Chapter One: A Brave New World

The sun was out. The skies were blue.

Perfect day for a walk for some.

For Velma Dinkley, it was a great day to go to the local library. There was a librarian at the front desk. The lady at the front desk had big, thick black glasses and long red hair. She wore a green blouse that was buttoned up to the top of her neck and long earrings. This lady seemed kind and strict at the same time. There was a gold name tag with black letters on the right side of her shirt. It read: Jocelyn. Velma walked up to her and noticed that there were baskets for books. Miss Dinkley looked at her and said,

"Hello, I'm searching for something different to read." Velma paused. "Any recommendations?"

"Well, we have some new items. Why don't you try looking in that section?" Jocelyn suggested and pointed to a stack of books in the back.

Velma smiled and said, "Thank you."

Miss Dinkley walked over to the recommended section and searched for something to read. There were a few items that interested her and she placed the books into her basket. Velma sat down on the floor and started to read one of the books that she placed in the basket. It was a mystery book. Velma loved to solve mysteries. It was one of her favorite things to do. Miss Dinkley read the first page and flipped to the next page. She was reading it fast. She had so many books in her collection that she thought about adding this one to the bunch.

Velma walked over to another stack of books. She fumbled through the pages of one and put it in her basket. There were so many to choose from. She wished she could take them all home with her. Velma sat down and started to read another book. Then, once she was satisfied that she liked it, she added it to the basket as well. Miss Dinkley decided to visit another section and take a gander at the books on the shelves.

Meanwhile, in another world, Charlotte La Bouff was getting ready for the day. She was also known as Lottie. She put her makeup on and got on one of her favorite dresses. There was nothing much to do today. Her father had wanted to spend some time with his beloved daughter. So, the two went out for a picnic and had some breakfast. There were some favorite beignets and some fruit. Mr. La Bouff looked at his daughter and asked,

"Do you have any plans today?"

Charlotte shook her head. "No plans."

"Oh good, I thought we might take a walk." Mr. La Bouff said. Lottie smiled and nodded.

After breakfast, the two took a nice long walk around the town. There was beautiful music, cute shops, and fantastic restaurants. Then the two went home and Lottie went to her closet. She fiddled around with her dresses and then went to her makeup center. Lottie enjoyed playing with different types of makeup and seeing which type of look satisfied her. She was good at these things. Charlotte played with her lipstick shades until she found one that she liked.

Then she went to her eye shadow and found something that suited her. Lottie played with her blonde hair and put it up in a pink bow. She smiled at her look in the mirror and then went straight to her closet. Charlotte wanted something nice to wear. She wanted to change her look to match her makeup. She had fun trying on different outfits.

Back at the library, Velma started on another book. She placed that book in her basket when another book fell on top of her head. That hurt, Velma thought. She looked down and saw that the book was a fantasy book. Velma wasn't a fantasy girl. She believed in facts and truth, but this one looked interesting. Velma picked it up and opened it. The book glowed and Velma dropped it again.

Swirls of light circled all around her and she was sucked into the book. The next thing she knew, Velma was unconscious. Her body landed on an unknown bed in an unknown world. The girl inside the bedroom screamed her head off when she saw Velma appear out of nowhere. It was Charlotte La Bouff's bedroom.

Mr. La Bouff heard his daughter's screams and ran out of his study. He ran down the hall to his daughter. He was worried that something had happened to her. What if something did happen to her?! Panic overwhelmed him as he ran to her room. He felt like his heart was going to explode.

Charlotte's mind raced with panic as well. She had no idea where this girl came from, but what if she got into trouble with her father? She had to do something. Lottie had to help. She looked around her room, searching for a plan. Then her eyes fell onto her closet door. She didn't love the idea of hiding a body in her closet, but she had no choice. Charlotte quickly picked up Velma's body off her bed and dragged her into the closet. She could hear her father running. Once Velma was inside the closet, Charlotte closed the door and her father burst into the room.

"Sweetie, what is it?" He asked, completely out of breath. "Are you okay?"

"I'm okay father," Lottie said. "I thought I saw something outside the window."

Mr. La Bouff walked over to the window to check and saw nothing. He looked back at his daughter, concerned. "Are you sure you saw something?"

Charlotte shrugged. "It might have been nothing, just a shadow. Something I thought I saw Daddy, I'm okay. I promise."

"Okay." Mr. La Bouff said, kissing his daughter on the forehead.

"Thank you, Father," Lottie said.

Mr. La Bouff looked back at his daughter one more time and then left the room. He walked back to his study. Charlotte sighed heavily, out of relief. She walked over to her closet and grabbed Velma. She gently placed her on the bed and thought about how to get this girl out of the house safely. How could she accomplish such a mission? What was Lottie going to do? Then it came to her! What if she dressed up Velma as a rich friend of hers? Charlotte had many friends and most of them were rich. If she could dress this poor girl up as a rich girl then her father would never suspect anything.

Lottie ran to her closet again and fiddled through her clothes. Charlotte found a perfect dress for her and ran over to the girl. She didn't like the thought of dressing her, but she thought it was the only way to get out of her house. So Lottie carefully undressed her and put the new outfit on her. The new outfit was a long, v-neck red dress that was flowy. Charlotte smiled and thought, it looks perfect! Then she took off the girl's shoes and put on golden open heels.

Charlotte moved on to the next item of clothing, which was a pair of white fancy gloves. She smiled, very proud of herself for giving this poor girl a new makeover. Lottie wasn't done yet though. She still had some accessorizing and makeup to do. Charlotte ran over to her makeup center and opened her jewelry box. She found a pair of pearl earrings and placed them on Velma's ears.

"Almost done," Charlotte whispered.

She ran back to her makeup center and found golden cuff arm bracelets. Charlotte ran to Velma and placed them on her wrists. This whole outfit was coming together! Lottie found a pearl necklace to match the pearl earrings. Now, it was time for makeup and her hair. Charlotte went back to her makeup center and grabbed a brush. She cleaned her brush and went over to Velma. She styled her brown hair and made it wavy. Lottie then cleaned the brush again and placed it back in her makeup center. Charlotte looked at her selection of makeup and thought about what to do with the girl.

What shade would work? Lottie wondered. Then she thought of it. Blue! It was a light blue. She ran back over to Velma and gently placed the shade of blue onto her closed eyelids. Then she grabbed some pink lipstick and placed it onto Velma's lips. The girl remained unconscious. She must have been knocked out cold, Charlotte thought. She was beginning to worry. Lottie shrugged and grabbed mascara. She placed it on her eyelashes. Charlotte grabbed some blush and placed it on the girl's white cheeks.

Then, finally, she placed a fake beauty mark on her left cheek. Charlotte smiled widely. The girl looked perfect! Lottie grabbed one more thing: perfume. She sprayed it on the unknown girl and then her makeover was done. Velma Dinkley looked like a rich girl. The sudden spray woke Velma up. She slowly opened her eyes and looked at her surroundings. She had no idea where she was, but wherever she was it was nice.

The room was neatly decorated and had many rich tastes. Velma's heart started to beat faster. The last thing she remembered was that she was sucked into a book. Oh no! That's right, she got sucked into a book! How could that happen?! Her thoughts raced through her mind and she quickly sat up.

"Easy there," Lottie whispered. "You don't want to move too fast now hon."

Velma blinked and something felt wrong with her eyes. Was she wearing makeup? She wondered. Charlotte ran over to the girl and stood beside her bed. She had a huge smile on her face, which creeped Velma out. Velma shivered and looked at the girl.

"Where am I?" Miss Dinkley asked.

"You're in New Orleans," Lottie replied. "My name is Charlotte La Bouff, but most people call me: Lottie." She paused. "What's your name?"

"Velma Dinkley."

Charlotte smiled and said, "Nice to meet you." She held out her hand.

Velma shook her hand and then looked down. She noticed red. This wasn't the outfit she was wearing before. Panic ran through her veins again. Her heart beat faster. Charlotte looked at her and asked,

"What's wrong?"

"What happened to me?!" Velma asked and immediately stood up.

Charlotte raised her hands in defense. "Easy! I had to make you look like somebody."

"Somebody?!" Velma yelled.

"Shh!" Lottie whispered. "Inside voices please!"

Velma looked around the room and found her makeup center. She ran over to the mirror and looked at herself. She thought she looked horrible! The red dress, the blue makeup, the fake beauty mark, she hated all of it! Velma whirled around and looked at Charlotte.

"You dressed me up!?"

"I had to!" Charlotte cried out. "If I hadn't then I wouldn't be able to get you out of the house!"

Velma sighed heavily. "Alright," she said. "How do we do that?"

"The only way is to let people think that you're one of my rich friends," Lottie told her. "Then you can get out of the house and we can get you back to where you belong."

Velma nodded. "Okay, how do we get me out of the house?"

"A simple lesson," Charlotte said. "I teach you how to be a rich person."

"That's simple?!" Velma shouted.

Lottie rolled her eyes. "Please, you have to remain calm!"

"Okay, I'm sorry," Velma said. "I just don't know how I got here and I want to go home."

"I think I know someone who can help," Charlotte said. "But we have to work fast. Can you do that?"

Velma nodded. "Wait, why are you helping me?"

Lottie shrugged. "You seem like a nice person and I wanted to help you the moment you landed in my room."

"Thank you," Velma said. "What do I do?"

"We start with a few simple phrases: I'm rich, I'm beautiful, and I'm a shining star," Charlotte said and pulled Velma over to the mirror. "Repeat it and believe it."

Velma looked at herself in the mirror. She didn't believe in any of those things. This was all so strange to her, but she had to get out. She had to get out of this house and back to her world. Velma took a deep breath and repeated the phrases:

"I am rich, I am beautiful, and I am a shining star," Velma said. "I am rich, I am beautiful, and I am a shining star."

Charlotte watched Velma repeat those phrases until she felt like Velma was confident. Once she was done, she moved on to the next lesson. Lottie smiled at Velma and told her, "Okay, now we move on to the hard part."

"That wasn't hard?!" Velma shouted and threw her hands in the air.

"Shh!" Charlotte said. "Remember inside voices?!"

Velma stumbled in her heels. "Sorry," she meant it.

"Okay, next let's get to work on those heels," Charlotte told her.

Velma nodded and for the whole afternoon, Charlotte showed her how to walk in heels. She tripped and fell on her face a couple of times, but she was getting the hang of it. Velma still couldn't believe that Daphne liked to wear heels. By the end of the afternoon, she grasped the hang of it. They were so hard to wear! Velma sighed heavily and went back to the mirror.

"I am rich, I am beautiful, I am a shining star," Velma said and smiled.

"There we go!" Charlotte said and put her hands on her hips. "Now you're acting like a rich girl!"

"Can we leave now?" Velma asked her. "I just want to go home."

"You aren't having a little fun?" Charlotte asked and frowned.

"I'm sorry Lottie," Velma said and sighed heavily. "I'm just not used to this."

"How about this? After the lesson, we can go to my friends Tiana's and Naveen's and see if they can help?" Charlotte suggested.

Velma smiled and said, "Thank you."

They spent a couple more minutes practicing and Charlotte instructing Velma on how to be a proper lady. Velma couldn't help but think of her friend Daphne as she practiced with Charlotte. Then, they finally felt like it was time to go. Charlotte escorted Velma past the servants and when they reached the front door, Mr. La Bouff stopped them.

"Lottie! You didn't tell me you had company!" Mr. La Bouff said and smiled.

Charlotte whirled around and Velma's eyes widened. "Hello Daddy," she said and kissed him on the cheek. "This is my friend Louise from South Carolina." She lied quickly. Lottie didn't want to reveal Velma's true name yet. "I told you about her last night at dinner, remember?"

Velma whirled around too and gulped. She curtsied like Charlotte taught her and said, "Hello," Velma paused. "It's good to see you again."

Mr. La Bouff scratched his head. "Again?" He repeated. "Hm, I'm sorry dear, but I don't remember you."

"It's okay Daddy," Charlotte said and teased him. "I guess you're getting old." She giggled. "I told you that Louise was coming over today. She and I are going to see Tiana and Naveen."

Mr. La Bouff shrugged and said, "Well, I guess I am." He chuckled. "It's good to see you too Miss Louise from South Carolina."

Mr. La Bouff turned on his heel and went back to his study. Charlotte wiped her forehead and placed her hand on the doorknob. "Let's go." She whispered to Velma.

Velma nodded and walked outside the house. They made it!
