The sun hung high in the sky, casting warm rays through the thick trees as Naruto, Hikari, and Jiraiya traveled the winding forest path. Despite the peaceful surroundings, there was a palpable tension in the air—an undercurrent of anticipation as they ventured further from the safety of Konoha. It had been a few days since they'd left, and Naruto was practically bouncing with energy, his curiosity impossible to contain.
"So, Pervy Sage," Naruto began, breaking the silence with his usual boisterous tone, "you still haven't told us who we're supposed to be retrieving and it's been days! Come on, spill the beans! Who is this person?"
Jiraiya, walking slightly ahead, chuckled at Naruto's impatience. He cast a sideways glance at the blonde shinobi and smirked. "You'll find out soon enough, Naruto. But I suppose it won't hurt to give you a bit more context now."
He slowed his pace, turning to face both Naruto and Hikari as they walked alongside him. His tone shifted, becoming more serious. "We're looking for Tsunade Senju—one of my former teammates and one of the three Legendary Sannin."
Naruto's eyes widened in shock. "Wait, Tsunade? The Super Medic Lady? You mean she's like you and Orochimaru?"
Jiraiya nodded. "That's right. She's just as strong as Orochimaru and me, but more importantly, she's the best medical-nin this world has ever seen. Her skills are unmatched, and she has a deep understanding of combat too. But there's something even more significant about her."
Hikari remained silent, her eyes narrowing slightly at the mention of the Senju clan. The subtle tension in her posture didn't go unnoticed by Jiraiya, who continued talking but kept an eye on her reaction.
"Tsunade is the future of the village," Jiraiya added, his tone growing more serious. "She's the one the Hokage has chosen to succeed him as the Fifth Hokage. Konoha needs her now more than ever."
Naruto's jaw dropped. "The old man's stepping down? He's gonna retire?"
Jiraiya nodded slowly, the weight of his words hanging in the air. "Sensei is getting older, Naruto. He's been Hokage for a long time, and the recent attacks, especially with Orochimaru, have taken a toll on him. He knows it's time for someone younger to take over."
Naruto's face twisted in thought. "But why Tsunade? I mean, she sounds strong and all, but would she wanna be Hokage? I never seen her in the village before."
Jiraiya's expression darkened slightly. "Tsunade's past is complicated. She's lost a lot of people close to her, and it's made her… distant. Getting her to come back and take up the mantle of Hokage won't be easy. But she's the only one who can handle the responsibility. Konoha needs her leadership now."
As Jiraiya spoke, Hikari's fists clenched slightly, and her face twisted into a faint grimace at the mention of Tsunade's surname. She kept her gaze forward, but Jiraiya, ever observant, noticed the subtle reaction. He paused for a moment, glancing at her from the corner of his eye.
"Hikari," Jiraiya said gently, "I can see you're not exactly thrilled by the fact that Tsunade is a Senju."
Hikari's eyes flickered with a mixture of emotions—memories of the Warring States era, of the brutal battles between the Uchiha and the Senju. "She's a Senju… I thought they were all gone now too," she said quietly, a hint of bitterness in her voice.
Jiraiya sighed, understanding the weight of Hikari's history. "I get it. You've got reasons not to trust the Senju, especially with everything that happened in your time. But I promise you, Tsunade isn't what you think. She's different from those old days, and she's been through a lot. She doesn't carry what ever beef was between the Senju and the Uchiha clan."
Hikari remained silent, but Jiraiya continued, his tone softening. "Tsunade is one of the best people I know. She's the best medic in the world, and if anyone can heal the scars of the past, it's her. Trust me, you'll see."
Hikari nodded slowly, though her expression remained guarded. The rivalry between the Uchiha and Senju had been etched deeply into her past, and even though she knew the world had changed, old wounds still ran deep. Still, she was willing to trust Jiraiya's judgment for now.
Naruto, completely oblivious to the tension between Hikari and the mention of the Senju, pressed on with his questions. "So, if she's that awesome, why wouldn't she wanna be Hokage? I mean, if I had a chance to be Hokage, I'd take it in a heartbeat!"
Jiraiya chuckled softly, though there was a sadness in his eyes. "Tsunade's lost a lot of people. She lost her brother and the man she loved in battle, both during times of war. That kind of loss changes you, Naruto. It makes you question whether fighting and leading is worth it."
Naruto frowned, his heart aching for someone he hadn't even met yet. "That sounds… rough."
"It is," Jiraiya agreed. "That's why we're going to have to convince her to come back. It's not just about her strength—it's about what she represents. Konoha needs a Hokage who can heal the village, physically and spiritually."
As they continued walking, the conversation shifted slightly, and Naruto's natural curiosity took over once again. "So, Pervy Sage, you said we'd be training on this trip, right? What kinda stuff are you gonna teach us?"
Jiraiya grinned, clearly expecting the question. "Well, Naruto, I've got a few things in mind. First, we're going to work on both your taijutsu and ninjutsu. You've got the basics down, but there's always room for improvement. And trust me, you'll need to get stronger if you want to stand even a slight chance against the Akatsuki."
Naruto's eyes lit up with excitement. "Sweet! I've been working on my Rasengan, and I'm getting better every day!"
Jiraiya nodded approvingly. "That's good, but don't forget, there's more to being a ninja than just hitting hard. You need to work on your defense and your ability to strategize in battle."
Naruto pouted slightly. "I know, I know. But what about that genjutsu stuff you mentioned? I'm not really good at it."
"Exactly," Jiraiya replied. "That's why we're going to focus on that too. You need to learn how to recognize and counter genjutsu. If you get caught in one during a fight, it could be the end for you. You can't just punch your way out of everything."
Naruto grumbled, clearly not thrilled about the prospect of genjutsu training. "Fine, fine. I'll learn it."
Jiraiya turned to Hikari, his expression thoughtful. "Hikari, you've got experience with genjutsu, right? Your Sharingan gives you an advantage, but how much do you actually know?"
Hikari nodded slightly. "I've learned some Uchiha Clan techniques. I'm not an expert, but I can cast and break mid-level genjutsu."
"Good," Jiraiya said, grinning. "You'll help Naruto with that, and he'll help you improve your taijutsu and ninjutsu. The more you push each other, the stronger you'll both get."
Naruto blinked, glancing at Hikari. "Wait, I'm supposed to teach her? But she's already better than me at a lot of this stuff!"
Hikari gave a small, amused smile. "We all have things to learn, Naruto."
Jiraiya clapped his hands together, drawing their attention. "That's right. No one's perfect, and that includes me—though I'm pretty close." He winked, earning an eye-roll from Naruto and a raised eyebrow from Hikari.
The trio continued down the forest path, the conversation lightening as they prepared for the challenges ahead. As they walked, Naruto couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement bubbling within him. He was learning more every day, and with Hikari and Jiraiya by his side, he felt like he could take on anything.
But even as the journey continued, there was an underlying tension in the air—an unspoken understanding that the battles they had faced so far were only the beginning. Orochimaru was still out there, the Akatsuki were lurking in the shadows, and now, the fate of the village rested on convincing Tsunade to take up the mantle of Hokage.
As the sun continued to dip below the horizon, casting a warm orange glow across the landscape, the trio reached a small town nestled at the edge of the forest. It was a modest place, with only a few shops, inns, and houses scattered along the main road. Despite its size, the town had an air of quiet serenity, and the sight of it brought a sense of relief to Naruto and Hikari after the long day of traveling.
"Looks like we'll be staying here for the night," Jiraiya said, gesturing to a nearby inn. "We'll rest up, and tomorrow we'll continue the journey. We're getting closer, but there's still a way to go before we find Tsunade."
Naruto's stomach growled loudly, causing him to grin sheepishly. "Finally! I've been starving for hours! I hope they've got ramen!"
Hikari chuckled softly. "You and ramen… I'm starting to think you'd eat it for every meal if you could."
"I would!" Naruto replied proudly, puffing out his chest. "Ramen is the food of champions! You should try it more often, Hikari!"
Jiraiya rolled his eyes, but there was an affectionate smile on his face. "Alright, alright. Let's get something to eat and rest. Tomorrow's going to be another long day."
The trio made their way to the inn, where they booked a room for the night. Once they settled in and dropped off their things, they headed to the inn's small dining area, which served simple but hearty meals. Naruto immediately ordered a bowl of ramen, while Hikari opted for something lighter—a simple soup and rice. Jiraiya, ever the gourmand, ordered a selection of different dishes.
As they ate, the conversation shifted to lighter topics, with Naruto excitedly recounting his training and how much he'd improved. He even started demonstrating his progress with the Rasengan using a small, half-filled water balloon, much to the amusement of the other patrons.
Afterward, they retired to their rooms for the night, with Naruto and Hikari sharing a room while Jiraiya took one for himself. As they settled into their beds, the sound of the quiet town outside their window, Naruto couldn't help but think about everything that had happened so far—and everything that was still to come.
He glanced over at Hikari, who was already lying down, her eyes closed. "Hey, Hikari?"
"Hmm?" she responded sleepily.
"I'm glad we're on this mission together. I mean… I know we've been through a lot, but I think we make a pretty good team."
Hikari opened her eyes and looked over at him, offering a small, genuine smile. "Yeah, we do. Let's keep getting stronger together."
Naruto grinned, feeling a warmth in his chest. "Yeah. We will."
With that, the two of them drifted off to sleep, their thoughts filled with the challenges ahead and the bonds they were forming. Tomorrow, the real journey would begin—both in finding Tsunade and in growing stronger together.
As the moonlight bathed the quiet town in a silver glow, Jiraiya stood by the window of his room, watching the stars. His thoughts lingered on the mission, on Tsunade, and on the two young shinobi who were quickly becoming like his own children.
"We'll find you, Tsunade," he whispered to himself. "And when we do, we'll bring you back home."
With that, he turned away from the window and prepared for the long road ahead.
I know this chapter was not really long. This is why hopefully over my work weekend, I can come back rejuvenated. I'll probably try to get an upload late Sunday or Early Monday. Thanks for reading!
