A/N: Hey back with chapter 13! Getting ready to go into the next arc of the story. I am doing a double upload for 13 and 14 because I am working all weekend. Plus I am a bit overloaded trying to pace myself with my stories lol. Anyway, enjoy!
The early morning light filtered into the Hokage's office as a group of shinobi gathered before Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage. At the front stood Kakashi, Guy, Neji, Sasuke, and Sakura, all assembled in response to the Hokage's summons. The mood in the room was heavy, and though it was an ordinary C-rank mission, the air of importance hung over them like a storm cloud.
The Land of Grass had requested Konoha's assistance, and the nature of the mission, while not immediately dangerous, carried diplomatic weight. The death of the Land of Grass' genin squad during the Chunin Exams had sparked tension, especially after it was discovered that Orochimaru was the cause. Hiruzen knew that Konoha's reputation was on the line, and this mission was a delicate step to repair the fractured relationship between the two villages.
Hiruzen took a deep breath, surveying the group before him. Naruto and Hikari stood a little further back, their brows furrowed in confusion, wondering why they hadn't been included with the others. Hiruzen had a separate mission in mind for them, but for now, his focus was on the team in front of him.
"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Hiruzen began, his voice steady and commanding. His eyes settled on the team before him. "This mission, though classified as a C-rank, carries significant weight due to recent events involving the Land of Grass."
There was a collective shift in the room as the shinobi listened intently, knowing there was more beneath the surface of this assignment.
"As many of you are aware, during the Chunin Exams, we suffered the tragic loss of a genin squad from the Land of Grass," Hiruzen continued, his voice heavy with regret. "The cause of their deaths was tied directly to Orochimaru, and as a result, the Land of Grass is deeply troubled by the lack of protection their shinobi received while within our borders."
Sasuke's expression darkened at the mention of Orochimaru, his fists clenching at his sides. The name alone sent ripples of anger through him. Sakura noticed the shift in his demeanor but stayed silent, understanding the weight that name carried for her teammate.
"We cannot allow tensions to grow between Konoha and the Land of Grass," Hiruzen said gravely. "Therefore, I am assigning Team Guy and Team 7 to travel to the Land of Grass and aid them in an investigation. Their leadership believes that Orochimaru's presence in their region may be more extensive than we initially thought, and they require our assistance in both investigation and recovery efforts."
Might Guy, standing tall next to Kakashi, placed a hand over his heart, his usual exuberant energy somewhat tempered by the gravity of the mission. "Rest assured, Hokage-sama, my youthful team will not disappoint! We will mend the bonds between Konoha and the Land of Grass with the power of our springtime youth!" He gave a thumbs-up, his teeth flashing in his signature grin.
Kakashi gave a tired but amused glance toward Guy, "We'll handle the mission with the utmost care, Lord Hokage," he said, his voice calm yet authoritative. "We understand the importance of re-establishing relations with the Land of Grass."
Neji stood stoic as ever, his arms crossed, eyes focused. Though the mission wasn't a direct combat operation, he knew the importance of diplomacy, especially when it concerned Orochimaru, a name that was not suppose to be taken lightly.
Sakura gave a small nod, feeling the responsibility weighing on her. It wasn't a flashy mission, but she was excited to be going on another mission outside the village again. She did carry a bit of disappointment because it seemed like Naruto wasn't going with them.
Hiruzen nodded, pleased with the response from the group. "I trust you all to carry out this mission with the honor and care befitting Konoha's finest shinobi," he said. "Remember, this is as much about diplomacy as it is about reconnaissance. Do not underestimate the importance of reestablishing trust."
He paused before dismissing them. "You are to depart tomorrow at dawn. That will give you time to gather the necessary provisions."
As Kakashi and Guy acknowledged the orders, Hiruzen turned his attention to Naruto and Hikari, who still stood off to the side, clearly wondering why they hadn't been included in the briefing.
"You two," Hiruzen said, motioning for Naruto and Hikari to step forward, "will not be going on this mission."
Both Naruto and Hikari blinked in surprise, exchanging quick glances before turning back to the Hokage.
"What?! Why not?" Naruto exclaimed, clearly taken aback by the decision. "I thought we'd all be going together! And if Orochimaru's involved, shouldn't we—"
Hiruzen raised a hand to silence him, his expression softening slightly. "Naruto, Hikari, you both have a different mission, one that is just as important. This mission requires a different set of skills, and it will be led by Jiraiya."
Naruto's eyes widened at the mention of Jiraiya. "Pervy Sage? What's the mission?"
Hikari's expression was more reserved, but there was a spark of curiosity in her eyes as well. While she was disappointed to not join the others, anything involving Jiraiya meant this was important.
Hiruzen leaned back in his chair. "The mission you two will be taking on is one of retrieval. It's vital for Konoha's future. Jiraiya will explain more, but I will say this—it will also provide an opportunity for you both to grow stronger, under his training."
Naruto's usual grin returned, clearly excited about the prospect of another mission with Jiraiya, but Hikari's eyes narrowed slightly. "A retrieval mission…? What exactly are we retrieving?"
Before Hiruzen could respond, the doors to his office opened, and Jiraiya strode in with his usual confident swagger. "Ah, I see you've already started without me, Sensei," he said with a grin, giving a quick nod to Kakashi and Guy before focusing on Naruto and Hikari. "Don't worry, kids. This mission's gonna be right up your alley."
Naruto practically bounced in place. "Pervy Sage! So what's this mission all about? Who are we retrieving?"
Jiraiya chuckled, placing a hand on Naruto's head. "Patience, Naruto. We'll get to that soon enough. But trust me, this mission is going to be important—not just for Konoha, but for your training."
Hikari crossed her arms, still curious but satisfied with the explanation for now. "Alright," she said, her voice calm but determined. "We'll handle it."
Jiraiya gave her a nod of approval. "Good. You've got the right attitude, Hikari. You two will have your hands full with this one."
Hiruzen watched the exchange, a slight smile on his face. "You're in good hands with Jiraiya," he said, his voice filled with trust. "But remember, this mission is not just about strength—it's about understanding what's at stake for the future of Konoha."
Naruto puffed out his chest, clearly ready for the challenge. "We won't let you down, old man!"
Hiruzen chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "I trust that you won't, Naruto."
Kakashi, who had remained silent during the briefing, exchanged a glance with Jiraiya. He knew that if Jiraiya was involved, this retrieval mission was no simple task. It was something much bigger, and Kakashi wondered what it meant for Naruto and Hikari's futures.
With the formalities complete, Hiruzen dismissed the teams. Kakashi and Guy gathered Neji and Sakura, preparing to leave for the Land of Grass. As they walked out of the office, Team Guy and Team 7 exchanged farewells with Naruto and Hikari.
Sasuke remained silent, his mood still dark and stormy, but Naruto called out to him. "Hey, Sasuke! Don't go getting into too much trouble without me!"
Sasuke barely acknowledged Naruto's comment, his mind still consumed by thoughts of Orochimaru and Itachi. He gave a small grunt in response before following Kakashi out the door, leaving Naruto frowning.
"Man, he's been acting weird lately," Naruto muttered, scratching the back of his head.
Hikari shrugged, glancing after Sasuke as the others left. "He's got a lot on his mind."
Jiraiya clapped his hands together, snapping Naruto and Hikari back to attention. "Alright, enough chit-chat. We've got our own mission to prepare for. Meet me at the village gate in an hour. I'll fill you in on the details when we leave."

As the sun began its steady climb in the sky, Naruto and Hikari made their way through the quiet streets of Konoha, the early morning bustle not yet fully in swing. The cool breeze brushed past them, making the village feel calm despite the recent tension from the Akatsuki's visit. With their mission ahead, there was an unspoken sense of anticipation between them.
Naruto, walking with his usual energetic bounce, couldn't help but glance at Hikari, a broad grin plastered on his face. "Man, Hikari, I gotta tell you," he said, practically bubbling with excitement, "Pervy Sage has been teaching me some awesome stuff! You wouldn't believe it—he's even showing me my dad's moves! I'm learning the Rasengan!"
Hikari raised an eyebrow at Naruto's enthusiasm, a small, amused smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "The Rasengan, huh? It sounds like a very strong technique."
"Yeah!" Naruto beamed, his eyes lighting up as he spoke. "Pervy Sage said it's one of my dad's signature techniques! Can you believe that? I'm actually learning the same stuff my dad used to do! I mean, my dad was the Fourth Hokage, and I never knew until now! It's crazy!"
Hikari listened, her expression softening as Naruto spoke about his parents. There was a warmth in his voice, a kind of admiration she hadn't often heard from him before. It was clear that learning about his father had given Naruto a renewed sense of purpose.
"I still can't believe they were both so awesome," Naruto continued, his voice dropping slightly, more contemplative. "My dad was the Fourth Hokage, and my mom was from the Uzumaki Clan. Pervy Sage told me all about them… how they loved me. It's weird, you know? I always thought I didn't have anyone, but now… now I know they cared about me the whole time."
Hikari glanced at Naruto, her smile small but genuine. "I'm glad you found out the truth, Naruto. Knowing where you come from… it's important."
Naruto's grin widened at her words. "Yeah! I mean, it doesn't change how I've lived so far, but it makes me want to live up to them even more. I'm gonna be the greatest Hokage, just like my dad!"
They continued to walk in companionable silence for a moment before Naruto, ever curious, glanced at Hikari with a thoughtful look. "What about you, Hikari? You've never really talked about your parents. What were they like?"
Hikari's steps faltered slightly at the question, but she quickly recovered. Her eyes turned downcast for a moment as memories from her past resurfaced—images of her parents, their smiles, their voices, their warmth. It had been a long time since she'd thought about them in such detail.
"My parents were… everything to me," Hikari said softly, her voice carrying a weight of emotion that Naruto hadn't heard before. "I was really close to them. My mother, especially. She was kind… always smiling. And my father… he was strict, but he cared deeply for me. They both did."
Naruto remained silent, sensing the shift in her mood. He could tell that talking about them wasn't easy for her, but he didn't interrupt, letting her continue at her own pace.
"They were great shinobi in the Uchiha Clan, and back then, things were… different," Hikari continued, her gaze distant as she recalled the past. "We lived during a time of constant war between the Senju and the Uchiha. My parents fought in those wars. They were strong… brave. But in the end, they were taken from me when I was still young."
Hikari paused, her voice faltering for a moment. "Losing them was hard. I… I lost a part of myself that day when I found out they weren't coming back. I've spent so long trying to figure out who I am without them."
Naruto frowned, his heart aching for Hikari. He had known loss too, but hearing Hikari's story, it made him remember she had went through just as much, if not more than him. "I'm sorry, Hikari," Naruto said quietly, his voice sincere. "That sounds… really tough."
Hikari shook her head, offering a small smile. "It's alright. I've had a long time to come to terms with it. But… hearing about your parents, and seeing how you've dealt with everything… it makes me want to move forward too."
Naruto smiled back at her, feeling a sense of understanding between them. "We're both gonna move forward, Hikari. And we're both gonna get stronger—together. No matter what."
Hikari chuckled softly at Naruto's unyielding optimism. "Yeah, I think you're right."
Their conversation trailed off as they neared the village gates, the towering wooden structure marking the boundary between Konoha and the world beyond. As they approached, they spotted a familiar figure leaning casually against the gate, arms crossed over his chest.
Jiraiya was waiting for them, his ever-present grin plastered on his face as he watched the two approach. "Took you two long enough," he called out, straightening up and walking toward them. "I was starting to think you'd both decided to take a nap before our mission."
Naruto grinned as he jogged up to his mentor. "Nah, we're ready to go! Just had to get some stuff sorted."
Jiraiya chuckled, ruffling Naruto's hair. "Good. This mission is gonna be important, and it's not just a walk in the park. You two are going to learn a lot along the way."
Hikari gave a respectful nod to Jiraiya as she stopped beside Naruto. "We're ready."
Jiraiya eyed the two of them for a moment, his expression becoming more serious. "You'd better be. The person we're going to find is someone very important to the future of Konoha. And along the way, I'll be training you both. There's a lot at stake, and I need to make sure you're prepared."
Naruto, always eager for a challenge, punched the air in excitement. "Don't worry, Pervy Sage! We're totally ready for whatever comes our way!"
Jiraiya smirked at Naruto's enthusiasm before turning his gaze to Hikari. "And you, Hikari. I've heard about your skills—your Sharingan, your techniques. I'm going to push you just as hard as Naruto. We're going to make sure that by the end of this mission, you're both stronger than you've ever been."
Hikari's eyes gleamed with determination. "I'm ready."
"Good," Jiraiya said, his tone resolute. "Then let's get moving. We've got a long journey ahead of us."
With that, the three of them set off, leaving the gates of Konoha behind as they ventured into the world beyond. The mission ahead was shrouded in mystery, but the sense of purpose burned brightly in their hearts. Together, they would face whatever challenges lay ahead—and grow stronger for the battles to come.
