After walking through the eerie landscape of dead animals for what felt like hours, we finally spotted something ahead—a small, abandoned cabin nestled between the trees. It looked old, the wood weathered and the windows cracked, but it was still standing. Given the state of the world, it was probably the best shelter we could hope for.

Without a word, I led the group toward it. As we got closer, I could hear the others murmuring behind me.

"Think it's safe?" Leon asked, his hand resting on one of his weapons.

Chris approached the cabin cautiously, eyes scanning the surroundings. "It's not ideal, but it's better than staying out in the open. We can fortify it if we need to."

Claire peered through one of the broken windows. "No signs of life in there, at least. Could've been abandoned for years."

Jill stepped forward, her hand on the door handle. "Let's check it out, make sure there aren't any surprises."

I stood back as they took the lead, watching silently. The cabin was far from perfect, but it was shelter, and in this world, that counted for a lot.

Jill pushed the door open with a creak, and we all stepped inside, ready for whatever we might find.
