Nick Fury didn't like Poseidon. To this day their relationship with each other is strained at best. The main reason was because of Percy. When Percy was younger Percy often spoke of how he was going to punch his father in his face if he met him. Nick thought it was just an expression until he actually did ... He punched Poseidon in the face when they met. Their relationship will never be like the one Nick has with Percy.
Percy never called Poseidon Dad. Dad was for Nick, and Fury was grateful for that. But Poseidon thought that a mere mortal taking his 'rightful' place is smite worthy. Percy wasn't happy with that. Percy didn't even call Poseidon Father. That title has only been in use since very recently and was still used rarely at Poseidon. Most of the time Percy used it to manipulate Poseidon. It was… unsettling... at the least to see a Greek god acting like a puppy. Percy was quite good at the ol' carrot and stick method. But that didn't mean Nick had to like the god.
On Percy's 15th birthday, Nick and Phil had a small birthday party with their closest friends when Poseidon showed up and ruined the day. Nick won't forget how defeated his cheerful boy looked after Poseidon left. Percy was already burdened with the Great Prophecy back then and the god's visit made the day turn sour. Especially during the time, tensions were high.
Percy's 15th Birthday Party
Percy had a bright smile on his face as he clapped his hands together to his birthday song. Tyson clapped along a bit out of time but singing along well. Percy had a blue birthday cone hat on the top of his head. Everyone had one, even Nick and Phil had one too. Percy couldn't stop grinning when he looked at their direction. Percy had a separate party day with all his friends from school and a random guy who Percy invited that was nearby the laser maze, they went and did all the games and activities. But today it was a party with cakes and presents, so right now his closest friends and the few other friends who were not able to come that day will come.
Then just as Percy finished blowing out the candles on the blue cake there was a loud knocking sound.
Percy perked up "They must be here now! I thought they said, they will come a bit later! They must have finished quickly." Percy looked at his cake "Aww man, they couldn't have come 2 minutes faster? I already blew out the candles!"
Mark chuckled "Bro, just blow it twice. Twice the wishes, twice the luck" he said making Percy get a glint in his eyes
Sarah rolled her eyes "No ones stopping you from blowing it out twice." Sarah moved to get another match "I'll go get the matches birthday boy, you go and close your eyes again " Percy let out a loud laugh
"Should I go back inside my room so you can turn off the lights again? " he said making the group join in the laughter
"I'll go get the door " Phil said walking towards the front door.
Phil opened it expecting the rest of his nephew's mortal and some potential demigod friends- mainly Grover (I am a satyr thank you very much!) . Only to see Poseidon.
"Uncle Phil?" Percy asked when Phil froze at the door "Uh, did they actually bring the toilet seat? I thought that it was a joke- Oh" Percy's eyes went wide at Poseidons appearance.
Some of his friends began to whisper "Hey, that guy looks a lot like Percy"
"Isn't Percy adopted? Is that his bio-dad? "
"Why is he here? Percy didn't invite him didn't he?"
All of Percy's friends were concerned for him.
Poseidon poked his head in. Poseidon was wearing Bermuda shorts, a Hawaiian shirt and Birkenstocks. Poseidon's sea-green eyes twinkled as he glanced around the room. He wore a battered cap decorated with fishing lures. It said NEPTUNE'S LUCKY FISHING HAT.
"Pos—" Phil stopped himself. Phil turned to look at Nick and Percy. Nick had an unreadable expression (like he always does) But Nick had a slight tick in his forehead, Nick also wasn't thrilled with Poseidon's appearance.
The bright grin on Percy's face dimmed. His expression was like his dads. Unreadable.
"I know I don't have an invitation, but I couldn't miss Percy's fifteenth birthday," Poseidon said. "Why, if this were Sparta, Percy would be a man today!"
"That's true," Jason muttered. "We learned it in ancient history. Don't know why that's got to do with it though…" It was Mark's turn to elbow Jason "Yes very nice timing principal's son"
Sarah frowned "Sir, I don't think you should-" Percy stood up, a strained smile on his face
"It's alright Sarah… I'll go see what he wants" Percy looked to Nick. Nick gave a nod and squeezed his son's shoulder. "I'll be right behind you."
The tension in Percy's shouldered released a bit "Thanks dad…" Percy turned his attention to his guests. Tyson looked worried, Tyson loved Poseidon, but he also did not want to ruin Percy's day. His friends didn't know everything, but enough to know that Percy would not enjoy his biological father's sudden appearance. "Don't worry guys, i'll make sure to bribe some cash on him for crashing the party "
Mark snorted, and Jason shot him a look. Percy looked grateful at Mark for loosing the tension in the room.
Percy let out a breath and walked towards the door with Nick Fury behind him.
Nick was trying to read Poseidon. Ever the master spy. Finally, he stepped forward.
"Nick Fury, Percy's father" Poseidon raised his eyebrows as they shook hands.
"Fury, did you say? Do you perhaps have two other siblings?"
"… No, I was an only child."
"Oh, I see," Poseidon said. "Must be a coincidence. I am Poseidon."
"Poseidon? That's an interesting name." Percy looked at his dad, what was he doing? Antagonizing a god? Nick already knew everything!
"Yes, I like it. I've gone by other names, but I do prefer Poseidon."
"Like the god of the sea." Nick said face blank. What was he trying to test! Percy's panic showed on his face.
"Are you all right, my boy?" Poseidon asked Percy
"Yeah. I'm fine. I guess." Percy strained "Uh, um dad, I'll go talk with…. Uh… I'll be right back, don't worry"
Percy pushed Poseidon a further away from the door. Nick was still standing outside-it reassured Percy- Poseidon opened his mouth just as Percy was about to ask why he was here.
"I heard stories," Poseidon said. "But I wanted to hear it directly from you. Tell me everything."
Percy sighed but he did. Poseidon nodded slowly. "So, Kronos is indeed back. It will not be long before full war is upon us."
He brought out a sand dollar and pressed it into Percy's hand. "Your birthday present. Spend it wisely."
Percy looked confused. "Uh, spend a sand dollar?"
"Oh, yes. In my day, you could buy quite a lot with a sand dollar. I think you will find it still buys a lot, if used in the right situation."
Percy closed his hand around the sand dollar.
"Lord Poseidon," he said, "when I was in the maze, I met Antaeus. He said...well, he decorated his arena with skulls and—" "He dedicated them to me," Poseidon supplied. "And you are wondering
how someone could do something so horrible in my name."
Percy nodded uncomfortably. Percy was more wondering for the reaction Poseidon would give, Percy wasn't disappointed by the nonchalant answer.
Poseidon put his weathered hand on my shoulder. "Percy, lesser beings do many horrible things in the name of the gods. That does not mean we gods approve. The way our sons and daughters act in our names...well, it usually says more about them than it does about us. And you, Percy, are my favorite son."
He smiled, but Percy didn't seem fazed. He was already loved and was raised loved by his dad-Nick and his Uncle Phil. Percy did not bother seeming pleased with the confession. Percy thought of all the myths and his own experience with the Sea god and stood still. Poseidon seemed like he wanted a reaction. He seemed down at Percy's distance but talked again.
"With Kronos awakening the ancient monsters. But be aware, if Typhon stirs...it will be unlike anything you have faced before. The first time he appeared, all the forces of Olympus were barely enough to battle him. And when he stirs again, he will come here, to New York. He will make straight for Olympus."
Percy felt a sudden pang of guilt. 'That was just the kind of wonderful news I wanted to get on my birthday' he thought bitterly, but Poseidon patted him on the back like everything was fine. It was surprising just how fast a day can turn sour. "I should go. Enjoy your cake."
And just like that Poseidon turned to mist and was swept out the window on a warm ocean breeze.
Percy was surprised by the next thoughts in his head 'I wonder if I can do that,' Percy analyzing the situation like his father and uncle taught him.
It took a little work to convince his friends that Poseidon had really did wanted to just give him a present and leave, but since Nick also started to assure them, they had no choice but to believe it.
They all ate blue cake and ice cream until we couldn't eat anymore. They played a bunch of cheesy party games like charades and Monopoly. Tyson didn't get charades. He kept shouting out the answer he was trying to mime, but it turned out he was really good at Monopoly. Percy left them playing and went into the bedroom.
Percy set an uneaten slice of blue cake on his dresser. He took off his Camp Half-Blood necklace and laid it on the windowsill. There were three beads now, representing the three summers at camp—a trident, the Golden Fleece, and the latest: an intricate maze, symbolizing the Battle of the Labyrinth, as the campers had started to call it. He wondered what next year's bead would be, if he was still around to get it. If the camp survived until next summer.
A few moments later Nick knocked on the door "Come in," Percy said.
Percy was staring out the window.
Nick sat down the bed waiting patiently. Nick Fury knew the importance of separating emotions with duty. But when he became a parent, it all went out the window. Asking your child to put his emotions aside was never a good feeling. Nick looked at his son's face as he stared out the window.
"You know dad?" Percy said still staring at the window. "I was always happy whenever we did my birthday parties… Now it feels like-like a countdown... " Percy's eyes watered. "Dad… Poseidon called me his favorite son… I-I- but your my dad. Not him. His words didn't matter… but why does it hurt so much?"
Nick Fury, the director of SHEILD, let down his mask's and hugged his son with a sad expression.
"It's never your fault Percy. St. Helens, the labyrinth and even the darn fu-… freaking Prophecy. "
"But- dad all those people-"
"You were able to tell us your plans for every quest, right? You were able to contact me, and I- ever the paranoid bastard-" Percy chuckled at that "was able to alert and warn as many people as I could"
Nick Fury put his hands to Percy's cheeks and wiped his tears. Then squeezed his cheeks. "Ouch! Dad! I was crying you know!"
Nick chuckled "I know… Percy, I love you. I loved you ever since I met you. "
"Even when I put a gun to your face?"
"Especially then," Nick squeezed Percy's face again. Smooshing his cheeks. "You're my son and-"
Percy muttered through his squished face "…and that's all that matters…" Percy finished for him.
Percy pushed Nicks hands and hugged him " I love you too dad…"
The father and son hugged each other. Reassuring both each other's worries.
"… Dad, you'll still help me with all the… stuff right?"
Nick huffed "What did you think? That i'll just twiddle my thumbs and hope for the best? When have I ever done that."
"Nah, you couldn't even keep your head out when I did small quests- all the half-bloods at camp try to bribe me, to bribe you, to fund quests- I'm not the son of a super spy for nothin."
"Shush you, for once, forget about trying to plan. I'll do the worrying; you just enjoy your birthday. I know it's hard trying to separate emotions and planing, but you're not a spy so it's okay if- "
"Not yet!" Percy chirped "I'm in the junior training now ya know"
"Sigh, I know. But, you're not an agent yet, and you're my kid, Percy Fury-"
"Percy Jackson-Fury. Just Percy Fury sounds weird"
Nick laughed " I know, just wanted to test if you knew… In all seriousness, I'm glad that i'm able to help you."
"I'm glad the director of SHIELD is my dad too. " Percy chuckled "I just hope that the blessing thing- if it IS important- works by dad's too." *1
"That I hope is a plan we don't need to get through. I'd hate it if you had such a week spot. It's a shame that mortal spots don't work for organs."
Percy sighed 'I'm glad I was able to get in better terms with Nico. Glad you can track literally everyone." *2
AUTHOR NOTE
1- I'm sure Fury would research EVERYTHING. Percy and Nick talk a lot, especially since the prophecy was revealed. Percy knows a lot, and plans too. Not alike Annabeth. But in a sense that it's enough so Percy isn't blind to everything (like It seems in the books. Poor percy for being a trouble magnet) Of course Percy is still our fav Seaweed brain but it was hard to see Percy being so confused at everything trying to kill him at the beginning. Support for PERCY! (aka dad chance)
2- Nico's situation is mostly canon. I just don't like the smol boy being all sad and with that stupid ghost. Percy had Nick track him down (easy since a kid being alone didn't leave a good feeling in Nick's mouth either) in this while Nico still had his crush on Percy- well actually more so than Canon- they talked about what happened with Bianca, Phil arranged a funeral for Bianca, and now Nico is in better terms with Percy. (I'm still working out how Nico's Pluto ambassador will work out and Percy's disappearance- but it's my AU, ima trying to get less angst. The details may or may not be done in a full chappy – or just mentioned in passing). Nico got over his crush once he realized Percy~ wasn't~ his~ type~~~ lol
Hope you enjoyed this chappy. I always wanted to emphasis how Nick being Percy's father can change stuff- mainly how Percy deals with all the t~r~a~u~m~a. Welp, more like an acknowledgment of Canon Percy.
I hope you have a good day, afternoon, or night wherever you are!
:)
