Scarlet Justice: Full Blossom - ep. 77
"Rounded Trips"
The destination is set. Silver Vine Village in Grass Country will be the secured site of our meeting with the Third Tsuchikage.
Communications were sent the day before, whilst I was on my apology tour. It will be another day or two before we get final confirmation, and then we will get our transport and security ready for our meeting. The Hidden Rock has indicated that they will have at most two bodyguards up front, special ops hiding in the shadows as a given. As for our side, it will just be me next to the old man. He wants to make a statement, and I'm all too happy to oblige him.
In the meantime? Letting Fio have more of my time, and checking in with some dear friends before the hour gets too late. I pull on a pink blouse and a good pair of jeans for the day, grab my purse and sandals, and head over to one of my favourite little cafes for tea.
"Lili! Oh I missed my bestie so so so much!"
I catch Ino as she jumps onto me, wrapping me up in a hug. My hand rubs her back to soothe her.
"I'm very happy to see you again, Ino."
"Not nearly as happy as I am. I'm so glad you're safe, and I heard about everything you did. You're amazing, totally the best, and I love you so much. Don't scare me like that again."
"No promises."
"Awful. Hmph." She squeezes me before covering my face in kisses. "Don't say things like that."
"No."
"Be nice!"
"No."
"Lili...welcome home."
"Thank you, Ino. I really can't promise that I won't be even more reckless in the future, but I'll do my best to come back to you."
"I can live with that." She lets herself down and pecks me on the lips. "Thank you."
"I always want to make my bestie happy," I say with a smile.
"I know you do. Rika missed you really bad, too."
"Yes. I have longed to see the great saviour, she who defies the machinations of fate itself. Oh to stand in awe of the woman who will lead this world towards its most glorious revolution."
Erika reverently takes my hands in hers as Ino steps aside. The warmth and passion in her eyes is unlike anything I've seen before from her.
"Great Envoy of Heaven...my liege. My beloved friend. All glory to you."
"Erika, my beloved. Thank you for your praise."
"It is only right. I would shame myself to stand before you, and not exalt you for your wonderful works on this planet. My faith in you has never wavered, since the day I made my oath to you. But now, after hearing of what you did for those innocent souls, and seeing your face for myself once more...my heart overflows with love and praise."
She steps forward, and gently presses the tip of her nose to mine. I can feel the affection pouring into me, from this simple gesture.
"Would you accept these feelings that come from me, overwhelming as they might be?"
"Without hesitation. I love you dearly, Erika. Thank you for believing in me so, and standing by my side."
"You are the brightly burning star in my midst. To be permitted to stand in your shadow is a treasure that I will cherish forevermore."
"How beautiful. Then let the blessings of heaven pour onto you as well, daughter of panthers."
She smiles brightly for me and nods.
"Let's catch up properly over some tea, as we meant to," Ino says.
"At last, the time has arrived. Tribute will be paid to the great mistress of shadows, as the cosmos demands."
We look up to see someone descending from the sky by way of crow. Or rather, two someones. The cargo is released just above the ground, and Dark lands gently before letting down Yuno. Landing on Dark's shoulder is an old friend of ours.
"Lord Suneater, hail," I say to him.
"Crown Princess Lilith, I hail you. It has been a while since we've properly talked."
"Indeed." Eddie is a bit larger, though not too much so. The most interesting changes come from the accessories on his person, which he must have earned after receiving the lordship. A small helmet on his head, with a golden feather sticking upwards. And three silver bands, one around his neck, and two smaller ones that go around his legs. "Congratulations on your ascension to knighthood."
"Thank you. I received the gifts from your kingdom, and they are greatly appreciated."
"I'm glad to hear so. And my darlings, Yuno and Dark. It's lovely to see you both again."
"We wanted to find you so that we could pay tribute and everything, like Aniki said earlier. Everyone's talking about what you did, and it blew my mind the first time!" Yuno says.
"A power that stretches beyond the bounds of humanity. To reject the inevitability of death itself," Dark says. "It is only those with the breath of divinity that could conceive of such feats, and then bring them to life. We stand in awe, and hail the woman who has entered communion with the angels of war and battle."
Yuno and Dark both get to one knee in front of me.
"Above the world, and beneath it," they say in unison. "You are the unrivalled child of heaven. And you alone are honoured throughout heaven and earth."
"..."
Would it be arrogant to accept such praise? It might be. It could be saying too much, since Hashirama Senju was able to use his strength to leash the tailed beasts and keep them as pets, only to be later sold off.
But I know better. I won't embrace foolishness and call it humility. I said it before...Hashirama's legend will be nothing next to mine. I will succeed where he failed, where all others have failed.
"The time will come soon," I say to them. "I will stand as an equal with the enlightened ones. So it is written in the tomes of heaven, blessed with the pen of the Creator who guides me. Chakra, our gift, shall bring us towards a glorious new age. Blessed are you who praise me so."
"As you go, we go with you," Dark says. "Thank you for your blessing, Shadow Mistress."
"An honour among honours," Yuno says. "Thank you will never be enough, but it can be a start."
"Well said. Rise to your feet, my loves. As you praise me in your hearts, we will live freely in this world as equals and friends."
"In that case, it's my turn for a hug!" Yuno jumps up and squeezes me. "Welcome home, Lili. We're so proud of you!"
"Indeed. Tales of your great feat against those thought to be near unstoppable have reached across our lands as well," Eddie says. "A mighty wind, the sister of the Great Goddess of Destruction coming into her own as a woman. If you were one who lived in the world of serpents, there might be more of a nervous response. But as it is now, the kingdoms and territories stand in awe of you, Princess."
"I see. I'll have to visit Ane-ue in person to see what things are like. Hopefully not too chaotic...and I can make time for some others while I'm there," I muse. "It should be fine."
"Fio told me you'd be busy cooking up schemes to do work," Yuno says. "And I got permission to tell you to knock it off."
"She worries too much. I'm not plotting."
Yuno pouts at me.
"Much. Listen, I'll only be making one or two stops-"
"There you go again. Aniki, let's get back so that Ino and Erika can keep this girl off her feet. She's definitely unrivalled when it comes to scheming!"
"Those with visions of worlds beyond live in constant spheres, moving onward towards futures beyond the scope of ordinary men."
"Don't encourage her...ugh. Eddie, take us away!"
"Until next time, friends. Crown Princess Lilith, may your path be lit by the stars."
"Many thanks, Lord Suneater. Be blessed as you faithfully serve your people."
Yuno kisses me on the cheek before jumping into Dark's waiting arms. Eddie grabs onto the convenient loops on the back of Dark's vest, and they rise effortlessly into the sky together before leaving us.
"That was a time and a half," Ino says, breaking her silence.
"I start to wonder what we would do without such antics," Erika says. "I've grown quite fond of the character called Phantom the Dark."
"Indeed. A boon to the Leaf, for many a good reason. I have faith that he will help us towards a brighter future," I say. "He's helped Yuno come into her own as well. I am grateful for him."
"Speaking of her, she's right. We need to get you off those always moving toes of yours before you whip yourself into a whole day of paperwork," Ino says.
"Stop it. I'm not...hm."
"It is beyond denial." Erika takes one of my arms, and Ino the other. "Let us commence our day date, consisting of fine teas and messy gossip."
"Ooh. My favourites. You know how to make a girl happy."
Ino leads us towards the cafe proper. "We gotta do our best. You're Lili, you know?"
"Hmhm. I know it all too well."
And so it goes. Delicious tea and scrumptious biscuits, paired with the most scandalous and savoury stories to date. Our network and number of willing collaborators grows with each passing day. I dare say it would be a shock if we couldn't find someone's loose change and return it directly to them by the end of this decade.
By the time we've finished, it's late afternoon. The girls walk me to the hotel before heading towards their own errands. I head up to my room, and since Fio isn't around, I take the opportunity to make sure I'm on course for the upcoming event. Tamaki tells me that they haven't heard anything new. I call Nami next, who is overjoyed to hear from me. Edelweiss is a hive of activity, and has gained new membership since the news of my heroics on the sea reached the village. I assure her that I will be around when I can to give a proper hello.
Last I heard from Ruki, Kakashi was out on business. Naruto and Jiraiya went on a short trip a day or two after I came back, and I'll probably miss them again on my way out to our miniature summit. Sasuke and Sakura are stable from what I know. I have to go and see Kurenai soon enough, of course. But there's something I want to tend to first, while I have the luxury of time and space.
"Oh, you're gonna see Midori. That's cool. She'll be able to scold you better than I can, heh."
It's the next morning, after an evening and night of our patented cuddling, and a satisfying breakfast. Deciding what to wear has been the most difficult task of the last few hours. I settle on a violet cropped blouse and a long green skirt.
"Wedges or flats?" I ask Fio.
"The wedges, since you love 'em so much."
"Done." I find my pair with green straps and slip them on. My nails are in good condition as always.
"What else are you planning on doing? Remember, I don't want you out too late."
"I'm not planning on staying overnight, but it's an option." I stride over to the bathroom and check over my face and hair. Some lipstick will work...nothing too bright today. "I was thinking on visiting Kabuto and his little ones."
"Now that's a name that takes me back. Not in a great way, but man."
"A very interesting fellow, from what I remember of him."
"I bet." Fio chuckles. "And look where he's at now. Got himself two kids and his hips turned to dust every night. The universe has got itself a wild sense of humour, like you gals always say."
"Oh, indeed."
"Tell the old boy I said hi if you get to talk to him."
"Of course. And you'll stay out of trouble while I'm gone."
"Yep. That's because I'm a good girl."
I leave the bathroom and take my purse from her, then pat her on the head. "Not just my good girl, but the best around."
"Thank you~."
We share a long kiss before I focus on the seal etched into my arm. I close my eyes and float off, through time and space before landing in my designated spot.
"I'm home."
The transport room with its array of seals carved into the ground is empty. I shake out my hair and make my exit, down the long hall with its carpeted floor.
"Princess, welcome."
"Thank you kindly." I nod to acknowledge the attendants as they bow for me. The main lobby is populated, but as calmly moving as ever. A few men here and there move along with the women who staff the many halls.
"Empress Midoriko is currently in her study. Shall I take you there, Princess?" one of the women asks me.
"Thank you. I will be fine on my own, and I would hate to move you from your tasks. Please be well."
"Many thanks, Princess. I will do as you've asked."
She bows for me and I move on, through the large and wide walkways of the castle towards my elder sister's study. I acknowledge the attendants as they pass by, and the ones who stand at attention near the entrance. Midori's study is yet more proof that we are truly sisters, shelves of books stretching forward, back, and across the room. The only way to truly quench the thirst for knowledge that has blossomed inside each of us as we've awakened. Sets of stairways coil upwards towards higher floors, with railings in serpentine motifs. The skylight high above illuminates everything, and gives a fantastic view of the stars at night.
The study is open and free to all, even visitors. More books than one could conceive of, on an endless amount of subjects. Librarians, dressed neatly in blouses and skirts with ribbons in their hair, go through the shelves and look over the many books periodically. Repairs, replacements, classifications, and so on. Much to do, and never a dull moment.
"Heh. That's what you get for crossing in that formation. Bozo."
Midori is having herself a sensible chuckle while reading, steam rising upwards from a warm cup of tea on the table next to her. A soft and comfortable chair supports her weight, same as the others in the area. There's a small stack of books on the same table, discussing wars and battle tactics from what I can read off the spines. Today's outfit is a pink yukata, with green leaves and branches decorating the silk. The green sash hangs loosely around her waist.
"Humans. So arrogant, and so very amusing." She smiles and turns her head to me. "We're in agreement, surely."
"As if I could say otherwise." I lean over so that we can kiss each other on the cheeks. "A lovely morning to you, Midori-nee."
"And an even lovelier morning to you, my most dazzling imouto. You shot down the Six-Tails, and it's left everyone astounded. I imagine it took a toll on you in the hours directly afterwards?" She guides me into the chair next to hers.
"Only because I couldn't prepare the requisite technique properly. But it was a success, all things told. Even if the mission wasn't."
"Missions come and go, but love is forever. Sarutobi massaged the reports a little?"
"Just a tiny bit from what I sent him. I suppose in my guilt, I might have been a little too forthcoming. Well, that's why I communicate one to one with him in the first place. I have a few things to learn before I can become a proper stateswoman."
"As we all do. Learning is a lifelong process. Keep that in mind, Lili. You're lovely, and we're all very proud of you."
"Thank you, Midori-nee."
"You're always welcome," she says with a smile. "I went over to have tea with Emi a few days earlier, and spend some time with Rose. They're both doing very well. I imagine that they have their own proclamations of praise for you, now that the news is flying across the land."
"Yes. Unfortunately, time continues to move ahead. We've a meeting with the Tsuchikage coming up in Grass Country, and so we're merely waiting for the time to set out at this moment. I've already been showered in praise and fussed over by certain parties, and I still have more to do, more loved ones to visit and reassure of my wellness. But I wanted to carve out at least this much time for you and Luna-nee. Especially after yesterday's reminder."
"Oh?"
"Eddie came by with Yuno and Dark."
"The Lord Suneater, yes. A lovely and charmingly chivalrous fellow, hmhmhm. I got a spirited message from Lady Shishigami a day ago, regarding your feats of might. Who knows, she might make an appearance in your village just to say hello."
"And have civilians and shinobi alike faint at the sight of her."
"Oh, is she ever fit. I fear I might find myself drooling over her by accident one day during a visit. She's also an awful flirt."
"You would notice, insatiable as you are."
"I won't hear slander of my Luna. She sates me just fine!"
"That sounds questionable, from how you carry on."
"Hush. At the least, you're in good spirits since you're getting so spicy today."
"You can thank all of the people around me for that. Starting from Hina and Shino, of course. Then the old man, and so on. Lots of people who care about me, and don't hesitate to praise me. Or tell me that I need to take a break."
"You do run about too often, especially after experiencing crisis."
"I've heard that enough over the past week or two." I sigh. "Still. It's a long way from what used to be."
"It is. I'm proud of you for that as well, Lili. You were willing to try, and that made all the difference. Good people draw good people towards them, even if it does seem to happen slowly."
"Yes."
"And one day, you'll draw even more good people in your world towards you, so that you can create something more brilliant than what we've seen before."
She pats my shoulder and gets up. After drinking the rest of her tea, she sets the cup down and has me follow her out of the study.
"A dream...or rather, a vision of you. Baa-sama saw it as well."
"What was it?" I ask.
"A great many wings, shining like the stars themselves. Halos of light, shining in every colour at once. In one dream, you had eyes like the burning sun. In another, yours were eyes that held the entirety of the cosmos themselves, reflecting the infinite."
"I see." Was it that those siblings had a glimpse of that vision, somehow? "I was venerated yesterday, Midori-nee. As the one who stands peerless in all heaven and earth."
We start up the spiral staircase. "It must be so. The honoured one, who in a moment can become the destroyer of the great wheel. It gave me peace to see you in those forms."
"It must be related to the form I unlocked earlier, Zero System."
"If that is the power to observe the future...then the last form would be the one to decide it."
I blink at that.
"Something beyond even my reach, I would say. I merely hold power in this world as the empress of serpents, and one of the great prophets among mortal beings."
"Baa-sama did say that I could surpass the existence of that man, the Sage of Six Paths," I say quietly.
"You have nothing to worry about, my love. As long as you continue on the path you are on now...you will reach that lofty goal. Those who rise above fear of mortality and death, as we have, will become children of justice, and the final stewards of chakra itself. A gift from the stars."
"So you've had that thought as well."
"Often enough. Truth inscribed in the fabric of the universe, my dear Lili."
"Yes, Ane-ue. As ever."
We come to one of the many lounge areas scattered through the castle, and step inside. Luna is doing some dusting, wearing a tied-off shirt and exercise pants with slippers. Her hair is fixed into a bun at the back of her head, secured with a decorative comb.
"Hard at work again, hm?"
"Nothing too serious. I wanted to clean up a bit before I sat down." She pauses her work to turn around. "What a wonderful surprise! Welcome home, Lili."
"It's lovely to see you, Luna-nee. Good morning."
"Good morning." She comes over to give me a hug and kisses on the cheeks, before greeting Midori with a kiss of her own. "You've done something amazing again, from what we've been hearing. I'm sure that none of those people will forget what you did for them."
"I'm sure as well. It was a decision made long ago, in my heart. I didn't just want to leave those people to the cold and heartless sea."
"Feelings that have been inside of you for a very long time now. If anyone would know, it's me," Luna says with a smile. "Even while you struggled, you did your best to care for me. That's the reason we've come to this point, after all."
"And here I am, thinking that I've been flattered enough this week. But there's nothing like praise from my big sisters, is there..."
"Certainly not. And hopefully along with that praise, you've been scolded properly to rest."
"From every corner of the Leaf," I say with a small laugh. "Saucy old men and starry eyed friends besides. They all want to keep me off my feet. Fio's done an especially good job with that."
"Nothing like a few sessions of roaming hands to keep you in bed, hm?" Midori says. I blush and move some of my hair backwards.
"Midori, behave."
"Yes, dear."
"Well, it's good that you've been able to get some rest since coming back. Which means that you've already planned something extra while you're here," Luna says confidently. "So, out with it."
"Hm. I was thinking about visiting Kabuto today."
"Far as I know, he's at home," Midori says. "Sana and Sanae have been busy at JPC lately, so someone needs to be home with the little ones. I'll arrange a ride over for when we part ways."
"Thank you, Midori-nee."
"All easily done. Now, let's get both of you overly ambitious women off your feet this time. The garden looks especially lovely today and the winds are deliciously cool."
"There is an irony to you complaining about my scheming while holding a duster in your hand," I say to Luna.
"Listen. It's fine if I clear away some dust every once in a while."
"You always find something else to do," Midori points out. "I might have to tie you to the bed again."
"You're always saying too much."
"Should I mention that you're always more excited for it than I am?"
"You shouldn't, because that's a lie."
"Always is, until it isn't," Midori says smugly. "Come, then. The garden awaits us."
"Took off like a drunk mule. Fuck's sake. Sell me on your stupid machine better than that or fuck off somewhere else."
Midori has been having adventures in the human world, as part of the board of directors at JPC. She's been looking into some of the advanced technology that has been flying about lately. Needless to say, she hasn't been impressed by anything yet.
"Better off stealing whatever they have and making our own versions. Losers." She takes a sip of wine while we sit in the garden together.
"Humans can be inefficient at the best of times," Luna says. "I suppose that will be left behind soon enough."
"How is that little project going, by the by?" I ask.
"Very well. No issues to report, simply getting used to the flow of energy within my body. It's complex, but not complicated."
"I know what you mean exactly. That's good. Overcoming obstacles like that should be done if possible...not out of fear, of course."
"Of course." She takes one of Midori's hands and squeezes it. "Every moment together is worth something, and if the heavens saw fit to make them few...then neither of us would despair because of it."
"But when the windows of heaven do open," Midori starts.
"Then we graciously accept the blessings that come through them," Luna finishes. "A long life with my beloved Empress. I could never turn away from such a wonderful dream."
"You two are so precious," I say with a smile.
"So you've been making friends with the jinchuuriki and tailed beasts?" Midori asks. "Honestly, as someone who also doesn't fit into the world of humans...I feel a bit embarrassed to never have truly considered their feelings, or thought of them other than as entities of destruction."
"It's something that slipped far past too many of us. I'm certain that I'm not the first to come to this realization of their person-hood, there are too many souls that have come and gone from this plane of existence for it to be so," I say. "But out of those who have gained the power to shake the world to its foundations...well, it is bothersome, somewhat."
"Hashirama was a kind soul, to me especially, but even with that bias I have to admit that what he did was supremely foolish. Still, maybe the best he could have done was use the tailed beasts as overgrown pets, which would still be a blow to their dignity."
"Perhaps, but keeping them in proximity as they were would have allowed him to come to a better understanding of them," Luna says. "At least, I think so. But we should all remember that people aren't infinitely aware or rational, much less free of bias in their world views."
"That's good to remember," I say. "I'm less upset with what Hashirama chose, and more upset with the blind adherence to his philosophies that were only partially completed. I can finally understand why Midori-nee didn't want to play hero for the village."
"Becoming bound to a single ideology leads to disaster. Even Enma maintains his relationship with Leaf out of loyalty to Sarutobi and his clan," Midori says. "The importance of being freed from such shackles cannot be understated. The caveat is becoming untethered from the world and its affairs, which inevitably leads to conflict and destruction. It's worse when one hasn't fully ascended yet."
"Hanzo and his mortal bindings," I say. "He's more than likely dead by now, but I can't say for certain."
"Pain, then. A name chosen by an infant, or someone with the mind of such," Midori says dismissively. She drinks the rest of her wine before refilling her glass. "If he carries the power of the Rinnegan, or a facsimile of such, then a troublesome exchange is expected."
"A mortal with the power of those eyes would grow arrogant and supremely foolish. The Hyuuga held themselves up in arrogance, and the Uchiha drove themselves into the abyss. It's an unfortunate and predictable outcome," I say before sipping from my glass. "But one easily dealt with, especially with this strength in hand."
Midori nods. "Well said, Lili."
"I'm very much looking forward to the world that you'll create in time," Luna says. "Papa will get to enjoy himself after all of his hard work. Speaking of, has he contacted you yet?"
"Not yet. I've asked the ladies to keep an ear to the ground."
She sighs. "So stubborn. Hopefully he doesn't try to do anything alone."
"It only makes sense. That's where you get your attitude from," Midori points out.
"And you're thankful for it, because it keeps you in line."
"I'm thankful for it because taming you always makes our bedroom time steamier."
"Of course that would be the reason you chose." Luna looks at me, exasperated. "Be grateful you don't have to deal with this forever."
"Not to worry, Luna-nee. I've learned my lesson, and will be sure to assume my role as the mistress in all of my relationships."
"You know, that's not what I meant."
"Not in so many words, no. But I can always decipher your wisdom, Luna-nee." I wink and she pouts at me.
"That's my Lili," Midori says.
"That's her, yes. The worst."
"And very proud of it." I raise my glass. "To fulfilling lives of scandal and spice."
"Here, here."
"I love you both, but you are terrible influences."
Luna smiles wryly, before joining us in laughter as we toast.
"It won't be a problem if you head back. I'll be going directly home after this."
"Understood, Princess. Health and safety to you."
The driver bows his head before pedalling away with my carriage in tow. It's late afternoon in the capital, and my destination wasn't terribly far to begin with. Walking would have been fine, but my sisters as always insisted on this. We spent a good while hugging and saying our goodbyes before getting on with things. This space of time a bit before tea and the dinner hour should serve my purposes well.
A large, well built home in the traditional eastern style. Made entirely of wood with windows built to let in light during the day. Sunsets are consistently late and consistently beautiful in these parts. One floor, maybe two. Or it could be an attic up there, I suppose. I go up the small set of steps and press the button at the side of the door before sliding it open. The vestibule with shoes and slippers neatly on racks is ahead, and I take off my wedges while waiting.
"A surprise, to be sure. Welcome to our humble abode."
"Thank you for having me."
Nearly the same as I left him all that time ago. Kabuto Yakushi, or rather, Kabuto Jakari by now. Married into the family, at the whim of his two wives: Sana and Sanae. They really did get their man as they wanted, and in a spectacularly forceful way. A testament to his resilience that he remains so spry â€" I can understand a bit more why he was so coveted by Danzo and Orochimaru, among others.
Kabuto has put on just enough weight and muscle to distinguish himself from the man he was before. He still wears those round glasses, which I can only assume have a great sentimental value, and his grown out silver hair is tied up in a ponytail, resting at his back. His clothing is in line with all of the other scientists and creatives that I've seen in life, solid and dark colours, plainly done. A sweater and roomy trousers.
"Well, the honour is always mine, Princess. Any tea for you?"
"Some water will do for now, if you would."
"Understood."
"And for the record, I don't mind if you have to get up to take care of the little ones."
He smiles. "Gracious of you. Please, follow me."
I step into a pair of guest slippers and follow him inside. The house certainly is spacious, and looks quite solid all around. The Jakari sisters know enough about style to apply it to their own home. Comfortable furniture, without too much in the way of distracting ornamentation. Instead of dull, so called modern design, there's no fear when it comes to colour and rustic imagery. A home filled with white, black, and shades of grey seems like a nightmare to wake up to each morning. Horrifying. I hate that so many people keep putting that nonsense in homes and businesses alike.
"The children are currently occupied with a puzzle I bought the other day. Very much into them, and demanded that I supply them with an adult level challenge for the next time. Normal water is fine, right?"
"Yes, nothing fussy. Just a bit of ice."
"Good. I'll be back in a bit." Kabuto goes into the kitchen area and gets a filter jug from the fridge. I take a seat on one of the couches. Nice and soft, but not overly so.
"Here you go."
"Thank you. And it's been a while, so I should remind you that it's okay to be informal with me."
"I did forget, somewhat. Thank you for the reminder. So, I'm pretty flattered that you came out this way to see me, even if it was as part of a larger tour. News has travelled to this realm as well, about how you took down a tailed beast in the middle of the eastern sea. You really are more terrifying than I could have imagined, and at such a young age as well."
"Thank you."
"It's the least I could say about you. I don't think Orochimaru could have guided you to such heights, either. You were right all that time ago to get angry when I compared you two."
"I was a little more impulsive back then."
"Only a little. But a genius all the same." He lets out a breath and sits in the chair across from me. Steam wafts upwards from the cup on the table next to him, which is near a lamp in the shape of a soda bottle. A gift from foreign clients, I guess. Intriguing. "I can't even be upset with the fact that you made a complete fool out of me. Empress Ryuuchi told me everything herself when we first met."
"Mm. Well, I don't have any remorse for what I did back then. You deserved it, and it allowed me to complete the mission."
"That's true. Even back then, I wouldn't have been able to do anything other than say it was well played, and I feel the same way now. You were quite brilliant. All praise aside, I was wondering what you wanted with me all of a sudden. I've been well out of the loop for a long while now, and aside from keeping up with my research on various things, probably don't have much in the way of immediate advice."
"Talking to you about past and future things would be enough, as well as making a small proposition. I seek to bring revolution to the world, and the first step in that would be crushing the ambitions of Akatsuki."
"Akatsuki, yes. Quite a troublesome bunch of individuals. Orochimaru was offered a great deal of latitude and opportunity by the man called Pain. A mysterious individual, always at a remove. We once sought more information by investigating his assistant, a woman named Konan. In the same vein, we wanted to make use of our mutual connection in Sasori...that is to say, I was working as a double agent. Sasori had used a technique to make me into a sleeper agent, and Orochimaru discovered it. He let Sasori think that he was still in control, so that we could strike at a time of our choosing. Of course, that all went south with the results of the invasion. And I can't be of use on that end now, since Sasori is dead."
"Yes."
"Your doing, no doubt. Perhaps that's more frightening than taking down a tailed beast," he says with a smile. "Even the smallest scratch spells certain death, and yet you managed to dispatch him and his vast army of puppets without so much as being grazed. Heh. Even if Orochimaru had survived to this age, you would be far superior to him with just that unfathomable speed alone." He pushes up his glasses. "Sorry if it seems like I'm laying it on thick, but it's very hard not to put together all of the data and look at things objectively. There are very few in this existence that can stand up to you, Lili."
"I understand what you mean. I didn't come here scraping for praise, but I don't mind hearing your insights either. Would you mind if I asked a personal question?"
"Not at all." He picks up his tea and takes a few sips.
"From what I know about eye wear, people develop a certain attachment to what they've purchased and have been gifted in life."
"That much is true. Your teammate is Shino Aburame, right? I imagine he's particular himself about the type of eye wear he uses."
"That is the case, yes. Which is why I couldn't help but take note of the glasses you wear. They're the same as from three or four years ago by now, and your manner of adjusting them is second nature."
Kabuto tents his hands. "These glasses were given to me by my mother. The first woman I remember being able to call such. I woke up with barren memories, under a tree. She used her medical ninjutsu to heal me. From there, I was taken to the Leaf Orphanage, where she worked along with others from the local church."
"A sister of the faith, then?"
"Yes. Her name was Nono Yakushi. The reason why she had medical ninjutsu on hand was because she was a trained shinobi herself. As for my name...one of my siblings put a helmet on my head and decided it suited me too well. It was Nono that decided on that simple name, Kabuto. I found that I liked it, and so that was what I ended being called by everyone. As for how I got these, it was a simple story. I was late to bed after trying to find and thank her for earlier, and ended up scolded by some of the other staff. I didn't know about the schedule at that point. They asked me to read the clock...and they assumed that I wasn't literate, but it wasn't the case. I was just nearsighted. These glasses belonged to my mother, and she let me keep them after I used them to read the time. They've been with me ever since."
"And you've cherished that pair from that day forward."
"Undoubtedly sturdy. The lenses can easily be swapped out, and I've never had any real trouble with the fit. Adjusting them is a reflex from when I move my head into sub-optimal positions." He pushes them up with a finger again. "Otherwise, they're unbeatable when it comes to comfort."
"I see." I take a sip of water before setting the glass back on the coaster. "And...what has become of your mother, if I might ask?"
"She was killed in action. And it was me who did it."
"Could you explain?"
"Yes. You know about Danzo Shimura by now, I hope."
"I've made my presence known to him, more than once. Even erased several of his ROOT dogs, including his favourite pet."
Kabuto straightens up in shock. "You're challenging Danzo and ROOT. Alone?"
"I'm rightfully arrogant. Not stupid."
"So you have the old man's stamp...well. That's certainly something. And seeing as the village is still in good health, you have a good hold on the situation. I can only guess that you've enlisted the help of the panther girl, among others. Orochimaru showed an interest in her as well, at one point. Though he commented on her temperament being unsuitable."
"An interesting thing to say."
"Certainly. She's always seemed like she could wait out a stone statue if asked. I couldn't tell you what that man was thinking. I suppose we'll never know...well, there is a way to ask him."
The water glass chills in my grip as I pick it up. "As much as I love Sana and Sanae, they won't be able to stop me from tearing your heart from your chest if you perform that abomination of a jutsu in my presence." I drink some of the now icy water.
"Right. So noted." He coughs and pushes up his glasses again. "To continue on. If you know about Danzo, you know about his tours through the village, in order to gather recruits for his secretive shinobi force. Not just children from prominent clans, but those viewed as society's discards. It made the orphanage an attractive spot for him. The workers at the orphanage, my mother included, did what they could to keep him at bay. But there was always something that we were lacking, and that he had limitless access to."
"Money," I conclude.
"Correct. The orphanage was constantly on borrowed time. Danzo provided funding for the children he took. I overheard one conversation, where he wanted to take me into his group. It was the first time I saw Orochimaru. He was with someone else, a member of the Aburame Clan. It turned out that...my mother was a former member of ROOT. Her personality was deemed too unsuitable for the organization despite her skill, and so she left and became a jounin in the regular forces. She was a part of the Medic Corps in addition to her duties at the orphanage."
"I see." This must have been earlier on in Danzo's shadowy run. Orochimaru at his side, and willingly letting talented people go so easily. But it only makes sense that he would tighten his chains after losing Hiruzen's mandate, and use even more terrifying means to keep his hounds in line.
"He threatened the orphanage, saying that he would withhold the funding it needed to operate, and so Mother gave in and agreed to go on the mission he asked her to. But then he decided that he needed a replacement for a shinobi lost on a mission to the Hidden Rock earlier. She was about to refuse..."
"And so you volunteered yourself," I conclude.
"Yes. I entered ROOT, taking on their missions for five years. Assuming different identities in different villages, taking on undercover assignments, and sending the data back to the Leaf. I don't know how much useful data I got. I don't even remember gathering a lot of it, just the aftermath. It was because I was young that I ended being useful. Small enough to get into tight spaces. Young enough to evade suspicion. I did it all."
"And Nono?" I ask.
He sighs and taps his fingers on the rest of his chair. "The next time I encountered her, she was going by the name Nanigashi. We were in the Hidden Rock. She attacked with intent to kill...and I struck true. By the time I realized it, it was too late. It wasn't a genjutsu. It was something far more effective than that."
"What do you mean?"
"Orochimaru found me. He had been in the area, watching. Waiting for his chance. He revealed everything. Danzo's intent was to dispose of me. He was willing to trade Mother's life as well. She...she carried on all of that time, for my sake. To try and save me. There were pictures. Photos of people who looked like me, at different times. The differences were close enough that anyone could mistake them for me at a glance."
"Diabolical behaviour. He brainwashed her," I say quietly.
"Over five long years for her...Danzo warped her memories. He promised her that if she completed a certain mission, an assassination, that I would be safely released from ROOT's service."
"She would kill you without even knowing it."
"Yes. I had become too dangerous an asset. Danzo knew how strongly I felt about the orphanage, about the children there. He saw me as a threat because of my skill and knowledge. To close the loop only made sense. It had to have been something he had done dozens of times before. But he underestimated my skill...and Orochimaru's ambition. For her to not recognize me almost brought me to ruin. And you probably know the rest by now."
"Yes." From this story, and the fact that Danzo has only become more ruthless over time...maybe there truly is no bringing those dragged into the darkness back. Not just terrible seals, but total manipulation and destruction of the mind.
For the village. To protect the village...disgusting and cruel, above all else. The village. No village, no location on top of dirt and soil, is worth that sort of cruelty.
"I have been to that place. The edge of despair. I've lost family, and seen them hurt," I say.
"And you rose above it, in the end."
"I did. But there's nothing wrong with what you did. You wanted to survive, to be someone. To grab onto something, after losing so much of your life. Your mother was your light."
"I didn't know who I was. Orochimaru promised to help me figure it all out, but we never got that far in the end. I spied on Akatsuki after we left the organization. I infiltrated Leaf using my mother's name, and most were none the wiser. It was also a dare to make Danzo move first."
"That's why he was so nervous when you were being held at Intelligence."
"Yes. Orochimaru and I had enough information to undo him. But we also knew that he wouldn't do anything rash because of his ambition for the seat of Hokage. He always thought of Sarutobi as too weak."
As if I didn't have enough reasons to see that trash dead. I suppose it's full speed ahead from here. The only thing left to do is find the perfect opening. And I'll be damn sure to find it.
"Thankfully, I have things figured out by now. I know what it is I want to do, and how best to help change the world around me. It's not as a spy for Danzo, or as Orochimaru's shadow...something more important than that. These past few years where I could live and think for myself allowed me to return to my roots. The person I am is Nono Yakushi's son. A husband to two strong women. And a father to the most precious treasures in the world."
"It's good to hear that you've found yourself at last. The world will surely be richer for it," I say sincerely. "Perhaps one day you could help with the project I've started."
"Magnolia House. I've heard of it from Sana and Sanae," he says. "Quite ambitious, and intriguing. If you simply send word, I can volunteer some time into helping bring it into its full potential. Maybe...you could make it the orphanage of choice for the village itself. The Leaf Orphanage was a comfortable enough place, but the distance isolates the children. That's the price of affordable land, I suppose."
"Yes. I'll be sure to call on you if needed. Before I forget, Fio says hello. You might remember her as Fionne Mutou."
"The Mutou girl. I do remember...even back then, I felt sorry for her. Not sorry enough to do anything of import, but Orochimaru was especially harsh on her. I intended to get permission to run my own experiments on her, just so that she wouldn't completely erode physically and mentally. But I never got around to that. Hm. I assumed that she would have been captured or killed in the Leaf raids. How do you know her?"
"She's my woman," I say firmly.
"Ah. Then I suppose apologies wouldn't be enough for those sorts of interactions."
"No. But between what she's told me, and the fact that you were at a remove, along with everything else...my desire for recompense is quite low. You can make it up to me in other ways, of course."
"On a personal level."
"Yes. Giving you formal orders would be binding, but troublesome for you. I assume you're doing much in the way of work for Ane-ue by way of JPC."
"That's correct."
"Fair enough. I'll leave you to that. I did want to ask you for some lore while we were here."
Kabuto picks up his tea and takes a few sips. "Yes, go ahead."
"Thank you. What do you know about the power of the Rinnegan? Surely you and your former master, lacking in moral scruples as he was, looked into that miraculous power and experimented to that end."
"Orochimaru's focus was mainly on the Sharingan, because of its immediate impact on his operations. It would at the least provide a step towards greater ocular powers such as the Rinnegan. Most of his research was privately done, and I only got a few glimpses into it. The Rinnegan, of course, is a reality. The power to immediately use all five chakra natures at will, including those outside of the wheel."
"Yin and Yang Release, and the complete power, Yin-Yang Release."
"Yes. Total control over the use of chakra. The potential to tear open barriers and break down the walls between dimensions. Even those that separate life and death."
I sip at my water. "The usual fare. Fear of death and the world beyond drives your types to absurdity and atrocity."
"Heh. Death for most would mean tasks left undone, and family left behind. But I suppose you don't see it that way."
"Death is just another beast that can be denied the chance to savour its next meal. Hasn't that been demonstrated to the satisfaction of those in this world?"
"You're talking about the Dead Demon Consuming Seal?"
"The same that the Fourth used, yes."
"That explains the results of the testing we did earlier. I see. So his soul is no longer in the bounds of this world. I suppose the only way to retrieve his soul, if it still exists, is to remove it from the confines of death itself. That is to say, calling forth the shinigami, and removing the involved souls from its stomach."
"I see. It's a project that I should consider in the future...when it comes time for such things, I will let you know."
"Alright. Our knowledge about the Rinnegan outside of the ancient lore was...lacking."
"What about Pain? What do you know about him and his ambitions?"
"Not much. As I mentioned before, Orochimaru was drawn to Akatsuki because of what they could provide him. Indeed, it was the same for the other members. Sasori could hunt down rare bloodlines and test his marionettes as needed. He was quite devoted to the organization, and took much offence to us leaving all of a sudden. Part of why he targeted me."
"Understandable."
"Yes, quite. Deidara, from what I knew of him, desired to commit acts of terror through bombing campaigns. He also had a fixation on Itachi Uchiha, the one who ultimately recruited him to the organization. Kakuzu was interested in money, and that was something simple to grant. Hidan wanted the chance to murder with impunity for his god, Jashin. That too was granted easily. Itachi and Kisame were inscrutable for differing reasons. Konan followed Pain's orders to the second, and she was often called his angel, carrying out his will. Various members came and went, either retiring or dying in high stakes missions. Pain, while giving out orders, managed to have something for everyone. But I wouldn't know what his goal was, or is. Lord Orochimaru...pardon."
"It's nothing. Don't worry about it," I say.
"Thank you. Orochimaru sought to get out ahead of the organization by monitoring the Nine-Tails, meaning Naruto Uzumaki. If it came down to it, he was planning to kill the boy, foiling Akatsuki's plans for a good while. It would be the harshest sort of delay."
"Why is that, you think?"
"It's because the Nine-Tails had to be sealed last, according to Pain. I have to assume there was more to his orders to keep out of trouble in Fire Country, but allegedly the statue wouldn't be able to contain such power."
"The heretical icon mentioned."
"Yes. Do you have someone on the inside, by chance?"
"Used to. Itachi gave me this information himself. He's left the organization."
"So he's defeating the surveillance on his trail?"
"We're working on a solution to that as well."
"Hm." Kabuto pulls a bit at one of his sweater sleeves. "You've certainly done well for yourself. More than I could have imagined, honestly. I think that whatever you find on your journey will definitely be better than any outdated information that I can give you. But I have notes written down for various things. If you need anything from me, I'm all too happy to provide it. On a personal level, I owe you much."
"Do I."
"You changed the trajectory of my life, on that strange day years ago. The least I could do is help out. But then...I'm also quite interested in what you mean to do next, with regards to the shinobi world. If you could generate such fear and awe in the land of beasts, who carry centuries of secrets and lore...then it must be of an even greater magnitude in the shinobi world."
"That much is true," I say in agreement. "I suppose there is one more thing, if you have an interest."
"What is it?"
"I mean to reach into the beyond properly, and unlock the true secrets of chakra. My belief is that the Sage of Six Paths meant chakra to connect, rather than divide. That the shinobi is a product of man, but one that need not be discarded in the quest for a better world."
"Hm."
"Things that mankind has meant for evil and destruction need not remain so. The one who sits before you is the unrivalled heavenly daughter. Nothing is beyond my power as time continues to flow."
"Interesting. So you mean to capture that power...where have you decided to begin?"
"The origins of jutsu. Out of one art came many, used to scorch and sunder the land and those who would dwell within."
"The rumoured art of creation. Much to think about." Kabuto rubs his chin and nods. "I'll start looking into it as a side project. Delivering the notes to your sister should be fine, I hope."
"Yes. I appreciate your willingness to help, Kabuto."
"Thank you for trusting me," he says with a bow of his head.
"Papa!"
"Papa we finished our puzzle!"
"Hoh, I see. That one was pretty challenging, so you did a good job. I suppose I'll make you ice cream for tonight."
"Thank you Papa!"
"Papa thank you!"
The children in their dresses decorated with flowers climb onto their father's lap. He smiles and holds them close. Dark green eyes and white hair both, tied into small bubbles that rest behind their heads.
"Girls, I want to properly introduce you to a special guest. This is Princess Lilith, the woman that your mothers work with. She's also the little sister of our Empress."
"The princess that Mommy talked about." There are little things to distinguish the two. This one has her hair sweeping gently to the left, and eyes that are darker and closer to her father's. Her sister has a smaller nose and puffier cheeks, with eyes that are a bit lighter and closer to her mother's.
"Hello, Princess."
"Hello, darlings. It's nice to see you. Yes, it is as your father said. I am Crown Princess Lilith Kobayashi, sister of our beloved Empress Midoriko. I came by to have a short chat with your father today, since I had some time in my schedule."
"My name's Saya," the first girl says proudly. "I'm the oldest by a whole two minutes, so I gotta protect my sister forever."
"My name's Sayaka," the second girl says, in a quieter tone. "Saya is my big sis because she came out of Mommy Sana first. I want to protect her too."
"I see. That's very good to know. Your daddy is quite the catch," I say while smiling at Kabuto. "So you managed to fire off enough magic for both of them, hm? I know how aggressive Sana can be, but you two pulled Sanae into your circle as well."
"I suppose so," Kabuto says with a light blush. "They were very...persuasive when it came to having children of their own."
"Clearly. Saya's mother is Sana, and Sayaka's mother is Sanae. Hard to miss from here. They're both precious, by the by. Nothing like seeing a family grow."
"Thank you. I've heard that you gained a younger sister of your own."
"Indeed I have." I pull out one of my always handy photographs of Rose. "Her name is Rosemary, and she should be around the same age as your girls, maybe a bit older."
"Hm." Kabuto looks at the photo, and the girls crowd around to get a glimpse. "You two look very similar...some would say that it only makes sense, but you had different mothers."
"She's pretty," Saya says. "Like Princess."
"Really pretty," Sayaka says. "Like Princess."
"I agree. She's quite dazzling, especially for her age," Kabuto says.
"You can hold onto that photo, and show it to the ladies once they arrive. I was hoping to see them too, but I suppose they're working late."
"Have been for a week or two now. They usually come in for a late dinner, and the girls are good about their bedtime. So we can have the usual family bonding. Sometimes I stay up alone and make sure that they get something to eat before bed."
"How lovely. They really struck gold with you, then."
He shrugs. "I just try my best. And my best is something I work on every day. Being a good father and husband is part of who I am."
"Indeed. And you should be proud of yourself, Kabuto. You've come a long way." I smile. "I know that Nono is watching over you, and she's proud of the man you are today."
"Thank you, Lili. I do have...something to ask. If you would hear it."
"Of course. What might you need of me, darling?"
"Aside from sending my apologies and congratulations to Fionne...I mentioned that I had siblings, and formed a family of sorts before being taken away from the orphanage."
"Yes."
"If you could find someone named Urushi. Tell him that...I'm free from ROOT, and that I walked the wrong path for a long time. But I'm alright now. I found myself, and I'm finally safe. I have a family, but I'll never forget the first one I had."
I nod. "I'll have a look for him, and deliver your message personally. As for your mother...grave robbing is an unsavoury activity, but there are those with expertise in such things. As you well know."
"Heh. Something like that."
"Repatriation. So that you can visit her properly."
He nods gratefully. "Hm. Always above and beyond, then."
"Always." I drink the last of my water and stand up. "It's getting close to dinner time, and I've some things to do at home, lest I get scolded incessantly."
"You already have that much responsibility, then. Interesting for someone so young."
"Getting it all out of the way now only makes sense. More time to take care of my babies once Magnolia House properly opens."
"And as Hokage?"
I snort. "If the old man can't be wrangled out of playing hopscotch with Academy kids before lunch, they're not going to do much better with me. I promise you that."
"Fair enough," he says with a smile. "Allow us to lead you out."
Kabuto and the girls escort me to the front entrance, where I put on my wedges again and check myself over with my compact.
"Ladies, gentleman. A pleasure seeing you, and hopefully it won't be too long before we meet again."
"The pleasure was ours, Princess. Take care," Kabuto says.
"Bye, Princess," Saya says.
"Bye-bye. Thank you for coming," Sayaka says.
I crouch and kiss the girls on their foreheads, before doing the same to a surprised Kabuto.
"Good evening, loves." A wink, and I head outside while focusing on my arm seal. Time to head back to the Leaf. Unfortunately, we've got business to tend.
"Never stops, does it. Hmph. We'll change all of that soon enough."
A brief moment of weightlessness, and then the world of serpents fades from my sight.
