Chapter 1
Christian was holding the acceptance letter in his hands. The utter shock of finally winning something had him dumbstruck. His entire existence was nothing but one disappointment after another. His biological mother had died from a drug overdose when he was barely old enough to wipe his bottom. He still remember standing over her dead body, begging her to wake up and feed him. He did not even know how many days it was that she lay that way but for days no one came and finally when someone came they took her away and he was taken to the hospital. It was there that he met Grace and she held onto him for a long time and told him that everything would be ok. He hugged Grace but did not say anything and when people tried to take him from her he screamed until he passed out. Grace was at his side when he opened his eyes, and she promised him that she would take care of him always. That was what she did. He should have been grateful to Grace and Carrick who had adopted him even while they had two of their own children. They had treated him with so much care and did everything possible so that he knew he was a part of their family, yet he never truly felt like he had ever fit in. They loved him, this he knew but still, he never felt like he belonged with the Greys. While he carried the surname, he felt an immense amount of pressure to be everything they expected of him. Good grades, good manners, good sports achievements and in general never a hair out of place. The Grey's had never actually said the words, they had never actually told him they wanted him to be a picture of perfection, but he felt that it was his only way to repay them for their kindness of taking him in when they did.
"Christian, what is the matter?" Grace asked. She was dressed in her scrubs and ready for another double shift at the hospital where she worked as nurse. She took the paper Christian handed and her lips curved upwards in pure happiness.
"This is amazing news, is this not what you have been waiting for?" she asked with raised eyebrows.
"It is since Steele Publishing is a big deal currently." Christian replied.
"Congratulations son." She replied and kissed him then rushed out the door.
Christian stared at the door for a long time. Soon Grace did not need to work as hard has she did, soon she would not need to work double shifts and pay extreme amounts of money to educate her three children. Not just Grace but Carrick as well. He worked too hard as a police officer, putting his life in danger on a daily basis just so that they could have the bare minimum. If anything, Christian owed them more than one lifetime of payback. He could have ended up in a home, worst he could have ended up like his mother, a complete shitshow and druggie. Yet, the Grey's offered him a chance to turn things around and this acceptance letter from Steele Publishing was the key to changing everything.
All he had ever wanted to do was write. He had a million stories in his head. Words flying through his mind faster than the speed of light. Yes it would take time to get there but having an internship with one of the best publishing houses would help him prepare for it.
The following week was the graduation ceremony, and he would receive his internship papers from the infamous Ms Anastasia Steele. She was ruthless, and many people were terrified of her. Christian was standing at the drinks tent when her limo arrived. The first thing he saw was her red stiletto heel that hit the ground in a force that dust particles rose. His eyes followed the length of her legs to a knee length black dress. It fit her so snuggly that his throat dried up. It was her brown eyes though. When his grey on her brown eyes locked, he thought he saw her lips part as if she were taking a deep breath. He shook his head as she walked right past him and took her seat in the VIP section.
When Christian heard them call his name he stood up and walked to the stage. His family were all cheering him on and as he stride across the stage, he met face to face with Ms Steele. Her red lips parted again and when she handed him his internship papers he felt a charge of electricity flew through him when their skin touched. She must have felt it too because she pulled her hand away quickly and almost ran off the stage. He watched her as she walked away. Her bodyguard close by. Just before she got into her limo. She turned and looked at him again. This time her eyebrows raised as if she was questioning him, asking him why he was looking at her, why was he sending her an electric vibe, but the moment passed quickly, and she climbed in, and the limo disappeared.
"What are you looking at?" Elliot asked from behind him.
"My new Boss." Christian replied and then turned around and went to join his family in the celebrations.
"To Christian!" Carrick said as they all raised their glasses.
"To the beginning of all your dreams son." Grace added.
"Yes we cannot wait to read what is in their weird mind of yours." Mia joked.
"Yes, I am looking forward to it. At least we do not need to cut open your brain to figure you out brother." Elliot said laughing.
Christian looked around and felt a warmth that he knew he truly deserved. It was by some miracle that he got to have it and he was a lucky man to have so much love from a family that was not his own to begin with. He smiled at his family, and they all walked off towards the food tent where they would enjoy a meal together with the rest of the students. Something Christian was not looking forward to.
