AU: Soulmates

at first sight

Diane has always lived life in black, white and shades of grey. It used to bother her. She used to spend late nights dreaming of meeting the man that would make her world explode into colour. But she likes to think that she's grown out of her childish fantasies. Some people, she thinks, just aren't meant to find love. She's come to accept that she's of them.

Still, there are moments when she can't help but wonder. And she's been stuck on a plane for over ten hours, so it's no surprise that her mind starts to wander. But as she watches everyone around her scrambling to try and find reception and phone their loved ones with their last bars of battery, she supposes that it's better this way.

She closes her eyes, leans back in her chair, and waits for this nightmare to end.

Another ten hours pass, and Diane is beginning to feel delirious. She accepts the tiny bottles of alcohol that the flight attendant is handing out, and her delirium soon makes way for tipsiness.

It's only when she's (finally!) off the plane, staring wide-eyed in horror at the television, that it hits her.

It's in colour. She's watching the news in colour.

Somewhere on the plane or on the bus or on this strange island, she met her soulmate. She can't remember when the switch happened—she blames the tequila for that—but it's definitely happened. She tears her eyes away from the blaring screen and takes it all in—the brown hardwood floors, the floral print on Beulah's shirt, and the redness around everyone's swollen eyes.

All the details she's always yearned to see are right in front of her. It should be the best day of her life. She turns her gaze back to the television. It's definitely not the best day of her life. In fact, it's probably the worst. Someone behind her wails.

Four hijacked planes…

Definitely the worst.

And yet there's still a part of her—she's ashamed to admit—that can't help but peak around the room, wondering who it is who's made her world explode into colour.
