And the thunder rolls

Hermione was instantly awake, her heart in her throat. She looked around the dark room, the shapes of her bedroom slowly coming into focus, becoming less like monsters out to get her and more like the furniture that housed all her current worldly goods.

Feeling her heart start to calm, uncertain of what had woken her, Hermione started to let sleep claim her once again…

A flash of light lit up the room, filtering through Hermione's closed eyelids. She was sat up in her bed before she'd even opened her eyes. The crack of thunder soon followed and Hermione's heart was back in her throat, her pulse hammering wildly in her throat.

It was ridiculous to still be scared of the weather.

Illogical.

However, it was the memories that started to flood her thoughts that came with it that kept the feat going strong.

She swallowed against her dry throat, staring at the window with the curtains still open, waiting for the next flash of lightning. It didn't take long for the room to light up.

With a small squeak emitting from her, Hermione had one foot out of her bed when the door opened, causing the squeak to evolve into a scream.

"Hermione," Sirius whispered stepping into the room, "it's just me." She blinked rapidly at the light from his wand chasing away the shadows of the room.

"I didn't think I'd made a noise this time," she whispered back.

"You didn't." Sirius closed the door, motioning for her to move over. "I was awake and thought it best to check on you."

"I don't need babysitting, Sirius," Hermione said quietly, even though her body was moving to make space for Sirius to join her.

"Of course you don't." She could still see the smirk on his face when the wand light went out. "I do."

The thunder rumbled above them. "It's already moving away," she commented, lying down.

"But just in case it comes back, I'll be right here," he said earnestly, lying back and pulling the covers over him.

She searched for his hand, finding it quickly. "Thank you."

Sirius pulled her hand up, placing a light kiss on the back of it. "Anytime. Just don't let the others know I don't like thunder."

"I promise," she said with a small laugh, squeezing his hand and not letting go.
