Eddie's voice cracked as he called out into the chaos of the emergency room entrance, his words tinged with desperation and urgency. "We need help! My husband is in labor!"
His words echoed across the ER, cutting through the usual noise of hospital chatter and beeping machines. For a moment, time seemed to stand still. Eddie's arm tightened around Buck, who was leaning heavily against him, trembling and barely able to stand. Buck was panting, his face pale and glistening with sweat as another contraction ripped through his body. He whimpered softly, his knees buckling as the pain tore through him, threatening to overwhelm him entirely.
In an instant, the room burst into action. Nurses rushed from behind their desks, eyes wide with understanding and urgency as they registered the situation. The sight of Buck, his belly swollen and visibly contracting with each breath, had them moving swiftly. A tall nurse with short, curly brown hair led the charge, barking out instructions to the others as they rushed to Eddie and Buck's side.
"Alright, we've got him," the nurse said, her voice calm but authoritative as she reached out to support Buck on his other side. "Let's get him a wheelchair and take him straight back to Labor and Delivery."
Another nurse, younger and carrying a clipboard, sprinted to grab a wheelchair. She maneuvered it expertly through the bustling entrance and stopped just in front of Eddie and Buck. "Here, sir," she said breathlessly, offering it to them as she quickly adjusted the footrests.
Buck was moaning softly, his hands gripping Eddie's shirt tightly as he swayed on his feet. His body tensed with the intensity of another contraction, and Eddie felt Buck shudder against him. Buck's breath came in short, gasping bursts, the sound of each exhale filled with barely-contained pain. Eddie's heart twisted at the sound, feeling completely helpless.
"It's okay, Buck," Eddie whispered, trying to keep his voice steady despite the sheer panic rising in his chest. "They're going to take care of you now."
With great effort, Eddie and the nurses managed to lower Buck into the wheelchair. As soon as Buck sat down, another contraction hit, and he cried out, his hands flying to grip the arms of the chair. His entire body arched forward, his breathing coming out in rapid pants as he tried to manage the pain. The contraction was so intense that tears welled up in his eyes, spilling over and streaking down his flushed cheeks.
Eddie knelt beside Buck, his hand never leaving Buck's, offering what little comfort he could. "You're doing amazing, Buck. We're almost there."
Buck's lip trembled, and he let out a shaky breath, nodding even though it was clear he was struggling to hold on. His grip on Eddie's hand tightened, knuckles white from the strain, but Eddie welcomed the pain. It was nothing compared to what Buck was going through right now, and Eddie would gladly take it all if he could.
"Let's move, people!" the lead nurse called out as she signaled for the rest of the team to follow her. "We need to get him to a room right away."
The nurses moved quickly, wheeling Buck through the bustling emergency room. Eddie stayed right beside him, his hand still gripping Buck's tightly as they navigated through the corridors. The bright fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting a stark glow on everything, and the smell of antiseptic filled the air. It was all a blur to Eddie, though, his entire focus on Buck and the intensity of the moment.
Every few feet, Buck would let out another moan, his head falling back against the chair as a fresh wave of pain surged through him. His contractions were coming closer and closer together now, giving him barely any time to recover between them. Eddie could see the fear creeping into Buck's eyes, and it tore him apart.
"We're almost there, okay?" Eddie said softly, brushing his fingers through Buck's damp hair. "You're so strong, Buck. Just a little longer."
Buck nodded weakly, his breath hitching as he fought to stay calm, but Eddie could see how exhausted he was. His body was trembling, and he was sweating profusely, each contraction draining what little energy he had left.
Finally, they reached the Labor and Delivery ward, the nurses moving with purpose as they wheeled Buck into one of the private birthing rooms. The room was bright and sterile, the bed in the center already prepared for him. One of the nurses grabbed a hospital gown from a nearby shelf while another set up the monitors, their hands moving swiftly and efficiently as they worked around Buck and Eddie.
"Okay, we need to get you into bed now," the lead nurse said as she moved to help Buck out of the wheelchair. "Let's take it slow, but we need to get you checked and hooked up to the monitors as soon as possible."
Buck groaned in response, his entire body sagging with fatigue as Eddie and the nurses helped him stand. He leaned heavily on Eddie, his legs trembling beneath him as he shuffled toward the bed. Each step was agonizing for Buck, his breath hitching with every contraction, and Eddie could feel how much effort it took for him to keep moving.
Once they got Buck to the bed, the nurses helped him lie back against the pillows, adjusting the blankets around him to make him more comfortable. Eddie stayed by his side the entire time, his hand still gripping Buck's tightly, his heart aching as he watched Buck struggle to catch his breath.
"You're doing so good," Eddie whispered, leaning in close to press a kiss to Buck's forehead. "We're in the home stretch now, Buck. You're almost there."
Buck let out a shaky breath, his eyes fluttering open to meet Eddie's gaze. Despite the pain, despite the exhaustion, there was love in Buck's eyes, a deep connection that made Eddie's heart swell. Even now, in the middle of the most difficult moment of his life, Buck was still holding on—for Eddie, for their family, for the life they had built together.
"I… I love you," Buck whispered, his voice weak but full of emotion.
"I love you too, Buck," Eddie replied, his voice thick with emotion as he squeezed Buck's hand. "So much."
Before either of them could say more, Buck tensed again, his breath catching as another powerful contraction hit. His body arched off the bed, and he let out a low, guttural moan that echoed through the room.
The nurses moved quickly, adjusting the monitors and preparing for the next phase of labor. The tension in the room was rising, the realization that the baby was coming fast settling over them all. Eddie stayed by Buck's side, his heart pounding in his chest as he watched the love of his life face the most intense challenge yet.
But through it all, Eddie knew one thing for certain: Buck was strong. He could do this. And Eddie would be there every step of the way.
