Hey guys :)))

This chapter is being completed, edited and published at twelve in the morning and it has reached 5k words which is a new high record for me so I'm super proud even though I'm supposed to be sleeping lol.

This chapter has a bit more action and gives hints towards what our couple's mutant abilities actually are.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed it!

Chapter 2: Clueless

Jasmine woke up by someone, Huey she realized, gently but sternly shaking her. She blinked trying to chase away the drowsiness that covered her body like a heavy blanket but she couldn't manage to shake away the heaviness of her limbs as she was cradled in his arms.

She blinked once more and she could finally see his face although it was heavily blurred as if he was hidden behind an opaque door. It certainly didn't help that it was night but she could still make out his worry in his eyes.

"Huey?" Her voice was rough and the words were a pain to speak, it felt as if her throat was filled with needle sharp fragments of glass and they took pleasure in her pain, she coughed and her entire body was wracked with pain.

"Jazmine, we have to go." For the first time in her life Huey, who was always cool, calm and collected in the face of any adversity, sounded frantic and worried but why? Why was he so scared? She couldn't remember anything, it hurt too much to think, she wanted to go back to being unconscious.

"Go? Go where?" She asked even though her throat was begging her to shut up. Was she hit by a bus? That would explain why her entire body was screaming out in pain. She could barely flex a toe without a shockwave of a million tiny stabbing needles reverberating through her flesh; It hurts to think, to speak, and to see. She just wanted to lie there in his arms until either the pain leaves her or she dies whichever came first, she wasn't picky.

"We need to leave Woodcrest before they find us."

Even with her dulled mind that still threw for a loop, her mind filled up with questions that she was in too much pain to ask , why do they need to leave Woodcrest? Who was after them? Why did they need to leave in such a hurry? Were they going to Riley with them? Mr. Freeman and her parents too? Why were they in the middle of the woods? What was going on? Where was Jackson? Wasn't he around here-

Her eyes widened and her brain was flooded with the memories, the party, the stupid argument, Jackson, Huey punching Jackson, and…the glow. The ever changing iridescent light that danced around their intertwined fingers like the aurora borealis and then the complete darkness that followed right after, although that could possibly explain why she felt as if every bone in her body was broken, her memories only unleashed another tidal wave of questions.

How could that be possible? Light didn't just appear around people's hands unless…but that was impossible, she tried to abandon the thought as soon as it popped up in her head but it wouldn't leave. She couldn't be a mutant, she was a cheerleader, her parents are boring and come from boring families - there was no secret mutant lineage anywhere in her family tree if there was she was sure her parents would have told her - they tell her everything some might say they told her too much. She lives in Maryland for crying out loud - didn't all the cool mutants come from California or New York? Maryland wasn't cool enough to have any mutants even Baltimore was one of the lamer cities.

She couldn't be mutant, Huey could in fact he would excel at it she could see him at the head of mutant resistance holding a billowing flag like in those paintings about revolutions but that wasn't Jazmine. That will never be Jazmine. She wasn't revolutionary or mutant material; mutants didn't have the time to organize all their Japanese stationary every Sunday and they wouldn't cry at their seventeenth watching of 'The Fox and the Hound' they have much bigger fish to fry but no matter how much she wanted to run from the truth she knew she couldn't escape it.

"Huey, what are we?" she asked, voice quivering to her shame. She needed to hold herself together but she could barely think, tears began to prickle in her eyes and she just wanted to close her eyes and die.

"That doesn't matter right now whatever we did just sent a fucking beacon signalling where we are we need to leave now."

"I-I can't move, everything hurts. I don't think I can walk." she stammered cursing her body in her head, she's heard of mutants whose 'powers' hurt them more than anyone but why did it have to be her?

With ease Huey hoisted her up one arm under her knees and the other holding tightly around her torso, surprised at his sudden action she wrapped her arms around his neck, she thanked god it was dark so he wasn't able to see her face turn the color of a tomato.

"Hold on tight." that was his only warning as he started to run like a bat out of hell, Jazmine's grip around his neck tightened but that only slightly stopped the awful jerking motion that had her brain rocking up and down against her skull, it sent a surge of bile up her throat that she had to force down - she would rather die than throw up on Huey, instead she pressed her head on his shoulder and took in calming deep breaths of the cold night air. She repeated the simple action in her head fearing if she stopped she would just succumb to the pain or worse barf her dinner on Huey's back.

Breathe in.

Breath out.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

She raised her eyes to the sky hoping the scenic sight of stars in the sky would ease her anxiety like it did when she was younger but instead she saw - well she had no idea what she was seeing.

She was having a mental breakdown, yes that explains it all she needed to do was just close her eyes and calm down and it would all go away. She squeezed her eyelids together and counted on to ten.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

Eight.

Nine.

Ten, when she opened her eyes everything will be fine. She opened them, her heart sank and her grip around Huey's neck tightened, she was wrong so very wrong.

What had they done?

The trees were floating actually floating, ripped from the ground with their once proud roots being exposed to the air, the prized Oak trees of Woodcrest were floating tens of feet off the forest ground suspended in mid air but that wasn't all everything was floating absolutely still in the air like time was standing still, the rocks, leaves, flowers, and even the bugs were frozen in the air. She could imagine their tiny little minds screaming from fear in their tiny little skulls.

And for some reason unknown to her, maybe it was just morbid curiosity, her eyes continued to move up climbing high to the sky and this time she couldn't prevent the gasp from escaping her lips - while the earth was frozen in time the skies were raging in a continuous swirling storm surrounding a large hole that exposed the eerily still night sky. Blocked by an invisible barrier everytime the storm and the still sky met lightning sparked and thunder roared.

"Huey what did we do?" she asked, her voice shaking and without strength.

"It looks like we're mutants." he answered, surprisingly monotonous even as he sprinted through the woods leaving the evidence of what they did behind, he deftly dodged the trees that still remained rooted in the earth, his voice and breathing even. Huey was always freakishly athletic but she was just starting to notice that it was leaning more on the freakish side, was this activated when they held hands? Or was she just now opening her eyes to how her best friend since practically birth was always a mutant.

Is this why they always gravitated towards each other? They have been next door neighbors since they were able to walk, her parents planned a playdate with all the neighborhood toddlers and little two year old Jazmine immediately grabbed onto the frowning toddler. Her parents always made jokes about them being soulmates and she would always blush and pray to god that Huey wouldn't notice her crush on him but now…was that even real?

Was she just a little girl who just wanted the little boy hiding in the corner to play with her or was she a mutant that was instinctively drawn to another mutant just like how the member of an 'it' group knew a fellow member.

Not coincidence, just chemistry.

She shook her head, no she was just letting her mind run wild what she and Huey have is real and it always will be.

She felt Huey slow down and she turned her head to see what was going on and her eyes widened. The flames of the bonfires had gone out and everyone was laying flat on their backs almost completely still, thankfully she could see their chests rise and fall in a steady pattern, they were all alive just unconscious including Riley who stood out in his bright red hoodie.

"Oh my god," she gasped, turning her head to see Huey's stone-faced expression, "did-did we do this?"

"Possibly." He walked over to Riley's unconscious body bringing Jazmine with him, she thought he was going to put her down so he could gently wake his little brother but it became quickly apparent that she gave Huey too much credit.

Huey, not so gently, kicked Riley in his side and the majority of her was shocked at the surprise violence but just a small sliver of her was happy because it worked, Riley woke up with a start and sat up, obviously confused his head darted around to find his attacker until settling at the no doubt strange image of Huey looming over him with a fragile Jazmine cradled in his arms. His face blanked and Jazmine questioned if he had a brain injury, then Riley's face contorted into snarl.

"What the fuck was that for?!" Ah, it looks like he didn't have any head injuries, that was good.

"We need to leave now. Get up." Huey ordered.

"Leave the party?"

"Yes and the state."

"The state?!" Riley and Jazmine yelled at the same time.

"Sentinel Services are most likely already on the move. We need to be faster than them."

Sentinel Services? She thought those guys were like the FBI for big scary evil mutants, they shouldn't be coming after people like them but then she remembered the floating trees, the hole in the sky, and…the dozens of unconscious teenagers in the woods.

She guessed they were the big scary evil mutants now.

"Sentinel Services? Don't those niggas only chase mutants?" it seemed that Riley finally noticed what had happened all around them, "What the fuck is going on?"

"Jazmine and I are mutants, there are floating trees and a permanent storm back there, no more questions we need to leave now." Just as always Huey was clear and concise with no words wasted, the total opposite of Jazmine.

Riley looked like he wanted to ask more questions and honestly Jazmine had a lot of her own but Riley instead just got up stoically.

"Alright let's go."

It was always a scary thing when the Freeman brothers got along but that would definitely be an asset.

The three, well two, raced through the woods until they finally reached Huey's car, Jazmine had never been more happy to see Huey's piece of shit car - she almost kissed the dashboard when Huey gently placed her on the seat.

The two brothers settled into their own seats and Huey started the car or at least he attempted to. There were no lights and no sounds from the engine, not even the slightest hum. It was dead.

"Fuck." Huey gritted out and Jazmine was inclined to agree.

"Did y'all fuck up this too?" Riley quipped from the backseat, Huey swiveled around to glare at his brother and Riley met his gaze head on with a glare of his own.

Riley continued to goad his brother, "What? You want a fight?"

"I am not in the mood I might kill you right now. This is not the time for your whining."

"I can whine all I like, you-" he said nudging his brother's shoulder, "-are the one who fucked everything up, you are the reason we have to run to fucking Atlanta!"

"Riley I swear to God-"

While the two brothers bickered Jazmine was staring intensely at the car as if just staring at would have it revving and ready to go. She paused, eyes flicking back to the forest and what had happened in there, maybe she could do that.

It was a risky gamble, she didn't know what her mutant abilities really were maybe if she touched it it would puncture a hole in it and really render it completely useless but it didn't hurt to try…okay well in her case it actually might but it was still worth a shot, if Huey was right (which he usually was) then they had to be out of Woodcrest fast and they couldn't exactly just walk to Atlanta.

Tentatively she reached out her hand before pausing and deciding to just use one finger just in case, she reached out her pinky finger and to her surprise and delight the light appeared again, dancing around her fingers in that strange yet beautiful shimmering iridescent except this time for some reason the light stayed one color, her favorite - a sweet bubblegum pink that looked deceptively innocent.

She took a breath, it was now or never, she closed her eyes and desperately prayed for the car to work with an extra pretty please to appease her mystical powers; the very tip of her pinky finger touched the dashboard and to her joy she heard the sound of the engine.

Huey and Riley heard it too and swiftly turned around to look at her, the thoughts of murdering each other just a second ago disappeared.

Huey was the first to speak, "Jazmine, did you do this?"

She nodded vigorously, a shit eating grin on her face.

"How exactly?" This time it was Riley who spoke.

"I just," she paused what exactly did she do?, "I just thought of it and it just…happened."

Riley grinned, "That is so fucking cool."

"Yeah," Huey was a lot less enthusiastic instead he stared at her as if she was a thing under a microscope, "cool."

She coughed and turned her head to face the dark view in front of her, "Shouldn't we be running for our lives."

Huey blinked, "Yeah you're right." and they were off.

"Okay so what the fuck is the actual plan?" Riley asked, breaking up the awkward silence that had blanketed the car for the past three minutes.

Jazmine agreed, "Yeah you always have a plan so…what is it?"

"There is a mutant underground with one of their major chapters being in Atlanta, we're going to track them down and get their help."

"Atlanta?" she questioned, it was funny she's been to every country in Europe and a good chunk of South America and Asia but Atlanta seemed like a million miles away, she gripped her thighs to prevent her hands from shaking normally she would go to Huey for comfort but she was too scared that whatever they did would happen again so for the moment she decided that she could keep her hands to herself.

"How do you even know about the mutant underground?" Jazmine was really not used to Riley being the one to be asking the important questions.

"I know of them because I helped them contact and smuggle mutants." he informed them.

"Holy shit!"

"Nigga what?!"

The two exclaimed at the same time and Huey winced at their voices.

"You know that is illegal right? My parents are lawyers so I know that is super illegal."

"So you can smuggle mutants but you can't help a nigga with algebra? Nigga you are a bitch!"

"Can the both of you stop screaming in my goddamn ear." Huey hissed and the two slumped back into their seats pouting.

Huey sighed, "Look this is serious, we are going to be chased to the ends of the earth by people who want to kill, experiment, or just simply make an example of us. We are not on a road trip, this is life or death so for the love of God start taking this seriously. Got it?"

Neither of them spoke.

"Answer me!" The car started to shake with his anger. The roof of the car sunk in and a yelp escaped Jasmine's lips when the window beside her shattered.

"Got it!" The two trapped passengers yelled and in an instant the shaking stopped, the roof lifted, and even the once shattered glass looked brand new, stitched together piece by piece by some invisible power. His power.

She chewed on her lip trying to calm her racing heart, she now understood where the majority of their power came from. Huey could crush a car just by being slightly irritated and she could…ignite a car's engine.

"When we get home get one or two bags and fill them with necessities and when I mean necessities I mean clothes and cash. No bullshit, no perfumes, no lotions, no video games, and no fucking shoes. Clothes and cash, got it?"

"Got it." they said quickly not wanting to risk the chance of being crushed alive.

There was a pause before Jazmine raised her hand as if she was in class.

Huey sighed, "Yes Jazmine?"

"What about my parents and your grandad?"

At that Huey paused before rubbing his temple groaning as he did, "I don't know."

"W-well maybe they can help at least my dad could help, he doesn't really do that type of law but he still has friends-"

"Jazmine, they've arrested actual politicians for being mutants, your dad can't do anything no matter how much you want him to be able to." his tone wasn't meant to be harsh but it wouldn't have mattered anyway the words were harshly true and a familiar feeling of dread swelled up in her stomach. 'Your dad can't do anything', she knew a lot of things her father couldn't do - she practically had a list but she still wanted to believe that her daddy could save her like he could always did carrying away from

The final few minutes before they reached their destination was silent.

Huey parked his car right beside her house.

"Jazmine-"

"I know cash and clothes, I got it." she said quickly and tartly, Huey frowned but it wasn't from irritation or disappointment like it usually was, this emotion was one she never saw on his face before - guilt.

His hand reached out to her and she had to bite down on her lip to prevent a gasp from escaping her throat as electricity ricochet throughout her entire body as his fingers only just barely grazed the skin of her bare thighs.

The light was back, paler and more delicate probably due to the lack of full on skin to skin contact but it was there, pulsing and caresing her skin and her heart and it was…addicting. Her eyes followed his hands up his glowing veins to his face and his glowing and color shifting eyes, if Huey was feeling the simply overwhelming concoction of emotions that swirled up inside her he definitely did not show it.

"Jazmine," he spoke and she found herself being latched onto his every word, every syllable, every letter, "please be safe."

She answered back her voice barely above that of a whisper, "Yes."

His touch left her and she wanted to die, the darkness of the night became a muted gray, everything was cold and she felt as if she was being dragged down into the chilling depths of the ocean. She rubbed her arms to try and give herself more heat but no matter how she tried she couldn't prevent the cold from seeping into her bones.

She escaped the car in an awkward fumbling deciding that the further she was from him the better she would feel.

She was wrong, the higher she went up the stairs the more she felt herself being pulled down in the metaphorical depths. How more of this could she take? One touch sent her on cloud nine and the next she was sent tumbling down that mountain hitting every rock on her way down.

She managed to stumble into her room, her mind repeating the very small list that Huey had provided to her over and over again in her head. Just clothes and cash.

She pinpoint her her school bag which was more like a satchel, that couldn't be used all it could fit was a laptop instead she dug deep under her bed to tug out her famous box of crap, tugging it out she found what she was looking for - her sixth grade middle school bags that she abandoned on the first week because it was way too childish for eleven year old Jazmine.

Her mother insisted she keep them in case they would come in handy and of course Sarah DuBois was right like she always was.

Tugging the extremely girly pastel pink floral backpack she started to pack ignoring the irregular pangs of dread in her stomach.

She packed what Huey would have picked, sensible yet casual: not-too-short shorts, jeans, tank tops, thin but warm long sleeved shirts, sweaters, anything that could be worn in any weather - she even managed to to stuff a few pairs of sneakers without having the bag explode.

Tracking down money was a lot easier, she did have credit cards but she was sure the Sentinel Services could track her and the Freemans' but that was nowhere close to the amount of money she had, she's been getting an allowance since she could walk and every visit to her grandparents from either side she would have collected at least fifty dollars.

She kept it all in several ornate wooden boxes that were handmade by her dad's father because 'A princess needs her secrets', she kept it hidden in the back of her closet.

She hardly spent the physical cash, instead she used the credit card that her parents paid for, however she did enjoy counting and bundling the cash like a little bank - she remembered sitting criss cross applesauce on the ground straightening the dollar bills with her hair straightener and then bundling them together with the labeled printed paper in the same color coded stacking system as all American banks. She probably looked like the world's most hyper feminine drug dealer with her pastel pink chained reading glasses and half hearted ponytail.

If her counting was right (it was she quadruple checked twice) over the six years she's been collecting money from her family she has earned a grand total of over ten thousand dollars consisting entirely of twenty, fifty, and hundred dollar bills.

She smiled, in this life of death situation it was really nice to have rich family members who love her although she was definitely going to need another bag, her eyes trailed back over to her designer tote back that she ignored before - maybe it could be of some use.

At the end slung the satchel over her head before putting it on her back and almost fell flat on her ass.

Even after doing what Huey said she couldn't leave at least just not yet, her eyes darted around the room willing herself to memorize every little detail - the curtains, her bed, the fluffy pink rug, her vanity that hosted all her makeup and skincare products that she would have to leave behind likely forever, the plushies that could be found in every nook and cranny in her room most of them bought by herself but the others being gifts.

Her eyes stopped at the framed picture on the side of her bedside table, it was taken a couple years ago when she was barely fourteen - it was the summer before her freshman year, they were staying at her maternal grandparents house in Cape Cod; she had bought a whole new wardrobe just for this. Her dad had that same goofy grin on his face like he always did, her mother was resting her head on his shoulder, her blonde hair gently blowing in the wind and she was there standing in front of them holding the camera.

Jazmine could feel the sand under her toes, the wind in her hair, and the smell of the sea all around her but most of all she could feel her parents love flooding her entire being.

She couldn't just leave without saying goodbye.

She couldn't call them even as she craved to hear their voices one last time before she left; she knew break down into a sobbing mess and probably would have stayed in Woodcrest where she would have been arrested and experimented on by the government and who knows they could have already been tapping their phone calls. She just couldn't risk it.

Instead she tore out a piece of paper from a notebook and tried to write something but her hand wouldn't move, she had too many things to say but didn't have the time or the words.

What could she even say? Sorry mom and dad I'm abandoning you and running away because of Huey's hunch p.s I'm a mutant lol?

This was all so unfair.

Her being a mutant was unfair.

Her having to leave was unfair.

Life was unfair.

She could feel the strangely familiar humming of her powers. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath to calm down and felt the humming recede, when she opened them again she breathed out a sigh of relief to see that nothing was floating or on fire but relief only lasted a second because her parents were still on her mind.

She stared down at the blank paper again, breathed in deeply and started to write. She tried to keep it as concise as possible leaving out all her worries and fears of what was yet to come.

When she was finished, she reread it instinctively just like how her childhood english tutors taught her, her penmanship that she was so proud of did not come through on paper - the lettering were weak and sad just like how she felt and the words themselves didn't come close to expressing how she truly felt. Her eyes traced over the words once more.

Dear mom and dad I'm a mutant and Huey is one too I'm pretty sure you're going to see us on the news because of that happened in the woods and I'm sure they are going to paint us as evil but please know that I'm still your Jazmine and I would never hurt anyone.

Huey and I are going on the run because I don't want to imagine what they'll do to us. We've all heard the rumors of what happens in those detention centers and I don't want that for me.

I don't know when I'm ever going to see or talk to you guys again but I promise you that I will do whatever I can to reunite with you guys again.

You know how Huey is with literally everything so he's going to have at least fifteen different plans to keep us safe so please don't worry, please don't cry, don't lose any sleep.

I'm safe, I love you, and I will see you again.

Your princess forever and always, Jazmine.

She had to wipe away the few tears that had managed to escape so it wouldn't ruin her likely last words to her parents. She quickly placed it on her parents bed where they could easily find it and because she didn't want to change her mind.

Walking back into her room for more reminiscing her attention was once again diverted to somewhere else. Her ears pricked up at the sound of cars, it was past midnight and Woodcrest barely had any people up at that time, especially multiple people; she thought it could be the teens in the forest who finally woke up and were driving back home but her instinct told her that wasn't the case after all if Huey's car wouldn't start then why would anyone else's car would.

Peeking through the window she saw several bulky black cars that she only saw in movies being driven around by the CIA or FBI and parked right at the Freeman's blocking the path of both Huey and Mr. Freeman's car.

Her hope that they were just here to question them was dashed when the car doors opened and outpoured a dozen well armed men with gas masks and bulletproof vests, they seemed to be lead by one man who wore the same gear as the rest of them, he gave a signal and a half started to move in on the Freeman's property while the other were headed towards where she was now stuck.

They were going to take them if they were lucky and today she was hardly ever lucky.

She had to tell them - warn them but how? She could call Huey but he rarely had his phone on him, there were two other Freemans but she knew she would be a bumbling mess over the phone trying to warn them in their imminent danger. She had to tell them face to face but that was impossible- their house was currently surrounded and even if she was able to warn them what about her?

Her entire body was frozen in fear but her powers lashed out around her. The humming was now a thunderous drumming, she doubted any breathing exercises could prevent this and honestly she didn't want it to stop.

If whatever she had could restart a car and puncture a hole in the sky it could save her. It could take her to Huey.

She blinked and in that split second she was in her room then she found herself tumbling down to her feet in the very familiar Freeman living room.

"Jazmine?" she looked up to see Huey looking down at her surprised in fact everyone looked surprised including her.

Although she was still disoriented, the image of the men with guns snapped her out of her stupor.

"They're here!" she yelled trying not to pass out from the vertigo, "Sentinel Services are here!"

Even as the room spun Jazmine was of clear enough mind to see Huey's eyes harden into stone. Panic still flooded her entire being like a police's siren but she didn't know if she was worried about what those men were going to do to them or what Huey was going to do to them.

Chapter two completed.

I just noticed during editing that I have written so many questions in this chapter which makes sense because of course she would have a lot of questions, I would if I was in her position. That's probably why I named the chapter the way I did.

Also we see hints of the possible darkness behind Huey and the strange codependent relationship that has blossomed or more likely deepened due to their newfound powers.

There will be a lot more action during the next chapter because of obvious reasons.

Huey

Anyway I hope you enjoyed it :)
