Scarlet Justice: Full Blossom - ep. 76
"Circular Motions"
I've spent the past three days doing virtually nothing. And it's been wonderful.
Fio went out from time to time to take care of work, but I haven't left this room since stepping inside earlier this week. I eat, take long baths, and read whenever I find myself alone. The rest of my time is spent doing the obvious things, like kissing and cuddling my wife in all but name.
Sometimes we talk about recent things when our tongues aren't too busy wrestling with each other. Things haven't changed too much in the time that we were gone, at least not in ways that Fio is privy to. I'll have to connect with people like Erika and Nami soon enough...but they're not in any rush to contact me, so things should be mostly fine. It seems like the old man has delivered the message across as many avenues as possible, to let me relax for the first time in a long while.
"Hey."
Fio clears a few locks of hair from my face as we lie in bed together.
"You're doing that thinking thing again, aren't you."
"Unfortunately," I say.
"Keep your head a little emptier for the next while. Nothing's gonna run away from you."
"I'll remember."
"Good." She puts her head into my chest and hums happily.
She's right in that I should take it easy for as long as I can. But there are some low intensity things that I'm planning, and they shouldn't take too long or cause anyone extra stress. I called a local clothing shop a few days ago, and they helpfully sent someone over to do some measurements. I need a new outfit for what I mean to do.
The only people who come to the door, as ever, are the staff delivering food ordered through room service. Fio sits in my lap and we eat together, feeding me some of what she has whenever the mood strikes her.
"I hope you haven't been too eager to get back to me," I say before she feeds me a piece of salmon from her chopsticks.
"I've been keeping that in mind, too. I know you wouldn't want me to forget about my teammates and all," she says. "They've all been really encouraging, and I know they wouldn't mind if I just took off from time to time. But I haven't been doing anything like that."
"Good."
"You've been talking with Hina, and Shino's pretty low maintenance...so your end is fine. Maybe you could step out and see Kurenai soon."
"I should. She's probably been worrying about me since the time I left a few weeks ago."
"Yeah. Here, open for me."
"Aah~." I get a salmon piece dipped in soy sauce this time. Delicious. "Thank you."
"No problem, hon. This stuff makes me happy, too. Hopefully I haven't been too clingy for you, but after everything going around and what you told me-"
"After I could come up for air."
"Right, when we weren't busy making out. After everything, I just really wanted a big slice of your time, more than anything else. I guess it's selfish, but I don't care."
"And you shouldn't. Whenever you need me, I'm here for you. Schemes and village affairs be damned," I say to her. "You're my priority, too."
"Yeah. Sometimes I end up overthinking it."
"If anyone would know about overthinking things, it's this woman here."
"Heh. Well, good thing you didn't have to think too hard about saving all those people. Seriously awesome, and you got the whole village buzzing about it. Me especially! I gotta work out something extra in my kit that can do the same."
"As long as you're not stressing yourself too much about it." I gently open her mouth and put some sticky rice in it with my chopsticks. She chews happily as I watch.
"No worries, I'll be okay. But I wanna keep up with you, so that we're good to go once you become queen of the world."
"Empress, darling."
"Right, Empress. Just like our big sis!"
"Speaking of which, I should call her. I wonder if news of the event reached into her world...if not, then I'll gladly be the first to inform her. But I know how much you worry, so we'll keep those gates closed for now."
"Appreciate it, Lili. I just want you refreshed as possible before you head back out to take on the world, you know?"
"I know. Although...I have to wonder how refreshed either of us will be if this so called cuddling we like to do continues at its current rate..."
"Some of us have been a little eager, it's true..."
"No complaints here," I say with a smile. "Besides, the more I explore, the better it will be for us later."
"Us, huh."
"Trust me when I say that I know just how to get really spicy when you want it the most."
"With lines like that, I think we should have been married yesterday," she says with a chuckle. "Let's finish eating before we get even more terrible ideas."
I pout at her. "But I love terrible ideas!"
"You sure do. And I've got work tomorrow, unfortunately. Unless you think I should retire early and stay at home for the rest of my life."
I sigh. "Maybe I should consider it..."
"See? Terrible." She smiles and I open my mouth for another salmon piece.
Duty compels me to start moving today. Boredom was never in my mind, because boredom only comes from a boring person. Even stock still, I remain vibrant.
That said. I have things I need to take care of. Politics, for one. It's more of a concern on my end than for anyone else.
"You sure you gotta get all dressed up to do this?"
"I'm sure, Fio. It wouldn't do to look less than regal, especially given what I mean to do. They'll be surprised, but appreciative all the same."
"If you say so." Far from disapproving, Fio is eagerly taking in every aspect of my outfit as presented to her. Traditional formal wear, for an important set of meetings with two important people: the lords of the Aburame and Hyuuga Clans. Hiashi would obviously be the most appreciative of the two, but this is again politics. I don't want to get caught out by some nitwit and accused of treating the Aburame as lesser beings.
Thus, today's wear. A well tailored kimono, in the usual silk. Furisode, to be exact. Might be overboard, but better that than leaving too much on the table, I'd say. A set of fiery red robes with long sleeves that hover a small way above the floor, decorated with rich patterns that consist of green trees and many coloured flora. They rise from the hem up to my waist, just underneath the fukuro obi that wraps around me. The sleeves are additionally patterned with lush green leaves at the top. And last but not least, a standing arrow knot that I've tied at the back, most suitable for this style.
My socks should be alright, and these wooden sandals will help with the formal look. With my hair in a neat bun shape, I've placed a lacquered wood ornament through it, and the same type of ornately designed comb at the front part of the bun itself. Makeup has been done lightly enough, I smell lovely after my earlier bath...alright. I think I'm finally ready to go.
"You've got nothing to worry about, Lili. You look amazing. Especially compared to me," Fio says with a smile.
"And you have just the look that I like. So you shouldn't worry about that either."
"I'll try to remember, when I'm not busy staring into the sun and all."
"Well, I can settle for that much." I place Hebinozomi in their spaces just underneath my obi, on either side of my waist. My first gift from Midori, functional and formal all at once. I don't expect to be doing any fighting during this errand, but you never want to leave things to chance in this world of ours. I attach a small pouch to my lower right arm, hidden well beneath the sleeve.
"Don't stay out too late, and call me if you do! I'll be here for a few more hours before we get the team together. Should be back a while after dinner," Fio says. She leans in and gives me a kiss. "And try not to cause too much trouble."
"No guarantees, darling."
"As always." We kiss one more time before she bounces towards the door, opening it for me. "The day awaits, Lady Kobayashi."
"Thank you kindly. Lady Asagao, until the next."
I get a smile and wink in return before clearing the entrance. The door closes behind me as I walk towards the elevator, already getting awed looks. People keep their distance or make sure they're out of the way as I walk, which I think is very nice. Nothing panicked, either. I guess it's not often that they see royalty walking in their midst, strange fellows in Hyuuga aside. I hope Hiashi won't find this too bothersome when I get to him.
Moving at a quick enough pace, I head down the streets and past the village's inhabitants as they take note of me. The area starts to quiet as I take a turn down a familiar road, and into the sections of forest where the Aburame live. Seeing as there will be a bit of an audience, the home of the clan head would be unsuitable for today's meeting. Instead, we'll be at the clan's public meeting hall nearby.
The clan leadership is out today, dressed like the Aburame usually are with various hooded jackets, eye wear, and facial coverings. These are the elders and high ranking members who help guide the clan towards its prosperity and success, as they have for a long while now. The Aburame are one of the Leaf's older clans, and contrary to the lack of respect they get have proven themselves to be vital to the village's function. They have long been known for their intelligence, innovation, and skill on top of their staunch loyalty.
My steps along the polished wooden floor echo through the hall, all else being quiet. If I focused, I could probably hear the unique buzzing of insects from each person ahead of me. Being around Shino and some of the other clan members allowed me to discover that each colony has a particular vibration they give off, making them easily identifiable in that fashion.
"Welcome, Colonel Kobayashi."
"Thank you, my lord. I am grateful that you could make time for me today." I place my hands together and bow for Shibi Aburame. Standing in groups on either side are his trusted advisors, elders, and officers as I noted before. It's not possible to get a good read through normal means, but at the least I can figure out that they don't seem agitated at this.
"It was little issue, especially as you gave us ample time to gather and prepare. You may go ahead and give us the reason why you've asked for this gathering today."
"Yes, my lord. By now, I assume you have been debriefed on the recent mission to the eastern sea that I took with your son, Shino, and Hinata Hyuuga."
"I have, yes."
"I also assume that you have been made aware of the results of the recent mission."
"The mission ended in failure. An unfortunate thing, but this is part of life as a shinobi as well."
"It is, my lord. That is why I have come to you today." I lower myself to the floor, putting my hands together and bowing my head. "If I have caused you any trouble or offence, I would like to ask for your forgiveness. The Aburame are a strong and reputable clan within this village. The failure of the mission was my fault, and I would be shamed if any negativity that arose from that reflected on Shino, or onto you, my lord."
"Hm."
"This apology is the only appropriate one I could think to give, as you are more than deserving of this respect. I ask if there is anything you require of me as a result of these recent events, that you make it known to me, so that I can complete those requests to your satisfaction."
"I see. An interesting way to look at things," Shibi says. "Please raise your head and return to your feet, Colonel Kobayashi."
"Yes." I nod and get to my feet again, hands held in front of me.
"We're very much grateful for your message and presentation. However, you should be relieved to know that we won't have any need for an apology or compensation of any kind. Far from damaging the reputation of the Aburame Clan, the limited information regarding the mission has further bolstered it, and added to our profile among the clans of the village. If anything, we should be the one thanking you."
"It's humbling to hear, my lord. I hope I haven't wasted any of your valuable time," I say.
"Not at all. As mentioned before, we allowed ourselves time in our schedules to hear you out, so it's far from a hassle. Your worries are understandable, and we of the clan see why you would come here to try and clear them away as soon as you could. But be assured that we have no ill will or resentment towards you for anything that you've done. You've looked after my son and the rest of the clan in your own way, and we will not forget that."
"Thank you, Lord Aburame. It's very heartening to hear."
He nods. "Then I suppose that ends our meeting. Colonel Kobayashi, my wife is making tea presently. I was wondering if you would like a cup before heading out."
"I would be honoured, my lord."
"Then if you would follow me. Comrades, thank you for your time. You're all dismissed for now."
Everyone makes their own way out, while I follow Shibi towards home. It's quiet all the way until we step through the front door. I take off my wooden sandals and get into the guest slippers at the door.
"Kiko. I've returned."
"Oh, welcome back. Did Lili not make it to the meeting?"
"She's here with me," he says as we walk into the kitchen. "There was very little to discuss."
"In that case...oh! Well, don't we look regal today?" Kiko says with a smile. She sets down the cups of tea on the table, and Shibi takes his seat before I take mine. "What a beautiful kimono...I bet it cost a fortune to make."
"Not nearly, but it would be a bit expensive for many. It's right around this point that you start experiencing diminishing returns."
"I see, I see. Well, it looks like things didn't go badly at your meeting, so I can be happy for that much. Shino is out with Futaba at one of the parks, searching for a certain beetle they spotted the other day. Although...I think that type gathers around the southeastern corridor as well these days. I told them as much, so they could make a date out of it."
I almost forget how much Kiko knows about insects herself. It's not terribly common that spouses share any sort of shared interests, not with all of the political marriages and worries about bloodlines and the like, so things like that are welcome and very lovely to see. Shino, for all his doomsaying, ended up blessed to get a woman that is much like his mother in the best ways. I wouldn't have guessed that it would be the same woman that I chewed out in a hotel room years ago, but not even I can claim to fully understand the whims of heaven.
"Lili came to apologize to the clan for any potential trouble caused," Shibi explains.
"Trouble? I don't understand...she saved Shino and Hinata, and so many other people out on the water. Is this some deeper level of politics again?"
"Yes," I reply. "Simply put, I wanted to get out ahead of everything and make a statement of my own. I figured that there wasn't anything to actually worry about, but impressions are worth their weight in gold. It's not all cynicism, of course...if there was something that had gone astray, I would like to know about it and fix it properly."
"The clan leadership should be well pleased with your presentation, as said," Shibi says. "But really, I should have been the one on my knees in front of you. Putting yourself on the line to protect Shino like that means a lot. Missions come and go, but people don't."
"That's true." I take a few sips of tea. "Thank you, Kiko. This tea is wonderful, as always."
"You're very welcome, Lili."
"If there's anything that you need of the Aburame Clan, don't hesitate to ask," Shibi says. "You've been invaluable to our growth, and we've started to gain more respect and popularity within the village due to the profile that you've given Shino. Not that we were clamouring for fame."
"I understand well enough. More recommendations and the like are good for any clan, and a little extra recognition is well deserved on your parts. Shino has been a blessing and encouragement to me. He helps nudge me in the right direction from time to time, and supports me when I need it. He really is the best right hand man I could ask for."
"Most people like having rubber stamps and the like," Kiko says. "Shino has always been more opinionated than that, of course."
"It's why he's such a good friend. A silly fellow at times, but who isn't."
"I also appreciate your spin on politics bringing you to us first, ahead of the Hyuuga," Shibi says.
"The Hyuuga? What do they have to do with this, aside from Hinata?" Kiko asks.
"It's her next stop on today's journey. And the reason why she's got one of her more formal outfits on."
"Hm, well expected from the leader of the Aburame," I say with a smile.
"It's hard to miss."
"You would think so."
"Hiashi has been worrying about you, subtly enough. I didn't think you two would get so close," he says with amusement. "I suppose time makes fools of us all, eventually."
"If anyone would know, it would be someone like me. I was convinced that I would be cursing him until my dying breath...so much for that."
"Indeed. Hiashi was always a different sort of man. Dedicated to the village and his family, and with a pride about him. But he was never too harsh when it came to his Leaf fellows, or without compassion. That all changed with the Hyuuga Affair, as you know. As bad as things would get, I never truly thought of him as a bad person."
"You've maintained a good working relationship?" I ask.
"Consummate professional. It always made working with him easier than a lot of other officials, which would surprise most if they heard it. Now, he's definitely more cordial. Seems more relaxed too, which makes sense seeing as he has Hinata taking charge more often."
"Getting any ideas?"
"Not really."
Kiko pouts and hits him on the shoulder. "You're not going to be young forever, Gen."
"When I actually start slowing down, I'll let Shino do more work. Until then, he can learn what he needs to before an actual transition begins. There's no rule that I have to retire and let him have his turn anyways. Delegation is an important function in our clan, after all."
"And when you get too old and slow to move around, where does that leave me?"
"That's something we shouldn't discuss in front of children, dear." He raises a brow, in that subtle way Shino loves to do. "Even if said children are already far too knowledgeable regarding said matters."
"I'm sure nobody disloyal to you is listening in," I say. "But I'm also sure that you would like to avoid scandal where possible."
"Your intellect and mercy are unmatched, Scarlet Viper. Thank you."
I wink at him, and he chuckles. Kiko playfully hits him again.
I walk across the village to my next meeting, which is with the Hyuuga. Kiko insisted on looking me over before I left the Aburame household, and I didn't resist her. An extra pair of eyes never hurts when it comes to appearances.
The usual guards are at the front entrance, with an older woman from the clan in between them. She bows towards me before leading the way inside, towards the designated gathering place. One of the many spacious halls that are on the clan's property.
My escort slides the door open and bows her head. I enter, and see the cast ahead of me for the first time. Compared to the Aburame and their formation meant to show simple solidarity, this is far more regimented and intimidating. The elders and clan elites, mostly men but with a few elderly women, sit in neat and orderly rows facing my direction. In the middle, flanked by two old men, is the current clan head, Hiashi Hyuuga. Just outside of that ring are Hina and Hanabi, on the right and left.
"Lord Hyuuga, Lady Hyuuga, esteemed officers and elders of the Hyuuga Clan...thank you for granting me this audience today," I say as I stop in the middle of the room. I bow deeply towards them before coming upwards, hands placed in front of my body. All of these eyes focused on me bring on a slight nervousness. There's an irony in that somewhere...these looks that are far from hostile being the thing that unbalances me this time. Almost makes one long for the old days, foolish as it sounds.
Hiashi nods. "We welcome you, Lilith Kobayashi. We of Hyuuga would appreciate it if you outlined your reasons for coming here today, and asking an audience of us."
"Of course, my lord." I catch Hina's eye, and by now she's probably aware of what I came here to do. I didn't say anything about it to her, since she would protest either way. This is something I think I have to do, and is only right. Even if it's just as a cushion. "By now, I believe that you are aware of the mission details, from our recent journey to the eastern sea and Water Country."
"To ensure the safety of the Mist's jinchuuriki if possible, among other things," Hiashi says. "Yes, we are aware. Both of the mission and its result. Lord Hokage reported that it ended in failure."
"That is correct, my lord. Though he himself has told me that I will serve no punishment, and that the mission's failure was understandable...I also have worried that unwelcome commentary and sentiments might have come as a result of this. Ultimately, the failure of the mission was due to decisions that I made at the time, without consulting my teammates, Shino Aburame, and your daughter, Lady Hyuuga."
"I see."
"Thus, I have come here to make petition of you." I go to my knees and bow my head. "If I have caused you any slight, or any damage to the reputation of the Hyuuga, I apologize here and now, to you and to all of those in your clan. If there are any mistakes or problems that I need to correct, I would only ask that you allow me the opportunity to correct them in full. I am aware of this clan's long history, and the strength that they command within the Hidden Leaf on many different levels. To compromise that would be harmful, to you, and to Lord Hokage as he strives to keep our world from descending into chaos."
"Raise your head, Colonel Kobayashi."
"Yes." I do so, looking up at Hiashi. He has what I can best describe as a slightly bemused look on his face, something that it seems nobody else nearby has truly picked up on. Some thought changes that look to one of acceptance. He clears his throat and straightens up in his chair.
"We of Hyuuga hear your petition. Your concern for the position of the clan is well noted, and greatly appreciated. Our desire to protect the Leaf from all harm has been carried from generation to generation, and will continue so upon Lady Hyuuga's advent. As we accept your gesture, we must also note that it is not truly needed. Hyuuga recognizes the difficulty of the mission that took place, and the channels that were used to prevent any harmful information that would pass through. You gave word to the Hokage of our daughter's exemplary skill in the face of a daunting challenge, and ensured that she returned to us safely. For that alone, we are grateful."
"Thank you, my lord. To hear praise from those of Hyuuga is humbling and much appreciated."
"Well said. We of Hyuuga appreciate your pro-activity in presenting yourself to us today, Colonel Kobayashi. It will not be forgotten, in the same way as your previous actions on behalf of this clan. Your time is valued, as you valued ours."
"Thank you again, Lord Hyuuga. I consider it an honour to be here in front of you and the great elite of your clan."
"We have no further concerns regarding the recent mission. Was there anything else in mind, Colonel Kobayashi?"
"No, my lord. That was my greatest concern, and you have soothed all of my worries. My only wish is to keep my beloved comrades from harm, and the great lords of the Hidden Leaf from scandal and frustration."
"Understood. Then this meeting will be adjourned, and you are free to go."
"Thank you, Lord Hyuuga." I get to my feet again and bow deeply towards the congregation.
"I have a request that you follow me for a while, Colonel Kobayashi," Hiashi says. "Would you have time to do so?"
"Of course, my lord. Time is far from an issue, especially at your request," I say sincerely.
"Much appreciated." He makes a gesture with one hand, and a young man in the usual robes runs to his side. They have a quiet conversation before he leaves, and Hiashi gets up. Everyone else follows suit, and starts talking among themselves while leaving. Hina and Hanabi approach, with looks of exasperation and amusement respectively. Hiashi stands back and nods to let me know that things are alright.
"I had a feeling that you were going to do something strange, but prostrating yourself before Hyuuga was not part of anything I had in mind," Hina says. "I suppose you apologized for the spectacle of it, and to help boost our image."
"Partially. It was also to suss out if any bad news had reached the clan itself, and it seems that it wasn't the case."
"I would call you overprotective, but you would take that as a compliment."
"Yes."
"Then just so we're clear, I'm not a frail child any more. I need to learn to take care of myself."
I reflect on Hiruzen's words the other day. So this is what it's like from that side, then. Seeing this kind of spirit puts me at ease. It must be the same for him.
"I'm prone to smother you from time to time, despite your position. You are my precious sister, after all. I don't mean to insult you, Hina. That's just how these things end up some of the time."
"I understand. I can't take offence to something like that, and never will. I'm always grateful for everything you do, Lili."
"Thank you. Be assured, I'll show you the proper shape of the world so that you can make your own decisions. It has to be more than love that ties us together on our path. Siblings have opposed each other in the past for far less."
"That's true. I'll be ready."
"Good." I pat Hanabi's head. "And how is my imouto doing?"
"Great. That was an awesome show you put on, Lili-nee. And your kimono looks so pretty!"
"I remembered passing by the shop a while ago, and called in to see if they had the colours and fabrics I wanted. It was a simple matter of getting the final patterns down, and here we are. I'm glad you think it looks good."
"Heh, with that body of yours, just about anything looks good."
"Hanabi, show some restraint," Hina says.
"What? Everyone knows my big sis is a super hottie, nothing wrong with saying it out loud."
"There are a lot of things wrong with saying it out loud." She shakes her head. "The clan will be well pleased with today, if a little confused."
"I bet this was part of Lili-nee's awesome strategy too," Hanabi says. "Now the old fogeys won't know what to do with themselves."
"There certainly won't be as much hostility towards you as before, even internally. Father would be able to put a stop to it immediately...it's not out in the open how much you get along just yet, but at the least you two can collaborate without it looking suspicious."
I nod. "Mm. Maybe one day I can give him a shoulder massage outside, without anyone batting an eyelash."
"This is the part where we leave before you start saying things that are too silly to take back. Farewell, Lady Kobayashi." Hina bows politely towards me.
"Yes. Farewell, Lady Hyuuga." I return her bow, and we smile at each other.
"Don't keep Daddy out too late, Lili-nee."
"I'll do my best." I pat Hanabi on the head again. My sisters leave, and I walk towards Hiashi before bowing. "Lord Hyuuga, my apologies for the wait."
"It only makes sense for you to properly hail the Lady Hyuuga and my daughter Hanabi. I have no issue with it. Are we ready to leave?"
"Yes, my lord."
"Then we will head towards a quieter place of sorts. Walk with me."
An attendant pulls open the nearby door and bows their head as we pass. We go down a smooth path that has decorative stone on the outside edges, and periodically spaced lanterns down the length of it. If there's anyone around, they seem to be keeping their distance. And not using their bloodline limit, I suppose. Hiashi's orders, naturally.
"You do look dazzling today, much like Hanabi alluded to. Expensive robes are one thing, but your sense of style is what gives them such life."
"Thank you kindly. As you might have guessed already, I was hoping that you would take notice."
"I have. I appreciate your gesture, Lili."
"So, were we spoiling for a father and daughter talk all of a sudden?" I ask as we walk.
"Hm. I wouldn't call it sudden. There is much to discuss, and this has turned out to be ideal time to do such."
"I see."
"What I would like to know most of all is if you're well."
"I am well, far as anyone knows. Your master Sarutobi ordered me to rest for as long as possible, which as you know is something I often have a hard time keeping to."
"It's why I asked in the first place."
"That's fair." I look over to Hiashi. "I really am fine. I've been able to rest properly in body and mind since returning, and this outing won't lead me directly back to work at full speed. I'm going to take the opportunity to relax some more after this."
"Better than one could have hoped for."
"You're welcome, of course."
He gives me an amused grunt in response.
"As I was telling Hina, this wasn't all politics on my part. I wanted to see if everything was alright where you were."
"Things are quite fine. One might say better than ever. Hinata's reputation, within and without the clan, has risen substantially. Hyuuga's compassion for the common man has been clearly highlighted as a result of your actions. Of course, it was your strength that led to that outcome."
"It was an easy enough decision to make. Carrying it out in such a quick fashion was the harder part. Tsunade was certainly annoyed with me."
"Merely annoyed, then."
"Right. It seems that she was starstruck enough herself to let me off with just a lecture. But I've healed properly. And it's good to know that I've given you another gift to make use of in the future. Anyone would be a fool to turn down a favour from the mighty Hyuuga Clan."
"Indeed."
"What of you? I'm sure you worried constantly while Hina was away."
"Something like that is normal, but minimized when it comes to you and the other members of your team. Shino is quite the sharp and resourceful child. His father should be proud of him, as I'm sure he is. And Kurenai...hm."
"What is it?" I ask.
"It would be less than spare change to make sure she's fairly compensated for her work towards the clan's prosperity."
"Mm. Once Mirai grows beyond the need for breast milk, I would send her some beverages that can be paired with dinner, or would prove useful for nightcaps."
He nods sagely. "We have ample supply in our cellars. I will keep that in mind. And the infant, how does she fare?"
"Last I saw, she was healthy and curious as ever. Mirai is doing well, along with her parents."
"Surely she will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Strong genetics on both sides, and a heart that will be filled with the Will of Fire. If that were not enough, she has you as a godparent. We've already borne witness to the staggering pace of Hanabi's growth, as one example. Strange and aggressive stances, and vibrant techniques beyond the current minds of Hyuuga. I suspect even that will change soon enough."
"Amusing to hear."
"You would think so. But then, I'm the same," he says with a smile. "I look forward to seeing the new heights that we will reach in the future."
"You said that there was much to talk about earlier. Beyond catching up?"
"Yes. Things I have been ruminating over, regarding the village's movements and that of the enemy coming into your sights, among other things. There was an earlier bout of open hostility between myself and Danzo Shimura."
"Mm."
"Things regarding that man should be of use in your continued operations. He is Sarutobi's comrade from a distant age...but that likely won't shield him from you for too much longer."
"I've said as much to our kindly master."
"As bold as ever. Let's continue our discussion after a short pause." I look ahead and see that one of the small, lonely buildings on the estate is coming up near the end of our path. We walk onto the new path leading out from the steps, and wait a moment in front of the sliding door. It opens, and there's a woman on her knees in front of us. She has long white robes that settle on the floor around her, with long and silky black hair. I remember this woman, yes.
"Lord Hiashi, I am ready to serve you once more."
"Thank you, Mayumi. Please rise."
She nods and does so. I can see that the same dark lipstick as before graces her lips. Maybe one day I should experiment with those colours myself. "Good afternoon, Lady Kobayashi."
"Good afternoon, darling. It's lovely to see you again."
"The pleasure is surely mine," she says with a smile. "And it is an honour to serve such a venerated hero."
"Thank you."
"My lord, your tea is freshly prepared as requested. Please allow me to pour it for you, and our esteemed guest."
"Go ahead," Hiashi says. "Lady Kobayashi and I will take our seats in the meantime."
We sit across from each other at the short, square table. Mayumi brings us a pair of fine ceramic cups, then expertly pours hot tea into Hiashi's first. Mine is next, and she looks to me as she finishes. I nod to let her know that things are fine.
"I will be ready and waiting if you have need of me. Please excuse me." She bows her head and elegantly leaves the room.
"I didn't think you played favourites so often," I say to Hiashi.
"Mayumi is first rate in everything she chooses to do. It only makes sense that I keep someone so skilled next to me."
"Hm. Well, I approve. A personable woman, to say the least."
"She's hoping to fetch a husband in the near future."
"Mm." I sip at my tea. Hot and delicious, as expected. "Shame she wants to tie herself down to a man."
"Well...interesting and chaotic insights aside. I did want to speak to you about the world's goings on, and how they would affect your ambitions. Danzo is a large part of that, and his influence should provide some illumination as an example."
"Sincerely, I do appreciate that you've thought of me. The great revolution to change this fragile world will require more than a lonely, if terrifying strength."
Hiashi chuckles. "As usual, you seem to know more than I anticipated. Then I suppose I won't need to be too careful with how I speak from here on."
"Appreciated."
"Shimura comes from an age beyond both of us, but has adapted to the current structure and taken advantage. Lord Hashirama, though he would loathe to think of himself as such, wielded strength as an authoritarian figure, where his word was law and everyone within his sphere of influence was bound to his whims. Nearly. Lord Tobirama, as his brother and trusted advisor, kept him in line well enough. Many a time he prevented...less than pragmatic decisions."
I think back to our meeting during the siege of Leaf. "A sensible choice, from what I know."
"Yes. At the same time, Lord Hashirama's desire for peace was so strong that he was willing to bind himself, and his unified village of shinobi, to the wants of government. In exchange for things such as land, access to infrastructure, resources, and so on...they would provide Fire Country with loyal soldiers and protection from external threats. Other countries made their attempts to replicate this phenomenon, some ending up more successful than others. Nations that existed once before were annexed or destroyed by the new national forces of shinobi, consisting of different clans that were once scattered across the land, or even nomadic. The Hyuuga have called Fire Country home since before the shinobi age, and willingly joined Leaf as it became ascendant. But all of this comes back to Shimura. When the First Hokage put the power of shinobi into the hands of the ruling lords, he ended up creating the lanes of strength and influence that people like Shimura would eventually use. This is how he maintains his hold on the village after once being disgraced."
"He carries out the wills of elites and politicians alike, who have no anger towards the Hokage, but view him as too light when it comes to certain matters."
"That is so. It's why Lord Hokage handed the reins to Shimura in the first place, wanting to maximize the village's efficiency. But the Uchiha Massacre was a step too far, and so the man was ousted in his official capacity. Still, he had gained enough favour and made enough connections to where he could not truly be rid of. The Hokage knew it then, as he knows it now. His hope was to weaken Shimura's power base enough to where he could not cause any trouble without directly challenging the Hokage, whoever it might be. Shimura was loathe to face off against the Fourth. Affable as many saw him, he could turn to steel in an instant. He might have changed the village's composition given enough time. Perhaps even prevented that incident."
"Perhaps so." A thought comes to mind regarding that. I'll speak with Hina about it...see what she thinks.
"Obviously, driving towards the heart of the matter removes all complications of that nature," Hiashi says with a wave of his hand. "But the days of might making right came to an end with Lord Hashirama's passing. War still rules the day, but there are an array of complications before that. Sometimes villages act on their own, with the implicit backing of their lords and their houses. Others prefer to wait for confirmation before doing anything. Still others act in time with the daimyo's regime."
"You would call the Hidden Mist one of these places."
"From what we have picked up, it seems to be the case."
"Hm." I drink from my cup. "What would you suggest in this situation?"
"As far as advice goes, I have none to give you in this situation of yours. The only thing I can say is to be aware of what binds people in place, and to act accordingly. Events such as today are a good start. To gain the favour of Leaf clans will be a great boon in the future, and nothing done is small or useless to that end."
"I see. I've long understood that strength is not enough to bring the world to order, much less this village. But as long as I move forward, things should be okay. Those with insight will join me of their own accord..."
"You seek more than the station of Hokage, it seems. Otherwise, it would be acceptable to leave Shimura as he is."
"Do you think so? I don't. His existence is a source of irritation for me. The darkness only needs one ruler. Distance between light and shadow is unacceptable. All must become one again, in order for our home to be truly balanced. Hardship need not be tragedy, nor bloodshed a sign of terror and shame. Instead of a discordant peace...the enemy, whoever or whatever it might be, should be put to the sword and destroyed."
"Hm."
"Terror comes from weakness. A refusal to do what needs to be done, terrible pain inflicted without assumption of cost. If the blood must flow, then let it be from these hands. The loop will be closed then."
"As long as you don't wade too far into those darkened waters."
I sigh. "I won't. I promise."
"I can live satisfied with that."
"I hope so. You know how stubborn I can get."
"Indeed."
"I want what Hyuuga has gathered on Danzo in the past while. Far from becoming the harbinger of chaos, I want to remove him as one of the pillars of society before we enter the final phase. Even now, Lord Hokage hopes to rescue him. But I lie in wait as the one who metes out justice in these lands."
Hiashi regards me for a moment before nodding. "Very well. I will have the information sent to you."
"It's greatly appreciated, Hiashi. Freeing you of your own burdens is something I aim to do as well."
"I would like to think I can take care of myself."
"You'll want to be in good enough health to run with your grandchildren."
"I suppose so."
"You should do more than suppose."
"I'll consider that."
"Thank you." I pick up my cup again and drink more of my tea. Quiet, and good for reflection.
Danzo Shimura...challenging him is uncharted territory, even for those of great power and prestige. Elusive, influential...wrapped in personal power. A secretive, illegal army that undermines even the office of Hokage. But then, even he operates under the eye of the lords. How much worse would it be if he didn't?
He is fond of this village, in his own way. I wonder if there is a plane, some sort of angle where our vision is shared. At that point, I would be able to see more of the world's shape, and come to an understanding of myself. Much like the reflections I could see in the eyes of those children, who survive on incest and murder. To read and decipher the cold essence of my eternal foes. Essential, and necessary.
The steps that have never been taken before, by anyone in this world save for the Sage. A legend from a millennia ago, before the existence of an organized shinobi world was even a seed in the minds of humans. This is the courage that will open the path to the future. I who rose above my own despair by consuming the darkness itself...yes, to acknowledge the glittering of my enemies' souls is but a simple task in comparison. And if it is so with that man who calls himself Pain, then it stands to reason that I've won that conflict already. We just need to get to the conclusion.
I put those thoughts aside and look to Hiashi, who has somehow become part of my family as well. The thought immediately comes to mind, that better things are possible. Believing in those things that end up beyond reach, or even cannot be seen. Those things are valid. Necessary, I would say. In this world where emergent pieces are built upon despair, the true power of belief makes one transcendent on its own.
He notices me and smiles before taking another sip of tea.
"Thank you for believing in me, Hiashi."
"Of course. You did give me hope, years ago."
"What is your dream?"
"My dream...hm." He sets his cup down, and looks at one of his palms. "Would you regard the glory of Hyuuga, the strength and insight gathered over centuries, stretching back to our ancestor Homura?"
"I would."
He makes a fist. "Then I would have that glory spread to all within the Leaf, and beyond. The enlightenment of souls, for a more perfect future."
"And you would not worry about the fate of your clan?" I ask.
"No. For where mankind chooses to ascend, the noble and mighty Hyuuga will be on an ever higher plane. After all," he says with a smug look, "the masses will always need the guidance of their betters. I'm sure you can agree, Envoy of Heaven."
Cheeky old man. I really do love him. "If it pleases you, Lord Hyuuga."
He nods proudly. "It surely does. Well said."
The rest of our meeting is spent going over miscellaneous items. Nothing much has changed on the surface. There's nothing to report on the roots running beneath, either. This is the point where everyone is waiting, it seems. But there's a simple reason for that, which is the upcoming meeting with the Tsuchikage. If things don't go well there, we will likely have to deal with a summit with the other three Kage. And that is almost guaranteed to be a disaster in too many ways to count.
If that's the case, then there's no point in wasting opportunities. I'll make sure Hina comes along in some capacity, so that she can get a word in with the man who ruined her life and almost destroyed her entirely. The old man would be amenable to such a thing, especially since it was his clamour for peace that set so many things in motion. It's something he thinks about often, and would do anything to make up for properly.
Exploiting his feelings seems a little cruel, but I'm more than used to doing villainous things like this as needed. It's what makes me a proper leader, and will make me a proper ruler for this world in the future.
I thank Mayumi for her hospitality, and then start to leave with Hiashi. Before that, I give him a hug while nobody else should be looking. If they are, oh well. He returns my affections, which makes me very happy. Afterwards, we take a casual walk towards the estate entrance, and I bow deeply towards Hiashi as a public farewell. He nods and returns with Mayumi at his side, while I head back towards the village. The tea was nice, but I'm just a bit hungry by now. Maybe one stop before home.
"Well, well. If isn't the great hero of the Leaf herself!"
I nod to Teuchi. "Salutations, sensei. I've come for one of your fine bowls of ramen."
"You got it. And-"
"Don't you start with any free bowls for life or discounted nonsense," I say as I sit on the nearest stool. "I'll find a way to get my money into your pockets if you try it."
"That has to be the oddest threat I've ever gotten," he says with a laugh.
"You know I'm serious."
"I know, I know." He shakes his head and starts cooking noodles. "You try to do something nice for someone, and this is how they act."
"You mean this is how I act. Make me one of your delicious bowls or ten, and let me pay you when I'm done."
"Yes, ma'am." He nods before giving me a smile. "I'm glad you're safe, by the way."
"Thank you. I appreciate that. Just as I appreciate you, Teuchi. Forgive this patron's insolence, won't you?"
"Easily done for one of my best customers."
"Lili! I know you're out there! You owe me an autograph for being away so long!" I hear from the back of the shop.
"You get me a cold bottle of milk, and I'll sign whatever you like," I reply.
"Fair trade!" Ayame runs around the counter and smothers me in a hug. "Welcome back, super lady."
"Good to be back."
"You look especially fancy today."
"I was about to ask. Big meeting with the higher ups?" Teuchi asks.
"Some personal things. The immediate details of the mission have already been taken care of, so today was just some social maintenance after being inside for so long. One has to stretch her legs every so often," I say.
"I'm sure the whole village is appreciative of your stretching," Ayame says. "Almost feels like I should be behind a velvet rope, sheesh."
"Compliments are welcome and encouraged, as always. Do we have time for some proper gossip?"
"Dad?" she asks.
"You ladies have at it. I want to get this first bowl perfect for Lili here..."
"That means he'll be a bit longer than usual," Ayame says as she sits next to me. I get my milk as promised. "Okay, where to start...ah, I know. Just before you left a few weeks ago, there was some drama on the upper east side that we were talking about briefly. Well. There have been a few spicy developments to that end."
"Oh, do tell." I open up my milk bottle and get comfortable.
