Chapter Three
Lockwood's POV:
I took a while before Lucy reached the top of the stairs, where I was waiting.
"What did you want to show me?" Lucy said to me as I led her to the nearest room.
"This."
"I don't see anything."
I turned to look in the room. "She was there before..."
"Who?"
"There was this ghost and... I could hear what she was saying."
"You what?"
"I said I could hear her."
"What was she doing?"
"Sketching I think. Then I think she waved at me."
There was a knock on the door and we both swirled around.
"Sorry for being a bit... ugh... late." It was George, carrying a bag that looked so heavy that it would fall apart. "This place has so much history. And I think there's something else that you would findinteresting."
"Definitely not as interesting as what we were discussing before you came in." Lucy said putting her hands on her hips.
"I doubt that." George said, swinging the bag onto the table and nearly hitting Skull with his rapier in the process. "What were you two talking about anyway?"
"Lockwood says he heard a ghost." Lucy said bluntly.
"Heard ashecould make out what it was saying?" George unzipped the bag, pulling out a ginormous file.
"Probably."
"She wasn't saying much." I interjected. "Just sort of muttering something, sounded like a song."
"Did she said anything else?" George opened the file.
I shrugged. "I think she might've said hi when she noticed me, but I couldn't really make it out."
"Hmm." He skimmed through the file.
"Shh!" Lucy put a finger to her lips. "I can hear something."
"What?" George was ready to take notes again.
"Sounds like knives being scraped along a chalkboard."
"Might be that one guy." George mumbled. "Worked with Bickerstaff."
"Bickerstaff?" I turned to George.
"Yes. Seems like this mansion has a lot of history that involves Bickerstaff. "
"It stopped." Lucy said.
"Since we're all here," I said as the kettle in the kitchen whistled, "let's have some tea and see what you have here George." I gestured to the file.
Lucy's POV:
Skull was silent for almost the whole night, except for muttering insults to George as he almost got skimmed by his rapier. I supposed he was bothered by our earlier conversation.
"Anything from the skull?" Lockwood spoke up.
"Not really. He's been pretty silent." I replied, snatching a glance at said ghost who happened to be on the far side of the room.
"Is he always like this?" George seemed to be really obsessed with his notes today.
"No. He's usually talking my ear off."
"Anyway," George looked back at his file, "what I've brought here is most of the history of this mansion." He flipped to the middle. "And here is where I've written down the people most likely to come back." He produced some sheets of paper from the file.
"If that file is containing all the information on the hauntings, then what's in the bag?" Lockwood gestured to the bag at George's feet.
"Supplies." George opened the bag to reveal tons of salt bombs, magnesium flares, and other nick knacks that he thought would be useful. "There are probably more ghosts in this mansion than the supplies you twobrought, so I thought these should come in handy."
"So I'm guessing we're splitting up?" I said to Lockwood.
"Yep." Lockwood grinned. "Usual pairings. George and I will take the upstairs, Luce you take the skull and explore here on the main floor."
"Great."Skull said sarcastically, though I doubt I'd have to tell you for you to know that.
