Naruto walked slowly through the darkened streets of Konoha, the headband tied tightly around his forehead. He glanced at his reflection in a shop window, smiling as the blue of his new headband gleamed under the moonlight.
I'm a ninja now.
The streets were mostly empty, with only a few windows lit. The ANBU had come swiftly after Mizuki's defeat, taking him into custody. They had gone and met the Hokage who told them what exactly happened 12 years ago and how he and the yondaime had hoped that Naruto would be seen as a hero, as well as how everything went wrong when false rumors spread. After everything Iruka had invited Naruto out for ramen, which he had gladly accepted. Who would say no to the food of the gods? After thanking Iruka, Teuchi, and Ayame for the great food, he had left, feeling lighter than ever.
As Naruto turned a corner, his apartment came into view. It was located in a worn-down building at the edge of the village, away from the bustling streets.
He pushed open the door, the hinges creaking. His small, cramped apartment was as he'd left it: cluttered with instant ramen cups and old clothes strewn across the floor.
Naruto let out a sigh, slumping against the door once it clicked shut. The weight of the day finally hit him.
His fingers brushed over his forehead protector, and tears welled up in his eyes.
He smiled through the tears, wiping them away quickly with his sleeve.
Kicking off his shoes, Naruto collapsed onto his bed, the thin mattress sagging under his weight. His head felt heavy, but in a good way.
Naruto stared at the ceiling. Suddenly, something came to mind: the second jutsu he learned, the Mukeiyaku Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Contractless Summoning Jutsu). Why not try it out?
Horse, Boar, Dog, Bird, Monkey, Ram
"Mukeiyaku Kuchiyose no Jutsu!" he called out, as he bit his finger and slammed the hand on the ground
A seal spread from his hand across the floor, and after a small poof accompanied by a white chakra cloud, a small, bipedal creature standing about 80 cm tall looked at Naruto with a curious gaze. Its body is predominantly grayish-brown, with a small hump on its back, giving it a unique shape. The underside of its belly and lower jaw is a lighter gray, creating a striking contrast with its darker upper body.
Its head is notably large compared to its body, featuring a blunt snout with a ridge above the nostrils. Two sharp teeth protrude from its lower jaw, while the upper jaw showcases two prominent, tooth-like spikes. Atop its head are two vibrant orange spikes, and it has dark markings around the lower edge of each eye.
Around its neck, Tyrunt has a spiky ruff of primitive white feathers. Its tiny forelimbs each have two white claws and the hind legs are robust and sturdy, featuring rectangular armor plating over the knees. Each foot has three prominent white claws, along with a smaller, fourth digit positioned off to the side without a claw. Tyrunt's short tail ends in an orange spike.
"Tyrunt!" it called out while looking around in confusion.
"Cool," Naruto said.
Naruto's eyes widened in excitement. "This is awesome!" he exclaimed, kneeling down to get a better look. Tyrunt tilted its head, still trying to grasp its surroundings.
"Can you understand me?" Naruto asked, hoping for a response. Tyrunt's bright orange spikes twitched, and it let out a soft growl.
"Tyrunt!" it repeated, its voice filled with curiosity but also confusion.
Naruto chuckled, feeling a rush of energy. "Looks like we're going to be great friends!"
Suddenly, Tyrunt darted forward, sniffing at a nearby trash can. With a swift motion, it knocked it over, sending trash flying everywhere. Naruto's eyes widened in surprise. "Hey! Wait—"
Tyrunt began to paw at the scattered wrappers and cans, its tail wagging in excitement. The small creature tackled a crumpled paper bag, biting down on it and tearing it apart with little effort.
"Whoa, calm down!" Naruto shouted, trying to grab Tyrunt, but it was too engrossed in its newfound playtime. The little creature let out playful growls, bouncing from one item to another, causing a ruckus.
As Naruto watched, a mixture of amusement and concern washed over him. "Tyrunt, stop! We can't make a mess like this!" he laughed, trying to contain the chaos.
But Tyrunt wasn't listening. It began to chase its own tail, getting tangled up in a string of discarded ramen cups. With a little leap, it tackled them, sending them flying.
"Alright, alright! I get it! You're excited!" Naruto called out, finally managing to catch Tyrunt by the scruff of its neck. "But we have to figure out what you can really do first!"
Tyrunt squirmed, trying to break free, but Naruto held on, his laughter echoing in the quiet night. "Let's see if we can do something cooler than trashing the place."
Naruto let go of Tyrunt and made his way out of the apartment. Luckily, no one else lived in this old building. His Jiji, the Hokage, had gifted it to him when he got accepted into the academy. Back then, it was in even worse shape. He had only managed to fix up his own apartment on the top floor, which took a lot of time and especially money. Behind the building was a large open space with a few training logs he used for practice. If he understood correctly, this place used to be the old ninja academy before they built the new one in the heart of Konoha.
He led Tyrunt outside to the open area, stopping in front of the weathered training dummies.
"Alright, how about you show me what you can do?" Naruto asked, crossing his arms and giving Tyrunt a nod.
"Tyrunt!" the creature responded with enthusiasm, lowering its head as it got ready. In the next moment, it charged at one of the wooden posts, tackling it with full force. The log cracked and was knocked clean out of the ground on impact, rolling a few feet away.
Naruto watched in awe as Tyrunt effortlessly knocked the training post away with its tackle. "Whoa... you're strong!" he exclaimed, eyes wide as he approached the now-severed post. 'It's like he didn't even try,' Naruto thought, running his fingers along the broken part of the log.
Tyrunt turned back towards Naruto, its tail flicking playfully before suddenly whipping around in his direction. Naruto blinked in confusion, not quite sure what had just happened, but something about him felt... off. He tried moving his arms, jumping a bit, but everything felt heavier, like his body wasn't responding the way it usually did.
"What the...?" Naruto muttered, scratching his head. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was more vulnerable somehow, like his usual defenses had been lowered. But just as quickly as it came, after about half a minute, the strange sensation faded, and he felt normal again.
He glanced at Tyrunt, who was now focusing on a small tree nearby. The creature narrowed its eyes, and suddenly, the tree began to wither. Its leaves shriveled up, the bark darkened, and after around four minutes the tree was nothing more than a brittle, lifeless stump.
Naruto's jaw dropped. "You... you did that?!" He stared at Tyrunt, who now looked visibly tired after the strange attack. The small creature swayed slightly, but it stood firm, determined not to show weakness.
Naruto walked over, kneeling down to Tyrunt's level. "That was awesome... but looks like it took a lot out of you," he said, reaching out to pat Tyrunt gently on the head.
Tyrunt let out a small growl of contentment, leaning into Naruto's hand.
Naruto smiled. "Alright, I think we should call it a night for now. Tomorrow, we'll figure out what else you can do."
With that, Naruto picked Tyrunt up, carrying the exhausted creature back inside. 'This jutsu... it's amazing,' Naruto thought as he made his way back to his apartment.
Over the next three days, Naruto and Tyrunt trained hard in the backyard from dawn till dusk. Iruka had told Naruto that the team assignments would take place in three days, so he decided to spend that time improving both his and Tyrunt's skills. By the second day, Naruto had finally figured out Tyrunt's second ability.
They had ventured into the forest that morning to hunt and stumbled upon a boar. Naruto threw a few kunai at it, but his aim was still lacking, and he missed the vital spots. The boar was only slightly injured. Seeing this, Tyrunt stepped in, using what Naruto had come to call "Tailwhip." Naruto, who had always been on the receiving end of that move, watched as the boar visibly slowed down, its defenses weakened.
'So that's what it does,' Naruto thought, watching carefully.
Seizing the moment, Naruto threw more kunai. Even though his aim hadn't improved much, this time the kunai sank deeper into the boar's hide, causing it more damage. With Tyrunt's support, Naruto was finally able to bring the boar down.
Panting, Naruto looked at Tyrunt, who was growling triumphantly. "Good job, Tyrunt," Naruto grinned.
Naruto and Tyrunt sat near the fallen boar, taking a moment to catch their breath. The training was paying off, and Naruto couldn't help but feel a sense of pride at how far they'd come in just a few days. Tyrunt was proving to be an invaluable partner, and Naruto's taijutsu and teamwork were improving steadily.
Naruto glanced down at his hands, still feeling the sting of kunai practice. 'I'm getting better,' he thought. 'But there's still so much more I need to learn before the team assignments. Without Tyrunt, I wouldn't have been able to take that boar down. I won't be the dead-last any longer.'
As they rested, his mind wandered back to the academy. He wondered what kind of team he'd be placed on, who his teammates would be, and—most importantly—what kind of sensei he'd get. He hoped they'd help him get stronger. He also hoped he'd get put on a team with Sakura. But the thought of his future teammates made him nervous. Would they continue treating him like they had all throughout the academy?
Naruto wasn't actually a bad student. In fact, he'd realized early on that the academy teachers were trying to fail him. It was impossible not to notice. During kunai and shuriken practice, he was always given unbalanced or blunt weapons. He had realized this when he received the proper ninja tools every Genin gets after graduation. The difference in balance had thrown off everything he had trained for, so he had to start his shurikenjutsu training all over again.
It wasn't just shuriken practice either. During taijutsu training, the teachers always gave him incorrect instructions for the basic Konoha technique, as if they thought he was blind. Whenever he tried to copy the other students, a teacher would "correct" him, forcing him back to a flawed stance. After a while, Naruto had started working on his own style in secret, but a teacher eventually caught on and beat him down, showing him that the "academy style" was supposedly superior. So, Naruto played along during lessons, only training his own style in private.
This pattern repeated across all his lessons—except for the Bunshin no Jutsu. No matter how much he practiced or how many hours he spent on it, even when Iruka personally helped him, it was hopeless. The jutsu simply wouldn't work for him, no matter how hard he tried.
He shook his head, refusing to dwell on those thoughts.
"We've got to keep getting stronger, Tyrunt," Naruto said, patting his partner's rough hide. "We can't let anyone hold us back!"
Tyrunt growled in agreement, its small, powerful body radiating energy.
Naruto stood up, brushing off the dirt from his pants. "Let's get this boar back. We can sell it to the butcher and use the money for more training supplies. We'll get even stronger tomorrow."
With Tyrunt at his side, Naruto started dragging the boar through the forest, his mind focused on the next challenge. He knew that the team assignments were just the beginning. There would be new enemies, tougher missions, and stronger opponents. But with Tyrunt by his side, Naruto was more determined than ever to prove everyone wrong and become the greatest ninja Konoha had ever seen.
Naruto was the first to arrive in the classroom. He picked a spot in the corner and sat Tyrunt on the chair next to him. The last few days had been tough on them both, but it had paid off. Tyrunt was now noticeably faster, and Naruto was amazed at how quickly his little companion's abilities were developing. The first ability, which he called "Tackle," had improved with Tyrunt's newfound speed and strength. His second ability, "Tail Whip," could now affect a target for a full minute, and Naruto had also gained some insight into the last ability—"Curse."
For now, Tyrunt could only use "Curse" on stationary targets, and it took around ten seconds to activate. The jutsu consumed about half of Tyrunt's chakra, but in return, it drained the target's chakra while boosting Tyrunt's strength and defense at the cost of some speed. The drain was significant, about 25% of a target's chakra per minute, though Naruto suspected there might be ways to break the technique. When Naruto had Tyrunt test it on him, after half an hour, he barely noticed any effect. He assumed it was because his chakra reserves were much larger than those of the plants and small animals they had tested on before.
Another thing they discovered was the risk of chakra exhaustion. If Tyrunt used "Curse" twice in quick succession, he would pass out from overexertion. Luckily, when they tried it, it only took the creature about five hours to recover fully. It was clear the technique was powerful, but it came with significant drawbacks, and Naruto had to be careful not to push Tyrunt too hard.
Ten minutes later, the first students started to trickle in. Most began to whisper and gossip after noticing Naruto, but he didn't let it bother him. That was, until two loud voices echoed from the doorway.
"First!" shouted a pink-haired girl with a large forehead, her headband tied to keep her hair back. She wore a red qipao dress.
"No, clearly I was first, Forehead!" argued a blonde girl with a ponytail and a long strand of hair hanging down the right side of her face. She wore a purple crop top and skirt, bandages peeking out beneath.
"Ino, Pig!"
"Forehead!"
"Troublesome," muttered a boy with spiky hair, who squeezed past the two girls. He wore a light jacket and gray pants, with chainmail underneath and a weapon pouch strapped above his right knee.
Before the two girls could fully turn their attention to him, they caught sight of a boy in the third row, his face resting on his hands as he brooded silently.
"Sasuke!" both girls cried out in unison, rushing to sit next to the object of their affection, each trying to outmaneuver the other.
Naruto shook his head with a sad smile. He'd liked Sakura for a long time, but she only had eyes for Sasuke. No matter how hard he tried, it was always Sasuke she fawned over. That stung, but Naruto had learned to live with it. He wasn't the same kid he was before. He had other things to focus on now—Tyrunt, his training, his dream of becoming Hokage.
Tyrunt, who was seemingly still unnoticed, oblivious to the human drama unfolding, simply watched the commotion with curiosity.
The spiky-haired boy arrived in the last row. "Morning, Naruto," he said.
"Morning, Shikamaru," Naruto replied, not looking up.
As Shikamaru pulled back the chair to sit, he noticed it was already occupied. Raising an eyebrow, he shrugged and plopped down next to the strange creature.
"Not going to ask?" Naruto inquired.
"Too troublesome," the lazy Nara replied, laying his head on the desk.
They shared an understanding. Shikamaru was the only real friend Naruto had. Despite finding Naruto troublesome at times—especially when he was loud or pulled a prank—Shikamaru was one of the few who saw past the mask Naruto wore.
"Where is Choji?" Naruto asked.
"Brought too little food. He didn't account for the excitement so he went to get some," the Nara replied.
It became silent in the last row.
"When did they tell you?" Shikamaru asked.
Naruto paused for a moment. "Three days ago. When did you find out?"
"Around three years ago. It wasn't hard. I just had to do some research to figuring out why everyone hated you and called you a demon. The only demon I knew of was the Nine-Tails, which coincidentally attacked on your birthday. A bit of digging and I discovered that bijuu can't be killed and are sealed into newborns. Don't worry, I know how to differentiate the kunai from the seal."
"Thanks," Naruto replied, a little surprised but grateful.
"So what about—"
"Quiet down!" Iruka called, still looking a bit banged up. "You will now be assigned to your teams."
"Let me be with Sasuke!" Sakura shouted.
"Shut up, Forehead! I'm going to be on Sasuke's team!" the blonde girl chimed in.
"Troublesome," both Naruto and Shikamaru sighed in unison.
The door opened again and Choji, with his arms full of food, walked in.
"Please take a seat," Iruka said.
Choji nodded and let himself down next to Shikamaru.
"Now," Iruka said "Team 1: Sora Takahashi, Yui Nakamura, Kenta Yamaguchi—Jonin Sensei Hikaru Sato."
"Team 2…"
"Team 7: Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha- Jonin sensei Kakashi Hatake!"
"Yeah!" Sakura jumped up in excitement.
"Team 8: Hinata Hyuga, Shino Aburame, Kiba Inuzuka- Jonin sensei Kurenai Yuhi."
"Team 9 is still in rotation from last year."
"Team 10: Ino Yamanaka, Shikamaru Nara, Choji Akimichi- Jonin sensei, Asuma Sarutobi."
Eventually, Naruto had enough. He pushed his chair back with a screech, drawing both Sasuke's and Sakura's attention, as well as waking Tyrunt from his nap. Naruto stood up and began making his way to the front of the room, Tyrunt drowsily following him.
Just as he reached the door, a deafening scream rang out from behind.
"Where do you think you're going? And what the hell is that?!" Sakura shrieked, pointing at Tyrunt with a disgusted expression.
Naruto turned back, giving Sasuke a quick glance. Unlike Sakura, Sasuke's gaze was filled with curiosity as he studied Tyrunt.
Naruto stared at Sakura for a moment, his irritation growing. He glanced down at Tyrunt, who had fully woken up and was now watching the commotion with his head tilted in confusion.
"Tyrunt's my partner," Naruto said coolly. "What's it to you?"
Sakura crossed her arms, her face still scrunched in disgust. "It looks weird, like some kind of oversized lizard. Are you seriously planning on bringing that thing along on missions?"
Naruto clenched his fists but kept his voice calm. "He's stronger than you think."
Sasuke, who had remained silent up until now, finally spoke up. "Where did you get it?"
Naruto turned his head toward him, a bit surprised by the question. "I summoned him."
Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "You know how to use summoning jutsu?"
Naruto grinned slightly. "Yeah, I do now."
Sakura, still skeptical, scoffed. "Even if you did summon it, that doesn't mean it's useful. You're still just the dead last, Naruto."
Naruto's smile faded, but he remained calm. "Whatever you say."
Before Sakura could retort, the door slid open, revealing a tall man with silver, gravity-defying hair, a mask covering the lower half of his face, and a hitaiate covering his left eye. He stepped into the room, glancing lazily at the trio.
"Team 7?" he asked, his tone bored.
"You're late!" Sakura yelled, turning her frustration on the newcomer.
"My first impression," the man said with a sigh, "you're noisy."
"We're meeting on the roof in five minutes," he added casually, before disappearing in a swirl of leaves.
Naruto glanced at Tyrunt before heading toward the door, with Sakura following behind, still glaring at him. Sasuke silently trailed after them.
Once they reached the roof, the masked man was already there, leaning casually against the railing, lazily looking them over. "My name is Kakashi Hatake. Before we start anything, let's do some introductions. You know, your likes, dislikes, dreams for the future… stuff like that." He paused, then added, "How about you start, pinkhead."
Sakura, excited to have a chance to speak, clasped her hands together and turned toward Kakashi. "I'm Sakura Haruno! My likes are…" She quickly glanced at Sasuke, her face flushing red. "I mean, the person I like is…" Another glance at Sasuke, and her blush deepened. "My dislikes…" Her eyes narrowed as she shot Naruto a glare. "…Naruto! And my dream…" She gazed dreamily at Sasuke, completely skipping over the rest of her introduction.
Kakashi nodded, his visible eye betraying little interest. "Uh-huh… Next."
Sasuke, sitting with his arms crossed and his expression brooding, finally spoke up. "Sasuke Uchiha. There are few things I like, and many things I dislike. As for my dream…" His fists clenched slightly. "No, it's not a dream. It's a reality. I will restore my clan and kill a certain someone."
Sakura blushed even harder, admiring Sasuke's intensity, while Kakashi gave a slow nod. "Right… and last but not least, you."
Naruto stepped forward confidently. "I'm Naruto Uzumaki! I like instant ramen, especially the ramen at Ichiraku! I also like my partner, Tyrunt!" He patted the creature on the head, causing Tyrunt to let out a happy growl. "I dislike the three minutes it takes for ramen to cook, and people who don't know anything about me." He grinned wide, his determination shining through. "My dream is to become Hokage, so everyone will finally recognize me!"
Kakashi raised an eyebrow. "And the… creature?"
Naruto glanced down at Tyrunt, who was sitting by his side, staring up at Kakashi with curiosity. "Oh, this is Tyrunt! He's my partner, and we've been training together. He's gonna help me get stronger and become Hokage!"
Kakashi's eye narrowed slightly as he looked from Naruto to Tyrunt. "Interesting… Well, now that we've got introductions out of the way, we'll begin our first mission tomorrow morning. But first…" His eye crinkled slightly, as if he was smiling beneath his mask. "We'll be doing some survival training."
"Survival training?" Sakura asked, confusion in her voice.
"Yeah," Kakashi replied, a slight edge to his tone. "Think of it as a test. I'll explain everything tomorrow. And one more thing…" He paused for dramatic effect. "Don't eat breakfast. You'll just end up puking."
