The world around them shifted suddenly, the colors fading into a kaleidoscope of swirling blues, purples, and blacks. Bolin, Mako, Asami, and Korra found themselves standing on what seemed to be a floating platform in the middle of an infinite void. Strange symbols floated through the air, and a pulsating hum reverberated around them as if they had been sucked into another dimension. Bolin rubbed his eyes, trying to make sense of the bizarre landscape.
"What... what the heck is going on?" Mako asked, his voice tense. He looked down at his hands, only to gasp. His hands weren't his hands anymore—they were shimmering, slightly translucent, with lines of light running across them like he was made of holographic data.
"Am I... am I glowing?!" Asami added, her voice wavering as she stared at her arms. Her usually impeccable outfit now appeared pixelated, as if she had been transformed into a character from a video game. "This is not some new Equalist trick, is it?"
"No, this is something else entirely..." Korra said, eyes wide as she examined herself. Her usual Water Tribe attire had been replaced by elaborate armor, resembling that of an ancient warrior, complete with glowing markings across her body. "I can feel something different... like I'm not even human anymore."
Suddenly, Bolin burst out laughing. "Oh man, this is amazing! Look at me!" He twirled around, his body shimmering in the same holographic form as the others. His outfit had shifted to something resembling a warrior from a fantasy card game—metallic gauntlets, green and brown armor, and a giant stone hammer strapped to his back. "I'm like some kind of Earth-bending warrior spirit! This is awesome!"
Mako frowned. "Bolin, this is not awesome. We don't even know where we are. Or what we are!"
"Calm down, Mako," Bolin said, flexing his glowing arms. "You're glowing too! You could be like some super-powered fire spirit. Fire Lord Mako, defender of the flame!" Bolin struck a dramatic pose, pretending to shoot fireballs from his hands, complete with sound effects. "Whoosh! Pew pew!"
"Bolin, stop playing around," Korra said, her tone serious. "This... this feels real. We're not in Republic City anymore." She surveyed their surroundings, and as if on cue, a floating structure appeared in the distance, slowly materializing as a massive stone arena. Giant stone slabs floated in the air, adorned with more glowing symbols, and across the horizon were towering creatures—dragons, warriors, and monsters, all of them flickering with the same holographic energy.
Asami took a cautious step forward. "Wait a minute... this looks familiar." Her sharp eyes darted between the glowing creatures and the battlefield. "I've seen this before."
Mako furrowed his brow. "Seen what before?"
"The creatures, the environment... it's just like Duel Monsters," Asami said. "You know, that card game people have been obsessed with lately? These monsters are just like the ones from the cards."
Korra blinked. "Wait, are you saying we've been turned into some kind of Duel Monsters... characters?"
Before Asami could answer, a booming voice echoed from the void. "Welcome, Duel Monsters spirits!"
The group looked around, trying to find the source of the voice, but all they saw was the vast expanse of the dueling arena and towering monsters.
"You have been chosen to participate in the eternal duel," the voice continued. "Your essence has been bound to the spirit of the cards. Now, fight for survival and victory!"
Suddenly, the platform they were standing on lit up, and four figures appeared across from them—dark, menacing figures with glowing red eyes and shadowy forms. The air crackled with tension as the arena roared to life, energy pulsating from the ground below them.
"Great, so not only are we trapped in some weird card game world, but we're expected to fight too?" Mako groaned.
"This just keeps getting better and better," Korra muttered, summoning her usual courage as she readied herself for whatever was about to come. "Okay, everyone stay calm. Let's figure out what's going on before we panic."
Bolin, on the other hand, didn't seem fazed at all. He was busy admiring his reflection in one of the glowing energy barriers. "Look at me, I'm a Duel Monster! I wonder what kind of powers I have! Maybe I can summon a giant rock dragon or—"
"Focus, Bolin!" Mako snapped. "This isn't a game!"
"Oh, but it is a game," a sinister voice hissed, and a shadowy figure stepped forward from the opposite side of the arena. It was a cloaked figure, half-hidden in darkness, with an ominous aura surrounding them. "You're in the world of Duel Monsters now, and only the strongest will survive."
Korra clenched her fists. "Fine. We'll play your game, but we're getting out of here when we're done."
"Typical Avatar," the shadow figure sneered. "Always so sure of yourself. But let's see how you fare against my deck!" With a wave of their hand, the arena glowed brighter, and three massive monsters appeared before the group: a fearsome dragon, a giant stone golem, and a winged beast with talons of lightning.
Mako stepped forward, flames already flickering in his hands. "If this is some kind of duel, then we fight back. Let's go!"
Korra nodded, taking her position next to him. "We've faced worse before."
"Yeah, but we've never been holograms in a card game," Bolin muttered under his breath before shaking it off. "Alright, Earth spirit Bolin, reporting for duty! Let's do this!"
The battle erupted in a flash of light. Mako launched a stream of fire at the winged beast, Korra summoned a torrent of water to clash with the stone golem, and Bolin, much to his own surprise, called forth a massive wall of earth to block the dragon's attack.
Asami, ever the strategist, scanned the battlefield and noticed the monsters had weak points—small gaps in their armor, barely visible under the glowing energy. "Everyone, aim for the weak spots! They're vulnerable there!"
"Right!" Mako called, focusing his next attack on the gap in the winged beast's chest. His fire tore through the creature, causing it to roar in pain and dissolve into particles of light.
Korra followed suit, smashing her water whip into the golem's side, breaking apart its stone armor. With a final strike, the golem crumbled into pieces.
Bolin, meanwhile, was busy dodging the dragon's fiery breath. "Oh come on, not the dragon! Why do I always get the dragon?" He ducked behind his earth wall, barely avoiding another blast. "This is not how I imagined my Duel Monsters debut!"
Suddenly, the dragon roared, and Bolin's eyes widened. "Wait a minute... this is just a dream, isn't it?"
The others paused mid-fight, turning to look at him. "What?" Mako asked, confused.
Bolin pointed at the dragon. "Think about it! We got sucked into some crazy card game world, we're fighting holographic monsters, and I'm an Earth-bending spirit with a giant hammer. This isn't real—it's a dream! That explains everything!"
Korra raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure about that?"
Bolin nodded enthusiastically. "Oh yeah, I'm sure. Watch this!" He took a deep breath, squeezed his eyes shut, and shouted, "Wake up, Bolin!"
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the world began to shimmer, and the monsters faded away into mist. The arena vanished, replaced by a soft white light.
When Bolin opened his eyes again, he was lying on a couch in Republic City, the others standing around him, looking confused.
"Bolin, what happened?" Asami asked.
He sat up, grinning. "I told you! It was all just a dream. No crazy Duel Monsters world, no holographic spirits—just a weird dream."
Korra crossed her arms, smirking. "A dream, huh?"
"Yep!" Bolin said proudly. "A pretty awesome one too, but still a dream."
Mako sighed in relief. "Well, at least that's over."
But just as they were about to relax, Bolin's eyes widened. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a glowing Duel Monsters card with his face on it.
"Uh... guys?"
Korra groaned. "You've got to be kidding me."
