taking notice of Shampoo arriving. "As for you, Great Granddaughter, do try to keep up with your training in my absence. I expect to see some serious improvement."

"Shampoo will, Great Grandmother," Shampoo assured her.

Siren went to one of the back wall and traced out a circle. After a few mystical words the circle opened into a portal. "Alright everybody, time to head out, or you'll be taking the long way home."

As the various amazons filed through the portal, Cologne took a moment to pat both Kasumi and Shampoo on the shoulder before joining Siren at the portal, the last two to head through. However, before she could, she noticed Siren eyeing her oddly. "What?"

"It's... probably nothing. I'm used to you hoping around on that cane of yours."

"Yes, I'll need to replace it."

"Yes, but that's not it... did you get taller?"

Cologne frowned. "Of course not."

"You sure? And is that a bit of purple I see?" Siren said with a growing smile before leaning in close and whispering, "Just how close were you to that hotel?"

Cologne growled. "That's all I need," she muttered as she stepped through the portal. Siren simple smiled, gave a last wave to those watching, and departed herself, closing the portal behind her.

Shampoo sighed, looking around the now very empty room. Kasumi shared the look and nodded knowingly. "I know what you mean. The kitsunes are gone too, I assume?"

"Yes, left earlier," Shampoo replied as they headed to the restaurant area. "Frost leave too?"

"Yes, but not for a week as I was told," Kasumi replied before finding Herb sitting at one of the tables. "Herb."

"Kasumi," he greeted, rising. "I was thinking, you probably may need someone to keep an eye on Lemon."

"Ah... I suppose so. You're volunteering?"

"Yes," Herb answered. "I'm naturally immune to her charm effect. Sissithississ is apparently returning to the Musk so he won't be available."

"Yes. Will he..."

"Can he be trusted? Yes. The snake clan doesn't care about this sort of thing. He's not about to tick off Eyebright either. Oh yes," Herb said, producing an amulet. "He said you should have this."

"The amulet. Jasmine told me about it," Kasumi said, taking it from Herb. Kasumi examined it a moment before coming to a thought. "Uh, we do have a lot of room now, especially with the castle. Perhaps you'd like for Mint and Lime to join you here as well? Or are they returning to the Musk too?"

"No, they are staying here... and yes, perhaps that would be best. They don't go to your school so them freeloading at the dorms is likely a bit of an issue. I'm sure they can be put to work here if necessary."

"That would be fine," Kasumi said with a smile.

"Very well. I'll keep them out of trouble too. Are you quite certain you wish to keep Lemon?"

Kasumi cringed a bit, looking to Shampoo who said nothing. "Uh... quite."

"If you say so," Herb accepted. "She's in the castle now?"

"Yes... I don't think she's in a good mood."

Herb merely huffed. "I'll go speak with Mint and Lime then return." The prince headed off, once more leaving Kasumi alone with Shampoo.

"You still don't like Lemon?" Kasumi asked Shampoo.

"No," Shampoo flatly admitted. "But... Shampoo will leave be if she behave."

'Please behave,' Kasumi silently hoped.

Sailor Uranus and Pluto arrived at the Moon Kingdom without incident, scanning their surroundings briefly before Pluto pointed the way. "Come, this way," Pluto directed and began walking. Uranus followed, although frowning as she looked to the one intact structure around them. "You could have stayed in the car. I wouldn't be long."

"That'd be boring," Uranus replied without adjusting her gaze. "Besides, I've never been in this... gateway. Curious."

"There won't be much to see as I have to shut it off," Pluto replied, finally gaining Uranus' attention.

"Shut it off?"

"It is the only way inside. I would normally never do so as it takes considerable time to reactivate, but since it has been effectively offline since the incident, not much other choice."

"Right," Uranus concurred.

The two walked in silence for a couple minutes before reaching their destination, a doorway inexplicably sitting at the center of a courtyard. Uranus raised an eyebrow at the sight. "Guess it does lead to another dimension or something..." she muttered as they approached.

"Yes," Pluto said with a smile, raising her staff to a crystal at the door's very top. Once in contact with it, she paused and closed her eyes, and after a few seconds the crystal grew dark. "Alright, we should be able to enter now." Pluto pushed open the door and walked in. Uranus hesitated a second, but soon followed.

Within, there was not much to see. There was nothing but what appeared to be a great marble hall, something similar in design to Greek architecture if Uranus were to guess. Other than a few pillars and the door they came from, it was otherwise empty. "Not... exactly what I was expecting."

"Inactive as it is, there isn't much to see. Even when active, the various portals aren't easily observed, and it seems more like a maelstrom than a room. Without a key, it can be very dangerous."

"Right... so, now what?"

"Now we venture to the core room," Pluto explained, tapping her staff to the floor several times. On the last tap, the floor started to descend in segments forming a stairway. Pluto did not even wait for the path to be fully transform before beginning her descent. Uranus followed after a moment.

In the room below Uranus nodded with more interest. "This is a bit more interesting," she remarked. At the center of the room as a great crystalline pedestal with a holographic image floating over it. Along the far wall was a series of tubes all with glazed glass surfaces. Pluto moved to the pedestal and began operating it while Uranus took interest in the tubes. "What are these for?"

"Those are my potential replacements," Pluto explained absently.

"Huh? Replacements?" Uranus echoed but Pluto did not elaborate. The senshi frowned and on reaching the nearest tube leaned in close to look in. Within she could make out what seemed to be a human face, asleep. She withdrew in surprise at this. "Wait... what are these? Clones?"

"No," Pluto answered as Uranus examined the other tubes in turn. "Each is a distant relative in truth, suspended here from their original times."

"Why?" Uranus asked, confused.

"It was deemed that the role of Pluto, overseeing this place, was too important to leave unattended for extended periods required for a normal senshi rebirth process. That could potentially take a hundred years, far too long to leave this place unguarded. As such, potentials to carry on the role of Pluto are suspended here to take over the instant the previous Pluto dies."

"And they are okay with this?" Uranus asked with a frown.

"They were not forced or coerced."

Uranus continued to frown nonetheless. "Still seems... cruel. How long have they been stuck in these tubes?"

"A very long time, but they are not completely 'stuck' as you say," Pluto replied simply but then turned and tapped her tiara. "This is linked to all of them, and gives them access to all that I see and do. They can even communicate with me. It is so a replacement is completely up to date on current events. Even still, a replacement can take a while to get used to their new status."

"Okay... that's strange," Uranus commented as she turned to the last tube but found it empty. "What about this one? It's empty."

"That was mine. I have yet to have the opportunity to find a replacement," Pluto replied absently, once more working the terminal at the center of the room.

"How long does it take to find one?" Uranus asked, finally losing interest in the tubes and joining Pluto at the center.

"Years, generations... it depends. I have not concerned myself with it due to all the recent activities," Pluto answered.

Uranus puzzled at this. "Why would that matter?" she asked before her eyes grew wide for a moment and she looked back to the empty tube. "Wait... how long have you been awake?"

"Not long, what has it been, about a year?" she replied.

Uranus tensed at this and after a moment looked to the floor. "Damn, I didn't even... when you came back, I just assumed..."

"That the other had not died after all, or escaped her fate somehow? Sadly, no. I am her replacement," Pluto replied and paused in her work. "I'm sorry, I suppose I should have made that clear."

"No," Uranus said. "Enough about that. So, what's up?"

Pluto sighed. "Nothing good," she replied before manipulating a few controls and displaying a graph. "You see here. This is a measure of temporal drift."

"Uh... you're going to have to take that explanation a few steps back a bit here for me," Uranus replied.

"Of course," Pluto conceded. "As I've noted before, while the gateway seemingly gives you time travel, that in truth is not how it works. It is a gateway between dimensions. Each dimension, however, has its own point in time. As such it is possible to connect to a dimension that resembles our own past, or a potential future."

"Right, okay, makes sense."

"However, the very act of making that connection creates temporal drift. The two points start causing alterations in the other just by mere observation. You're familiar with the butterfly effect?"

"Yeah, a butterfly flapping its wings causes a hurricane across the world a month later or something like that."

"Yes, a chain of altered events that has infinite consequences. As such, no matter how much the connected dimension original resembled our past, it will change, drifting further and further the longer we are connected. Same for the future, just from the opposite perspective.

"The gateway works primarily by connecting with sister gateways in other dimensions and examining their potential futures, and likewise sharing information with other sister gateways from past points in time. They all exchange information, examine it, and attempt to direct our world in a particular direction that seems advantageous."

"That buffering effect you mentioned," Uranus added.

"Yes. The system has many ways to manipulate events on Earth and here in subtle manners to attempt to reach what is deemed an idle future. Sometimes this system is over taxed though and I must intervene directly."

"Right, right, but what does this have to do with our current problem?" Uranus asked.

"Again, look at the graph. This is the measure of normal temporal drift a year ago."

"Seems pretty slow," Uranus noted.

"Yes," Pluto agreed and manipulated the console overlaying another graph that sharply diverged. "This is the same time period in the last few weeks."

"Wow... that's a lot of drift," Uranus responded.

"Yes, more drift in a single day than would normally be experienced in several years. Dimensional links can only be maintained at a particular level of drift, and this is exceeding that limit in hours. However, establishing that connection takes days."

"So as fast as it attempts to establish new connections, they drift too far away to connect to," Uranus concluded.

"Exactly," Pluto said and sighed. "So, the system... thrashes, continually attempting to establish new connections, but it never can."

"It has to be Usagi," Uranus suggested.

"That appears to be born out. You see there, that was the time period she was imprisoned here on the Moon. Even then the drift was too much, but far lower than before or after. Even though we don't see her overtly doing anything, she must be affecting the world constantly, changing the variables worldwide in a subtle but chaotic manner. I don't think the system has any hope of working again with her active like this," Pluto concluded.

Uranus frowned then shrugged. "I got no suggestions for you."

"Nor do I have any idea how to deal with this," Pluto responded before shaking her head. "I think for now at least it is best just to leave the system offline. At least it won't waste energy that way. As I recall, Mercury was having the main system attempt automated repairs. I could redirect the energy here to the main system to aid in that."

"I'll leave that to you," Uranus commented and turned to the tubes. "What about them? Are they going to be okay?"

Pluto looked to the tubes and pondered. "That is a point... hmm..."

"Okay, well, you do you have to do. I'll be outside waiting. You going to be long?"

"No," Pluto answered, turning back to the console.

Uranus started to move to the stairs then paused. "A thought..."

"Hmh?" Pluto asked without looking over.

Uranus turned back. "You said when the system can't handle things, it gets you to intervene, right?"

"Yes," Pluto replied.

"So that is what was happening when you had us go to that restaurant a while back, meeting Shampoo."

Pluto blinked and looked over. "Yes... I see where you're going with this. That intervention is suspiciously close. Hold on a moment."

Uranus returned to the side of Pluto as she worked the controls. "This... this isn't right," Pluto commented in growing confusion.

"What is it?"

"The system detected this, but rather than avoiding it like it should, it got me to deliberately cause it."

"Us meeting Shampoo caused this?" Uranus puzzled in surprise.

"It is a chain of events. If you had not met Shampoo, it appears she would not have been involved in events till much later. That causes a chain of consequences, resulting in Usagi never being captured."

"And thus never awaking this power of hers," Uranus concluded.

"Exactly. The system should normally seek that idle future, but here it deliberately chose a future where the system connections could not be established, essentially choosing the unknown instead. That makes no sense. That is completely counter to its directives."

"The directives you know of," Uranus pointed out, gaining Pluto's attention. "Who made this place? Sedna right?"

"That is our assumption... you're saying she placed an override in to seek the awakening of Cosmos?"

"Any other way you can explain it?" Uranus asked.

"No," Pluto answered, shaking her head and frowned. "I do believe you may be right."

"Yeah," Uranus said. "Doesn't really change anything now, though, does it?"

"No. Although it does make me a bit worried about interacting with Frost. If she is Sedna, even reborn..."

"Yeah," Uranus agreed with a nod. "But, we still need her. Guess we just keep an eye on her."

Pluto concurred with a nod of her own.

"Anyway, I'll leave you to it," Uranus said and headed out. She did not make it that far, however, as when exiting the gateway she ran immediately into Orcus. Uranus frowned at the sight of the ascended senshi and crossed her arms. "What do you want? Weren't you supposed to be leaving?"

"What am I doing here is none of your concern," Orcus countered. "I will leave when I desire to do so, which will likely be soon. What are you doing here?"

"And what concern is it of yours?" Uranus coldly responded.

"Hmh," Orcus replied. "You are attempting to restore the function of the gateway? It won't work."

"So we learned," Uranus said. "Tell me, did Sedna make that thing?"

"Yes."

Uranus frowned. "And would she design it to deliberately seek to reawaken Cosmos?"

Orcus partly looked away in thought. "Hmm, it is possible... actually even probable. She did not do it with our general knowledge or consent though."

Uranus huffed at this. "And, just to confirm, is Frost actually Sedna?"

"I don't know this Frost, so I cannot say. If she strongly resembles her, it is possible."

Uranus huffed once more at the unsatisfactory response. "What do you have against her anyway?" she asked after a moment.

"Cosmos? Nothing."

"Nothing?!"

"I bear her no ill will. I just know the power she possesses and the danger it poses. She could blast the entire Earth to oblivion, or remake it on a whim," Orcus explained. "Worse still, this Usagi has no real control of it. Even our Cosmos could lose control, now in the hands of a total amateur... I can only pray we have made the right choice.

"Tell me, Uranus, do you truly have unwavering faith in her?" Orcus asked. In impulsive defiance, Uranus almost answered but held herself up short. "I thought not. I know of your history... your most recent history. Should you really be questioning my intents when you have stood so openly against her, repeatedly?"

Uranus had no reply and after a moment of silence Orcus merely huffed and turned away. "I know you had your reasons, but perhaps it is you who needs to reconsider your own attitudes." So saying, Orcus walked off towards the meeting hall.

Uranus growled before noticing Setsuna walk up next to her. "Hey... why did you..." she started to ask on noticing her companion in civilian garb before another Setsuna appeared in another outfit. "Oh."

"Hello," the second greeted as two more came out.

Several move filed out before Pluto joined them. The various Setsunas gave Uranus nods and waves before walking off in the direction of the teleportation crystal, leaving Uranus with Pluto. "What's happening?"

"We decided since the system cannot be restored, there is no further purpose in keeping them suspended. I have various identities around the world, enough for all of them. The crystal should get them close enough to civilization to get along."

"So... there is going to be a bunch of you running around?"

"Not in Japan, but effectively yes, although only I have the power of Pluto," Pluto explained. "If I should fall, one of them will likely get my power, and whichever one that is will take up the mantel as necessary. Obviously, I'd like to avoid that though."

"Right," Uranus said with an amused shake of her head. "All done then?"

"Yes, we should head back," Pluto answer and the two senshi followed the others to the crystal. They arrived in time to see the last teleport away. As they approached the crystal, Pluto paused and looked back. "Honestly... I'm not too sure what to do with myself. None of us are."

"Have a life," Uranus replied easily. "Eternal guard duty sounds extremely boring."

Pluto smiled slightly at this. "I had amusements... or rather we did. Looking at other possibilities could always be interesting."

"Oh?"

"Yes," Pluto replied, turning back to the crystal. "Like, did you know there is a world where you didn't break up with Kasumi?"

"I suppose all things are possible."

"It was quite interesting. Very rare for anyone to be able to get in between you and Neptune, but she managed it."

Uranus raised an eyebrow at that before looking away. "I have a hard time imagining that... but I can see it happening," she conceded.

"Shall I tell you about it on the way home," Pluto suggested as she touched the crystal.

Uranus hesitated. "Maybe another time."

XXXXX

Far away in China, Eyebright arrived at the palace of the Musk. He regarded it a moment in contemplation, but after sighing, headed in. The various guards did not challenge him, simple nodding to the head of the fox clan as he passed by and into the throne room.

Within he came upon a curious scene. A musk warrior, of the Leopard clan, was naked on all fours on the floor, held by a metal chain collar by two guards on either side of him. Every visible inch of his skin showed signs of wiping save his face, but this too was marred by the man's open tears.

Eyebright said nothing at the sight, instead looking to another party in the room, a woman. She was withdrawn, clearly trying to remain as unassuming as possible in the situation, and even now seemed to be regarding the exit. The only other occupants of the room were the two guards at the entrance, standing silent, unmoving witness to the spectacle, and the man Eyebright had come to see, Garnet.

The Dragon lord of the Musk could easily be mistaken for a simply older looking Herb. Only close inspection would make one see the differences, mostly down to the coloring of the hair and their choice in attire. Garnet's hair was made up very similar to Herb's, but the pony tail portion was a deeper purple than the near pink than Herb sported. Likewise the blue top was nearly black instead. While he sported the same general design of armor, the cloth beneath was not the simple white of Herb's preference, but decorated in thinly embossed golden animals that a careful observer would note as representations of each clan within the Musk.

None within the chamber gave Eyebright any particular note, so the clan leader simple leaned against the back wall and observed as Garnet walked down from his raised throne area to the man.

"Oh, Culantro... look at you," Garnet said as he reached the floor level, but it was not said in disgust, but inside caring tone. The Musk lord kneeled down to the man and lifted his weeping face to look at him directly. "Do understand the failing that has happened here?"

"My Lord..." Culantro wept. "I know I failed you-"

"No," Garnet said soothingly. "No, it is we who have failed you. We who let you become this... beast!.. who let you fall to these base urges."

"My Lord..." Culantro said with some renewed vigor through his tears.

"Tell me. Do you wish to be this beast?" Garnet asked gently.

"No!"

"Then what do you wish to be?"

"A man! A true warrior of the Musk!"

Garnet nodded, releasing the man and standing up. "Then we shall give you that opportunity once more." With a gesture, Garnet had the guards move back, and with a wave of his hand the metal collar fell away. "Rise." Culantro did as bidden, trying to compose himself as he did. "Do not fear, you shall be remade. When next you step in this chamber you will be once more the proud warrior of the Musk you were meant to be."

"I won't fail you, my Lord!" Culantro declared.

Garnet smiled and took the man by the shoulders. The image of this would be slighting unnerving to most as Culantro dwarfed Garnet by over a foot, and looked much like he could break the dragon lord like a twig if he so wished. However, the true power balance was clearly in Garnet's favor. Culantro even lowered himself slightly to be at Garnet's eye level, hanging his head slightly. Garnet leaned his head forward touching it to Culantro's and saying, "I know you won't." This declared the lord of the Musk stepped back, lifting Culantro to his full height before speaking further. "Get this one appropriate clothing, and take him to the chief instructor."

"Yes my Lord," one of the guards emotionlessly replied and with a gestured guided Culantro from the room along with his fellow guardsman.

Eyebright watched this with interest as Garnet started to return to his throne and the woman likewise attempted to depart, but without being prompted the guards at the door crossed their weapons over the exit. "I don't remember giving you permission to leave," Garnet said coldly as he sat upon his throne, any sense of his earlier concern lost to the cold glare he gave the woman.

"My lord, I-" the woman started to say but he cut her off.

"Culantro can be blamed for his loss of control, but you... tell me, did you have any hand in that loss of control?" Garnet asked.

"No! I-" the woman replied quickly, causing Eyebright to shake his head.

"Lies..." a ghostly voice said from her side, startling her.

"Would you care to reconsider your answer?" Garnet asked, his glare now even harsher.

"I... I don't know what you-"

"Lies..." the voice said once again, cutting her off.

"Stop saying that!" the woman exclaimed before pulling back, attempting to make herself small despite the futility of it.

"Disappointing," Garnet commented, before magically producing a note book. "Many were interviewed about the situation between you and your husband. Many have testified that you two constantly fought verbally, in private and even in public settings."

"It's... I... all couples have a few fights," she pleaded.

"Not all, but I can see your point, but the testimony speaks to something beyond your run of the mill arguments," Garnet replied before looking to a specific section of the book. "You spineless incompetent buffoon... colorful," Garnet read with an upraised eyebrow, looking to the woman but she said nothing. "And that is one of the more gentle exchanges that was recalled.

"And it seems words were not your only weapons."

"I never-"

"Lies..."

"STOP!" the woman nearly yelled as the ghostly voice once more interrupted her.

Garnet chuckled before sighing. "What am I to do with you? You're an outsider, so I can't exactly hold you to the same standards as one of my people. However, I can't very well let this situation go on, now can I. No." The woman shrunk away but could muster no defense. "Very well, I'll give you three options. One, publicly admit to your misdeeds at the central square to a general assembly and beg for their forgiveness. Two, banishment from the Musk with nothing but the clothes on your back. Three, exile to the badlands where you will wait till your husband comes collect you, after he has completed his retraining. I'll give you till noon tomorrow to decide. Take her away."

"My Lord, please..." the woman started to beg but the door guard seized her by the arms and marched her out before she could get any further.

Garnet glared at the door for a few seconds then suddenly turned to Eyebright, a broad smile of joy on his face. "Eyebright, welcome back!"

"My Lord," the kitsune replied, finally stepping forward.

Garnet rose off his throne once more, descended and patted the kitsune on the back cheerfully. "You departed so suddenly."

"Family troubles," Eyebright replied.

"Oh?" Garnet asked curiously.

"My daughter, Lemon, got herself into some trouble."

"Hmm," Garnet said with a nod, moving to one side of the room and sweeping his hand across the wall. In response the wall reshaped itself producing a full bar like setup where he began pouring a pair of drinks. "Lemon... wasn't she the one engaged to my Son?"

"To be engaged, yes," Eyebright replied. "Although such will now have to be shelved."

"Oh?" Garnet asked as he handed one of the drinks to Eyebright and took a sip of his own. "Why is that?"

"A pair of reasons, actually. First she wronged someone rather badly. Maybe you've heard of this person, Kasumi Tendo?"

"Kasumi Tendo..." Garnet pondered allowed, taking another sip. "Ah yes, I seem to recall some intelligence we got on the Joketsuzoku about someone by that name. Defeated Cologne's Great granddaughter, got married and then ran off."

"Yes. There are quite a number of complications I've learned of; among them that Kasumi is in fact a woman."

Garnet shrugged. "Given the name, should have been obvious. Jusenkyo I assume?"

"Yes," Eyebright confirmed.

"And what exactly got Kasumi to be at odds with your dear daughter?"

"Herb," Eyebright answered.

"Herb?"

Eyebright nodded. "It seems he has taken a fancy to this Kasumi."

Garnet laughed. "Truly? And Cologne's girl?"

"She is still involved too."

Garnet burst into even greater laughter. "Oh that sounds like quite the mess. Yes, it starts to make some sense now. Unfortunate about Lemon."

"Yes, but she made her bed. There were some tensions and sacrificing her was the best course of action. That said, this Kasumi who I gave her to, seems a rather soft sort."

Garnet nodded and took another sip of his drink. "Interesting. Well, I suppose you have other things to get to. Palm will no doubt need a good talking down."

"Indeed, I'm not looking forward to that," Eyebright agreed, putting aside the drink and bowing. "My Lord."

Garnet gave the kitsune a slight nod and headed back to his throne. Just as Eyebright turned to depart, though, Garnet asked, "What choice do you think she'll make?"

Eyebright paused and looked back. "Culantro's wife?"

"Yes," Garnet confirmed as he took his throne.

Eyebright considered. "From what I know of the woman, the badlands."

"Oh? What makes you say that?" Garnet asked curiously.

"I have heard she is very prideful. Such a woman would never stand for the humiliation of a public admission of her own wrongdoing. As for banishment, she is too dependent on her life here in the Musk. As I recall, she was something of a hunter before she married him. She probably will think the badlands are little more than a simple survival exercise area for the young trainees since that is the general impression most have save a select few who know its true nature."

Garnet smiled and nodded. "Yes, indeed. I predict it will take Culantro about one month to get through the training, and that is one month that will break her. Both will be quite remade after that."

Eyebright nodded and without further word left.

Far away, in fact not even within the bounds of Earth, 4 colored orbs of pure light gathered. As each arrived, they each returned to their respective human forms and simply nodded in greeting to the others.

"I must say, that went rather smoothly. I was expecting more resistance from the others," one said.

"Deep down, they are still loyal and had no stomach for keeping her captive," another replied.

"Too true," a third concurred. "Now it is simply a matter of setting events in proper motion. Is our agent on Earth active?"

The last nodded. "Already on it. Apparently things conveniently aligned for them. Still, the proper circumstances cannot be quickly forced. She has to be demoralized first."

"Of course. We have waited for millennia. A little longer is hardly a concern."

"Not too long though. If this Usagi learns to control Cosmos' power..."

"Yes, but I don't think that is much of a concern for some time."

"Should we be worried about the others, particularly... that one?!"

The last chuckled. "That one? Hardly. In fact, they may even be of use."

"A scapegoat?"

The last only smiled. "We shouldn't tarry here. No sense in risking suspicion."

"We'll leave you to matters here, and depart as they expect, and keep an eye on the others."

"We're so close... Don't screw this up, not like last time," the first cautioned before reverting to their energy form.

The last shrugged. "I can hardly bear soul blame for him and her response," they countered but merely got a huff in response before the grouping separated. The last considered a moment, alone before doing likewise.

End Chapter 54

Next time in A Scary Thought: Mousse is finally back, and the Senshi reveal their secret to those in Nerima.

For those a bit confused on the crossovers: Usagi, Rei, Minako, Makoto, Ami, Haruka, Michiru, Hotaru, Setsuna, Luna, and Artemis are all from Sailor Moon. Kitsune has her ties to the X-files, but only in that she's a fanatic of similar interests rather than appearing in said show. Saki and Sampei are from Sukeban Deka. You may also notice Frost borrowing a spell from here or there; in particular Gargoyles and Illusionaries are two prime targets. Speaking of Gargoyles, if you're a fan of the series you may have already figured this out, but La Bac is Cabal spelt backwards. Also Gen-U-Tech is also a business from Gargoyles. Does that mean this is a Gargoyles crossover? At this point, probably not. I have tried to square the circle of Gargoyles time travel mechanics with my story and it just isn't working and unfortunately they are too key to Gargoyles continuity to just ignore so most likely Gargoyles will remain just a shout out kinda crossover but not official. Anyway, besides that we have Chun Li, Rose, Shadow Lady, Shadow, Gill and the previously shown Karin and Sakura which come from Street Fighter series (Rose, Karin and Sakura from Street Fighter Alpha 3, Shadow and Shadow Lady from Marvel vs Capcom, Chun Li from much of the Street Fighter series, and now Gill from Street Fighter III). As for Ranko, well she's from my other major fanfic, Most Unlikely of Friends, although you can largely consider her standard Ranma trapped in female form for most purposes. And lastly comes dear old Siren who is from Dreiser's story 'Black Rose Blue Thunder'. I won't be using her much but she fits a temporary need. Be Dea comes from D B. Sommers fic Shampoo ½, and if you haven't read it, do so, now! I've also previously mentioned Perfume from same fic (although this story has two Perfumes being mentioned, the other being from my own Most Unlikely of Friends). As already mentioned, Miku, Neru and Haku are vocaloid character, but just cameo's for them.

Ooo... I'm so pleased. I finally got to introduce Garnet in the flesh. Garnet, in name and position at least, was originally thought up by Jim Bader, although to my knowledge he never went in depth on exactly who Garnet was truly, although he was clearly meant to be of a villainous sort. That said, I'm probably going to deviate quite heavily from Jim's probable vision of the character. Sadly Jim is not with us anymore for me to confer with so I can only guess on how Jim truly would have dealt with him. So this is just a warning that, even if you have read A Very Scary Thought, you shouldn't draw any real assumptions from such about who Garnet is, although I do plan to keep a fair chunk of his basis from such here.

On a side note for those crossovers, it recently came to my attention that some believe I am crossed with Negima. I'm actually not, but out of curiosity I checked out Negima and could certainly see the similarities (a lot of them in fact, and was quite surprised seeing as I had never even heard of Negima until it was mentioned). That got the proverbial wheels in my head turning about potential crossovers so... maybe, but don't count on it. As Uq Holder, Negima's continuation, is still in progress and throwing in all kinds of new curve balls, I'll probably be forced to steer clear.

Speaking of things I'm not crossed with, two notable ones are Ah My Goddess and Tenchi! Jim liked to use the latter a great deal, and I believe he might have used the former too, although less sure on that, but either way I have decided both are ultimately incompatible with my vision of my story world.

Website... does my website even exist anymore? Well, I have it on my hard drive still, but that hardly counts. Needless to say, if you do stumble on it, it's hopelessly out of date.
