"I can't comprehend how Caesar[1] could so extensively scramble your sense of morality to make you think the Legion is a better alternative to anything."
"You weren't there with me and Raul[2] when we saw what happened at Gommorrah[3]. Nero[4] took that NCR senator's money and let him do whatever he wanted to her. The fact that someone like that is in power and Mr. House[5] knew nothing about it proves both factions incompetence."
"I know how you feel about those situations. What he did cannot be forgiven. However, that doesn't change what the Legion will do after they take the dam."
"The Legion is changing Arcade[6]. In small ways but changing. Don't you find it odd that I, of all people, are in their service yet so highly respected?"
"Those small changes don't excuse what they do and I doubt something so core to their identity will ever change. I'm leaving. Goodbye."
Six was awoken from their nap on the couch to the sound of the Auto-Doc calling up the machine and opening its door revealed an unconscious Raynare.
Six picked her up and carried her down the elevator to begin another interrogation. After a while of waiting, she finally woke up.
"Oh it's you. Wha- I feel strange. I should be feeling angry yet…"
"You won't be able to attack anyone here. Not even so much as get angry to want to."
Doubtful of the statement, she tried mustering up a light spear.
Yet nothing occurred. "I can't. I-I-uh why can-"
"My name is Robert House. You're not going to be tortured, arrested, or anything like that. I just want to talk."
"Which is the last thing I'm going to do. You're getting nothing out of me." Raynare declared.
"I'm not asking for your deepest darkest secrets. But if you don't want to talk I understand. I brought you some water, if you need any more just ask. We're goin' to be here a while so I'm just gonna do some readin'."
Six then pulled out a Japanese for English speakers book to pass the time. Raynare drank her water and assessed her situation. She had no clue where she was, she couldn't defend herself, and could be attacked at any moment.
I'm not telling this pathetic human anything. Eventually, my disappearance will be discovered and I'll be rescued. It's only a matter of time.
Roughly an hour later Six decided to walk out. Locking the door behind them, Six considered what to do next.
I'll keep her isolated there for a few hours. I'll keep studying Japanese to kill some time then check up on her.
Time flew as Six studied Katakana and Hiragana in the next room. It wasn't until they glanced at their pip-boy did Six realize three and a half hours had passed. When Six unlocked the door he noticed Raynare was midst pacing back and forth in the room.
Six sat down and motioned to the bed. "Please sit down Raynare."
Raynare compiled without uttering a sound. "Now, I'm sure you're getting a bit bored so I've got an offer. You ask me a question and I ask you one. Then I'll bring you some food. How does that sound?"
She nodded silently.
"Thank you. Now go ahead and ask."
"What did you do to me? I feel so calm and can't use any magic."
Interesting. I would've thought she'd try to teleport out of here so I stayed next door. It seems that at least in her case she associates even non-combat magic with aggressive thoughts and because the Pacification field prevents any aggressive thoughts or actions she can't do anything
"A special medical operation has been done on you. I don't know the details but all I know is that the operation took a couple hours."
"Why did you kill Issei Hyoudou?" "I was told he was dangerous for the sacred gear he possessed but in reality, it was nothing more than a Twice Critical. A basic, common sacred gear.
"Where are we? How did I get here?" "That's two questions. I don't mind answering both but then you'll do the same." "Not like I have anywhere else to be. Sure."
"You're in the hospital's intensive care unit. Freed told me to bring you here. He has some connections here. Freed used some sort of flashbang to blind the enemy then we got here on foot."
"Why did you kill Asia and is it true Kokabiel intends to restart the great war?"
"I killed her because I wanted her Sacred Gear for myself. It would make higher ranked fallen angels value me much more."
"And Kokabiel?"
Raynare glared at Six. "Did Dohnaseek tell you this?" "I'll answer that right after you answer me." Six said while leaning back into the chair.
"Then forget it. I'm not telling you anything else."
Six sighed. "I understand. I'll be right back." They returned a few minutes later with a syringe, mug, clipboard and pencil. "The doctors also want to make sure you don't have any internal injuries so you'll need to be injected with this."
"Why?"
"It's just a precaution. The machinery causes discomfort or pain and this will numb you so you don't feel it. Don't worry, you'll be awake just a little relaxed." Six gently grabbed her arm and injected the syringe into the vein. "Hold still please."
Six then questioned Raynare as she was the influence of midazolam. After about an hour of questioning Six decided to wrap it up worrying the effects may wear off soon.
"So you were envious, felt pity for her, yet still decided to kill her for her Sacred gear?"
"Yeah. I guess I thought something like: 'I've done a lot of things I thought I'd never do. One more won't hurt.' "
"I'm not trying to create excuses just-I just…wanted to say my thought process." Her shoulders slumped as she stared at the ground.
Six stayed silent at her confession. She confirmed everything Dohnaseek said and answered any new questions.
"Would you mind telling me why you fell?"
She shrugged uncaringly. "Sure. Why not? It was before the great war. I was dissatisfied with what was going on in both Heaven and Earth. I felt…I guess, undervalued."
She played with her hair then took a deep breath before continuing. "There were so many of us, we could do so much with our power, yet we rarely influenced or interfered in events. I hated watching humans kill, steal, and lie to one another and be expected to do nothing."
Raynare began tightening her fists. "Over time I started to hate them. They made so many stupid decisions without the slightest thought for future generations or learning from past mistakes. But I told myself, God has some plan I am unaware of or could not understand. When Kokabiel spoke to me, he shared the same frustrations and said he had an alternative."
Raynare then let out a sigh of relief. "Or at least that's what he told me. Knowing him he probably fell because his pride grew too great just like the last one to rebel against god."
"Well, thank you for sharing all that." Six said as they finished writing down her words.
"Just put on this mask and we're done."
Raynare strapped on the breathing mask and her consciousness faded away. Six stared at her deciding on what to do with her.
I'll keep it alive. Never know when it'll be useful again. Just gotta remember to unlock the door every once in a while to feed it. That aside, I should head for Kuoh. I need to know everything there is about what they call 'Magic'.
Six went upstairs, grabbed all the grown food from the indoor garden, a bucket, then threw it on the desk with a note that read: "Ration it and use this to empty yourself." Then restocked all ammo, changed into their imitation of Kuoh's uniform, and pulled out the Transportalponder.
Upon arriving, Six headed straight for the school. Six saw one of someone dressed in a white t-shirt and shorts heading for the only light building. Walking to the door, Six saw two groups of people. Rias Gremory and her team, the other team must be led by the girl with short black hair and glasses. Both were divided by a line in the center of the room, throwing a red rubber ball at one another.
Six leaned against the wall waiting for whatever game they were playing to be done with in order to speak with her. As Six pulled out a book to read he heard the sound of a loud spark. Then another, after another, and another. The devils were beginning to add magic to their game and the ball was moving at incredible speeds. On top of that, the ball seemed to be chasing after some of its targets. Eventually, the game concluded and Six approached them.
"So who is this Rias? If I had to guess, it's Robert House?"
"You're right on the money Miss Sitri[7]. I informed Miss Gremory of the operations the fallen were doin' in both of your territories and helped in their removal."
"How kind of you. But I doubt you came here just to introduce yourself. What are you doing here?"
"I came to report on the interrogation I did on both fallen. They were not in your territory by chance. They were ordered here to kill Issei Hyoudou and take Asia Argento's sacred gear."
"By who?" asked Sona as she pushed up her glasses.
"That is where I hit a snag. I went to get them food and water but they killed themselves. It was a mistake on my part. I assumed that they were too prideful to do anything like that so I took them into a room with a wooden desk. They broke a table leg and stabbed themselves with it." Off to the side Six noticed Issei's tension drop immensely upon hearing of Raynare's death. Six then saw Asia Argento. She was alive and well.
"Ms. Argento. I'm sorry for earlier. I didn't think they would do that to you. This isn't much but I hope it helps in the future." Six then handed her 3 stimpacks.
"And that is?" Asked Rias, doubtful of Roberts intentions.
"A stimpack. It speeds up the healing process immensely. Although anywhere will work, for the best results, inject it in the wounded area. I'll prove it." Robert then took out A Light Shining in the Darkness.
"This gun shoots .45 caliber bullets." Aiming the barrel at the edge of the forearm Six fired.
"Wha-why did you do that?! Asia quick hea-"Yelled Issei in shock. "No, it's ok. Watch." Six then injected two syringes into the forearm and the wound began to heal at a rapid rate resulting in a scarless, fully healed, wound.
Rias watched in fascination. "Amazing. Just like phoenix tears. Was this what you used to heal Issei?"
Six nodded in response. "Yeah. I don't have an infinite supply of 'em and it takes time to get more but hopefully they'll help." Akeno chuckled. "They're perfect for you Asia. You're already our healer."
"I must admit Rias you've made one good ally. Robert, would you be willing to sell me these?" Then Rias chuckled at Sona's question. "You don't waste any time do you Sona? Robert, if me and Sona gave you whatever you wanted, how many would you be willing to sell us?"
"I need a supply for myself but I could part with thirty for each of you." Rias's and Sona's eyes widened at the response. "So what would you want for that many?" "I want a copy of every single book you and your family possess. Children's books, history, magic, comedy, you name it." Both immediately responded. "Agreed."
"Actually, I want one last thing and in exchange I'll add ten more on top for each of you." "Please, go ahead." Said Rias, smiling eagerly. "I want a way for me to enter the underworld." Rias's face grew serious and pondered her response. "That could be done. I can't guarantee it but I'll ask."
"I understand. So how long will it take for me to get my payment?"
"We would have to take inventory of every book we have, place orders, some would arrive sooner than others…" Rias tapped her foot and placed a hand on her chin in thought.
Sona then piped in with her side of the bargain. "I make a habit of buying two of every book so time is cut down drastically. My family unfortunately doesn't but I know it would take no more than a month."
Rias then followed up. "I can also guarantee that. So do we all have a deal?"
"Let's get it in writing."
"President, what about the familiars?"
"Oh right! Thank you Akeno. Stop by the day after tomorrow at Six in the morning. We'll continue then."
"I understand. The day after tomorrow it is." Six then left and returned to the hotel they had stayed at, deciding to spend the next few days studying Hiragana. After two days had passed, Robert walked to the school dressed in the Kuoh uniform imitation with the umbrella to cover his face and the riot gear helmet as an added precaution. On the way there he encountered Issei, Kiba, and Asia on the way there.
"Morning Mr Hyoudou, Mr Kiba, and Miss Argento."
Not used to being talked to so formally, Issei blundered his greeting. "Oh-uhh good morning Mr House." Asia, unsure how to address Robert, copied Issei. "Muh-morning Mr House." "Good morning Mr House." Kiba said naturally along with a wave. The four walked into the school and a woman with white hair in a maid dress.
"Miss Grayfia?" Issei asked, confused on why she would be here.
Rias saw Robert and sighed. "Oh right, we did agree to meet today. We'll talk after this."
The woman in the maid dress named Grayfia turned to the recent arrivals. "May I begin?" Then looked at Rias for confirmation.
She held her hand motioning Grayfia to stop. "It's alright. Everyo-" Rias was then suddenly cut off by the appearance of a magic circle and an eruption of fire from the center of the circle.
Robert immediately placed his hand on the Mysterious Magnum in his pocket. Ready to fire a hole through the duster at any moment.
The man chuckled upon arriving. "I haven't been to the human realm in a long time. I've come to see you, my beloved Rias." The man proudly declared. When Riser greeted Rias her smile was quickly replaced with a frown.
"Who is this guy?" Asked Issei.
Grayfia then turned to address Rias's peerage. "This gentleman is Riser Phenex, a pure blooded devil, the third son of the house of Phenex, and the fiance of Rias Gremory."
Riser strode next to Rias, sat down, and wrapped his arm around her. He played with her hair and placed a hand on her upper thigh. Rias went from frowning to scowling and glaring at Riser.
I've known this man for one minute and already hate him. I'd love to have him vivisected.
Rias brushed off his arm and walked away. "I've told you Riser. I will not marry you." Riser chuckled at her words. "So you say, but think of your family's situation. You're the sole heir to the house of Gremory, if you don't marry then the bloodline ends with you. Over half of the seventy two clans are dead, us pure bloods need to stick together."
That least bit caught Robert's attention. He immediately began taking notes.
"Your concern is noted! However, the agreement is for me to spend my time as I PLEASE until I graduate from a university!" Rias took a deep breath, doing her best to calm herself.
She stared straight at Riser. "I have no intention of failing my family and if I take a husband, it will be one I choose."
Riser lost his smile when he heard those words. "Rias, I come here to the human world I hate so much, with its intolerable fire and wind that I'm constantly subjected to, I ask for your hand with the best of intentions, and then you act like this?"
Fire and wind? Can he sense something I can't?
"Since neither of you can come to an agreement, it was suggested that this be settled through a Rating Game by both Houses" Rias became momentarily speechless at the suggestion.
"What's a rating game?" Issei muttered to Kiba. "A game between two peerages where they fight each other." He whispered.
"Although you're not allowed to participate because you're underage, exceptions are made for when two families are in dispute." Rias's irritation grew even greater. "So my father and the others would rather settle this through a match if I rejected the engagement… just how much do they intend to interfere in my life!"
"Do you decline to settle this through a rating game?" Asked Grayfia. "No. I didn't expect this but I accept." "Oh? Interesting. I'm old enough to play so I've got plenty of experience. So much so that I've yet to lose. Are you fine with that Rias?"
"Of course. We'll gladly hand deliver you your first defeat." Riser then glanced at the rest of the occupants in the room. "So they're your servants?" Rias crossed her arms. "Your point is?" "That this won't take long. Only your queen is any danger to my team." Riser then snapped his fingers summoning another fiery portal, when the flames died down, fifteen people appeared, all girls. One in a kimono, another in armor befitting a knight, a red chinese dress, a pair of twins, and various more.
So polygamy is accepted by devils. Never did get how people were ok with that.
"Ah no, I'm not a part of her peerage. I'm simply here for a pact so I'll get out of your way." Robert then went to the corner of the room and leaned against the wall. Typing rapidly on the Pip-Boy, trying to take note of any worthwhile information. Then took a quick look up and saw Issei's eyes getting watery.
What the… is Issei about to cry?
Riser pointed at Issei. "Uh Rias, your servant. What's wrong with him?" He asked, clearly confused by the sudden waterworks.
Rias massaged her temples knowing what Issei was so emotional about. "His dream is to have a harem of his own. I'm sure your servants moved him to tears."
"Disgusting."
"Repulsive."
"Master Riser, this guy's gross!" Said three girls from Riser's peerage.
"There's no need for that girls, it's only natural for a low class devil to look up to me. Let's show him how passionate we are." Riser then put his arms around two girls next to him and kissed the one on his left.
Right in front of the girl he wants to marry? I get the feeling most devils are like him. Gremory and Sitri are probably rare exceptions.
Issei's irritation reached its tipping point when he saw that. "A guy like you doesn't deserve president!" "Oh really? Despite wishing just moments ago you were like me?"
"You're engaged but you still play with other girls!"
"Great men are known to be surrounded by women. It's very common in human history for a king or emperor to have many wives or concubines."
"Great man my ass! You're just some birdbrain! A roasted chicken!" Riser quickly lost his temper at Issei's words. "You disrespectful little- I don't want to hear anything from some poor, virgin, weakling! Forget it, let's settle this here!" Issei then immediately activated his boosted gear and Riser's flames began to grow hotter by the second.
Grayfia then got in between Riser and Issei. "You'll wait until the rating game to fight. Or I will make you." Rias put her hand on Issei's shoulder, causing him to stop and Riser died down his flames when he heard her threat.
"Fine. Rias, how about we hold our game in ten days? I'd hate for this to be boring so I'll allow it." "Is this supposed to be a handicap?" She asked, trying her best to keep her anger hidden.
"You should train your servants. Especially that one." Riser then pointed at Issei. "That way I can beat him in front of everyone and he'll have zero excuse." Rias's eyes widened briefly and she quickly nodded. "Fine. But I want twenty days."
Riser dismissively shrugged at her request. "Fine. The outcome won't change." Satisfied Riser activated a magic circle and left with his peerage.
"I'll be back in twenty days to pick you up." Grayfia then bowed and left via magic circle. Once she left, Rias then looked towards Robert. "Thanks for the help. If you weren't here I would've accepted ten days without thinking." Issei tilted his head, puzzled. "Huh? How did he help? He was quiet the whole time."
Rias pointed at the wall at the end of the other side of the room. "Robert got behind Riser's peerage, held up two fingers and made a zero with his other hand when Riser said the number of days until the fight."
"At first, I wanted the exchange to be done when all the books were here. But after seeing him, I'll gladly wait if it means he gets his ass beat." Robert layed down the duffle bag on the floor and pulled out 30 stimpacks. "By the way, is there a way for me to spectate? I'd love to see his jaw get dislocated." Rias chuckled at the question. "I'll see what I can do."
"President, I believe there was something else you wanted to speak about?" Akeno opened up a drawer and handed Rias some bullet casings. "Right. Robert, last week we were searching for a stray devil and when we arrived at its location, there wasn't a body. We knew it was there because we detected the devil's blood, the bullets aren't blessed, and the caliber you have is the same one we found there."
"So you're asking if I killed it?" Rias nodded at his question. "I did. I heard a scream, went to investigate and the thing attacked me." "And the body?" "I chopped it up and incinerated it. Why?"
"I just wanted to confirm whether it was you who killed it. You saved us the trouble but in the future please tell me so we can dispose of it."
"Gotcha"
"Ok everyone, we'll be leaving town so when you get home start packing."
"headin' to a boot camp?"
"Not exactly. I have a place up in the mountains. We'll be there."
"Well good luck. Could you direct me to where Miss Sitri is?"
"Oh, no need, she'll be here any minute. How about some tea while we wait?" Rias then glances towards Akeno and she went to prepare some tea.
"No thanks." Robert then stared at the chess board on her desk and its beautifully carved pieces.
"They're well made aren't they? How about a quick game?"
"I'd love to but I've never played."
"Don't worry, it's easy. The goal is to put the king in a spot where it can't move. Pawns can move one or two spaces at the start then only one after that…" After a speedy explanation they began playing. Rias gave Robert white as a handicap since it was his first time.
Robert moved his pawn to the center of the board at E4 and Rias did the same with her pawn at E5. He then moved the knight to F3 making it capable of taking out the pawn and she moved her own knight in the same way. He put another pawn at the center at D4 and Rias took the pawn with her own immediately. White bishop then moves to C4 and black bishop goes right in front of it at C5. White pawn is moved forward to C3 and the black pawn at D4 takes it.
Hmm. She's taken two of my pawns.I'll try something else.
The white bishop was moved to F7 taking the pawn, placing the bishop next to the king and checking it. Rias chuckled and had her king take the bishop. White queen was then moved forward to D5 putting next to the bishop and again putting the king in check. Rias had no choice but to move the king and after she did the queen took the bishop, putting the king in check. Black queen was then moved to E7 putting the white queen in line of sight.
A few minutes later Akeno returned with the tea and placed a cup on the desk. "Here's your tea president."
"Thank you Akeno. Robert, you're doing fine for your first time."
"Thanks. I can't tell if i'm doing well or not since we have the same number of pieces."
As the game progressed it was difficult to tell who was winning. White queen took black queen, black knight took white queen, Robert castled his right rook and king, black bishop took knight, white pawn took bishop, Black knight took pawn, which was taken by white rook. When that last move happened Rias had realized her situation.
Is this really his first time? Only Sona gives me this much trouble. I might actually lose.
Rias then made another blunder. She had her rook take white knight..
Rias took a final sip of her tea. "I concede." She said, Giving a small shock to everyone.[8]
The moment Rias conceded, a knock was heard on the door and Sona along with a girl wearing glasses and long black hair entered.
"Perfect timing. Miss Sitri, when can you have your books delivered?" Sona created a magic circle and out of it appeared dozens of books stacked on top of one another.
"These are just yours right? The rest will take some time?"
"Yes. In two to three weeks I'll have the rest of them ready."
"How about I give you half now and the other half when you bring me the rest?"
Sona nodded. "Agreed." Robert then took out fifteen stimpacks and handed them to Sona. Then pulled out seven more duffle bags and barely managed to fit all the books inside them.
"Issei, please help our guest with his bags." Issei nodded and helped Robert take the bags outside and once they were outside Issei spoke to Robert. "So uh, thanks for the help with Asia. When you healed me, earlier that day was the last time I saw her. I wouldn't have known she was in trouble if you didn't tell us."
"No problem. Asia is an innocent and naive girl. She reminds me of myself when I was younger."
"That's good to hear because I was hoping you could help us in our fight against Riser." Issei then bowed deeply with his face staring straight at the floor.
"I'm not to-"
"Please! You helped president with negotiations, even gave her those stimpacks, and helped us against Raynare! I can tell you're good with strategy and I feel like we need all the help we can get."
Maybe this is a golden opportunity. Helping them train will let me learn more about devils. Their strengths, weaknesses, thought process, defining traits, the more I know the better.
"Ask Miss Gremory and if she agrees I'll go but first, let's take the other bags outside."
Issei nodded and they took the rest of the bags outside. "I'll wait here while you ask. If she says no, just knock on the door."
Issei rushed back inside and Robert waited in front of the door.
Doubt she'll agree. Robert opened up a duffle bag and picked up the first history book he saw. It was labeled 'Devil History: Connecting with the Past'.
Guess I'll start with this one. Best ask that fallen for her side of history. I wouldn't be surprised if historians took some liberties.
Issei interrupted his thoughts by bursting the door open. "She said yes!"
What the-why-no, calm down and think. She obviously hates Riser, her family is pressuring her, she has two inexperienced members, she's never been in a rating game, Riser is more experienced, and it's sixteen vs six. Yeah, no wonder she agreed.
"Well, alright. I'll just read these while I'm there." Rias then walked outside to meet Robert.
"I admit, I was unsure of how much help you could be but Issei convinced me otherwise. We need all the help we can get and you've got a great strategic mind if you can beat me on your first time playing chess." Confessed Rias.
"I just have one condition."
"Name it. I'll do everything in my power to grant it"
"When I came here a few days ago you spoke of familiars. I want one."
"Done. Just be aware that every familiar is different. Some are less likely to become yours by various factors."
"Understood. So when we headin' up to the mountains?"
"Tomorrow. Come back here at six in the morning and we'll start heading towards the mountains."
"Gotcha."
Tomorrow morning Robert followed the group up into Japan's mountain range. Eventually they approached what appeared to be a random area but turned out to be a magically concealed vacation home a third way up the mountain. He couldn't help but think of all the implications this could have.
Nobody's found it. Not even by accident. Some sort of magic spell or whatever is influencing people from approaching the area. Most likely built by devils. Seems unnecessary to have humans do this and then erase their memory. Too bad for them their mind altering won't work on me.
"Once we get inside, I recommend everyone get changed, grab some water, since we'll start training immediately."
"Immediately!? I didn't think you'd be so cruel." Whined Issei at Robert's suggestion.
"Mr Hyoudou, you're in no position to complain. Your master's future therefore, your future depends on this. If you lose, everytime you see Miss Gremory, you'll remember how you failed her when she needed you most."
Issei's facial expression immediately changed and his expression was that of a focus. Everyone became more worried as a result but each took Robert's words in stride as a stern, but needed reminder.
After dropping off luggage in the living room Issei immediately dropped to the floor from exhaustion. "Get changed and grab some water. We'll meet outside in fifteen minutes." Robert then pulled out various folders each named after a member of Riser's peerage and began reading through what information Rias gathered on each one.
After everyone gathered outside Robert began instructing on what they'll be doing for the day. "Ok Mr Hyoudou, you'll be running from here down to the bottom of the mountain. The goal is to get a baseline for your endurance then move up from there. Mr Kiba, you'll be on defense while Miss Koneko, Miss Gremory, and Miss Akeno attack you. The goal is to learn to deal with multiple enemies at once. Then after about half an hour you'll all stop and discuss what you did good and what you need to work on. Don't hold back, Miss Argento will heal any injuries you get. Any questions?" Since nobody spoke up after a few seconds of waiting they began.
Robert pulled out a stopwatch from their pocket then turned to Issei. "The timer starts when you move and ends when you get back here. Now go." He nodded then went to the nearby path and began jogging.
Robert then turned to the rest of the peerage. "On my mark. Three, two, one, go." They nodded and Kiba faced the girls with one of his demon swords.
Akeno and Rias immediately spread their wings and flew upwards launching their attacks as quickly as they could. Kiba, using his inherent immense speed, ran towards Koneko. Koneko waited a split second for Kiba to approach, leaned hard to her right, narrowly dodging the slash that was aimed at cutting her from the hip to shoulder.
Kiba followed up on his first slash by swinging down his sword vertically, to which Koneko hopped back out of range just in time. Near the end of his swing Kiba was hit by a bolt of Akeno's holy lightning.
He looked upwards, saw both Rias and Akeno next to each other along with another lightning bolt trailing behind a firebolt seconds away from him.
The moment Kiba's attention shifted, Koneko ran towards him, lifted her right leg, then side kicked him straight on his left knee, she reset her leg and side kicked him in the stomach.
Kiba's bit his lip when he felt the impact on his knee, gasped in pain when his body folded forward at the follow up kick, he swung his blade at her thigh, landing a mid depth cut on it as she brought back her leg after the last hit.
Kiba dropped to his good knee, both spells narrowly flew over his head seconds after he did so, thrust his sword at her other thigh, landing another mid depth cut on Koneko.
As Kiba stood up a lightning bolt flew between his legs, Kiba once again glanced up to find his attackers, saw the follow up firebolt closing in, then plunged his sword into the ground.
"Sword Birth!"
A dozen swords then erupted from the earth, Kiba took cover behind them, after the attack hit the swords he picked one up and hurled it with all his might at Akeno. Surprised by the attack, Akeno didn't react as quickly as she could have, only managing to just barely avoid the sword.
Rias launched a widespread fire spell over Kiba's location, intent on flushing him out of his cover. Kiba used his immense speed again to bolt out of there, he then ran straight towards Koneko, aiming at her legs again he thrust his sword.
Right before Kiba thrusted his sword, Koneko rolled to her left, narrowly avoiding his follow up downward swing. The moment she was back on her feet after the roll, she crouched then swung her leg as hard as she could to sweep him. Kiba expected another attack targeted at his legs but not a sweep, raising his lead leg out of instinct, but didn't move from his position causing the sweeping attack to be all the more successful by only tripping one leg instead of two.
As the fight progressed Kiba was hit more and more by Akeno's holy lightning, Rias's firebolts, and Koneko's close range attacks, eventually taking their toll and he tripped landing on his rear exhausted.
"Ok, stop! That's enough. Well done all of you. Miss Argento, go heal 'em starting with Mr Kiba then onto Miss Koneko." She then ran to Kiba and began healing his bruises, Robert crouched in front of Kiba examining his knee.
"Is the pain fading away?" Kiba nodded in response. The knee looked reddish, noticeable swelling, had a faint shoe imprint on it, the calf a light purple and blue bruise the size of a thumb.
"I'm going to gently and slowly feel it for any tenderness or unusual movement. Tell me if it hurts ok?" Kiba nodded and looked at his knee as Robert cautiously touched it. When he reached the top of the knee he grunted slightly in pain and Robert quickly retracted his hand then continued examining the knee.
"Ok, it's not dislocated so this'll heal properly."
After Asia healed him, Kiba carefully got up and walked around a bit. "Thanks Asia."
Robert then waved the girls to come over. "Now, let's talk about the good and what to work on. First, good job you two for immediately taking to the air. Kiba, good throwing your sword and aimin' for the wings. Koneko, well done on striking Kiba's knees, it definitely made it harder for him to make use of his speed advantage."
"Now here's what to work on. Offense team, you need to communicate more either vocally or indirectly. If you're able to have some magic walkie talkie to communicate with each other, set it up. If that's not possible, use an attack as a signal for an upcoming attack which'll target a wide area. Miss Koneko will know that the attack is coming so she'll get away just in time to not be hit"
"So, when Rias uses her firebolt, Koneko will know that's the signal to get out of the way, I then use my holy lightning to cover a wide area?"
"Exactly. Mister Kiba, use your wings to close in on enemies in the air. Also try to develop some sort of ranged attack. Your spear could be dodged, deflected, hell I wouldn't be surprised if someone was good enough to catch it."
"The same applies to you too, Miss Koneko. Maybe you could pick up a rock and throw it really fast? How it's done doesn't matter as long as you find a way."
After a full five minutes had gone by they began practicing again. Koneko started off by picking up a rock off the ground, threw her arm back, twisted her hips, and threw it as hard as she could.
Kiba didn't expect the fight to immediately start off this way so his reaction to it wasn't as fast as it could be but he dodged it nonetheless. The moment he hopped to his right to avoid it Akeno sent a thunderbolt straight towards him. Kiba didn't even look up to what was coming his way and simply dashed forwards a bit.
The second he landed, Rias sent her firebolt to him. Kiba didn't break his line of sight with Koneko who was running his way. He did notice that the ground was beginning to grow brighter and brighter. He took that as his hint that another projectile was on its way and now that Koneko was less than two seconds away if he used his knight's speed, he bolted straight towards her.
Koneko's response to the blur running straight towards her was to jump straight into the air, going ten feet or about three meters into the air. The second she jumped off the ground the spot she was on was hit with a huge blast of holy lightning. The attack itself didn't reach very high but covered a lot of ground.
Kiba's legs and feet were hit by holy lightning, causing a few albeit small, first degree burns due to the holy affinity, his muscles to contract and spasm making him lose his balance. Knowing he'd be doomed if he stayed there longer he spread his bat like wings and took to the sky.
Not even two seconds after he was airborne Koneko rushed him, slamming a powerful left hook straight against his jaw. He flew straight back towards the ground crashing landing on his back. When he opened his eyes he saw Akeno launch another lightning bolt towards him.
Kiba stabbed the earth into the ground.
"Sword birth!"
The holy lightning struck a few swords conducting their electricity causing slight rust and some to cleave visible cracks in the blades. Kiba picked up a sword then aimed for Akeno.
The moment he did so Koneko rushed him again, Kiba then changed his aim straight towards her and threw the sword. Not expecting the aim change, the sword's double edge created deep cuts in both thighs.
Kiba then picked up a greatsword that was far too large for any human, probably considered just a hunk of iron, but in Kiba's hands, no sword was useless. Kiba lifted the sword one handed, brought the hilt to his shoulder and launched it with all his might.
The greatsword soared through the air towards Akeno, who simply leaned to her left a little and she watched the sword begin to fall.
When she turned back to Kiba she saw him make another copy, hurl it at her, use his immense speed to run behind her, then use his wings to fly as fast as he could vertically, and catch the first sword thrown.
Once he grabbed it he closed the range between him and Akeno. Rias got behind Kiba, sending a firebolt towards his head, in response he threw his sword again and with their mid range proximity, she had far less time to react, the sword cleanly pierced her left wing, she lost balance and began plummeting to the ground.
Immediately after, Kiba was then struck by a powerful holy lightning strike causing him to also fall to the earth. Kiba saw the second copy was in the ground nearby his landing point, he did his best to roll with the fall, with his head still shaky he ran for the sword.
He picked up the sword then turned to Akeno, then he suddenly felt a foot slam into his calf causing him to fall forwards. Koneko had gotten behind him, kicked him to prevent him from running, and landed a demolishing knee on his ribs from behind.
Kiba turned as fell, barely managing to slap Koneko in the face with the broadside of the greatsword before dropping it. Once his back slammed onto the ground he kicked her in the stomach twice, scrambling to stand up, he glanced up and saw a firebolt heading to him.
He dropped to his knees and the attack flew over his head, burning a few strands of hair, and hit Koneko straight in the face. Knowing another chance may not pass up, Kiba picked up the greatsword again, landed deep cuts all over Koneko's arms and finished off with slamming the broadside of his greatsword to her jaw, causing her to fall to the ground.
As the fight raged on, Issei finally returned from the run, breathing heavily, going at a speed walk pace.
"Time. How long do you think that was?"
Not even having the energy to speak, he shrugged his shoulders.
"Twenty one minutes and thirty four seconds. You're going to take a 8 minute break then go again. Miss Argento, can you please come get him a water bottle?" Asia looked away from the fight and almost yelped from how exhausted Issei was. His entire shirt was drenched in sweat, his legs were a little shaky, and he looked like he'd fall over any second. She rushed to him, handing him her steel bottle, which he drank just like a certain homeless man begging for water.
Issei sat on the ground and watched the fight. Koneko was knocked out, Rias was fighting Kiba on the ground while Akeno fought from the air. Over time Kiba landed more and more hits and Rias and a few on Akeno but sooner or later, somethings gotta give. The girls decided to flood the entire area with their magic attacks, although Rias was in the radius and took damage, Kiba took far more, falling to his knees, using his sword as support.
"Ok, that's enough! Miss Argento, let's start with Miss Koneko then Mr Kiba." Robert then examined everyone for any injuries that would heal improperly and after concluding they'd be fine, Asia healed them.
"Mr Hyoudou, time's up, start running and remember, the goal is to get a better time." Issei nodded and began his run back down the mountain.
For the next four hours the combatants practiced while Issei ran. They pointed out mistakes, gave tips, swapped out who would be on defense, and the offensive team focused on teamwork and communication.
"Ok, stop! Good work, all of you. It's time for lunch and y'all deserve a good break. Miss Argento, here's the stopwatch for Issei, don't stop the timer until he's within arm's reach. Consider this free time. Robert then went inside to make everyone lunch.
While in the kitchen he held a jug that had a blood red residue inside it.
Should I take this chance to test this on devils? No, I need to be patient. Eventually, I'll capture one alive so I shouldn't jeopardize this. Future rewards far outweigh a simple test. They may even be able to detect it just by smell or some magic.
Rias then entered the room still in her sweatshirt and pants. "Robert, you're making lunch? I thought you went to read some more. Thank you, but from now on let Issei and Asia handle it."
"I understand. May I ask why?" "It's so they can practice their magic a bit more. We want to make them practice as much as possible."
"I understand. I'll keep that in mind for future training. Lunch is almost ready so please go sit in the dining room. I'll tell the others." Rias then left the room and Robert then turned off the stove, cleaned up cooking materials, and carried plates to the table.
After everyone had arrived they sat down and ate. Lunch consisted of salt and pepper seasoned salmon, rice, chopped potatoes with carrots, and an omelet mixed in tomatoes and ham.
"You'll have an hour of free time after this then it's back to practice." Robert then pulled out a folder containing info on Riser's queen and read through it as he ate. Rias turned towards Robert as she ate. "I'm curious Robert, why did you agree to help us?"
"I want a familiar of my own. I've never had the opportunity to get one myself." Robert said as he ate a piece of his omelet. "What kind of familiar would you like?" "I'd prefer the smartest one but, a familiar that is the physically strongest, fastest, or has the most powerful abilities would do." "Well you're definitely different from Issei. He wanted a familiar that looked like a woman and a slime could melt clothes."
"I'd feel bad for any female familiar that belonged to him." Rias gave a small chuckle when she said that. "Robert, when did you come to Japan?"
Nice try but this is far from subtle to me. She's asking during lunch too. Possibly trying out the snack man effect?
"I came a few days ago. I went around trying out food, visiting landmarks, and visiting the library. That sort of stuff." "Are you from America?"
America? Nobody calls it that anymo-
"We remember. America." Robert heard Ulysses' voice in his mind.
"Uh yeah. I'm from there." "Really? What's it like there?" Asked Asia excitedly.
Robert then thought back to his experiences in the mojave. Most involved blood.
"Well, the food portion sizes are much larger, everyone is more vocal than they are here, and there's people from all over who live there."
"From all over?" Asia questioned. "Yeah. America is…" Flashbacks of the Divide went through his mind. "...a country of immigrants."
Not wanting to speak on the subject any longer, Robert quickly finished the rest of the plate, and went to an empty room to continue reading. After about an hour of it was time to get back to practice and he gathered everyone back outside.
"Now we're going to do something different. Miss Koneko and Mr Kiba you're the close range fighters so you'll be teaching Mr Hyoudou how to fight. As for the rest of the ladies you'll be doing what Mr Hyoudou just did, run up and down the mountain. The time starts here and ends when you get back here."
Robert pulled out the stopwatch. "You probably won't need me but I'll sitting down right by the front door if you do. Now begin." Rias, Akeno, and Asia then began their run down the mountain while Koneko taught Issei how to fight hand to hand and Kiba taught him how to deal with weapon users.
This went on for another three hours making it five pm. Once the girls came back up the mountain a bit before five, Robert told everyone to stop. "Ok let's stop here for the day. No more practice for the day. It's free time for the rest of the day. Try to get to bed by eleven 'cause practice will start at eight tomorrow."
This schedule repeated for the next nine days. Everyone would meet outside at eight, Kiba, Koneko, Akeno, and Rias sparred while Issei ran up and down the mountain. Then it came lunch followed by an hour long break, training resumed with Kiba and Koneko teaching Issei close quarters combat. While the three did that Rias, Akeno, and Asia ran up and down the mountain to increase their stamina.
On the tenth day the schedule was altered. Everyone now took part in the sparring which had been changed from one vs many to an all out brawl with the only rule being to knock out or disable your opponents from attacking. Asia's goal in this was to heal someone without getting hit. She would constantly be on watch for any attacks while healing or running to the next person to heal.
She joined Issei in learning close quarters combat from Kiba and Koneko. Although she struggled greatly, her determination to do one thing better than she did last time helped her grow in skill.
The last change to the schedule on the tenth day was Robert teaching strategy.
"I recommend for this fight you do hit and run tactics. The idea is simple, hit your enemy then run away. Be sure to have an established escape route and someone to cover you as you escape. It's best to use ranged attacks for this."
"What about for close range fighters?" Asked Issei.
"I suggest ambushes. They're great regardless of how you fight if done successfully. If you're going to fight in an urban area hide in the buildings. If you can do just enough damage to immobilize the target, that way they'll call for support and you can attack them too."
"What if we're somewhere out in the open that has flat terrain?" Questioned Kiba.
"Good question. Know that it can be done but in this scenario you could be spotted, so have someone on lookout. You should set up what's called a 'foxhole'. There's many variations of it but for your team you should make them small enough only for one person. It starts by choosing a spot the enemy is likely to pass by, digging a hole, covering it with foliage or a fake top that is covered in dirt."
"Wait, how do we know the enemy is coming if we're in this hole and can't see?" Asked Rias as she wrote down notes.
"Have a hole that lets you see outside or better yet, have someone watch over the area as you hide and then they'll tell you when the enemy is at your position."
"So one of us could be in the hole and another watching from far away?" Rias inquired before drinking some coffee.
"Exactly. Another thing you could do is to play on your enemies emotions. If you can anger 'em, make 'em think they're safe, or make 'em overconfident, they'll be easier to manipulate and take advantage of. For example, y'all engage the enemy, then when they get a certain amount of hits in you fake being heavily injured or being unconscious. Then when they least expect it, you attack. It doesn't have to be in a direct fight however. Set a trap that is easy to see. They'll disarm it, think they're safe, then the real trap or ambush is sprung and you've got 'em."
"But if there's one thing I want you to take away from my lecture it's this: Do not be predictable."
"Even if you're physically stronger, faster, have more range, if the enemy knows what you're going to do before you do it, their chances of winning skyrocket but I think that's enough for today. Sleep is integral for learning something new so go get a good eight hours."
Eventually, the day of the fight came. Everyone returned home early in the morning on the day of the fight to rest. The fight was to begin at midnight and it was agreed to meet in the clubroom at ten to quickly review.
"Ok that's enough review. Now's the time to focus. Y'all each carrying a stimpack? Check that you've got four on you."
Everyone searched their pockets and confirmed they had four total with the exception of Asia. She had the remaining two. It was decided that everyone should have immediate access to them instead of waiting for the injured and Asia to meet up which would only end up wasting precious time.
A magic circle then showed up on the ground and out of it came Grayfia. She glanced at Robert before focusing on Rias. "Greetings everyone. I'm here to take you to the area where the fight will be held. Are you ready?"
Rias took a deep breath in and out and only nodded to her.
"Miss Grayfia, will I be able to spectate?" "Yes, Miss Sitri will also be spectating from the student council room. You may join her there."
"Sure, just let me give them one last word of advice."
"Oh! Uh-what's up?" Asked Issei. His nervousness was apparent with how jumpy he was with the response.
"Don't hold back. I promise you, they won't." He then left the building.
"Welcome, everyone. I, Grayfia servant to the House of Gremory will act as Arbiter for today's Rating Game between the house of Gremory and the House of Phenex. In the name of his Lordship Sirzechs Lucifer, I will ensure the fairness and impartiality of today's proceedings."
The school itself had been chosen as the location for the fight. Everyone was teleported through a magic circle to an exact replica of the entire school grounds. Even the wear and tear on the outside walls of the old school house had been copied.
Six sat in the student council room with Sona and Tsubaki spectating the game through several floating magic monitors.
This is insane. I'd never imagine magic allows someone to make some sort of pocket dimension. It'd be perfect for isolating someone. Definitely needs to be researched.
"Both teams have been transported to an area that will serve as their respective home base. Lady Rias, your home base will be the clubroom of the Occult Research Club in the old school building. Lord Riser, yours will be in the student council room in the new school building. Pawns, proceed to the immediate vicinity of the opposing team's home base when using a promotion. The match will continue until there's a victor or until it's dawn in the human world."
If I was Riser I'd go on full offense. I'd try to get as many pawns promoted as soon as possible. If he splits them up it'll be easier for Rias' team to fight them but at the same time other pawns who aren't fighting could get to the old building. If he sends them all together, they could beat anyone who gets in their way but Rias has that power of Destruction. One hit and it'd probably take out all of the pawns at once.
"Miss Sitri, I'm curious, what do you think each team intends to do?"
"I think Rias will try to take advantage of the gymnasium. It's next to both school buildings. Rias will avoid the schoolyard since Riser's team will be able to see most of the school from there."
"Interesting. I'm guessin' Rias is gonna make her first goal to eliminate all his pawns. Their chances of victory would plummet if all his pawns promoted."
"True it's a common strategy to attempt to promote your pawns before the enemy." "Why hasn't anybody teleported? Is it allowed in a rating game?" "Not in this one, no teleportation magic is allowed."
It turned out Sona's guess was correct. Both sides had sent people to take the Gymnasium. Rias sent Koneko and Issei while Riser sent four girls. One in a blue chinese dress with hair buns[9], two twins in a japanese school gym uniform[10], and the last wore an open red jacket called a haori, over a short white traditional japanese kimono, tied together with a red japanese belt called an obi.
I don't know what it is but there's something iconic about that girl in the blue dress. Feels like she would go well with a guy in a karate uniform and red headband.
Koneko fought against the girl in the blue dress as Issei ran away and dodged the other three who constantly targeted him. Despite fighting three girls at once, none of the girls managed to hit him. No doubt thanks to the long and harsh sparring sessions he took part in.
Suddenly, Issei's sacred gear began to radiate a bright green.
"I've been waiting for this!" He exclaimed then jumped towards the girls who were still mid air after their last attack and slapped them each. When he landed the girl in the kimono thrusted her staff straight towards his head. Issei leaned his head to right dodging it, then before she could retract it, grabbed it and punched the staff as hard as he could, breaking it.
"What th-"Before she could even express her surprise, issei slapped her shoulder then jumped back.
"We can't lose to this guy! Lord Riser would be furious if we lost to someone like him!" One of the twins yelled, followed by them rushing Issei again.
"Take this!" Issei then snapped his fingers. "Dress break!" The spot where Issei hit each girl flashed a magic circle then all of a sudden, the clothing of all the girls exploded. It didn't do any damage to the body itself, only destroying the clothes. The girls screamed in shock, instantly dropped their weapons, crouched down, and did their best to cover up their privates.
"I've always dreamed of doing something like this!"
What the…what a disgusting move yet…you can't argue with the results. The girls dropped their weapons. They're wide open right now.
Issei and Koneko then ran outside the building, which was then destroyed by Akeno. She had spent the whole time charging up her holy lightning to completely destroy the building and everything in it. Before that she was ordered to use magic to create a fog throughout the field that was only visible to the Riser's peerage.
Akeno was in the air stifling a chuckle "How's that?"
Oh! Now I get her plan. She's baiting the enemy into one spot until there's several of them, then the ground troops stall while Akeno charges up her holy lightning, then retreat when it's ready, and Akeno attacks the enemy.
"Ok you two, it'll be a while before Akeno can do that attack again so she'll come back to home base. Your goal is to meet up with Kiba."
"Ok lets get-" An earth rumbling explosion then rang out nearby. Issei turned his head and its source was Koneko. She'd been targeted by an unknown attacker and the explosion knocked Issei back a bit. If he were human, that explosion would've definitely killed him despite his distance from her. Issei ran to Koneko and somehow she was still conscious. Her body was heavily injured with burn marks all over her body. Issei picked her up off the ground.
"How's that?" Said a girl mockingly, flying stationary in the air. "Shame you managed to dodge a bit. It probably would have instantly taken you out. Now you have to stare at your friend as you realize your failure." The girl then chuckled at Issei and Koneko.
"Issei…the stimpack…"
"Oh right!" Issei pulled out one of his stimpacks, inserted the needle, and injected its contents. Then rapidly before his eyes her wounds began to heal. "Another." Issei nodded and injected her with his second.
The attacker's eyes widened in shock at Koneko's rapidly healing wounds. "Impossible! There's no way you obtained a Phoenix Tear!"
"Issei, let's run. She's got a range advantage over us and we need to meet up with Kiba anyway." Issei took a deep breath."Y-yeah you're right. I'd love to beat her up but I can't even fly. It'd be dumb to fight her."
"Like I'll let you run!" She then began casting another spell. Before she could finish though, she was struck from behind by a powerful lightning attack that was aimed at her wings.
"My, my, to think I would lose my temper so badly. But it sure felt good to pay you back for what you did to my cute little team member, Bomb Queen."
"You got lucky, Vestal of Thunder. Out of your whole peerage you're the one I want to fight the most." "Fine then, let's begin."
Thanks for reading! I'd love it if you told me what you'd like to see in a future chapter, what I could've done better, and what you liked. If you'd like to support me I'd appreciate it if you looked me up on Ko-Fi at ThatGuyAlex2077.
Sorry this one took so long. I've been a bit addicted to Elden Ring lately. Really fun game solo and with my friends in co-op.
