Chapter 17- Arizona
She always makes my head spin. "dude I can't believe she told her dad you're getting married" Alex says "I told you"
"shut up Alex" I grumble and stand from the bucket.
"maybe it's about time" dad says
"not you too"
"you know your mom and I weren't together 2 months before I proposed and we got married, look how that turned out" he smiles
"no, no, no" I say "just no"
"it'll happen" Alex says "can I be best man?"
"I get to be" dad says smiling
"I'll arm wrestle you for it" Alex says holding out his arm
"alright" dad say putting his arm on the table and takes Alex's hand "three, two, one, go"
"oh my fucking god" I roll my eyes and walk out of the kennel. I just can't with those two. Don't get me wrong I'm so grateful they're on board with Callie and I but do they gotta be so. I'm cut off of my thoughts when I see a car pulling down the driveway. "guess she was right" I sigh, and wait. The car pulls up next to the building and the man, who looks a lot like Callie steps out. "where's my daughter"
"I'm not sure" I say looking around, he was wearing a black suit, his shoes were shiny black. And I had to bite my lip to not laugh as he walks across the gravel. "I want to speak with her NOW" he demands.
"I can try and find her sir, but this is a big property she could be anywhere"
"Calliope" he calls out "I know you're here"
"I think she may have taken one of the 4wheelers out, she could be anywhere, and I'm sorry but calling for her like that, she won't hear you" I say calmly, but I was anything but calm. He looks at me, in my dirty tank top and shorts, and scoffs. "you Robbins really are something"
"excuse me"
"come on Calliope let's go" he calls again "I need to get away from the smell of dog shit" I stand there and watch him. Shaking my head "you can go" I say nodding to his car "just down that way" I point to the driveway "the way you came in"
"I'm here for my daughter"
"with all due respect sir, I don't think she's going anywhere with you"
"she is, rather she likes it or not" he says stepping forward, closer to me. I didn't move, I stayed where I was standing when he first pulled up. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Alex, dad, and Callie standing in the doorway. Callie was behind Alex and dad. I take a deep breath "she's not going anywhere"
"you're holding her hostage" I have to laugh at that, as I shake my head "no, I'm not, she's free to do what she wants, because unlike you, I don't have her on a leash" it's the best I could come up with. I heard Alex make a noise, and when I look over he's covering his mouth. I don't think Mr. Torres, saw them standing there. "Calliope come on"
"she's not a dog"
"you need to shut your dirty mouth before I shut it for you"
"what are you going to do? You're on my property, I could call the sheriff, they'll be here in 5 minutes, they live over there" I say pointing to the farm across the road. He scoffs "he won't do anything, I know him"
"want to find out?" I say moving to the door "better yet, hey dad"
"yeah" dad replies, and I have to hold back a chuckle at the tone of voice he used
"will you call Teddy?"
"Teddy?" I nod and I see dad move away from the door. Teddy was the sheriff, not the deputy he thought I was going to call. I watch as he deflates "Calliope I just want to talk, will you come out here please" I look at the doorway and make eye contact with Callie, and nod to her. She nods back and steps out, coming to me, she takes my hand "can we talk alone"
"no" she shakes her head "you can say whatever you have to say in front of Arizona, or not at all"
"you're making a big mistake" his voice was low, and I thought I heard an almost growl in it
"no" she shakes her head "I don't believe I am, and you either get on board with it, or you'll lose me just like you lost Aria" I could tell that hit a nerve, but who was Aria. I look back at Alex, who shrugs.
"fine" Mr. Torres nods and turns to leave without saying anything.
"holy shit" I say once he's left the driveway "am I shaking?"
"you did great" Callie says holding me
"did I, cuz I feel like I could throw up" I hear her laugh
"you just stood up to Carlos Torres, one of the most powerful men in southern Minnesota, you have a right to feel like throwing up" it was that, that set me off and I ran around the building, and up came my lunch.
