Chapter 17: Diving Deep
"So, you've already told your parents that you "need" to use the toilet?" Bluey asked Muffin as the four girls walked through the maze of bookshelves.
"Yep!" Replied Muffin, "You said what you said, and I did what you said!" The three girls laughed at Muffin's statement.
"Excuse me, ladies!" A frantic voice yelled as he pushed through the group of girls. Little did he realize, he had accidentally dropped a huge, heavy book in the process.
"Oh! Excuse me," Bluey yelled, "You dropped your-!" Before Bluey could finish her sentence, the grown Cavapoo had already left the girls' sight.
"What was that all about?" Bingo asked, trying to regain her composure
"I don't know," Socks said, "he looked like he was in such a hurry, not to mention, scared."
"Woah, girls, come look at this!" Bluey exclaimed as she read the following book title: "The Book of Myths and Legends"
"Do you think this book has the answers we need?" Bingo asked as she gasped.
"I have a feeling we might!" Socks said. As the four girls sat down on the floor, Bluey opened up the book and read the very first page: "many, many years ago, an ancient colorful canine fell from the heavens. No one knows exactly where she came from, but some claimed and believed that she was an alien."
"Uh, who's she?" Bingo asked, becoming more curious as she read along.
Bluey skipped a couple of sentences, trying to find out who this 'she' is.
"Ah! Here we go!" Bluey exclaimed. The girls began to read once more: "This soon to be heroic canine was called 'Colorful hero' in English, but was called 'Spluffo' in a different language."
"Spluffo?! What a weird name!" Muffin said as she raised an eyebrow.
"I like that name!" Bingo said, "It gives me such a colorful vibe!"
"Ooh, ooh, wait! Is the other thing in this book?" Socks said as she took the book out of Bluey's hands.
"What other thing?" Bluey asked. Socks flipped through three pages and she finally found what she was looking for.
"Ah-ha, here we go!" Socks exclaimed, "The Voice Of Evil!"
"The Voice Of Evil?!" The three Heelers interjected, surprised by what they were hearing.
"I forgot to tell you girls about it this morning, aunt Chilli and da-da were talking about this thing called the Voice Of Evil, though they don't exactly know what it is. They think that it might be related to the Voice Of Good."
"I like where this is going!" Muffin said, "Do you know anything else about it?"
"No, not really," Socks said as she read the back of the page, "…Or, maybe I do! Listen to this!" She started reading the page: "Spluffo banished an evil entity after he terrorized his own clan called the Gem Mongrels. Both Spluffo and the entity disappeared into thin air, but legend has it that both their voices can be heard in Brisbane woods on this very day."
"Isn't that not too far from here?" Bluey asked.
"I think." Socks said as she closed the book.
"So if we all go to Brisbane woods, then we'll be able to find one of the voices?" Bingo asked Socks.
"Maybe…"
"Girls! We're ready to go home!" Chilli's voice called out from the maze of bookshelves.
"What are we gonna do with this book?" Socks asked. Bluey thought for a moment, then she gasped, "We'll hide it!" She exclaimed as she took the book from Socks' hands and placed it underneath the bottom of the bookshelf where no one but the Heeler girls could ever find it.
"Come on, girls," Bluey said as she stood up, "mum's probably worried about us." As the four girls made their way towards their parents, their minds thought back to the myths and legends book.
That Spluffo dog falling from the sky? Evil entity that she had to defeat? Ancient language? Gem Mongrels? They thought all at once. The questions bounced around in their brains like a bouncy ball, making them even more curious about "The Voice Of Good," but they're just now knowing from Socks' new information that there's now another voice called "The Voice Of Evil." In that brief moment, Bluey had thought back to what her mother said to her father, "Why don't you sleep it off for tonight, then in the morning you can try to figure out what your boss was saying about this… fairytale."
Bluey suddenly stopped in her tracks when that last word echoed through her head.
"B-Bluey," Muffin said, "w-what gives? Why have you-?"
"I-I… don't think this whole thing with… Spluffo… is a fairytale, girls…" Bluey said, eyeing back at the three girls.
"W-What…?!" Bingo and Muffin shouted as they stammered.
"Eh, I kinda knew that." Socks said as she shrugged her shoulders.
