First Kill Guilt

"That was rough," Leo says as he steps back into the plane, the team all slowly filling in as Coulson parks the plane up. "I'll see what we've got in the cupboard," Grant says as he heads to the kitchen. "You guys coming?" he asks more to the younger team members than to his older colleagues. "Yeah." "Absolutely, I'm starving." FitzSimmons replies in tandem and follows him towards the stairs. "Skye, you joining?" He asks and everyone turns to look at the youngest team member.

"No, I'm going to get some air, if it's alright with you guys." She says absently and steps back out of the plane. She wouldn't go far, but they were all a bit worried. She'd had a rough mission and the three field agents knew how hard taking a life is but they knew Skye had no intention of killing anyone which is why she worked so hard on the icers, but sometimes, it was the only way to stop them, but Skye, she hadn't been trained or prepared for that.

"Should I go after her?" Grant asks from where he's leaning on the top balcony. "I'll go talk to her. I have history in this area." Melinda says and she passes her gear off to Phil and slips out of the jet, hoping to catch up with the younger girl quickly.

Melinda found her about a mile away, she was sitting at the bottom of a tree throwing stones across the water. She didn't say anything as she sat down close to her. "How do you stop it?" Skye asks a couple of minutes later and Melinda is taken aback by the question. "Make what stop?" She asks eyeing the girl and Skye drops the stones out of her hands. "The sickening pain in my stomach and the gnawing at my chest." Skye replies and Melinda watches her carefully, "You don't want that pain to stop." Melinda says gently and Skye turns to look at her.

"Why not?" Skye asks and Melinda sighs and hangs her head. "Because that's guilt. That feeling means you feel bad about what you did. You feel sorry and sad and you hate yourself for what you've done." She explains and Skye watches her. "It's a good thing to hold on to. I don't get that anymore, Phil and Ward don't get that feeling anymore, we've caused too much pain to feel bad about what we do anymore. We do what we have to and don't let the feelings get involved anymore." She admits and Skye looks away to pick at the grass.

"I absolutely hated it." She admits and Melinda puts a hand on her arm and Skye turns to look at her again. "Good. It gives you a conscious, having feelings about it means you're not going to want to do it again." Melinda calmly explains trying to find the right words to comfort the young girl. "We never wanted you to end up in that sort of position. Me and Coulson, we talked about it a lot when you arrived, you and Fitzsimmons were always supposed to be kept away from anything like that." Melinda admitted and Skye dropped her eyes to the floor again.

"You'll come to terms with what happened, you just have to wait." Melinda says and Skye sits there and nods her head. "If you're ever in need of a talk, I'm there and I'm pretty sure Phil and Ward will say the same thing. We've been there, we know the feeling, even if we don't have it anymore." She explains and Skye looks up at her as Melinda stands. "Come on, I can't fly the plane if you're outside." Melinda comments and Skye smiles and takes the outstretched hand and lets the other women lift her to her feet as they start to stroll back to the plane. "Could I sit with you? In the cockpit?" Skye asks as they step up into the plane, Melinda closing the ramp behind them. "Sure you can. You go grab some food and I'll get the plane ready." Melinda says as the two of them reach the top of the stairs, Skye nods and heads towards the kitchen as Phil comes over to meet Melinda. "She's going to be alright, but I expect she'll probably be spending time camped in your office." Melinda explains and Phil nods in understanding. "I'll give Ward a warning, be careful with her." He says and Melinda nods in agreement. "Good idea." She says and Skye rounds the corner and looks at Melinda cautiously, but the older just smirks at Phil and then waves her hand at Skye. "Come on, I might even let you touch the buttons." Melinda admits and Phil chuckles. "You never teach me how to fly." He calls down the corridor and Melinda turns in the doorway. "You named your car Lola, I'm not letting you anywhere near my controls." She admits and the three of them chuckles as Melinda and Skye settle into the cockpit and Phil returns to the kitchen to buckle in with the rest of his team.

He felt better about Skye, Melinda seemed to have gotten through to her and that might be just what both of them needed. He won't have to worry about either of them for a couple of days at least.
