Sophia's POV
It was nerve racking waiting for my stupid brothers to get the other two stakes and I couldn't relax knowing that they were stupid enough to double cross us again and likely come straight for Nik and I could barely sleep last night as the fear keep manifesting into nightmares about being utterly and completely powerless frozen in place watching my brothers drive a white oak stake through his heart right in front of me and in my inability to sleep I kept Nik up meaning he was cranky today.
"They're stalling" I spoke as I paced behind Nik who was busy painting in order to distract himself. "Stefan should have been back with the stakes by now"
"Relax love, your burning a track in the floor" I rolled my eyes but couldn't stop because if I stopped I thought about my dream which just increased my anxiety.
"I can't take this waiting around, we have to do something find the stakes ourselves" I heard him drop his brush down before he grabbed my arms and held me in place.
"You need to relax, you kept me awake all night with your constant thrashing and talking in your sleep"
"I don't talk in my sleep" I protested frowning at him.
"Yeah you do actually" he smirked making my frown deepen.
"I couldn't sleep" I confessed even though he knew that and let out a deep heavy sigh. "I hate that these stakes are in my brothers hands, they want you dead and I wouldn't put it past them to double cross us again just to save the doppelbitch" he pulled me into a hug and I let it comfort me for the fact that he was okay...for now and that thought quickly brought me back to my anxieties.
"You need an outlet" he said and I rolled my eyes at him.
"I'm not in the mood for sex right now Nik"
"I wasn't insinuating sex" he laughed turning me to face his easel and he quickly had a fresh canvas on the stand then grabbed the paint brush and put it in my hand. "Painting is a metaphor for control, take control" he stepped back and gestured towards the canvas.
"I don't have an artistic bone in my body" I argued frowning at it. "My human days were spent with reading books or playing games with Stefan and Damon at the quarry, anything school, lesson or etiquette related I sucked at" I sighed hearing him chuckle a little before he stepped back up behind me and grabbed my hand and began moving it over the canvas splashing random bits of color that I just raised an eye at, art never really appealed to me.
Don't get me wrong I loved Nik's paintings, a lot of them were beautiful but his mood paintings always just looked like blobs of color to me and that's all this was to me, pointless blobs of color that would do nothing to help with this predicament my brothers had created as usual in which threatened everything I cared about.
After about ten minutes of me painting since Nik stepped away and let me move the brush myself all I saw was bits of color randomly painted and it wasn't doing a thing to break me out of my fears.
"Sorry Nik but this isn't working for me, paintings definitely your thing" I sighed dropping the brush onto the table turning to Nik. "I'm gonna find a more numbing outlet" I added before walking out of the room heading downstairs into the parlor grabbing the bourbon unscrewing the cap and drinking it straight out of the bottle.
I laid down on the couch letting my legs dangle over the armrest while I drank away to block out and forget about the time ticking away with my brothers taking their sweet ass time to hand over the stakes and after 20 minutes I was through two separate bottles of bourbon and felt a slight buzz and just when I was about to grab Nik's scotch my phone rang and I smiled at the caller ID.
"Kol, my bestest friend in the whole wide world!"
"Are you drunk Sophie?" he asked and I chuckled.
"Just a little bit, taking the edge of the stressful situation"
"Yes I heard about your brothers killing Finn"
"I'm sorry Kol" I apologized feeling like I owed it to him, Finn was their brother after all and even though I didn't know the guy I still felt bad that they'd lost a brother.
"I don't blame you darling, anyway I called to tell you that your twin brother and the doppelganger is in Denver"
"Seems Bonnie spilled the beans that we knew where her little brother was" I smirked since if they'd run all the way to Denver than that meant it was just Stefan here and that clearly I was right with the fact they were procrastinating handing over the stakes. "What happened?"
"Long story short, your twin deserves a good heart ripped out"
"He killed you again, didn't he?" I smirked already knowing by the anger in his voice.
"Staked me through the bloody heart with a baseball bat" he replied and I couldn't help laughing. "It's not funny Sophia Mikaelson"
"It's a little funny, he's killed you twice now and he's not even a third of your age, sounds like someone's going weak in his old age"
"Remind me to hate you the next time we see each other"
"Aw is the big baby upset" I laughed harder that I nearly fell off the couch clutching my sides when I heard him huff. "Besides we both know you could never hate me Kol"
"Anyway, do I have permission to kill your brother?" he asked and I rolled my eyes.
"No you don't, they have white oak stakes Kol and until we get them back then we need them alive but you do have my permission to hurt him and make sure it's good"
"As you wish darling" he replied and I could hear his smirk.
"Send pictures Kol" I sang before hanging up then stood and went in search of Nik seeing him coming down the stairs. "Hey Kol just called, Damon and Elena are in Denver rescuing the little Gilbert" I informed him and he stopped. "Which means I was right, they're up to something I can tell" he nodded his head.
"You were right" I raised my eyes at him.
"Can I get that in writing?" I asked smirking as he rolled his eyes at me.
"No, now come on I think it's time we see what's taking so long" I nodded my head and we left heading over to the Boarding House.
I walked straight in like usual and listened out for any sign of my younger brother and picked up voices from the basement but right now I was more determined to just find the stakes ourselves and given there was two left to find I knew my best bets were they were my brothers so I immediately headed up the stairs with Nik following me and went into each room to find their bedrooms.
"What are you doing?" he asked keeping his voice low so we didn't alert Stefan to our presence.
"Finding the stakes" I stated equally as low as I walked into a room that had the familiar scent of my twin and I smirked at his room figuring I could have some fun while I began looking for the stake going through his wardrobe pulling out all his clothes dropping them purposely on the floor before I moved into the adjoining bathroom when I didn't find it and went through all his cardboards knocking stuff off the shelves into the sinks.
"Your not exactly subtle love" Nik chuckled shaking his head at my antics.
"I'm not trying to be" I smirked picking up the toothbrush off the sink and dropped it into the toilet. "Oops" I laughed using the brush to get it out placing it back watching Nik roll his eyes as I made my way back into the bedroom. "Now if I know my twin brother and his completely pointless hiding skills..." I smirked walking towards the fireplace looking at the wood holder and kicked it over watching the piles of wood fall out along with one very pointy white oak stake. "Bingo" I picked it up and threw it towards Nik watching him catch it.
"You knew it was there the whole time, didn't you?" he asked with a knowing smirk and I just shrugged with a mock innocent smile.
"Damon's never really been creative with his hiding places, he used to hide his cookies in the fruit bowls" I smiled at the memory, it being one of the fonder ones I have of growing up with my brother.
"Why would he hide cookies in a fruit bowl?" Nik asked as we headed out since we already had Stefan's stake and knew the next one had to be with Alaric, that and we could hear the conversation down in the basement which already told us who had the last stake.
"Because he thought it'd be the last place Stefan and I would look, by hiding it in plain sight but I always knew where they were" I smiled a little before I realized why I was smiling and quickly covered it up as we walked into the basement. "Well this is depressing isn't it?" I spoke interrupting Stefan and Alaric. "Oh and I found that upstairs" I smirked pointing at Nik as he held up the stake.
"Now by our count there should be one more" Nik added walking towards Stefan.
"Yeah well it's gonna take a little more time" Stefan argued.
"Why because we're waiting for that one to pass out?" Nik asked pointing behind him towards Alaric. "No thanks, I think I'll just kill him"
"Well then you won't know the location of the other stake" Stefan protested.
"I can live with that" Nik argued and went to walk around Stefan but Stefan stopped him.
"Well I can't" he argued back and I frowned since I kind of agreed with my little brother, we couldn't take the chance that the stake fell into the wrong hands eventually and I couldn't take living with the fear that one day someone would come for Nik. "When we staked Finn, we discovered that killing an original vampire killed it's entire bloodline" my eyes widened since that meant...they couldn't kill Nik without killing me. "Now I don't know which one of you I'm descended from but I'd really rather not find out by dying so why don't we just find the stake destroy it so we can all be safe?"
"So the fate of the entire vampire race depends on you finding the stake?" I asked since I didn't quite like those odds.
"And to get it we need you to pass out which means that I feel totally justified doing this" Nik added speeding past Stefan and snapped Alaric's neck sending him toppling to the ground. "There" he smirks turning back towards Stefan. "Sleeping like a baby"
"Find that stake Stefan" I glared at him before I turned to leave hearing Nik follow and we left getting back into his car and he started driving while I played with the stake since it was weird to think this thing could wipe out an entire bloodline of vampires just by killing one original vampire.
"What's on your mind?" Nik spoke up after we'd been driving for nearly ten minutes in silence.
"Do you believe him...Stefan?" I asked without looking up from the stake. "That killing Finn killed probably 100's of vampires around the world?"
"It explains why we never heard from Sage mourning the death of her beloved Finn" he replied and I looked up with a deep frown.
"Well at least now we know why they were procrastinating" I huffed putting the stake into one of the cup holders in the center console. "They're gonna try and find out which one of you turned their bloodline and we both know if it's not you then the last stake has your name on it" I sighed turning to face the passenger window.
"Well have the stake before that happens" he argued but I wasn't convinced.
"I wonder if they'll even mourn me" I scoffed thinking about it, if Nik didn't turn their bloodline and they killed him they wouldn't care if they were killing me too.
"Sophia none of us are dying" he protested by I remained silent since there was nothing really to say except...
"Hey at least we'll both go at the same time, like some messed up Romeo and Juliet paradox" I laughed attempting to joke but he glared over at me clearly not understanding the irony of that sentence, I always knew if Nik ever died that I couldn't live in a world with him gone and now nature had literally made that so.
"I think I know why Damon and Elena went to Denver" he suddenly said changing the subject after another few minutes of awkward silence. "The little Gilbert can speak to the dead, they're trying to find out who their descended from" I frowned at that before my mind drifted to Kol.
"Then lets make sure they never find out" I replied and pulled out my phone scrolling through my contacts until I found Kol's and rang it listening to it ring a few times before the receiver picked up.
"Sophia, twice in one day, I'm flattered darling" I rolled my eyes.
"You called me earlier so it doesn't count" I argued watching Nik shake his head at our immediate banter. "We have to focus Kol, my idiot twin and the doppelbitch didn't just go to Denver to rescue little Gilbert from a sociopath-"
"Hey!" he yelled out making me laugh.
"You know I loved your sociopathic ways" I laughed seeing Nik give me a look and realized we were off topic again. "Anyway, when Finn died every vampire from his bloodline died as well, they're trying to find out who their line is descended from and little Gilbert can speak to the dead which means they are going through Rose-Marie whose very dead to find her sire" I remember Elijah telling me about Rose-Marie being Katherine's sire and I knew that she was dead.
"And you want me to make sure they don't find out?" he asked.
"If would be beneficial for all of us if you did and we both know you can't refuse a request from your best friend or give up the chance to enact revenge on my twin for stabbing you in the heart with a baseball bat" I laughed still finding that extremely entertaining and knew I wouldn't stop bringing it up for a while.
"Alright darling, I'll find Rose's sire"
"Love you bestie" I smirked since he really was the best and ignored Nik's look.
"Love you too, darling" he replied and I could hear the smirk in his voice before he hung up seeing Nik still looking at me.
"What?"
"You two seriously have the strangest friendship" he shook his head making me laugh a little.
"What can I say, besides you he's the only other person who gets me" I shrugged as we arrived at the mansion and he grabbed the stake before we got out and headed inside but immediately we realized something was wrong and followed our instinct to the parlor room where we saw Rebekah and on the floor was Esther looking quite dead.
"What's going on?" Nik asked her straight away staring down at his mothers body with a mixture of shock and a slight bit of fear.
"She's dead" Rebekah replied and I frowned since how the hell was she dead, there was no blood scent so clearly there wasn't any wounds.
Third Person's POV
Damon and Elena walk into the house that Mary Porter is supposed to be living in since they had traced her down through Jeremy speaking with Rose who Mary had sired with Elena shining a torch around before they stop hearing a noise from one of the rooms and head towards it going inside and there she shines the light on the wall where they see a woman, staked up against the wall with a wooden bat in her heart...dead.
"Mary..." Damon breathed out at the sight recognizing the woman.
"Quite contrary" Kol adds as he flips on a light and they spin to see him sitting on a chair with a baseball bat in his hand and devious smile before he gets up and walks towards the dead vampire. "Shame about Mary she used to be a blast, I don't quite know what happened I fear all the time she spent with my family might have ruined her" he smirked turning to look at the woman. "She was a bit of an original groupie"
"And were you her favorite?" Elena asks him thinking she could still get the answer out of him of who Mary's sire was.
"You mean, did I turn her I think I did" Kol replied before he paused. "But, no wait maybe it was Rebekah but there was also a Klaus period and let's not forget the Elijah affair" he smirked listing off all his siblings. "I spoke to the darling Sophia" he smirked towards Damon. "I know you're trying to find out who you descended from, now you never will" he turned to look up at Mary knowing it meant that Sophia was safe since when she'd called he knew she was in danger as the Mystic Falls gang was relentlessly trying to kill Niklaus which would mean they'd kill Sophia and Kol wasn't about to let that happen. "So...where did we leave off?" he asks looking at Damon tapping the bat against the ground before he hits him in the knee making Damon fall to the floor then hits his arm breaking it before he continues to hit him with the baseball bat repeatedly.
"Elena, get out of here!" Damon yells to Elena and she tries to leave but Kol rushes toward the door to intercepts her.
"According to my brother you're off-limits, please don't test me" he glares at her before he throws her to the bed right before Damon manages to stand and rushes over him attempting to strangle him.
"Don't touch her" Damon growled towards Kol but Kol hits him back and Damon is thrown against the wall falling back to the ground.
"Oh, dear I've hit the nerve, relax darling I just want us to be even, you snapped my neck, you killed my brother and then you humiliated me" Kol smirks before he hits Damon three times on the back "This ones from your sister" Kol added with an even wider smirk before swinging down harder than before "There, now we're even" he says before leaving the house texting a quick message to his favorite person.
All done darling, you owe me another night out – Kol
Sophia's POV
I was leaning in the doorway as Nik put their mothers body into a coffin for safe keeping but for some reason I didn't feel the same freedom I felt when Mikael died, it just didn't feel like the end and my feelings were never wrong so I made a mental note to talk to Nik about it later after we got the stake back which is where we were headed next to check in on Stefan's progress with Alaric but just as Nik turned for us to leave my phone buzzed and I pulled it out smiling at the message from Kol.
"Kol did it, he got to Rose's sire before Damon and Elena which means they'll never find out who their sire is and your safe, lover" I smirked at him as he smiled back and leant in kissing my forehead.
"And you owe him another night out" Nik said clearly having read the text out of the corner of his eyes.
"We'll get around to it, this last stake is more important" I shrugged before we turned and started heading out with Rebekah following us as we all headed to the Boarding House surprised to hear a commotion downstairs and decided to sit in the living area and wait for the news Stefan was about to get out of Alaric's alter ego.
"Where's the stake?!" Stefan asks him but Alaric doesn't answer and we heard Stefan hit him again before grunts. "I'm going to kill you in 3... 2...1-"
"It's in the cave" Alaric finally says. "Where no vampire can get it" he laughs clearly thinking that was gonna stop us and we listen as Stefan leaves him relocking the cell before he walks to the front door but turns when he sees us waiting.
"That wasn't too hard, was it?" Nik asked him as we all smile before Nik goes over and pours himself a glass while Rebekah goes and grabs Alaric coming back quickly and even I was impressed at the sight of Alaric's face covered in blood. "It's a little gratuitous don't you think Stefan, I would have been more gentle"
"I'm going to take him to the caves" Rebekah tells us before she looks at Alaric. "You're going to go inside and fetch me the stake and if you think you can hide, you're wrong" she tells him then they leave.
"And then there was three" Nik smirked holding up his glass while I turned to Stefan.
"I know about our brother's little mission to Denver" I informed him. "He failed" I smirked loving the fact that Kol came through like he always does for me.
"Not that that's news anymore" Nik added with an equally wide smirk.
"So what are you going to do now, Klaus?" Stefan asked turning to face Nik. "Are you going to kill me?"
"I haven't actually decided yet" Nik replied and I rolled my eyes knowing full well he wasn't going to kill Stefan, he still held hope that he'd one day realize they were supposed to be these great friends like they were in the 20's
"Oh sure you have, see you've had every chance and every excuse imaginable to do it but yet you haven't which means you don't want to" Stefan argues calling Nik's bluff.
"You know something, you're right" Nik agreed with him. "See, I'm still waiting for my old friend to come back, by the looks of it he's just beneath the surface waiting to come out and play, right ripper?" I scoffed quietly and rolled my eyes since I called that one.
"I've been fighting that part of myself thinking that if I repress it, it would go away but it won't and now that I've accepted it, it can't control me and neither can you, so...unless you're going to stake me...why don't you get the hell out of my house" Stefan bites back before he leaves us to see ourselves out.
"I think you want my brother as a sibling more than I do" I scoffed turning and started walking out hearing his footsteps follow. "He's never gonna be 20's Stefan again, you realize that right?" I asked as we got back into his car.
"I don't know, still hoping" he smirked as he started driving.
"This is like a payback thing isn't it, I'm such great friends with your brother and you want that relationship with Stefan?" I asked raising my eye in his direction.
"No one could ever have the weird relationship you and Kol have, love" he smirked at me and I rolled my eyes but couldn't help laughing a little.
"That's because Kolphia is epic and cannot be copied"
"You know that pet name just adds to the weirdness, right?" he asks looking over at me.
"It's not a pet name, it's a ship name as the teenagers like to call it in this century, like Brangelina which is Bratt Pitt and Angelina Jolie put together but Kol and I's is 100 times better, Kol and Sophia makes Kolphia" I explained since he was clearly uneducated.
"It's weird" he continued to say making me roll my eyes. "How come you don't use this 'ship name' thing with us?" he asks and I chuckled.
"Because us together makes Nikphia which sounds too much like necrophilia" I laughed when he looked over at me like I was crazy. "It does, no ship name works for us, can't even do Sophia and Klaus since that's Sophlaus which is just as strange" I laughed when he did. "Why are you jealous of Kol and I's relationship anyway?"
"Because my little brother is annoying and I don't like how close you are sometimes"
"He's my friend Nik and I think about him as a brother, you have nothing to ever worry about from Kol" I argued leaning over and kissed his cheek.
"I have someone else to worry about?" he asked in a joking tone.
"Your sexy when your jealous" I smirked leaving over and kissed him ignoring the fact that he wasn't watching the road but I did pull away before he crashed and settled for now to just hold his hand while we went home seeing as we had a body to move and get rid of.
