Her eyes blinked as Prisma made her way through the streets, coming back after her therapy session. It had been three days since the chromatic dragon fiasco and Iris was heading for the little cafe to grab herself and her brothers their usual drinks. Her side was still heavily bandaged and stitched up, she was taking it easy as per her doctor's orders. She wasn't fond of it, but she didn't want to be scolded again and her brothers were keeping a close eye on her till she needed to go for her session today.
Artha had warned her not to be too long and to take it slow. She had promised she would be okay as Beau asked Prisma to keep a close eye on his human sister. Prisma had given him her word that she would watch over her sister and now they were on their way to grab a drink from their little cafe. Maybe they'll see Astra again, as Iris had promised her new friend that she would get to know her more and have little coffee chats at the cafe now and then.
Reaching the cafe, Iris was magged out of her saddle and placed firmly on the ground, she patted her dragon's nose in thanks and headed inside, removing her helmet as Layla greeted her with a smile. "The usual?" Iris nodded and Layla wrote down the three drinks, giving the teen the total amount, which was $18.00. She paid for the drinks and turned around, spotting Astra at the table, the other teen saw her and waved, beckoning her over.
With a smile, Iris made her way over, setting her helmet down beside her as she slid into the seat. "Hi, Iris. How are you?" Astra asked her new friend as she sipped on the iced coffee she had ordered five minutes ago. She'd been in the cafe for ten minutes and was surprised to see Iris walk in, but happy nonetheless to see her friend again after two weeks.
"I've been pretty good, Astra. Been busy, but that's the normal with me." Iris said with a shrug. She then remembered she had brought Astra a little gift and retrieved it from her jacket pocket. "Here, Astra, I got you this so you can communicate with me, as I noticed you didn't have one." she held out a wrist-comm to her friend, who took it in her hands. She smiled, feeling grateful for the gift. "Thank you, Iris. I will keep this with me at all times." she fastened it to her wrist.
"I never got around to getting one of these since I didn't have any friends till now," Astra revealed as Iris showed her the buttons and explained everything. Astra smiled again as Layla walked over with the drinks. "Here you go, Iris."
"Thank you, Layla." Iris thanked the barista who smiled and went back to the counter. Putting her helmet back on, Iris picked up the drinks in the cup tray. "I have to get back to my brothers, as they are waiting for me."
Astra perked up. "Can I come with you? I would like to meet your brothers and they can meet me."
Iris thought it over in her head, deciding it would be all alright to bring her friend to meet her brothers. "Sure, come on." the two girls left the cafe, Astra finishing her iced coffee and putting the empty cup in the bin as she followed Iris outside and Prisma lowered her head.
"Hello, Astra. It is wonderful to see you again." the hybrid greeted her sister's friend, purring as the teen stroked her snout. "Hello again, Prisma. I hope you don't mind me coming with you. I would like to meet Iris' brothers."
"I think that is a wonderful idea! You're more than welcome to come with us to Penn Stables." The hybrid purred as she magged a spare helmet from the storage compartment and Astra took it in her hands, putting it on before the dragoness magged her rider to the saddle, then Astra behind her.
"Astra, before you hold onto my waist, I need to tell you something. I was injured the other day by blue dragon star gear slicing my right side, just below my ribs." Iris explained, very lightly patting her bandaged waist. Astra's eyes widened in shock. "Magma draconis, Iris! How did you get hurt like that?"
"I was trying to help protect Brutaris from the Army of the Dragon and as I and Prisma were leaving after they found us, Wulph, the leader, sent some blue star gear and one sliced me in my side."
Astra cringed for her friend. "Are you okay now?"
"I'm doing better, I got scolded heavily by the doctor for tearing my stitches after I convinced Prisma to bring me to where Lance, Kitt and Parm were located, as they were looking for the missing dragons that had been stolen by the Army of the Dragon crew."
"Yeah, I heard about that on the news, Brutaris was kidnapped and turned into a mutated dragon." Astra slid her arms around Iris' waist, albeit a little loose so she wasn't putting any pressure on the wound, but still tight enough so she didn't fall out of the saddle.
Prisma set off for Penn Stables at a slow pace, as Iris held the cup holder in both hands and Astra held her waist. They arrived back at the stables roughly half an hour later. Prisma magged both girls down to the ground as Artha and Lance came out of the house, eager to see their sister.
"Iris, welcome home!" Artha greeted his sister, who smiled and handed him his drink. He smiled at her in thanks, noting for the first time the other teen that stood beside her. "Who's this?" he asked as Lance was given his drink, the ten-year-old eagerly sipping the frothy drink and thanking Iris with a grin.
"Artha, Lance, this is my new friend, Astra, I met her when I went to the cafe. Astra, these are my brothers, Artha and Lance." Iris introduced them to each other.
"Nice to meet you, Astra, welcome to Penn Stables." Artha welcomed the teen with a smile and a gesture to the stables. Astra looked around the stables, noticing part of the stables was burned. "What happened here?"
The three siblings looked at each other, wondering if it was a good idea to tell Astra about the fire and Beau's attempted kidnapping. "Part of the stables was on fire due to the Dragon Eyes trying to steal a dragon from the stables," Artha answered, deciding to keep Beau's kidnapping to himself for now till they could fully trust Astra.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Was the dragon rescued?"
"Yeah, the dragon got away. It's safe now." Artha said as Beau poked his head out of his stall and grinned when he saw Iris and Prisma. "Iris, Prisma, welcome home!" the red and blue dragon greeted with a huff.
Prisma grinned as she saw her friend. "Hello, Beau. How are you?"
Artha looked over as he saw Beau nuzzle Prisma in greeting. "Oh, this is Beau, he's my dragon." he introduced Astra to his dragon, who sniffed her offered hand.
"Hello, I'm Astra, a friend of Iris. It's nice to meet you, Beau." Astra smiled as the dragon allowed her to stroke his nose while Iris got Prisma settled in her stall, removed her saddle and set it down in the corner before getting a brush and cleaning her dragon. The hybrid purred as she was being brushed by her sister.
"It's nice to meet you, Astra. Any friend of Iris is a friend of ours." Beau greeted with a grin. Astra chuckled at him.
"And Lance has Fracshun. He's an energy-class dragon, but he's in his stall right now." Artha added, sipping his drink. Iris soon walked back over and Artha handed over her drink. She sipped it as Prisma munched on her food.
"Would you like to come in?" Iris invited her friend to come inside the house and the siblings all entered the house with Astra behind them, she looked around. It was a standard home with a good-sized kitchen, the dining room stood off to the living and stairs leading up to the second floor, likely where the bedrooms were. Most of the lounge had been burned due to the fire.
"Can we get you some food, Astra?" Iris offered, heading into the kitchen and grabbing some bread out of the pantry. 'Thanks, Iris, a sandwich will do fine." Astra thanked her as she took a seat at the bench with Lance, Artha too entered the kitchen and helped his sister make a few sandwiches for lunch.
Humming to herself, Iris spread the butter evenly over the bread, grabbing the mustard and ham, putting a bit of both on the sandwich, then putting the top on, she grabbed a plate and set it down, sliding it in front of Astra.
"Thank you, Iris." the teen smiled as she picked up the sandwich and took a bite, humming in delight as Lance was handed his sandwich by Artha. The ten-year-old thanked his brother as the two teens made their own and all of them sat down to eat.
Once they'd eaten, Iris filled a glass with water and handed it to her friend, who again thanked her, sipping on the cool liquid as the siblings finished off their drinks, tossing the cups into the bin before Lance went to grab his vid-game, asking if Artha or Iris wanted to join him for a game. Iris declined politely and Astra expressed an interest, prompting Lance to eagerly explain the game to her before handing her the game, he coached her on how to play Battle Ground Dragon, cheering as she won her first battle.
Iris and Artha watched as the pair bonded over the vid-game. "Sorry for bringing her here unannounced, she wanted to meet you and Lance," Iris explained. Artha, instead of being upset by the unexpected guest, smiled. "You should have bought her over sooner, sis. She's a nice person and seems like she gets on well with Lance. Does she have a family?"
Iris shook her head. "From what I know, she only has, or had a father, she doesn't know where he is now, though. The only thing she has of him is her necklace."
Artha gazed at the brown-haired teen with sorrow in his eyes. "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that."
Iris nodded in agreement, it was sad to see her friend without any parental figure in her life, but she was doing well for herself on her own. Astra laughed as she battled another player and won, throwing her hands up in the air in victory!
Astra spent the rest of the day with the Penn siblings, as Artha had the day off from racing, and Iris had her session with Sara that morning. "So, how was being around my brothers?" Iris asked as she saddled up Prisma to take Astra back to her apartment.
"Your brothers were awesome, Lance is a good kid, Iris."
Magged into the saddle, Iris gripped the handles as Astra was lifted behind her and the dragoness headed out of the stable at a steady pace to bring Astra home for the night. The brown-haired teen held on securely to her friend as they walked towards her apartment, she'd had a great day with Lance and Artha, they were nice and she wished she'd had a sibling to bond with, but from what she recalled about her earliest memories as a baby, she was an only child and never had any siblings.
"Can I ask⦠where's your parents?" Astra asked after a little hesitation, not sure if she was crossing a line by asking that kind of question.
Iris looked down sadly. "Our dad is missing, our mom died when she was giving birth to Lance."
Astra nearly choked on her breath. "Oh, I'm so sorry, Iris. I shouldn't have asked." now she was feeling guilty for opening her mouth.
"Don't be sorry, Astra, you didn't know and since we're friends, Indeed to learn to trust you, that includes telling you about our dad. I'm adopted, you see, I was badly abused by my biological mother when I was a child, it caused me severe anxiety and panic attacks, I was taken into Child Services when I was seven years old and my dad fostered me a year later, eventually adopting me into the family a few months later, I became Iris Heartwing-Penn, but prefer Penn over my other surname." Iris explained her childhood to her friend.
Astra was horrified her friend had endured so much pain as a child and from her own mother! "My bio mother was sent to prison for her crimes, but her abuse left me deeply scarred, both physically and mentally, so that's why I go to therapy, and I recently started going again due to suffering from nightmares. I'm doing okay, but I fear with Dad missing, Lance will be taken by Child Services since Artha and I are only teens ourselves. We have no other family to take over guardianship till Dad is found." Iris finished her story as Prisma came to a stop in front of the apartment building Astra lived in.
The teen hugged her friend tightly but kept it gentle so as to not aggravate her injury. "Iris, no words can describe how sorry I am for the pain you've suffered." Iris watched as the girl dismounted the saddle and reached up to grip her hand. "But know that if you need anything at all, please call me and I will get there as soon as I can, alright?"
Iris was a bit dumbfounded by the promise but smiled happily. "Thank you, Astra. You're a wonderful person."
The other teen chuckled softly. "I aim to please." both girls laughed before Astra bid her friend goodbye and Iris waved as she and Prisma left the building and headed for home.
Three days later, Iris was woken from her sleep by a loud insistent knocking at the door one early morning. Blinking blearily, she lifted her head from the pillow as the knocking sounded again. She yawned and heard muffled footsteps from outside her bedroom door, no doubt Artha dragging himself down the stairs to investigate who the magma draconis was knocking on the front door at this early hour in the morning!?
She pushed herself up into a seated position, her hair all over the place and slipped out of her warm bed, trudging to the door and pulling it open, she saw Lance poke his head out of his bedroom, blinking the sleep from his eyes. "What's going on?" the boy asked through a yawn as Iris stepped out of her room. "I don't know," she answered, covering a yawn as she made her way downstairs and saw Artha standing at the front door, rubbing his tired eyes. Iris came to stand beside her brother, she saw who was at the door.
A woman stood before them wearing a suit and hair done up in a bun. She narrowed her blue eyes at seeing the violet teen. "Iris Penn?" at her nod, the woman continued. "I'm Lilly Simmons, I'm with Child Services, we were made aware that your father, Connor Penn has been missing for some time now. Is this correct?"
Her eyes widened in shock and her face went pale once she heard that, her worst nightmare had come true, Lance would be taken away from them and placed into foster care! Artha could only nod his head, unable to form words as he was in utter shock at the thought of losing his little brother.
Lance came down at the moment and saw a woman at the door. Lilly caught sight of the young boy standing behind the older teens. "Lance Penn, you'll have to come with me, young man."
"Why?" he asked and Iris knelt in front of him, struggling to keep from breaking down in tears. "Lance, uh..." she swallowed thickly. "I'm so sorry, but you have to go with Lilly for a bit."
"What? No, I'm staying here with you and Artha!" Lance refused to go, he didn't want to, and he was hungry!
His stomach grumbled loudly in protest and Artha asked; "Can we at least give him some breakfast before he has to go?"
Lilly nodded. "Of course, I will be back in about an hour," she informed before leaving and mounting her magma-class dragon, who sped off out of the stable, leaving the siblings be for the moment.
Breakfast was a quiet event, no words were spoken as Artha and Iris cooked up some pancakes and plated them out with syrup on top. None of them said anything as they ate their food.
"Iris, I can feel your sorrow and pain, what is wrong my sister?" Prisma's soothing voice entered her mind and Iris blinked as she shoved another mouthful of pancake into her mouth, though it tasted like ash on her tongue.
"A woman from Child Services knows that dad is missing, Lance has to go with her into foster care," she explained to her sister, who she felt the shock vibrate through her body like it was her own.
"Oh, Iris, I'm so sorry to hear that. Is there anything I can do?" Prisma offered, pushing happy feelings to her sister in hopes it would help.
Iris just looked down at her food, unable to eat, having lost her appetite. She noticed Artha was the same as Lance finished his food. "Come on, Lance, let's go pack your bag." Iris led the way up to her little brother's bedroom, trying to ignore his protests about not wanting to leave and keep from breaking down in tears.
It was silent as she packed his bag for him, he watched with sad and confused eyes as she finished zipping up his bag and they descended the stairs, coming outside and putting the bag down as they went to feed the dragons while they waited. True to her word, Lilly returned after an hour and waited as Iris and Artha helped Lance saddle Fracshun up after his breakfast and he'd had a bath.
With tears in his eyes, Lance threw himself into his brother and sister's arms, they hugged him close, struggling to keep it together. "I don't want to go!" the boy sobbed as he held his brother and sister, he didn't want to leave them. Iris swallowed and just kept him close, promising him that she would call him later on and see how he was settling in.
Lilly waited until she announced it was time to leave. Lance was magged to his saddle as Iris patted the little energy-class. "Take care of him for us, Fracshun."
The young dragon growled softly. "I will, Iris, I promise."
Artha stood beside Iris as they watched Lance follow Lilly out of the stable, once they were out of sight, Iris could no longer contain her emotions and she collapsed to the floor, sobs wracking her body as she cried and screamed her sorrow at losing her little brother to Child Services. Artha fell beside her and wrapped his arms around her tightly, his shoulders shaking as he unleashed his sorrow and pain!
Lance could faintly hear his brother and sister screaming in sorrow and more tears rolled down his cheeks. Lilly gazed at the boy with pain in her eyes, she hated to take him away from his siblings who loved him deeply, but without a parent around, he needed stability in his life so she had to bring him with her to foster care where he would be cared for until someone came to either adopt him or a new guardian showed up.
So with his head down, Lance and Fracshun followed Lilly and her dragon to the local orphanage where he was shown to his room, which thankfully, he didn't need to share with anyone and the other kids left him alone after he put Fracshun in a stable beside Lilly's dragon, whose name was Heatblast.
The older dragon could see that Fracshun was sad about leaving his home and friends. "I am sorry, little one. But there was no other choice." he expressed his condolences about the situation, but Fracshun just curled up, his back to the red dragon. Heatblast huffed in sadness and laid down as well.
Iris blinked her tired, red, puffy eyes as Artha poured her some chamomile tea to help her calm down and relax. It had been 24 hours since Lance departed the stables with Lilly and she was not doing well at all! Artha sat down beside her, wrapping his arm lightly around her shoulders, offering her his comfort. He was upset too, but he was trying to keep it together for his sister's sake.
His wrist-comm beeped, alerting him to an incoming call and his screen popped up, showing Gwen, who smiled, but it faded as she saw how tired and red-eyed he looked. "Artha, are you alright? What happened?" Gwen asked in concern.
"Lance was taken by Child Services, they found out dad is missing so they took him into foster care." Artha solemnly explained to the dragon vet, who was scheduled to come over and check up on Prisma. Gwen looked at him with pity in her eyes. "Oh Artha, I'm so sorry to hear, How is Iris doing?"
Artha just adjusted his wrist, showing Iris, red-eyed and sipping her tea in a zombie-like state, her hair disheveled, her skin pale and dark circles under her eyes. It was very clear she hadn't slept at all last night. "Oh Iris, sweetie..." Gwen gasped, having never seen Iris this bad before.
Gwen was worried about Iris' mental state, she valued her brothers very much and seeing her in this state had her very concerned. "Alright, Artha, listen to me." Artha focused back on him. "You need to keep her grounded and get her mind off Lance. Stay with her and keep her company. I'm going to come over and check on Prisma, then I will look her over, make sure she isn't making herself sick."
Artha nodded, that sounded good to him. Though he knew his racing was going to be pushed back due to this, he just hoped he wasn't too far behind with racing and would catch up easily. "Okay, thanks, Gwen, that sounds great."
"I'll be there soon," Gwen announced, cutting the call and Artha sighed, looking over at Iris, who just kept sipping her tea, not saying a single word.
Gwen ended the call with Artha and began to gather her medical bags to go over to the Penn's and check on Prisma, then Iris, by the looks of things, Iris was suffering from depression, rather badly too. The dragon vet was not just a close friend of Connor's, she had been Fira's best friend during school. They'd met when they both were in year 3, promising to stay friends no matter what happened, and they did, all through high school, they remained close friends, even when Gwen chose to be a vet and Fira a street racer, she became a member of the Dragon Flares crew in her teen years, but still kept in contact with Gwen. She'd even been invited to Connor and Fira's wedding, serving as Fira's Maid of Honor, a role she was happy to fill. Fira passed two years after her youngest son, Lance was born from cancer.
Wiping her teary eyes, Gwen steeled herself and left her office, heading down the stairs to where Soundwyve waited for her, already saddled up and ready to go. She mounted her dragon and he took off towards Penn Stables. They arrived in half an hour and Gwen dismounted the saddle, grabbed her bag and headed inside the house where she found Artha sitting at the dining table, Iris was beside him.
She put her bag down and knelt in front of the distraught teenager. "Iris, sweetie, can you hear me?" she asked, gently laying a hand on the girl's knee. She said nothing and Gwen shared a look with Artha, who looked very worried. "Okay, Iris, I know you're upset about Lance being taken, but you need to take care of yourself. He wouldn't want you making yourself sick."
Iris looked into Gwen's worried eyes and burst into more tears, the mention of Lance had sent her over the edge and the older woman wrapped her arms around the teen tightly. "Oh sweetie, I know it hurts, but you need to be strong, okay? For Lance. He's counting on you and Artha to be strong while he's away."
Iris just continued to sob into her shoulder as Gwen held the teen close, she was going to help them, no matter how hard it was! She would not let them stay like this!
After consoling Iris, Gwen went to check on Prisma, whose wounds were now fully healed and she was looking great! Gwen told Artha to call her if Iris got any worse before she mounted Soundwyve and left the stables.
That night, Iris sat in Lance's room, gazing out the window at the stars, lost in thought. After Gwen left, Artha managed to get her to eat a sandwich and kept an eye on her all day. She wondered how Lance was doing, how he was settling in at the orphanage, she hoped he was okay and that he was being treated fairly.
Artha sat in his room, but he couldn't relax and went to check on Iris, finding her clutching a stuffed teddy Lance had forgotten to take with him. The teen looked over at her brother as he walked in and took a seat beside her, wrapping his arms around her tightly. "I can't sleep without him here, Artha, I miss him," Iris whispered, voice heavy with sorrow. Artha just hugged her tighter, trying to give her as much comfort as he possibly could in her time of need.
"Iris, look at me?" he gently pulled back from the hug, gazing at her. "Lance needs you to be strong for him, as do I. I race tomorrow and I need you there, please?"
Her eyes welled up with more tears, but she wiped them away, blowing her nose with the tissue Artha gave her. "Okay, I'll try." she could make no promises, but for him, she would try her best. Artha smiled warmly at her. "That's all I ask, sis." he hugged her one more time before wishing her a good night and departing to his bedroom, leaving her in the bedroom, she looked around, placing the stuffed teddy on the bed and leaving the room herself. She went to her bedroom and grabbed her pillow, and blankets and changed into her pj's, leaving the room to go and sleep with Prisma in her stall.
She entered the stall and her dragon lifted her head from where it rested on the ground. "Iris, come sit, my sister. You look awful." Prisma invited her sister to lie beside her, which the teen did. She was incredibly worried about her since Lance had been escorted away. She couldn't do much but offer her support when it was needed. Iris laid out the sleeping mat she had grabbed where it had been lying on the ground in the corner of the stable and put the blankets on top, then the pillows, laying down as Prisma curled around her tightly, her tail draped across Iris' legs.
Iris just let the gentle beating of her dragon's heart lull her into a deep, restful sleep her body so desperately needed. Prisma crooned softly as she listened to Iris' breathing slow down and her body finally relax. "Oh Iris, I'm so sorry about Lance, but you will see him again soon." the hybrid closed her orange eyes and let herself fall asleep with her sister safely beside her.
A week had passed since Lance was taken by Child Services and Gwen was drumming her fingers on her desk nervously, she was waiting for her mail to be delivered, as she was waiting for a very important letter that would help the Penn siblings greatly. Finally, after what seemed like hours, she was handed a single letter by her assistant and thanked the girl before she tore the letter open, reading through it as her eyes widened and a massive smile appeared on her face. She needed to go see Artha and Iris, now!
Quickly saddling up Soundwyve, she headed straight over, getting there in record time and dismounting, she knocked on the door and Kitt Wonn, leading street-racer, answered the door. "Can I help you?" the girl asked, looking Gwen up and down and wondering why she was there. "Is Artha and Iris here?"
Artha then appeared beside Kitt, having heard her voice. "Gwen, how can we help you?" the teen asked. Gwen just smiled. "Where's Iris? I need to speak to you both, it's important."
Artha looked at Kitt. "Can you go get Iris?" Kitt nodded, leaving the two to get her friend, who was in Lance's room, hugging his stuffed teddy. After the night spent with Prisma in her stall, Iris had spent the next few nights sleeping beside her dragon sister, taking comfort in her presence and loving heart. She had been able to get some proper sleep and was able to cheer Artha on at the race the next day with Kitt and Parm, both of whom had questioned where Lance was. Artha had been the one to explain the situation after the race and both Parm and Kitt had said that they would stay with them for the next few days. So that is what they did, Artha set up the spare room in the house for Kitt while Parm slept on his mat on the floor. They had been a big help with keeping Iris grounded and her mind off Lance.
Kitt reappeared with Iris trailing behind her, Artha stepped outside and Iris trailed him, both teens wondering why she looked so happy. Gwen just handed the letter over to them and they both read through it, their eyes going wide the more they read. Finally, they looked over to Gwen. "You applied to be our guardian?" Iris asked, shock written on her face. Gwen nodded. "I hope you are okay with it. It's just till your dad is found, then he gets full custody back. If you don't want me to take over for now, I understand-" Gwen was cut off by Iris launching herself at her in a tight hug, burying her face in the older woman's shoulder. "Thank you," she whispered, voice thick with emotion. Artha had a look of gratitude as he joined the hug, he would be happy to have Gwen as their guardian.
"All you need to do is sign here and it's official."
Iris pulled back from the hug as Gwen handed her one of her pens, using the side of the house to write her signature, Artha sighed next and handed the paper back to Gwen, who smiled. "Now that you are my wards, it's time to get Lance back." Iris's eyes widened in joy at that and Gwen promised that she would go and pick him up, telling them to remain behind for now. The two teens waited anxiously inside the house for the next hour and a half, surrounded by their friends as they waited for Gwen to get back with Lance.
After what felt like days, there was the sound of running footsteps heading their way and the two siblings exited the house to see Gwen ride up with Lance and Fracshun following her. The two dragons skidded to a stop and Lance jumped down from the saddle, tossing his helmet to the side and racing for Iris and Artha, who both knelt and opened their arms as their little brother crashed into them, knocking all three siblings over, but they held each other tightly, grateful to be together again as Gwen, Parm and Lance all watched with smiles on their faces.
Sorry, it's a bit late, was busy over the weekend and wasn't able to do much till now. But what do you all think about Gwen becoming the Penn sibling's guardian for the time being? Reviews are greatly appreciated and if you have any questions, let me know in the reviews. Bye for now!
