Spencer carefully but swiftly scanned the bookshelves containing true crime novels. Other patrons would've looked up the location on the computer, but for Spencer, it was faster to run his finger along the rows of reading material and search for the name he wanted to find.
"Yes," he muttered when he found his target.
Spencer revered the silence of the library. He was one of those people who secretly wanted to tell off any person who dared speak above a whisper in the Holy of Holies. If it hadn't meant raising his voice, he'd yell at anyone disturbing the peace of his sanctuary.
He reached for the first of his chosen books triumphantly and immediately broke his sacred vow never to curse in a library when his phone buzzed against his hip.
"What," he hissed through clenched teeth.
"Well, hello to you too," JJ greeted. "I take it from your tone that you're in the library."
"Yes," he whispered. "Looking for the books I need. Call you back later, okay."
"Okay, sorry to bother you," JJ responded happily, and he could tell she wasn't sorry.
He hung up on her and didn't think about her again until he'd checked out his books and hurried to his car. Spencer dialed her number when he shut the car door and reverently placed the books on the passenger seat.
"Hey," he said when she picked up.
"You found them," JJ said, and he could hear the smirk in her voice.
"Yes. It'll take me – most of the evening to finish.
"You scare me sometimes."
"Come on, JJ. You know me. Also, I need to catch up before we meet him tomorrow. I should've read all of them before, but time got away from me."
"You know he's not a God, Spence."
"Of course I do."
"Then why are you freaking out. It's almost Halloween. Shouldn't you worry more about trick-or-treating children, horror movies, and our plans?"
Spencer did remember they had plans for that night. JJ had promised him she'd wear a requested cosplay outfit, and he'd agreed to watch her favorite Halloween movie. "I haven't forgotten. When will you tell me which movie you want to watch?"
"I told you it's a surprise."
He sighed and rolled his eyes because she couldn't see him. "Alright, I'll see you at work tomorrow."
"Can't wait. Are you still planning on wearing your Frankenstein mask."
"Yes, and I also found the perfect tie."
"Now I'm terrified."
"That's funny, JJ."
"Don't stay up too late reading. You need sleep." JJ admonished him.
"I promise. See you tomorrow."

"Did you enjoy trick-or-treating?" JJ asked him when they stopped at her office after their fight back from Texas.
"It was – different. I've never handed out candy at a crime scene." Spencer observed JJ putting down a few files and reaching for her bag.
"I liked it – which surprised me. What a case!"
"Yeah, those flyers all over town were creepy."
JJ smiled at him and took his hand. "What do you think of David Rossi in the flesh."
He squeezed her hand and shook his head. "Hilarious, Jennifer. I hardly know him."
"True, but now that you've read his books and met him, what do you think?"
"He's hardworking, dedicated, direct, and I think Hotch is not thrilled that he doesn't share his thoughts like we do, and I couldn't help offering to go through all our custodial interviews with him as if he needed it. He barely made eye contact."
"Spence – "
"I know, hero worship is something kids do. I'll work on it."
"It's okay," JJ said, turning out the office lights.
"What did you think of him," Spencer turned the conversation away to JJ.
"Well, he's handsome in an older man sort of way," JJ teased. "I like the salt-and-pepper look."
"JJ!"
She reached up to kiss him. "I'm kidding you, Spence. You're the only one I have eyes for."
"Actually, I don't mind if you look, but don't touch."
"Same to you," JJ said and slapped his butt.
"Hey, save that for later," Spencer admonished her.
"So, we missed our plans. What now?"
"I think we should get together this weekend and make up for it," Spencer suggested.
JJ narrowed her eyes as they walked to the elevators. "You still have to watch my favorite movie, and –" She stopped him and met his eyes. "I get to pick what comes after."
"Not fair," Spencer complained.
"Too bad. You still owe me for that bet you lost."
Spencer sighed and frowned. "Alright, but after that, we're even."
"Deal," JJ agreed.
